Welcome to Episode Four of Y6 of The Academy of Esports podcast!
I’m your host, James O’Hagan. Thank you for joining me as I welcome a giant of the medical device field who is now using decades of experience— and his own personal journey— to build bold, collaborative mental health roadmaps within responsible, therapeutic video game environments in his new venture with Mike Wilson.
It’s an honor to speak with Ryan Douglas, co-founder & co-chairman of DeepWellDTx.
Ryan takes us on a journey that goes far beyond the “one and done” attitude of many developers. His is a manifesto rooted in science, fed by sincerity and best practices, and allowed an ever-evolving timeline that strives not to be the first across a short-term finish line but rather the best at serving the long-term individual needs of human beings of all ages.
It’s quite a ride.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy a conversation that will likely redefine the way you look at video games and mental health.

Welcome to Episode Three of Y6 of The Academy of Esports podcast!
I’m your host, James O’Hagan. Thank you for joining me as I welcome a friend, a mentor, and a global legend in esports and education— Mark “Garvey” Candella, former founder & director of Twitch Student and current Chief Business & Strategy Officer of AcadArena.
Garvey joined me from his home base in the Philippines to share a journey that has taken him from a challenging start on the streets of Brooklyn to becoming one of the most well-known and respected figures in esports education and community-building.
Just one example of a chapter along the way: his work ethic as a young UPS driver led him to a spot at power lunches over the famous red sauce of Forlinis in Manhattan– delivering financial prowess through osmosis as a side order– and established him as a founding innovator of day trading.
Without question, this is and will remain one of my favorite podcast conversations of all-time. No summary could do justice to the wisdom shared, how much I learned about someone I thought I already knew, and how grateful I am to Garvey for his openness.
Sit back, relax, and listen to a story that will captivate you, educate you, and inspire you.

Welcome to Episode Two of YEAR SIX of The Academy of Esports podcast!
I’m your host, James O’Hagan. Thank you for joining me as I welcome a good friend from across the sea, Stuart Dempsey, the Founder and CEO of GamerFest Dublin, Ireland’s largest esports event.
In the aftermath of Brexit, Ireland was elevated to the role of premier English-speaking nation in the European Union. The impact of this on esports opportunities is massive. To speak to this– and offer two decades of marketing and branding experience to our audience– is a longtime friend of The Academy of Esports, Stuart Dempsey.
Since establishing GamerFest in 2017, Stuart’s event has gone from strength to strength with 5,000 visitors expected for GamerFest Summer at the end of May and up to 10,000 visitors in the next 18 months. That isn’t surprising when you consider what he brought to the table– a 20-year career in B2B and B2C marketing, a Master’s Degree in Marketing Practices from Galway University, and a dance card of successful relationships with some of Ireland’s biggest companies (recently expanded to include the Irish postal system!).
Join us for this fascinating conversation. We’re confident that you’ll walk away with a fresh take on Irish esports, a load of great advice about esports partnerships, and a strong desire to buy a ticket to GamerFest Dublin!

Welcome to PART TWO of Episode One of YEAR SIX of The Academy of Esports podcast!
I’m your host, James O'Hagan. Thank you for joining me as I welcome back my friend, Amir Satvat, the global head of startup operations at Amazon Web Services.
Before stepping into their current role, Amir experience included chapters as a principal publishing producer and key positions in business development and strategy at Amazon Games. They also served as COO for AWS' Inside Sales and Demand Generation Businesses, while spending over a decade in tech and healthcare sectors, working on strategy, operations, and business development. Amir's academic achievements include an MBA and a Master's in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MPA in Public Policy from New York University. Their professional journey is a perfect example of one of Amir’s career advice tenets: think laterally within a company to gain skills you need for your dream job.
As a dedicated gamer, Amir has played over 2,200 titles, cherishing series like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Monkey Island, and The Witcher. Their love for gaming began with Asteroids on the Atari 2600. Their passion for the industry doesn’t end there– Amir runs a thriving LinkedIn community of over 33,000 video game followers (and growing daily!), with many working in games.
Amir also loves opera, having created his first at age 14. With that in mind, we invited a surprise guest– Josh Shaw, Founding Artistic Director and CEO of Pacific Opera Project– whose blend of video game characters and operas is selling out stages wherever it goes.
Named as one of Musical America’s Top 30 Innovators in Classical Music, Josh Shaw is the Founding Artistic Director and CEO of Pacific Opera Project (POP), which has been described as "L.A.'s most exciting new opera company." Over the past twelve seasons, Mr. Shaw has directed over 50 productions at POP, including The Rake’s Progress, Ariadne auf Naxos, La Calisto, Tosca: A Moving Production; and La Boheme: AKA “The Hipsters”. A frequent librettist for English updates, his Star Trek-inspired Abduction from the Seraglio and Nintendo-inspired Magic Flute (AKA #SuperFlute) have gained national attention and have been produced at multiple companies, shattering attendance records.
Enjoy, consider hitting “Subscribe,” and please make time to play in some way this week!

