Ep 92 This will be my last podcast for a little while, so thought I would end on a super positive high with the incredible Paul Goodenough, a true storyteller, narrator and positive genius. Paul brings together a new narrative around some of the common problems in today's society and with a huge dollop of humour. I LOVED recording this session with Paul and it really gave me the boost I needed, thank you Paul.

Paul is an award-winning, purpose-driven storyteller and entrepreneur, working in the environmental, charity, peace-building and entertainment sectors.

For over two decades, Goodenough has founded andled top-flight creative agencies. He launched his first digital agency, Aerian Studios, at the age of 18, enlisting older family and friends to pose as him at meetings, convinced potential clients would be put off by his youth.

Aerian Studios went on to become one of the mostrespected agencies in the UK, creating industry-leading campaigns, websites, products and mobile apps for the BBC, CNN, Warner Bros, Sky, Vodafone, BAFTA,the UK Government and many more.

In 2011, Goodenough founded the production companyGBK Hybrid with Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz and Iron Giant and Disney animator Richard Bazley. Goodenough was nominated for an Emmy in 2015 for his work as a producer on the 2015 multi-award-winning TV Movie LostTreasure Hunt.

In 2019, Goodenough co-founded Rewriting Earth(formerly Rewriting Extinction). Now an independent charity, Rewriting Earth began as a 12-month cross-charity project raising money and awareness for the climate and biodiversity crisis, using the powerful storytelling medium of comics and videos. Goodenough single-handedly forged collaborations between 300+ celebrities, comic artists and experts to create high-impact environmental stories that deliver clear information to mainstream audiences.

Within 12 months, Rewriting Earth raised £1.54m forthe different charities involved, helping to protect 662 species with important milestones, like helping the World Land Trust purchase and protect Guatemala’s Laguna Grande Reserve. The project was recognised for reaching a wide, global audience, attaining over 150 million engagements with people not traditionally engaged in environmental issues.

The truth behind the rhetoric - in this episode we can get the chance to hear from others who have had the unfortunate experience of Stephen Fern.

Thank you for your bravery in coming forward, I know the fear of association, fear of reputational risk and embarrassment was too great for so many others to speak out, which we all understand.

As always please ensure you do your due diligence. You may want to check to see if you are connected to this man on LinkedIn.

You can find out more about this individual on my LinkedIn posts and more importantly what you can't find online, are any accounts, any team, websites, or delivered projects.

Amazing talking to Kieron on how he is approaching a smarter way for global consumption through technology.

Kieron started Freer in 2019 out of a real-life need and realised that many others had the same requirement - to use products only when required rather than owning them and having them sit idle for 99% of the time. Whilst the idea germinated, was researched and brought to fruition, Kieron called upon his 20-year career in project and programme management to bring the skills required of discipline, determination and resilience to cut through many of the challenges along the way including COVID lockdowns (rather tricky to encourage people to go to each other’s houses in the middle of a killer pandemic), a dysfunctioning app delivered by an overseas 3rd party and a plethora of naysayers who said it’d never work. Kieron says his ability to persevere, keep focused and always be positive comes from his previous career as an engineer in the British Army. Kieron is trying to build Freer as a force for change in the way we consume everyday items and is convinced that by combining community action, connectivity and convenience we can use and consume items in a much smarter, economically and socially responsible way.

With that inspiration, he created The OAK Network, to ensure future generations can prosper in a green and sustainable future for all, powered by nature.

The OAK network uses data to ensure humans, nature, and tech can thrive in a NET ZERO future by enabling a sustainable approach that puts People, Planet, and Profit in that order

Incredible to chat with Erika, based in Singapore, we discussed all things regenerative small holdings and future plans. Erika is a purpose-driven thought leader in agriculture, ex-corporate marketeer, entrepreneur, and consultant. With over 20 years of experience in agriculture, she worked in corporates, NGOs, governments, consultancy, and start-ups. Erika holds an MBA (Netherlands) and an MPA from Harvard University.

Erika has worked across Europe, Africa, and Asia developing and implementing impactful projects in climate-smart agriculture focusing on smallholder farmers.

Mid 2021 Erika founded The Sustainable Smallholder, an expert platform for thought leadership, advisory, and training. The platform works with the private sector, social enterprises, and start-ups to help transition to sustainable, profitable, innovative agriculture models.

The Sustainable Smallholder’s fundamental belief is that the risk for smallholders to change is too high; unless we deeply listen to them and co-create sustainable solutions and implementation models with them, the adoption rates will remain low.

In parallel Erika also serves on the Board of Advisors for many other social enterprise start-ups.

What a drop the mic moment when you really delve into the impact of your actions, investments, or business practices! Amazing to talk to Gail Hurley who joined Tobacco Free Portfolios in February 2021 as TFP’s UK/Europe Advocate to advance tobacco-free finance with UK and European financial institutions. Gail worked for the United Nations Development Programme for 10 years as a Senior Policy Advisor on Development Finance in New York and has also held roles in the non-profit sector where she continues to serve in several Board and advisory roles. In addition to her position at TFP, she is a Fellow with Development Initiatives, an international development organisation.

