Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays if you prefer, to everyone out there from all of us.

My wife and I just got back from a trip to New Orleans. We did all the Touristy things- We took the double-decker bus tour and had a memorable seafood lunch at Dragos in the Hilton. Not only was the lunch great but included some of the BEST gumbo we've ever had.

Along with that was the worst excuse for a Po Bo I have eaten at the French market. Gak! We watched a TV show filming on Bourbon Street while having a libation, from the back of a pedicab. Exceptional driver and guide. We had some alligator on a stick. I even managed to decorate my dark slacks with the powered sugar from a plate full of Benigets.

Well good for us. What's the point? Well despite it being in the low 50’s temperature-wise and too cold for gators, and the water lower than normal, we still had a series of great adventures thanks to some great people.

When it is said and done, it is all about the people. Time for a look back at some of the lessons from last year and some thoughts on getting into 2024

(And by the way: That lake I was trying to pronounce is: Cataouatche. The Swamp Tour is Ragin' Cajun and located in Luling, LA.)

Each month I review all kinds of information. I came acorss some notes I'd made perviously about some items worth mentioning. I'm going to be sharing information and a few links to things thatI think are useful.

Medical information is pricesless and I'm including a link to a site I like quite a bit. It is run by an actual Doctor and Nurse and has all kind of useful information to share. The Stie is Doom and Bloom and I think it is worth a look. Not only does it offer medical information, but articles likeWhat To Barter Off The Grid? I also found an interesting read on People to Avoid in a Collapsed World at Urban Survival. That includes s certain crazy Uncles at Holiday dinners.

I'll be sharing news on our newly redesigned website and improved class booking for the coming year, and somequick stocking stuffer suggestons for gift giving. Be safe and look out for each other this busy Holiday Season.

The topic of Radiation and how to deal with it safely is a very deep dive. I shared links last week and I'm finalizing the topic here by stepping back and urging you to follow up and get first-hand training and product information. It is too complicated and important to hear secondhand. I'm including some new information on Rsperatiors or Gas Mask to designed to be used in an emergency situation.

Now is an excellent time of year to take advantage of Black Friday sales to fill in any holes in your supply cupboard. It also occurred to me that some of my listeners may not be familiar with Thanksgiving, as it is an American Holiday.

We have news on Classes, Gift certificates, and a Fruitcake that got passed back and forth for over 12 years. Is it still good? Was it EVER good is the question?

A very Happy Holiday season to everyone in our family.

To be able to deal with a problem, especially a scary one, I have found you have to look it in the eye, say its name, and tell it to **** off. Then you can deal with it. The thought of a bomb, or a "radiation event" is like that. OK. We've named our fear.

Let's begin to identify what steps we can take. I'm sharing resources to dig into. The first two have a wealth of information on useful steps to take and reliable product information. I'm including information about ways to measure radiation and the medication you may encounter if such a scenario were to take place.

It is a big topic, so I will also be going back next week. I also want to touch on EMP and RDIF issues. (For some reason the two seem to be linked.)

I also have class information and news on gift certificates. Thanks to my wife, I've included the address along with my invitation to come visit the range.

You've got homework family.

This week I'm looking at the more advanced aspects of prepping in the medical area. Because it is a serious area of study, the standard disclaimer applies: I'm not a healthcare professional and this is not medical advice. Speak to your healthcare practitioner before making any changes as they can have very serious implications.
I'll be sharing some resources for emergency medications, techniques for emergency treatments, and how to create survival caches. This is intended to be a basic introduction to the topic and will require additional research and effort to use properly on your part to be useful. I'll also have information on classes, and Gift Certificates for the upcoming holiday season.

**A new listener from Southeastern Ohio reached out and had some good suggestions to share. His name is Todd and he reminded me that building a plan is the key part of the Bug Out Bag and it can be pretty overwhelming at the start. He had some good ideas to share. Let's take a look at some of those ideas, and I'll share some tips on how to build your plan.

I'm pleased to report that we have good news on the new class, Non-Ballistic Self Defense, we are setting up. It is live on the website. We of course still have our Concealed Carry class happening on October 14th and again on November 11th. I recommend you register early, while there is still space. With the holidays coming up, you may want to book the Concealed Carry Mastery at the same time.**

It seems we are seeing more and more reports of emergencies lately. When we do, one of the common **issues is the loss of power to the home. There are an increasing number of choices when it comes to choosing a source of backup power. It is a deep subject and the key to success is research and planning.
It can be confusing and it doesn't matter if you go Gasoline Generator, Solar backup, or some of the new alternate systems. Your first task is to decide what you are going to keep running. Let's go over the basics.

