Welcome to The Why We Tri Podcast!
Finding self motivation when the world beneath you is crumbling seems impossible. Triathlon & Endurance Sports demand you to be present at all times. Losing focus for only a moment while on the swim, the bike or the run can have dangerous consequences.
After the sudden loss of mom in 2018 my WHY in triathlon, as well as in my personal life was deflated. My 3 daughters needed their Mom back and I needed my WHY back. Small attempts back into the pool for a swim, or back on the bike to cycle, or out on that track to run, I found myself surrounded by a WORLD of triathletes in The Miami Tri Club and later at Ironman Races. A world of triathletes who openly shared their incredible stories with me. These stories inspired me to get back up, keep going and SHARE: WHY WE TRI!!
During the pandemic of 2020 another life challenge presented itself: Divorce. While the world around me and our three daughters seemed to crumble, I refused to believe I was the only one who needed to redefine or rather, reclaim my Why in Tri-athlon once again.
Kick back, grab you favorite beverage, tune in and enjoy the stories of ordinary people, who set out and go far beyond ordinary distances on The Why We Tri Podcast!

WWT Episode 66 w/ Mack Cyclist: Meredith Camel
Today’s episode is a BONUS Episode of our Mack Cycle Ambassador Mini-Series!
In this BONUS Mack Cyclist episode we head to the University of Miami with Executive Director of Communications and Mack Cyclist Ambassador Meredith Camel. When Meredith is not overseeing the marketing communication teams over at the U, she whips up a storm of healthy vegetables for her and her wife, Merrill Camel, paired with her favorite off-the-bike beverage: Vino!
Meredith was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome while attending college in Miami, FL, at the University of Miami. Hundreds of miles away from her family in Pennsylvania, this life-altering disease forced Meredith to slow down and take on a different perspective on life. Today Meredith is continued to be challenged by chronic fatigue syndrome, especially with the introduction of Covid during the pandemic. Meredith seeks new ways and routes to live an active, long, and healthy life. It was not until fairly recently that Meredith found cycling a healthy way to work through symptoms and achieve distances and physical accomplishments she only dreamed of while living with chronic fatigue syndrome for decades.
Meredith's positive energy she found while disconnecting from the ‘geometrical world we all stare at day in and day out’ transcends here in our conversation. Grab your favorite hydrating beverage and enjoy my conversation with Meredith Camel!

Welcome to the 5th episode in a 6-Part Mack Cycle Ambassador Mini-Series.
In today's episode, we keep it local and take off on a venture into the world of gravel with Dora Suarez, aka Dora the Gravel Explorer.
Dora is a Nuun, Honey Stinger, and Mack Cycle Ambassador who first started her endurance endeavors in Spartin Events. Dora shares how these events helped cultivate her desire to find a healthy like-minded community. Dora's ventures lead her to road cycling and eventually gravel cycling. Dora is now a local event coordinator and supporter for Mack Cycle Everything Gravel Facebook Events. Dora is also the Founder of Everglades Gravel Collective along with Mack Cyclist Mari Lovo (our next guest) and Melissa Westmoreland. The Gravel Collective is a 501(c)3 gravel community centering FTWNB, BIPOC, and para-athletes.
Dora reminds us that we are responsible for finding our fun and that 'playing bike' is just as fun as it was when we were all kids.
All we need to do is do it more often!

Mike Estevez: Event Announcer, 12 Time Ironman Finisher, USA Triathlon Level1 Coach, IronmanU Triathlon Coach, US Masters Level 2 Swim Coach, USA Cycling Level 3 Coach, ACSM Personal Trainer, Father and devoted Husband. Today’s episode starts with a little back story of how Why We Tri Podcast came into existence. In life we meet people who help us get back up and keep moving. For me that was teammate and good friend Gabriel Yanni. After the loss of my mom back in 2018 Gabe would encourage me to go on simple rides daily to just keep moving. Before I knew it we started: Coffee Rides with Gabe and Carrie on The Miami Tri Club FaceBook Page. We realized that it was the Underdogs of our team who inspired us to get up and keep moving the most. Soon after our rides Gabe decided to volunteer more with The Miami Tri Club and during quarantine he became a USAT Level II Triathlon Coach. Gabriel Yanni introduced me to many people who have become guests on this show. Including this next guest: Mike Estevez. Mike opens up and shares how the loss of his brother due to cancer gave way to him making a life pivot in his career and health. Grab your favorite beverage and hear how this energized individual helps his clients to tune into what is going on in their lives and how that shapes their work out and training. EP27: Living Out Her 'Father's List' & Aligning with Her Own Why in Life Laura Carney
Have you ever lost someone you wish you could have one more conversation with? To ask them their thoughts, their dreams, and what is on their Bucket List?
My next guest Zooms in from Montclair, NJ: Laura Carney. She is an author, magazine journalist, copy editor, activist and plant-based athlete, and a daughter who endured the tragic loss of her father at the age of 25. Her father was tragically taken when a distracted 17year old driver hit her father's car. After his sudden passing, Laura and her brother find a Bucket List her Dad wrote in 1978, the year Laura was born. Laura shares her quest to check items off of her 'Father's List' just before she was adding a new role to her life resume: Wife. Tune in to listen how her quest takes her on a journey towards running races, open water swimming, long distance cycling events and soon, an Ironman. Laura has since completed many items on her 'Father's List' and documents her adventures on her blog: My Father's List.
Laura is currently turning her quest into a book. In my Magic 8 Ball I see a movie/documentary in Laura's future.
As a special nod to my mom and Laura's dad, both second or third generation Irish, I wanted to get this up on St. Patrick's Day. Our parents never met here on earth, but we are both certain they are watching over us as we converse and carry on their legacies.