Hello and welcome to the first episode of the sixth year of The Academy of Esports podcast!
I’m your host, James O’Hagan, the Vice-President of Education and Innovation at LeagueSpot, and an educator for over two decades. Thank you for joining us for Part One of what is surely going to be one of my favorite conversations in this podcast’s history, as the subject is a dear friend and source of constant joy to all who know them.
Amir Satvat is the global head of startup operations at Amazon Web Services. Prior to this, they served as principal publishing producer and, prior to that, both business development and strategy lead at Amazon Games. Going back even further, they served as COO for AWS’ Inside Sales and Demand Generation Businesses and spent over a decade in the tech and healthcare sectors in a variety of roles across strategy, operations, and business development. Amir earned their MBA and Master’s in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and his MPA in Public Policy from New York University.
While amassing such an impressive list of accomplishments, Amir always had one goal in mind since childhood: work in gaming. We challenge you to find a more dedicated lifelong gamer! Amir has played over 2,200 titles in their life and their favorite video games series include Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Monkey Island, and The Witcher. (The first game they ever played was Asteroids on the Atari 2600!)
It took 15 years in the professional world to achieve their dream role at age 37. Today, the advice they learned– as well as the respect they have earned– make Amir one of the most influential voices in the space. Today, in addition to their “day job,” Amir operates one of the most important video games LinkedIn communities on earth with nearly 32,000 followers, more than half of whom work in the games industry.
It is a responsibility they take seriously. When the slew of job cuts hit gaming, Amir bundled a lifetime of professional experiences and connections into one extraordinary project:
The Games Jobs Workbook. It is a resource that has now been viewed over 500,000 times since March, connected dozens upon dozens of job seekers with new careers, and launched a virtual mentorship program that is unprecedented in this space.
Google Docs: lnkd.in/etkUuecj
Dropbox: lnkd.in/eGJasnNR
I cannot urge you strongly enough to follow Amir’s LinkedIn page for non-stop wisdom like this:
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/mailbag-your-ama-questions-from-march-2023-amir-satvat/?trackingId=thAEPQqnKOWZk3XIF60%2Bzg%3D%3D
In this first installment, we dive into career advice, actionable plans for job seekers in gaming, and the importance of self-care in the midst of an industry that keeps moving 24/7.
The content has such value for those of you in and beyond the gaming industry– but more than that, Amir’s is the face, the voice, the words you didn’t even realize you needed when you woke up this morning. You’re witnessing pure sincerity and kindness in action.
Join us next week for Part Two with Amir when– in an Academy of Esports first– we add OPERA to the mix!
Enjoy, consider hitting “Subscribe,” and please make time to play in some way this week!

In this episode, we dive into Will's passion for the Fighting Game Community (FGC), his quest to build an amazing experience in virtual and physical spaces, what gaming has meant for his own mental health, and his love for his brother and connection they made through Sonic the Hedgehog.

Dr. William Watson, Associate Professor of Learning Design and Technology, and Director of Purdue Center for Serious Games and Learning in Virtual Environments focuses his work around the idea that the system of education is antiquated and designed to meet entirely different societal needs than currently exist. Like any tweaks, educational video games are not themselves enough to solve the problems facing education today. Rather, Dr. Watson believes we need a new system of education that is focused on actual learning rather than driven by time and the comparison and sorting of learners, a personalized approach to learning.

