On this episode I sit down for one of my favorite conversations I have had on the podcast for a while. Dr. Gary Chimes is a medical doctor in Bellevue, WA and specializes in Sports Medicine. His practice is unique in the fact that he focused on helping people optimize their physical health and reach the next level of performance.
Dr. Chimes is currently writing a book with a working title of "50 is the new 50". This is all about how to get the most out of your middle ages. He touches on some great points and tactical advice for those of you aged 40-60.
Dive into the topic of specialization and variance in physical therapy, comparing the differences between smoking and obesity, and how healthcare providers can tackle these topics without coming off as rude. Explore how physical therapists can safely teach patients to squat and progress, as well as the concept of subspecialty and the importance of allowing providers to focus on their areas of expertise.
Finally, join us as we explore athletic self-selection and skill sets, discussing the different muscle fibers and the importance of precision and excellence in endurance sports. We reflect on our athletic journeys and background. Listen in as we share our thoughts on navigating risk and middle age, exercise strategies for aging, and the importance of stress management and domain specificity in our lives.

In this episode we chat with Kelly Edwards, Founder of Local Hoops and Head Coach for Bellevue High School Basketball. Kelly has some amazing knowledge and experience when it comes to leadership and coaching and he shares that with us today!
About Kelly:
"Kelly played for O’Dea High school, and won the state 3A championship three out of his four years there, 04, 05, 07 (they lost in the championship game his junior year- 06).
After O’Dea he played for Che Dawson at Highline Community College. They won the Western Division title his sophomore year, giving them the #1 seed to the NWAC tournament, where they lost in the semi-finals.
Kelly went on to play at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon for his junior and senior years. He was named Second-Team All Conference his junior year, with 16.5 points and 5 rebounds per game, and First Team All Conference his senior year, with 19 points and 7 rebounds per game, ranking his Pioneers as high as #24 in the nation that year.
After college Kelly played professionally for the ABA, and is still active in the Jamal Crawford Summer Pro League. In 2019 summer he averaged 28 ppg, 9.5 rpg & 7.5 apg. Kelly turned down professional opportunities overseas to grow LocalHOOPS into what it is today. He has played with or against the likes of NBA pros such as: Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson, Isaiah Thomas, Martell Webster, Brandon Roy, Jason Terry, Lamarcus Aldridge, Terry Rozier, Dejounte Murray, Zach Lavine, James Johnson, Earl Clark, Mario Chalmers, and many more.
Outside of basketball, Kelly is a father of 3 – when you are in the gym keep an eye out for his wife Cindy, who is head of operations for LocalHOOPS, and his two sons KJ & Kamani, as well as his daughter Kamaya, who are already beginning to work on their handle.
Throughout it all, Kelly’s passion remains Local Hoops and its athletes. He loves giving back to the community that gave him so much. "I wouldn't trade this for the world!"."

Dr. McKeown has an inclusive practice welcoming all patients. Some of her special interests include Senior/Geriatric Podiatry and overall health, diabetic limb salvage, reconstructive foot surgery, and foot issues involving special needs children.

This weeks episode is one of the most informative we've had yet!
Max is a super smart guy and we were pumped to get some of our own questions answered by him and really just "talk shop".
IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
Mitch- What does “strong by science” mean to you and why did you choose that as your brand?
Zach- my background for sports was as a triple and long jumper. I spend over a decade training plyos heavily. Over time it became harder to continue that training due to injury. How do you Program plyometrics? How do you balance joint loading with training?
Mitch- I wanna talk about Sport specific movements vs. just building overall strength. On one side we have people trying to make everything as sport specific as possible, on the other we have the argument that overall strength transfers no matter what. What is your take and how do you program based on this?
Zach- when I was training for track I was all about moving at the speed at which I was going to be competing you always drove me crazy when coaches wouldn't have us go full speed until the week before our first meet. Thoughts on train slow move slow? Should power athletes improve their aerobic system even if it means moving slow?
Mitch- What are 3 things top-tier athletes do in their training that’s different than those that don’t make it or are mediocre? Essentially, what should athletes listening start doing?
Zach- my philosophy on training has changed quite a bit over time as I have been a physical therapist. You talked about your framework, do you have any over arching philosophies or principals some one can take away from this about training today?
Mitch- We’ve heard you talk about adaptive currency, tell us about that and how can someone know where they’re at?
Zach- Tell us a bit about Upper Echelon Nutrition