We are witnessing this here and now, not only with Covid Vaccines, but in Triathlon, as well.
Bill opens up and shares his personal introduction to the World of Triathlon. He reveals how endurance sports, NASCAR, the Challenge-Family Corporation , PTO (Professional Triathlon Organization ) and the active support from his beautiful family has all played an important roll in changing Triathlon as we know it. Triathlon has not been the greatest spectators sport. Nor has it been the most supportive sport in regards to the pros. Finally, here in the US it has lacked a festival energy that Bill guarantees for every level of age group athlete.

My next guest, an author, magazine journalist, copy editor, activist and plant-based athlete, endured the tragic loss of her father when she was 25 years old. A Why We Tri Production
EP25: Evolving Triathlon: Conversational Pace with Bill Christy, CEO of Challenge North America
It's a brisk March Monday morning here in Miami, FL. Bill Christy, CEO of Challenge North America, a triathlete at heart, graciously Zoomed in from his Daytona International Speedway Office with his Favorite Morning Beverage in hand, to share his Why in Tri-athlon. We are just 4 days out from Challenge-Family's inaugural event: Challenge Miami Triathlon. This historical triathlon festival is set to take place in Miami's very own Homestead-Miami Speedway. Only 35 minutes from Miami International Airport, making it a top Triathlon Triathlon Destination for years to come.
Live Streaming of Challenge Daytona results, as well as televised production results, proved the idea that was once a dream, was in fact more than just a dream. The numbers from Challenge Daytona were so convincing, NBC recently informed Bill and the entire Challenge Family, they are in for a few years to come. We are witnessing history in the making of how dreams are born, dreams are created, dreams are invested in, cultivated and how dreams are driven into existence. NASCAR, a past time that is just about as American as Apple Pie, has happily opened it's doors to Challenge-Family, and the PTO (Professional Triathlon Organization). This holds great hope for pro-triathletes that have, for years been capitalized on for their accomplishments. This transformation in triathlon will unite a strong bond between pro-triathletes and their fans, as NASCAR has done for years between Race Car Driver and their dedicated fan following.
I am excited to say, this is all just a dap of "tobassco" hot sauce in what Bill Christy and the Challenge-Family have planned for here in North America.

If you know Silvia, you know catching up to her is not an easy task.
This busy Mom of 2 athletic teenagers, Business Professional, and Wife to Triathlete Lucas Girotti, found a deep inner connection in every mile towards Triathlon Finish Lines and Virtual Challenges during Covid-19 Quarantine.
Recently, Silvia participated in The Miami Tri Club's Swim-UR-Challenge. She created this Swim Challenge with the help of her creative Female Tri Club Members: Karla Rooks, Martha Garcia and Eva Walther and our Coach, Andy Clark. The purpose of the Challenge was to motivate fellow Teammates to get back in the water and break personal records for the month of August. Silvia motivated us all to donate items to those in need to our local community, here in Miami, FL by collecting personal hygiene products throughout the month.

This @momIdlike2looklike (her tag on IG) is more than just the perfect shade of lipstick on a century ride.
WAY more!
Tune in with your favorite beverage and find out HER Why in Tri-athlon: as a Mom, a Wife, a Cardiology Nurse Practitioner, a friend and a Black Woman who wants more in Triathlon for our African American Communities here in South Florida.
Special thanks to Kisha, and her husband Kevin, for taking time out of their very busy family and work schedules so Kisha could share with our listeners the WHY in her TRI.
I hope this resonates with other African American Moms out there, and all Moms, who have had a desire to go after a personal goal for themselves in swim, bike and run but maybe needed to hear they are not alone and they are totally worth going after it!

