Edward Gross is a writer and veteran entertainment journalist who has written books and articles on film, television, and comic books since the mid-1980s. There was a dearth of new “mainstream” Dark Shadows material available in the 80s, but Ed came to the rescue with the Dark Shadows Files magazine series. He visits the podcast to discuss his lifelong fandom for DS and these memorable Files publications, which included his interviews with many DS cast and crew members such as Jonathan Frid, Grayson & Sam Hall, Art Wallace, Ron Sproat and more. In addition, we take a fun side-trip into Ed’s longtime enthusiasm for Superman. Other topics include: Willard, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, whether there should be a new Dark Shadows, and more!

A somewhat salty, and possibly insane, Penny Dreadful addresses another batch of DS continuity, plot, character, and canon questions in this episode, inspired by Dale Clark’s wonderful Dark Shadows Books of Questions and Answers which were published between 1989 and 1995. In this installment, the following questions are addressed: Would Julia’s treatments have permanently cured Barnabas? When Barnabas is in his coffin during the day, is he sleeping and can he be awakened? How does Laura Collins “work”? Was Barnabas destroyed at the end of House of Dark Shadows? Where were Gerard’s pirates in 1840? Stagehands in the shot? Mic shadows, boom mics, and cameras in the shot?

The ghosts that haunt the Collinwood estate represent the most numerous and diverse group of supernatural beings in Dark Shadows. Some spirits are helpful, offering spectral warnings in attempts to assist the living. Others are malevolent, bent on revenge… or worse. Many are tragic figures, doomed to wander the halls of Collinwood or the Old House for all eternity. Bobby Lugosi and Katherine Gonzales visit the podcast to discuss some of our favorite DS ghosts and revenants! Other discussion topics include Night of Dark Shadows, DS collectibles, and real-life ghostly encounters. Bobby Lugosi is a Rondo Award-winning monster kid influencer who runs the very popular Lugosi Theatre channel on YouTube and social media. Katherine Gonzales runs the Discount Artificial Sweetener channel on YouTube where she posts her song creations (Katherine's lyrics, with music made using AI tools) based on Dark Shadows storylines, characters, and other topics.

Issues 1 through 23 comprised the bulk of the series and featured the comic’s main storyline, a continuation of the original show set in 1971. There was also a 5 issue Dark Shadows-Vampirella miniseries and then a 6 issue Dark Shadows: Year One miniseries, which was a reimagining of the TV serial’s 1795 storyline. Returning to the podcast to discuss the Dynamite Comics are writer and editor, Rich Handley, and Madelyn Marks, administrator of the Dark Shadows Discord group!

In the tradition of Dale Clark’s memorable fan publications, comes the Dark Shadows Podcast of Questions & Answers volume THREE! In this installment, Penny Dreadful addresses the following questions: How did Roxanne become a vampire in the unaltered 1840? Why isn’t Chris Jennings’ brother Tom also werewolf? Was Angelique really at Collinwood in the original run of 1897, as we see in a flashback? Is it an error that silver bullets can be used to destroy vampires on Dark Shadows? How can Barnabas be rendered unconscious in a car accident if he's a vampire? Why does Josette’s music box play two different themes? What happened to the blackmail money that Elizabeth Collins Stoddard deposited into a Swiss bank account for Jason McGuire? When the ghost of Sarah Collins says, “Those who were here before have come back, and they’re angry, and there’s someone in this house they want to destroy,” to whom is she referring? The episode ends with promotion for other Dark Shadows and horror-related podcasts, shows, books, and projects.

Although its run was short-lived, NBC’s 1991 Dark Shadows revival series left indelible fang marks upon its fans. A beautifully produced prime-time series helmed by Dan Curtis himself, the ’91 DS featured the likes of Ben Cross, Joanna Going, Barbara Steele, Jean Simmons, Roy Thinnes, Lysette Anthony, Adrian Paul, and a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt, among many others. While the series generated much excitement among the fanbase and debuted to great success, it was unceremoniously canceled after only twelve episodes. Two of the show’s diehard fans, Dominique Lamssies and Steven Stark, who first became DS fans by way of the 1991 series, visit the podcast to help examine the show’s characters and plotlines. Other topics include: ’91 series merchandise, music, costumes, Collinwood, home video releases, turtleneck sweaters, and more!

Welcome to the second installment of Terror at Collinwood’s Dark Shadows Podcast of Questions and Answers! In this episode, the following questions are addressed:Why didn’t Daniel Collins know about the family secret in 1840? Did Edith Collins really die in the altered 1840? What happened to the link between Barnabas and Adam? What job did Barnabas command Willie to do in 1967? Why is David no longer afraid of Barnabas after 1795? What does the “you must intercede with Oscar” letter mean? How did Peter Bradford recognize Danielle Roget in the past when she was played by Marie Wallace instead of Erica Fitz? Sit back and listen as a mad Penny Dreadful “spackles” some of the series’ most mind-bending conundrums.

