Ernest Dawkins, a well-known American saxophonist and composer, will be our guest on The World Show on Sunday.
Ernest has consistently worked to make sure his music captures the vibrant and changing cultural memory of the African American aesthetic. He has also produced several projects that demonstrate his strong ties to South Africa. "Memory in the Centre, an Afro Opera: Homage to Nelson Mandela" was performed and recorded by him in 2014. More recently, he achieved the collaborative "Englewood to Soweto Project," which resulted in the recording of "We Want Our Land Back."

As the day of Lucky's 60th birthday and the 35th anniversary of his seminal record "Prisoner" draw near, his son TK and two of his long-time bandmates, keyboardist Ras Thuthukani Cele and guitarist Skipper Shabalala, will be joining us.
The release of the album "Prisoner" by Lucky Dube marks a critical turning point in his career. When it was released in 1989, it was a turning point in South African history that coincided with the release of the Robben Island convicts and the Rivonia trialists, which gave its themes of justice and freedom more substance. Following that, Thandeka Dladla, a gifted singer and composer, will join us.
At the age of twelve, Thandeka began listening to classical music. She later studied jazz at the University of Cape Town and gained notoriety as the lead vocalist of "The Unity Band." She was on their 2023 follow-up, "Breaking Bread," as well as their debut single, "Fabric."

Stewart Sukuma, the renowned multi-instrumentalist, composer, and singer from Mozambique, will be joining us on The World Show.

Jowee, a musician who plays a variety of wind and brass instruments, was born in Canada to Haitian immigrants.

In 1791, a group of enslaved Haitians met in the woods of Bois Caïman, on the country's north coast, and conducted a secret collective ceremony that inspired a mass uprising and laid the groundwork for the Haitian Revolution. In addition to an EP titled "The Child is Born 2" and a single named "See The World" honouring the late Ray Phiri and Mnca Mtshali, his highly praised 2016 debut album "The Child is Born" was released two years later.
He released a 2021 tribute to Joe Sample titled "Way Back Home," and at the end of the previous year, he released his most recent, "The Child is Born 3."

For over 35 years Vho-Mphatheleni has been working with the Venda elders, particularly women, for the transfer of indigenous knowledge to the younger generation. She calls elders her ‘libraries of knowledge’.

Alec Khaoli Considered one of the greatest bass players to ever come out of Africa, Om Alec made his mark in the ’60 with the legendary group ‘The Beaters’, which later, after touring Rhodesia, changed its name to ‘Harari’ - which is still considered one of SA’s most iconic bands ever! In the ’80’s, Alec went on to form his own band called Umoja and as the first black South African to have a privately-owned studio, established himself as a multi-platinum selling solo artist, during the same period. Kwani Experience, an innovative collective, also known as ‘The Most Famous Unknown Band’! Formed in Joburg in 2003, as a jam session and ’jazz experiment’. the group won the 2004 Standard Bank Totally Jazzed Contest, which led to the release of their debut album ‘The Birth Of The Mudaland Funk in 2005 and then ‘Live After Birth’ in 2007. Although bursting onto the scene as an octet, with changes in personnel the band became a septet then finally a sextet, until their sabbatical in 2012.

Bongeziwe Mabandla, who has been described as a “modern miracle” by Radio France Internationale (RFI) and who was recently profiled in prestigious UK music magazine, Songlines. Over the past eight years, this Joburg-based artist has steadily built his career and with a recent string of performances across Europe and Africa he has expanded his global audience, affirming his place as the ‘enigmatic spirit of African Soul’. Bongeziwe will be joining us to celebrate the upcoming release of his brand new album - first heard on The World Show titled ‘Iimini,’ the album was heralded last year with two singles “Zange” and “Jikeleza” and is due for release through London-based Platoon label on 28 March 2020.

Coming from Guinea Bissau, this Paris-based artist draws on his roots by blending a mix of musical genres, including fado, samba and salsa percussions, into the traditional Gumbé style - a rhythm originally played with big drums but also a dance, with contagious energy.

We celebrate #Jazzuary with our special guest, jazz pianist Hervé Celcal. Coming from Martinique in the French West Indies, Hervé trained on classical piano from the age of 7, and after introducing traditional West Indian pieces in to his classical repertoire, he was introduced to jazz and improvisation. After settling in Paris in the ’90’s, he worked extensively as an arranger, producer and performer, working internationally with the likes of Boy G Mendes, Ballou Canta, Sally Nyolo, Cabo Verde Show, Dédé St Prix and others… In 2014 he released his first solo album, which began a series of releases all exploring his unique blend of the traditional bèlè style with contemporary jazz. His latest album, ‘Colombo’ is an invocation to the Amerindian ancestors, a tribute to the "kouli", the New Orleans groove, classic flights, and jazz ... in short, Creole music!

With fresh sounds from around the world, the feature is an Afrobeat explosion - inspired by our special guest Seun Olota. Simply known as Olota, this Nigerian Afro-fusion artist has ‘built his music niche within the context of dance music, hymnal, choral and therapeutic music with original compositions for strings, percussion, brass, and wood wind instruments’. Olota encapsulates the African experience - he’s an art devotee, an advocate for persons living with special needs, and as a musician he’s performed at key festivals and events across the continent! As a 2019 Laureate of the Institute Francais ‘Visa For Creation Residency Program’ , Olota is currently a fellow resident at the Cite International Des Arts, with me in Paris.