I'll also talk about two really good things that happened this week to brighten my attitude and perhaps can help you with that as well. All that plus new classes are coming together nicely.**

September is National Preparedness Month, and it couldn't have come at a better time. August has been a veritable &^%$ Storm of disasters.
The tragedy in Lahina, blistering heat and drought, and fires up and down the West Coast have stressed everyone to the limit.
There are some common themes too. A report by our local County officials points out that "Milling" is an issue. People are told to leave and when officers check 30 minutes later they find folks haven’t moved. Why? They believe that it won't happen here. Or even worse…won't happen again.
There is a reoccurring theme of missed/incomplete…even non-existent communication of danger, and blame back and forth. One side says," Impossible to warn everyone" countered by charges of "no warnings being given". Add to that water shortages and the issues with powerlines.

Family, we need to slow down, get focused, and begin to take control of our own lives. Work to get decisions made. Do not wait to be led. Make sure you can be self-sufficient and stand on your own for 30 days. The Bug Out bag is the first step in that process.

A question for our area broadcasters: "Can I tune in to your radio or tv station in an emergency? I'm putting that question to our local media as it is one of the more common questions I get in my classes and presentations.

In addition, we will talk about the problems with just milling around when you get a notice to leave and how the two questions can actually blend together.

I talk a lot about planning. But what does that mean? We will look at the options for the first few days to help get you started. I'll discuss some Communication options from high-tech to really simple. All that and updates on our open classes for July and August,

Sometimes you head off in one direction on a project and something catches your attention and you are "down the rabbit hole", moving in a new direction. I was planning on talking about being able to help first responders if you are unable to speak. I was looking at the medical dog tags I wear and the connection to Memorial Day was too strong. The irony of speaking for those who can no longer speak for themselves was a bit too strong, as well as the connection to the aftermath of the Civil War.

The History teacher in me took over. I still included the basic information for you, but I also have some background on Decoration Day,  the event we now call Memorial Day. There will be a Quiz next week.

While fire starters and the latest solar toys are nice, a key part of P repping includes planning your finances too. This week's latest round of bank failures and job losses brought that home to me. I want to share some suggestions and links with you too.

Let's look at "needs"  compared to "wants", the importance of paying yourselves first, and just what high credit card interest rates do to your wallet, and self-esteem. It's a long road but a trip worth taking.

We have gone from frost and cold weather to temps already in the 80s since the last program. I've broken out my summer straw hat and sunscreen. That can be good news for the garden, but not so much for what emergency supplies you may need to have available in the car. A reminder of the danger of high car temps in the summer and options for storing water and first aid supplies correctly.

Nice seeing you at the MRPC Gun Show last weekend. I'll be answering a few questions that caught my ear. I've found something for a listener. The new Speakers Bureau is active on the web, so check that out too.

This week I explained the "why" of my long absence. That also leads us to how "Real Life" gives us a lot of opportunities to use our prepping skills. Sometimes it is not always a national disaster that kicks things into motion. It can be a personal one as well. It is even more important to be prepared in those cases too. This was a classic example of the positive value of not only planning but using and working that plan, to be ready for the curve balls that life throws.

I had someone ask if we teach other than CHL classes. (!) Yes, we have a full roster of classes. Please click the link at the bottom to get to the webpage for a full list.

Finally, the rabid ghost of Prop 114 still haunts the halls of Salem and efforts are still underway to make the Oregon Constitution read "Void where prohibited". Your positive ongoing action is needed.

(One final note: I discuss being sick with COVID during our move. I want to repeat that we did notify everyone involved in advance and took extra precautions to avoid making others sick, No negative after-effects were reported.)

This time I will be following up on the “Great Coffee Can” Question from last week regarding our emergency car heater project. With that under control, I have some great news as far as our listeners. The numbers are up! That has led to new directions for the podcast which I'll share at the end of this program.

But first, Let's check on the status of 114. Connected to that stupidity, l want to look at how three major businesses shutting down locations are a microcosm of our overall society.Mcdonald's, Chase Bank, and Starbucks have made the decision to shutter some stores and reduce hours. This is due to increases in crime and disruption due to drugs, mental illness, and even in some cases killings. Employee Safety concerns top the list.