Episode 04:
Has anyone ever influenced you to get up and get after that goal you keep putting off? Are you influencing others to go after their goals? Tonight's Episode Chef Dimitiris Harvalis of Fit By Elia and Elia's @Pinecrest reveals his Grandmother's Authentic Greek Cooking inspired him to make a change after 20 years in the rigorous Night Club hospitality industry towards creating healthy gourmet cuisine in his restaurant(s) and catering companies. Inspiration struck Chef Dimitris again during his desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle and running in local Miami Marathon events. A good friend of his inspired him to go after not just one sport but 3 sports: Swim, Bike, Run in Triathlon!
Like the pairing of a good wine and a delicious dish; Chef Dimitris shares how the positive support from his wife, Patricia, their 3 active daughters, along side teammates and triathlon training direction from Coach Andy Clark of The Miami Tri Club and Alien Endurance Race Team, he has found healthy adventures of a lifetime.
SPECIAL THANKS: Chef Dimitris - during the first 3 months of Covid Quarantine here in Miami, Florida, he stepped up to the plate in a major way by contributing preparation of his healthy and nutritious meals at a discounted rate for the #miles4mealschallenge I created back in April. Thanks to Chef Dimitris we were able to deliver over 1,400 meals to our local Healthcare and Frontline Heroes. It was a complete honor to work along side Chef Dimitris and our many other teammates during what has been a historically unprecedented time. Watching so many come together for others, while maintaining social distance AND surpassing fitness goals, truly revived my sense of purpose while on this precious journey called life!

Tonight's Podcast is with my fellow teammate, good friend and Badass Female Triathlete Competitor: Stephanie Reinhold!
She's a Multiple 70.3 World Ironman Championship Qualifier, a Multiple Kona Ironman World Champion Qualifier (2021 Kona Qualifier), 20x 70.3 Ironman Finisher, and a 20x Ironman Finisher...just to name a few of her MANY Triathlon accomplishments! Some may ask where Stephanie finds the time to train while she is a full time Biomedical Engineer?! Listen in to see how Stephanie tapped into an inner calling by only beginning this venture into the Triathlon World less than 10 years ago!! I had to pause many times through out this interview to understand how she went from not knowing how to swim or how to ride on a road bike to qualifying time and time again in the top of her age group, as well as, overall female triathlete in multiple local and international races. All with a smile on her face!
Special thanks to Stephanie for taking the time to sit down, open up and share her personal story with us to help motivate and inspire others out here searching for healthier lifestyles. Also, thank you to her husband and Coach - Andy Clark for introducing me to Stephanie back in 2016. Since then I have been doing my best to keep smiling through all the training, just as Stephanie shows us. Last but not least, thank you to Stephanie's parents: Susan & Mark (and the pups), your continued support over the years for Stephanie, Andy, as well as for our entire Triathlon Team has been admirable as a parent of 3 daughters myself.
Thank you all for your continued support as I venture into the Podcast World!! If someone you know is looking for a healthier lifestyle change SHARE THIS PODCAST! It might help to ignite that fire they need to get started and Tri - ANYTHING! ~Caroline

EP:02 Second Chances with Joaquin Duro In Tonight’s episode I am joined by my triathlon teammate, husband to Farrar Duro DOM, FABORM, father of four amazing kids, Vice President of Digital Telemundo Desportes, Kidney Transplant Warrior & Ironman Finisher; Joaquin Duro.
As Miami turns up the heat during this Quarantine Time, we both bring our favorite and most essential beverage to this Zoom podcast: WATER! As you will hear in Joaquin’s stories, staying hydrated is key!
Joaquin’s introduction to the world of triathlon was unexpected and came shortly after a kidney transplant ignited him with motivation full of second chances. Joaquin’s story is not a common one but one that resonates with many of us, looking for those second chances life has to offer. Many times Joaquin was told no, not happening, not today and yet he continued to persevere towards an inner drive to show up and carry his feet over those finish lines. He even took a pause from triathlon after the loss of his father and talked about how that was an important part of his journey into coming back, when the time was right and he was ready. Joaquin opens up with how the support of his wife and children gives him the strength to keep going, as well as helps him to pick those destination Ironman races as family vacations. Making each Ironman Race an adventure for the entire family to enjoy.
Special thanks to Joaquin and his wife, Farrar, for spending some Zoom time with me and shedding some light on Why We Tri!
Thanks for listening! Did you this Episode? Give it 5 Stars & Hit Subscribe! ~Caroline

A WhyWeTriPodcast.com Production: On this episode, I sit down with 18x Ironman Finisher and Head Coach of The Miami Tri Club and Alien Endurance Tri Team, Andy Clark.
We both kick back with one of our favorite beverages (Veza Sur ) and talk about his story and how he got involved in the triathlon world. Not every coach fits every athlete and vise versa, which is why we discuss the importance of finding the right coach. Coach Andy gives us his top favorite destination Races, as well as, some pretty funny unexpected experiences that have happened along the way!
We also talk about the #miles4mealschallenge I created with Coach Andy, his Miami Tri Club and our Team Chef Dimitirs Harvalis ( Fit By Elia and Elias @Pinecrest ) to help motivate our team of triathletes stay active (virtually) and help feed our #HealthcareHeroes in the face of this pandemic. Chef Dimitris came through in a major way, offering to feed our #FrontlineHeroes for only $5 per meal. Coach Andy set a team goal of cycling 10,000 miles in just 10 days, while we fundraise to feed 2,000 of local Healthcare Heroes healthy and nutritious meals.
