Raena Shirali is a poet, editor, and educator whose latest book SUMMONINGS won the 2021 Hudson Prize. The book examines present-day witch hunting in India. Shirali reads from the book, discusses some of the formatting choices she made, and explains the connections she sees between explicit witch hunting in India, and social practices in the United States that similarly endanger women.

Marty Gervais, the first Poet Laureate of Windsor, Ontario, reads from his new book MEETING THOREAU AT THE GAS STATION DINER, a collection of poems about his adventures hitchhiking across Canada in the late 1960s. The Open Mic of the Air is a project from Poetry Spoken Here that began just over two years ago. When in-person poetry events were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Open Mic of the Air was created as a way for poets from around the world to connect and have a creative outlet. Now, over 100 poets have been featured and we look forward to many, many more!

Mark Doty reading at the Unamuno Author Festival. The festival took place in May of 2019 in Madrid, Spain. This reading was recorded at Desperate Literature, an independent bookstore in Madrid.
Doty has won the National Book Award for his 2008 collection "Fire to Fire: New and Collected Poems." He was also the first American poet to win the T.S. Elliot prize. In addition to his poems, Doty has written several glowingly reviewed and much-awarded memoirs including "Heaven’s Coast" and "Firebird" and the NYTimes best seller, "Dog Years."
This reading was recorded almost one year to the day before the killing of George Floyd, and ends with a poem Doty wrote reflecting on the death of Tamir Rice, a twelve year old black boy shot and killed by the police while paying with a toy gun. You’ll hear the rawness of the emotion behind the poem in his reading.

Maldonado is the author of the 2011 book "one-bedroom solo" and of "that’s what you get" which came out earlier this year from Brooklyn Arts Press. She grew up in New York City and her family hails from Honduras. During the reading she mentions one of her long-term projects: an ongoing work growing out of what she refers to on her website as “a lifelong obsession with the ancient Maya.”

Pádraig Ó Tuama, a poet and theologian, presents Poetry Unbound as part of On Being Studios and has been dedicated to the cause of peace and reconciliation including a five year stint as the head of Ireland's oldest peace and reconciliation community, the Corrymeela Community. His background as a public speaker and broadcaster comes through in this reading, as do his interests in religion, conflict, connection, community, and healing.

Clint Bruce talks about his new book Afro-Creole Poetry from Louisiana's Radical Civil War Era Newspapers. The book is full pf poetry and history with lessons that reach through to the present. Bruce dug into two papers founded during the Civil War by free people of color in New Orleans. Bruce reads poems from the book and illuminates often overlooked events from the Reconstruction Era including the New Orleans massacre. His discovery of newspaper records on the massacre's aftermath, previously thought to have vanished, show a different history - and one closer to the truth - than that presented in most media coverage from the time.

Luis J. Rodriguez is a chicano poet whose memoir “Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days” was a national bestseller. In 2014 he was named Los Angeles poet laureate a position he held until 2016. He has been nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and has written everything from poetry and criticism to children’s books. A first ever Poetry Spoken Here rebroadcast! Episode 100 of Poetry Spoken Here featured Jericho Brown reading at the Unamuno Author Festival. In honor of Jericho Brown being awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry for his book The Tradition, we wanted to re-share this reading.
The Unamuno Author Festival took place in the spring of 2019 in Madrid, Spain.
Jericho Brown was recently awarded the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. He has also won a Guggenheim fellowship, invented a poetic form, and had his poems featured in The New Yorker, the Paris Review, and the Bennington Review among others. His latest collection The Tradition, for which he won the Pulitzer, was released in 2019 to wide praise. This reading was part of an evening celebrating of the 25th anniversary of the Civitella Ranieri retreat program.

Octavio Quintanilla is currently the poet laureate of San Antonia Texas. He is the author of the 2014 collection "If I Go Missing." In addition to writing poetry and fiction he is also a photographer. His work has appeared in journals such as Alaska Quarterly Review, Southwestern American Literature, and The Texas Observer. “Frontexto: A Return Home” an exhibit incorporating his poetry and sketches was displayed at The Weslaco Museum.