In her work for the UN, Gail led a team which worked to develop the world’s first tobacco control social impact bond for smallholder tobacco farmers in Zambia to support them to transition to alternative livelihoods (see here and here). She saw firsthand how tobacco cultivation traps poor communities in poverty and contributes to deforestation and poor health and nutritional outcomes in the communities that farm it. By developing and investing in financial instruments that make a positive social and environmental impact, the financial sector can become part of the solution. Gail is passionate about international development and environmental conservation, particularly the world’s oceans where she has also championed awareness in the investment community of a sustainable ocean economy and opportunities for innovative new finance approaches. She has worked in several countries.

Gail has written extensively on sustainable finance and international development over the years, and has contributed articles and chapters to several journals and books. She has also written for many development and business media outlets on numerous sustainable finance topics.

When it comes to creating a waste free world and understanding the value of the waste we have already created, I am delighted to bring Plant Nutrition Technologies global patented solution to share with you with the CEO Dennis. His bio is here, I was born in the Napa Valley of California a fourth generation California native...we are more rare than you might think. I grew up in the farms and fields of the Monterey and Watsonville farming country then my father took us to Washington state for work in the onion fields and hay fields and on to Idaho for the same.

After graduating from Christian boarding school where I received a first rate education I travelled a bit on my thumb then joined the US Air Force.

In the Air Force I went to Fighter Jet Weapons Systems Tech school where I was told that I was the first student to ever pass the course with 100% for the entire course...it was a shock to me. They made me an instructor right out of school. We taught basic electronics and weapons systems for fighter jets. I also learned how to administer a very large operation with 4000 students. In the Air Force I learned that I had a gift for strategic thinking and planning. I use the skills and education I gained in the Air Force every day.

After the Air Force I found a place in the automotive industry as an electrical specialist because of all the new solid state electronics that were being used in automobiles and none of the mechanics were prepared for the changes. I stayed in that profession for 35 years while being a father to my 3 boys and 1 daughter.

During this time I learned of the amount of gold and silver available in the mine waste of California and Nevada.

My associates and I formed a corporation to begin the Research and Development of environmentally sound processes for the recovery of these values. The State of California told us that if we processed mine waste we were responsible for the waste so we researched the markets that could use finely powdered rock. That is when we discovered that it could be turned into 100% Natural fertilizer.

From there we had it Certified and Registered with the State of California and began the more difficult uphill battle of educating the farmers to the environmental dangers of chemical fertilizers and the benefits of rock powder based fertilizers.

Our first serious use of our products resulted in us doubling the harvest of a small 7 acre almond orchard that was dying and scheduled for replacement. That was 6 years ago and we have matched that first year's yield or bettered it every year since. The yield in that orchard is better than it had ever been in its 20 year history.

We have also achieved phenomenal results in Hemp and Canola and are in a 90 acre Field Trial with baby almond orchards right now. We are also in a Field Trial with Cannabis which we tested and grew 8 foot plants with NO chemicals of any kind.

Honoured to have Charlie as my guest for this episode, we talk about the impacts of Covid on conservation and Charlie's role over the years, with a bit of Royal support too. Educated at Wellington College, Charlie Mayhew spent two years travelling and working in South Africa, Switzerland and Australia. After returning home, he started work as a Lloyds Marine Insurance Broker with Willis Faber & Dumas Ltd, moonlighting as a DJ! In 1985 he set up and led the successful Young Europe Africa Expedition. The 33 strong team made up of seven nationalities crossed the Sahara and travelled through the Congo before arriving in Kenya, where it undertook a series of conservation and community projects filmed for a Channel 4 TV documentary. The 7-month adventure concluded in Cape Town. On his return in Mayhew was elected a Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society. After working for a small boutique financial services firm, Mayhew formed his own financial service business, which he later sold to the St James’s Place Group. In 1990 he co-founded the charity, Tusk Trust, and, as part of the stimulus for doing so, he co-produced the feature film ‘Lost in Africa’– a drama that sought to highlight the ivory trade. Under Mayhew’s stewardship, Tusk has since grown into becoming a highly reputable and efficient UK conservation NGO with HRH The Duke of Cambridge being the charity’s active Royal Patron since 2005. Mayhew has accompanied The Duke on a number of overseas trips, including tours to Africa, China and Vietnam. Tusk’s revenue in 2019 amounted to £9.7m, supporting a significant and diverse portfolio of conservation and community projects right across Africa. Mayhew also sits on the Board of the Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust and Community Conservation Fund Africa. In 2005, he was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty The Queen in recognition of his services to conservation in Africa.

In this episode, we talk about diversifying in business, culture, taking risks, and some great adventures. Julian's pace, humility, and drive are infectious and I hope you listeners will get some great advice and words of wisdom, enjoy.

