Quirt Evans (John Wayne), a cowboy on the run, is injured when his horse stumbles near a Quaker family's land. The family takes him in as he regains his health, and he falls for their young daughter, Penelope (Gail Russell). As Quirt falls deeper in love and becomes accustomed to the family's peaceful ways, his violent past starts to catch up to him.

American Empire 1942 After the Civil War, friends Dan Taylor (Richard Dix) and Paxton Bryce (Preston Foster) yearn for new lives. Brothers Of The West 1937 Detective Tom Wade (Tom Tyler) has to investigate the truth behind a robbery and murder of a bank president that's being blamed on Tom's brother, Ed (Bob Terry), who is nowhere to be found. Also trying to find out what happened is the bank president's daughter, Celia Chandler (Lois Wilde). She initially suspects Ed, who is actually being held hostage to prevent him from talking.