RIP legendary filmmaker Roger Corman 1926-2024

The Dream Curse storyline in Dark Shadows was inspired by an obscure 1957 horror novel called The Dreamers, written by Roger Manvell. Although this was revealed by writer Ron Sproat at the first DS Festival, many remain unaware of the book and its influence on the Dream Curse plot. Returning to the podcast are Amanda Desiree and Stephen R. Shutt, who are both writers and longtime fans of Dark Shadows andall things spooky. We spend the first half of this episode examining The Dreamers, comparing and contrasting the novel to the plot line in the show. In the second half of the episode, we have some fun interpreting the symbolism of the DS Dream Curse as we try to determine the greatest fear of each dreamer.

In the spirit of Dale Clark’s “Dark Shadows Book of Questions and Answers” series comes the first installment of Terror at Collinwood’s Dark Shadows PODCAST of Questions and Answers! In this episode, the following questions are addressed: How can it be that Josette’s maiden name was originally Lafreniere, and that she was said to have died in 1834, when we know this was not the case? Who was Abner Collins? How did Quentin end up sealed in his room in the unaltered version of 1897? How could Dr. Lang know about Dave Woodard? Is Barnabas a hero or a villain? Are the Leviathans aliens? Why was Amy called Molly at first? Listen, as Penny Dreadful unleashes a frenzied torrent of in-universe explanations, with references to everything from H.P. Lovecraft, to Marvel's Punisher, to the plays of William Shakespeare, and more!

The twenty-first annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are upon us! A special category in the Rondos is the write-in for Monster Kid Hall of Fame, which honors those who’ve made a permanent mark on the world of classic horror appreciation. Many of the inductees are/were fans of the genre themselves. This award is a rare distinction indeed, and there are several notable recipients. Missing from the list, however, is Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis! This episode of Terror at Collinwood includes a series of interview clips featuring Dan Curtis himself, along with writer Sam Hall and actress Lara Parker. The clips help illustrate why Curtis should be considered for Monster Kid Hall of Fame status. A known enthusiast of classic terror tales and motion pictures, Curtis certainly made prominent puncture marks on the genre with Dark Shadows. He also unleashed the iconic The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, and he helmed adaptations of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Turn of the Screw, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. He directed both Dark Shadows MGM feature films, the horror cult classics Burnt Offerings, Trilogy of Terror, Dead of Night, and many more! After his epic miniseries Winds of War and War and Remembrance, he returned to the world of the gothic with the 1991 Dark Shadows revival series, which featured horror legend Barbara Steele (who is also long past due for induction into the Monster Kid Hall of Fame). Released in 1971, MGM’s ‘Night of Dark Shadows’ was the second DS feature film. Directed by Dan Curtis, the motion picture featured many members of the TV series cast in a gothic tale of ghostly obsession. A claustrophobic sense of doom pervades the Summer of 1970, the final present-day storyline on Dark Shadows. Meanwhile, they must also deal with a mysterious new vampire who prowls the estate. Professor and writer David M. Wingrove and writer Stephen R. Shutt visit the Terror at Collinwood podcast to dissect and explore this oft-ignored and/or scorned storyline, examining its various literary inspirations along the way. Often seen as DS’ attempt to recapture the success of the 'Turn of the Screw'-inspired “ghosts of Quentin and Beth” storyline, Summer of 1970 pulls inspiration from several classic sources, including tales by Oliver Onions and M.R. James, with a nod to Sheridan Le Fanu.

Robert Cobert’s iconic music themes for Dark Shadows were integral to the identity of the entire series and its two film spinoffs. Musician, author, and DePaul University College of Law professor, Ben Alba, visits the podcast to discuss and celebrate some favorite Cobert pieces. Throughout the course of episode, Ben even plays a few bars from several of the themes on his keyboard. Topics include: Ben’s lifelong fascination with the music from Dark Shadows, playing on the piano for fans at a Dark Shadows Festival, Bob Cobert’s incredible range as a composer, Dark Shadows soundtrack albums, and much more!

Correction: According to the interview with Bob Cobert in the booklet included with Discs 5 & 6 of ‘The Complete Dark Shadows Soundtrack Music Collection’ – “Many people assume that the instrument playing the Dark Shadows theme was a Theremin, but it wasn’t. The opening theme was neither a Theremin nor an Ondes Martinot. It was a Yamaha synthesizer with a string on it that made a Theremin-like sound. We couldn’t find an Ondes Martinot player or a Theremin player in New York, so we used that, and it was played by a very famous pianist named Dick Hyman… What you’re hearing in the theme is, melodically, a Yamaha on top, an alto flute on the bottom, then a bass, vibes, and harp, playing atonal accompaniment – five players in all.” I actually knew about this but misremembered the tweaked synthesizer organ as the way Robert Cobert initially presented the theme to Dan Curtis. Cobert presented the theme to Curtis by describing it and sort of whistling it while shaking his head about. I pulled the instrument listing (including the Theremin) from an online article and should have double-checked everything before recording the episode. Apologies. Also, from the same interview: “Almost all of the Dark Shadows music cues were recorded in England. It was money, pure and simple... the theme itself was recorded in New York.”