As the Associate Director of Business Development at Purdue University, Chris Bishop is tasked with bringing events and initiatives to Purdue that would benefit past, current, and future Boilermakers. Three years ago, Chris and I started a conversation that morphed from "how to get esports onto Purdue's campus," into "we have all these amazing people doing work to support the gaming space on campus right now, and we need to showcase this!" On April 8-9, on the Purdue Campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, the culmination of these conversations will showcase the ecoverse around gaming and esports at the inaugural "Games Make a Difference" Symposium.
This podcast episode is a first dedicated to the speakers at the conference to provide further depth and insights that can sometimes be lost in symposium conversations.

Alex McNeil is a private admissions consultant and one of the moderators of Reddit's r/ApplyingToCollege community, the largest student community in the world dedicated to college admissions. He has been working in college preparation and admissions in various capacities for almost five years — first starting a test prep company in the San Francisco Area in 2017 that was sold in 2019, then working with colleges to build and evaluate their esports programs, and then back into college admissions in late 2020 as the Founder of McNeil Admissions.
In this conversation, Alex and I discuss the challenges and changes in colleges, and what to look for when considering an esports scholarship to an institution of higher learning.

Marcus Howard returns to the podcast to discuss his new project "Innovate: Gaming & Esports." This project is a culmination of his work to bring a heightened level of awareness to the depth of the esports industry beyond the games, and to give light to those doing the work not always seen on big stages. As an almanac, this project also hopes to open the eyes to everyone, students in particular, that the esports industry is growing in new ways not thought of in the recent past.

While not a perfect analogy, when you strip away the geopolitical feud between the USSR and the USA, the potential infinite possibilities of space creates an interesting mindset. In American pop culture, the space race morphs into Star Trek where society had to come together for a greater purpose. With esports, we see that need, now more than ever. We see there is not one way to create an esports experience. We see the potential of infinite possibilities for all to benefit from esports in ways that are unique to the individual.

Dr. Tore Olsson is a professor of history at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. He took up playing the game Red Dead Redemption 2 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and quickly saw an undercurrent of themes related to the late 19th and early 20th century in the game. And she shares key insights from her book "A Parent's Guide to Video Games: The essential guide to understanding how video games impact your child's physical, social, and psychological well-being."

In this far ranging interview, Kevin Mitchell, Founder of the College Esports Expo (CEX)/Emerson College Professor/National Amusements Director of Business Development and Strategic Intelligence and I get into an interview really unlike most others I have done. Working as a music industry label rep in the late 80s and early 90s, Kevin connects the rise of Hip Hop Culture, and the parallels seen in the current rise of Esports. Touching on the shifting trends in media consumption, the connections of esports into the world of education, and the global growth of CEX, this is not an episode to be missed. At the core, it all comes back to the opportunities we are helping to develop in scholastic esports for our Scholar Gamers.

Grandmaster Chess Players may burn 6000 calories in a day during tournaments, but does that translate over to esports? Is burning 6000 calories in a day a good thing? Over the past two plus years, The Academy of Esports Podcast has focused on delivering information and ideas that are timely and intellectually honest. But, as esports has grown, and with more and more people stepping into the space, there may be instances where bits of information and data are shared that do not tell the full story. This is an example of one of these instances.

The book "Moral Combat: Why the War on Violent Video Games Is Wrong" is one that provided clear and concise information about the history of flawed and agenda driven research against video games. This is a book that I encourage any educator who wants to become involved in esports to read and know backwards and forwards. It provides data and reasoning for when we are surely asked "don't violent video games make violent kids?" Published in 2017, the view on video games has changed dramatically. Dr. Chris Ferguson, Professor of Psychology at Stetson University, and one of the authors, was so kind to give his time to answer questions related to the book and discuss the changing landscape around the perceptions of video games in our society.