Australian born and came to the UK to manage an engineering firm in the environmental space. After 3 years, he took the decision to set up on his own with a partner, this proved to be a very successful venture. To say he took a leap in a different direction is an understatement, in 2009 he decided to build a plane, as you do! And travel across Europe. When Julian went back to Oz, he bought a piece of land in Queensland living in nature, where his next ‘Spark’ of ideas came, he founded and began Spark Brewery and gained a global patent. This also led him onto his next business adventure and launched a zero alcohol beer.

In the last decade, by balancing passions for strong business and tasty beer Julian has grown Spark from a small engineering consultancy into the nation's leading supplier of brewing and distilling systems. He and his team have designed and built systems for 47 businesses around the country and are accelerating in summer 2021.

By specialising in compact breweries that are easy to retrofit to existing venues, he is excited to be part of the evolution of pubs in Australia this century. He enjoys working with clients to develop unique experiences for their patrons that set each venue apart from the crowd and improves the bottom line from month one.

Absolutely LOVED recording this episode, honest frank and discussion what most people avoid! Emma Sayle, Founder, and CEO of the Wearekk brands; Killing Kittens, Safedate, Sistr, and The Sisterhood In 2005 there was nowhere women could go to feel in control and explore their sexuality in a safe environment, so Emma created Killing Kittens. KK has grown in to a fierce army of over 160,000 sexually liberated people around the world, through events hosted from London to New York, Venice to Sydney on top of a global online community platform. Global press regularly pronounces Emma a leader in female sexual liberation and empowerment. When Emma started Killing Kittens 15 years ago, she wanted to create a brand that stood for women and want they wanted. Greater awareness of female sexuality and sexual freedom was slowly becoming more socially and commercially acceptable, but there was still a long way to go in an industry that claimed to be for women but run almost exclusively run by men. She knew that to empower women sexually, it had to be with a business that put them first. Since setting up the first parties, Emma has fully expanded the business, which now operates both on and offline. This autumn Emma will be launching the hotly awaited KK social network and dating app (think Facebook meets Bumble) as well as virtual workshops offering sex education and advice for singles and couples. During lockdown, KK also became the world leader in virtual adult parties, creating world-wide press coverage for their virtual adult parties, held weekly across all major time zones from London to New York and Sydney. Emma understands that a successful business can’t be built without a passion and a team who believes in it just as much, and that one must have fire in the belly to take on an industry that is almost universally run by men, like the adult and ‘sex-tech’ industries. Unfortunately, there is still a huge amount of bias and misconceptions to address, but Emma has never once doubted her belief to lead the business and keep pushing the boundaries. It is true, sadly, that sexual discrimination is still alive and kicking in many sectors, across all levels, and many women struggle to be treated with the respect they deserve. She has learned that the best way to deal with the negativity is to stick to the facts, stick to the evidence; track your achievements, demonstrate your successes and let the facts and figures do the talking. In 2018 Emma led the business through a funding round. The first ever public crowdfund for an adult sector brand of this nature and closed the round at 118% overfunded. The second funding round closed completely funded in just four days – raising a total of £1m over the two rounds. The latest funding round has again closed overfunded after just 10 days. In August Killing Kittens again hit global headlines having received £170,000 as part of HM Government’s Future Fund, matching the £170,000 raise from Seedrs. The KK Group portfolio of brands, including Killing Kittens, now also includes Sistr, a dedicated online platform for women in business to connect, share and learn from one another, especially important during the current crisis when women in the workplace are under threat. Emma has also launched Safedate, an app for anyone wanting to stay safe whilst online dating. www.wearekk.com

In this episode, we discuss Laura's journey, sobriety, and why she founded Club Soda.  Laura Willoughby MBE is co-founder of Club Soda, the Mindful Drinking Movement. Their aim is to create a world where nobody feels out of place not drinking. Club Soda has individuals, drinks brands, and social spaces in its membership.  The inspiration for Club Soda comes Laura’s experience of giving up drinking seven years ago. A campaigner at heart with a background in movement building and politics, she realised that one of the big sticking points was a way to support people to take a self-guided journey to change their drinking.  Club Soda has over 50,000 individual members, have built a venue listing guide for mindful drinkers (clubsodaguide.com) and they run the UK’s only Mindful Drinking Festival which is now in it’s 7th edition. She is the author of How to Be a Mindful Drinker, a new book for 2020 published by DK books.   Laura is chair of Imbibe’s No & Low Taste Awards judging panel for 2020.

In this episode, I talk to my life long friend Nicky Adcock.  It was a challenging episode to record based on the story of her son Jack Adcock who sadly passed away on February 18th, 2011.  What happened over the next 7 years was horrific for all those involved.  The death of Jack was featured across all national media channels and a Panorama show.  We discuss Sepsis awareness and how taking on one of the biggest establishments and their family journey.  I must say that whilst we all know what is happening in the NHS right now, this is not about bringing down the amazing NHS as a whole, but seeking to root out those that make multiple 'barn door' mistakes, leading to a conviction of Gross Negligence Manslaughter. #justiceforjack