Known for being the first South African DJ/MC to have mixed in London clubs during weekly residencies and on RadioClit; Mo Laudi then moved to Paris in 2009, and he has since been spreading his Afro-groove and deep house in Parisian clubs - bringing together Detroit techno, Chicago house with Cape Town rhythms, his incendiary kwaito and indomitable afro-beats, in sets with delightfully hypnotic virtues. He is also recognised for inventing a new musical trend, Nu World Techno, and as a producer, he launched his own label, Globalisto, to defend Afro-electro in the world. Mo Laudi will treat us to a guest mix as well as a selection of songs that reflect his #Afropolitan journey through music!

Our special guest is the Moroccan-born musician, Aziz Sahmaoui - an acclaimed singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and heroic exponent of his region’s Gnawa music.

For more than 20 years Aziz has worked to bring the sound of his native Morocco to life, far beyond the often superficial boundaries imposed by the concept of Word Music.

His talent as a musician and his taste for human adventure led him to co-found the ‘Barbès National Orchestra’ in the 1990s - a collective that’s known for carrying an entire part of Mediterranean history, it’s considered ‘one of the best bands of its time’!

Then in 2010, Aziz Sahmaoui founded the University of Gnawa - a concept group of talented musicians, hailing not only from from the Maghreb but also from Senegal, France and those ‘without fixed origin’. Their sound is a rich whirlwind of generosity that inevitably brings the rhythmic genius of Africa, from across and beyond the Sahara, to the world!

Ghanain guitarist Kyekyeku (Tche-Tche-Kou), who encapsulates a new generation of Ghanaian musicians who “make the distant past meet contemporary idioms” of West Africa’s musical heritage. His music draws from the forest folk Palmwine blues and the cross rhythms of Ghana that gave birth to some of the Africa’s intrinsic styles, like Highlife and Afrobeat. Senegalese guitar virtuoso and composer, Herve Samb - a prolific artist who has recorded on more than hundred albums and performed in almost every part of the world, working with the likes of Pat Metheny, Cheick Tidiane Seick, Toure Kunda, Paco Sery, Lionel Loueke, Jimmy Cliff, Pharoah Sanders, Meshell Ndegeocello, Oumou Sangare, Amadou & Mariam to name a few!

As a solo artist, Herve has also released a number of exceptional albums!

Known as the elder statesman of Malian music, Cheick’s career began in Bamako in the early ’70’s with legendary bands such as Les Ambassadeurs and the Super Rail Band - groups which launched the careers of artists like Salif Keita and More Kante.

With his new release ‘Timbuktu’, Cheick Tidiane Seck tributes the music of his friend and colleague Randy Weston, with a “Pan-African vision into the future over a sea of soulful piano and complex percussion”. Cheikh envisaged the session as a kind of musical banquet, inviting guests including Manu Dibango and Abd Al Malik to the table to pay tribute to Randy Weston’s compositions, blending disparate musical traditions and experiences into a collective eulogy.

The internationally acclaimed photographer, Yuri Lenquette. Having started his career as a journalist, Yuri began to devote himself entirely to photography in 1986. He has since collaborated with some of the most renowned artists of the last twenty-five years.

Jonathon Jurion,vibrant pianist from Guadeloupe, Jonathon Jurion. With his first solo release, Jurion explores the legacy of American saxophonist Marion Brown, a cult figure whose time in Paris left an indelible mark on the French Jazz scene. The session blends traditional Ka drums from Guadeloupe and the exceptional double bass of Michel Alibo with Jonathan’s piano to bring a percussive Caribbean reading of Brown’s diverse repertoire. Having seen him perform recently with Jowee Omicil, it’s no wonder that Jonathan is fast making waves on the French Jazz scene!

Jérémy Labelle, who is best known simply as ‘Labelle’. Born in France to a Réunionese father and a French mother, Labelle moved to Reunion island in 2011 to further develop a sound he dubs “Maloya electronica” - an amalgamation of synthetic and acoustic sounds, blending ancient tradition with modern technology. His latest album, Orchestre Univers, is an opus - was performed by the Orchestre Regional of Réunion Island, conducted by Laurent Goossaert.

Ozane - a talented, young Reggae Dancehall, modern Afrobeat singer and music producer from Togo. Ozane brings a new concept to the world of music, which he calls ‘Afro Dancehall’ - a mix of African traditional percussion with ragga roots.

In October of the same year he recorded at Salif Keïta’s studio in Mali, the album Chamber Music with Ballaké Sissoko, which was later followed by the equally powerful ’Musique de Nuit’

A composer, musician, sound artist and curator traversing the spheres of improvisation, technology and contemporary art. He has released six records of original music, with his electro-acoustic jazz trio, Ergo, and melodronoise duo Cherubim. His installations and collaborations have been presented internationally at some of the worlds most reputable galleries and institutions. Brett is also the Cultural Program Curator at Lévy Gorvy Gallery in New York City, where he programs aesthetic dialogues between the performing and visual arts.

An award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter, radio producer, music composer and teacher. After studying and living in the US, May is currently back in Lebanon where she presents two music programs on 96.2 FM Radio Liban « Poivre Noir, Piment Rouge » (world music) as well as « Champ Sonore » (electronic, contemporary music, and sound-scapes).

Special guest is the Tunisian artist, Wael Jegham aka ‘Ghoula’ - an award-winning multi-instrumentalist musician and composer of Tunisian and international film music.

He’s a digger, passionate about old North African vinyls, and in 2016, he released his first album ‘Hlib El Ghoula’, which means "milk of the ogress", a Tunisian metaphor for something to be found.