I’ll talk about how my long-term planning for an upcoming trip brought some prep-related issues into focus.

I'll put on my tinfoil hat and meet with my secret source for a look at the latest conspiracy theory: The rising prices at the grocery store. It is making it very expensive **to be caught with egg on your face these days.

All that plus Class Updates and a Special Surprise announcement for 2023!**

Prop 114 is causing, as expected, a lot of misinformation and upset, as well as a spike in gun sales to beat the arbitrary Dec. 8th deadline.  Today we look at some of the negative impacts, the lawsuits moving forward as well as, an unexpected side effect.

A part of that has caused some misinformation concerning our Sheriff's Department and getting your CHL.  We want to correct that. I stand behind Sherriff Sickler and his team and appreciate his long-term positive support. Time to  step that back.

With apologies to Merel Haggard, November is a very busy month too. It is the beginning of a lot of different things. So as we head into November, lets talk about being prepared for them.

  • We've got the election season .I checked my trash container and I received over 1,400 emails this month from various political groups literally begging for money. A few more days and that will be over
  • November is the (official) beginning of the holidays
  • The "setting the clock back" drama  and all that goes with it,
  • Time to get prepared for cold-weather and all of the tasks that come due  with it.
  • The latest information on class openings. November  12th and December 10th
  • ... and  a Quick personal note.

This will complete our series of Programs for National Preparedness Month. For this week have, albeit a bit late

  • Some interesting news on Prop 114. Or, more reasons to vote no.
  • Due to the energetic pace of Oregon gun sales, class space is tight. We do still have a few spaces in Oct.(Reminder: We DO have gift certificates too.)
  • Time getting tight? Consider private classes as an option to fit your schedule- a small difference in price for personal training is well worth it for 1:1 attention.
  • Call it what you will-Stress, anxiety or tension we are all under it day to day. Add a disaster to that and there are things we need to be aware of. At look atsome warning signs to watch for in Adults and Children.

Here is the list of area Counseling Resources for Fire Survivors .

Produced on the Anniversary of the Alameda/ Obenchain fires that struck Ashland, Talent, Phoenix and Medford, with ash falling on the hoods of the cars from the recent fires, this episode marks a new direction. This is also National Preparedness Month, and well worth a look at the linked website.

I'm going to begin by doing a quick review of that is the same and what is different, with suggestions of new directions to take. An example? Water. While the common wisdom was to stock up on bottled water, (and it is STILL a good idea) there is a finite amount of space and weight a person can handle. Looking at Hurricanes and fire disasters, supplies may interrupted or unusable. So what are the alternatives in your own area? Can you filter undrinkable water easily and safely?

The next episodes will focus on these specific topics in more depth, with links to resources and references, I'll also be posing question for our to apply to your own situation like the one above.

IN other news the website has a new look and new simpler class registration. I have also highlighted a few of the more popular past Podcasts, and provide a link to all of the past years work.

Our Congealed Carry classes are indoors in an air conditioned building with advanced filtration. COVID protocols are of course a part of the process. Stop by to check out the site. Your comments and email are welcome. Share them with bill@wits-and.com. Letters that are of value to the group may be shared on future podcasts.

Please share this program for non profit, educational purposes. It may not be edited or resold.

Three years ago I began sharing information on Bug out Bags and Preparedness with you, our listeners. It's ironic that it was September 8th, while preparing a podcast, the Alameda fire began and all of those ideas and plans were tested.

Hello everyone I’m Bill Bateman, part of the team here at refuse to be victim personal protection training. This is a very special episode of Survival beyond the Bug out Bag-Preparing for disaster.

Instead of reviewing products and general information, I want to look at what worked when I had to evacuate and share real-time product information. I live in Talent, one of the cities that suffered significant damage, and was one of the lucky ones. The flames came with two blocks of my house.

There were many who were not so lucky My heart goes out to those who lost it all. Just this morning I passed the all too familiar scene of a person standing in the debris of what was their home and just looking. Some are standing on the sidewalk looking, as if not ready to make those first steps on the property to accept what is in front of them. I know that feeling. I stood with my parents as they shifted through the ashes of our family home following the Panorama fire in Nov of 81. I feel your pain.

A giant thank you to the firefighters and all of the first responders. Also a big thank you to the communities involved who came together so quickly to open evacuation centers- and then support them with donations. Thank you.

**So let's look at what worked, what didn't, and how to reset for the next time.
