Evann sits down with Trice Clark, a creative who specializes in the art of “Doing it Yourself.” As a mom, maker and handywoman, Trice created her Designer Hack series with the fashionably frugal in mind. With Designer Hack, Trice teaches attendees how to recreate high end trends from accessories to home décor. Her latest endeavor has led her to begin fabricating backdrops and activations to increase the experiences at local events with designated branded photo ops. And just like a true Detroit girl, Trice has another hustle: during the day, she works as the Warehouse Manager at Arts & Scraps, a local nonprofit that teaches STEM through arts integration.
Trice’s desire and drive for making is admirable. In the minds of many, there is nothing that she can’t do. She’s constantly striving for better, and says that a lot of her inspiration comes from her super-cool son, David, and the women in her community that are also working toward fulfilling their dreams.

With her stationery company, Paisley Paper Co., Andrea creates tongue-in-cheek greeting cards, notepads, planners and tote bags. The products from Paisley Paper are sold in 15 stores nationwide and 2 stores locally, and Andrea is hoping to expand to more!
Since the opening of Paisley Paper Co. began with participating in craft fairs, Andrea realized a need for a craft fair for crafters of color – thus going on to create the In Color Craft Market, a craft fair that will be held in Detroit in September of 2020.

Evann sits down with Nicole Lindsey, co-founder of Detroit Hives, to talk all about the importance of honeybees! When Nicole learned about the declination of the bee population, she knew she had to do something. Since January 2017, Nicole has served as an educator and beekeeper who is devoted to altering negative stigmas about honeybees and informing others of the crucial roles that bees play, as well as their importance to the environment.

Evann sits down with Lauren “Lo” McGrier to talk about her work as a personal assistant, event manager, and the brains behind Twerk x Tequila. Lauren is really the one you call if you need help getting something done. She’s not afraid to get her hands dirty, and she’ll do what needs to be done to help bring her clients’ visions to life.
Last year, Lauren decided that it was time to start her own brand, so she launched “Connect With Lo,” a platform that allows people to see the work she’s done, as well as book her for her services. In that same year, she introduced her Twerk x Tequila party series to Detroit, and saw instant success. Lauren markets Twerk x Tequila as a “women’s empowerment event,” because she believes that it’s possible for women to come together to network outside of the traditional Happy Hour and panel discussion. After a few sold out runs in Detroit, Lauren began to experiment with markets outside of the city. She held a Twerk x Tequila in New Orleans during Essence Fest, and is taking the party to Chicago at the end of this month.

After carefully observing how young, Black Detroiters are underserved in the live entertainment and media industries, Leah came up with the concept for the Kindred Music & Culture Festival. The inaugural festival was held in August 2018, and focused on highlighting the young, Black creatives in Detroit. With one festival under her belt, Leah expresses feeling more calm this time around, but still has the same end goal in mind: for people to have a good, Black ass time.

This week, Evann sits down with her good friend Jamie Wadsworth, who is the founder of One Fragrance Co. One Fragrance Co. is a gender neutral fragrance line created for everybody and every body. Jamie started her company last year after wanting to wear men’s cologne, but hesitated out of fear that people would think the scent was too “manly” for her. She decided it was time for a change, and released her first fragrance, “Enigma,” a light, refreshing, citrusy scent, in fall 2018.
Although Jamie is an entrepreneur, she didn’t go to school with the intention of becoming one. She has a Bachelors in Human Development & Family Studies from Bowling Green State University, and initially wanted to become a teacher of some sort. Fast-forward to today, and Jamie is working toward merging her two passions: public service and entrepreneurship, in order to create a facility that will help people, specifically women, become their best selves.

After Shanel returned to Detroit from college, she noticed that very few young people were picking up books for leisure. As somone who loves to read, Shanel felt inspired to change that, thus Progressionista was born.
The library-based book club services girls in the Detroit area ages 8-12. At each meeting, the girls get to interact with a professional woman from Detroit that works in an industry that correlates to the topic of the book they’re reading. Since the beginning, Shanel has been able to introduce her book club members to over 50 women-professionals from various industries, and has donated 700+ books for girls to keep.