For those who have listened regularly to the podcast, rugby comes up quite a bit. There are many surprising similarities between rugby and esports culture. Schools looking to implement esports may be wondering how to implement a health and wellness program as part of esports. Rugby is a great way to do that! Phil Klevorick, Founder of The Rugby Foundation, shares some of his insights in how "touch rugby" is being used to introduce rugby to children in the Las Vegas area. We also get into the broader global rugby culture and how it can bind together international organizations stepping into esports.

Dr. Kristy Custer and Mike Russell are educators in Maize, Kansas. Complete High School Maize is an alternative high school, and home to one of the older high school esports programs in the United States. Starting in 2016, Mr. Russell has lead his school esports team. Dr. Custer, while not a gamer, saw the value of esports to connect her students into the social fabric of her schools. Dr. Custer and Mr. Russell came together to create FREE curriculum for an esports course in their school -- Gaming Concepts. While the curriculum stands as a class all its own, you can also use and remix the course lessons as needed. Gaming Concepts teaches college- and career-ready skills and social-emotional learning -- all through the lens of video games and Esports! By harnessing students’ passion for games and bringing it into the classroom, Gaming Concepts improves academic performance and attendance, all while equipping high school students with the life skills they will need to ace college and beyond.

With this week’s news of Riot’s “North America Community Competition Guidelines,” educators are stepping forward and locking arms in defense of the new and evolving ecosystem of esports in high schools and the children who inhabit it. In order to correct this action, we ask of Riot Games the following: 1. Revision of the North America Community Competition Guidelines (Last Updated: March 9, 2020) by removing Item 9, and working through the RSAA to create new separate Item 9 guidelines for college and high school groups. 2. Representation on the Riot Scholastic Association of America (RSAA) Board of Advisors via a diverse group of high school esports leaders (there are currently zero seats allocated). 3. Creation of pathways for high school esports associations to gain sanctioning to conduct events using Riot Games intellectual property, games and the terms: Varsity, Season, Championship, Post-Season, League, or Playoffs. 4. A pledge to never receive equity or direct funding from another for-profit association or company arranging, operating or hosting high school esports events. Should there be any previous, or future, equity or funding received from any such companies, it should either be returned, or set aside for grants to high schools working to create, or sustain, esports programs. The high school esports community will not stand idly by, or feel bullied or pushed due to special interests. The high school esports community sets the scholar gamer experience first, shall boldly dare to dream of a great esports experience for our children, will thrive together through mutual respect and care of each other, will collaborate and execute with excellence a meaningful experience for and with our children, and we will stay hungry and humble learning and growing together with, or without, Riot Games.

Latoya Peterson lives at the intersection of emerging technology, video games, television, and music. She is often asked to speak about technology, race, gender, and pop culture. Named one of Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 rising stars in media, she is best known for the award winning blog Racialicious.com - the intersection of race and pop culture. In 2016, she produced a critically acclaimed YouTube series on Girl Gamers. And, in 2018, she published a fantastic article on ESPN's The Undefeated titled "Why aren't more kids going pro in esports?" It was exciting to welcome her onto the podcast to dig into that topic, among others. Her take on questions about diversity and equity may surprise you. And her perspective on creating safer spaces for underrepresented gamers is enlightening. A truly wonderful interview and fresh perspective.

This week on The Academy of Esports, I reflect on the work we have done to bring esports to the city of Racine. We have a fantastic partnership with the local gaming lounge, Not Your Parents' Basement. We have a grant to fund three of our high school teams at NYPB. We have a grant that funded our first team at The Walden School. We are part of a fast growing state association full of dedicated educators with a passion for gaming. We have a gift from the Racine Public Library Foundation to purchase 12 gaming laptops for use in the library. We have one student already on scholarship at Robert Morris University in Chicago, and a new D1 program at Marquette University in Milwaukee. And we have the Milwaukee Bucks NBA2K team just up the road. We are quickly becoming a midwest hub for esports!

The book "Moral Combat" (2017) by Patrick M. Markey, PhD, and Christopher J. Ferguson, PhD, provides excellent information and details refuting the notion that violent video games lead to violence. In this episode, James goes through some of his key take aways from the book. Not mentioned in the podcast is the tremendous number of violent video games sold in Japan, more than anywhere else in the world per person, and yet they have one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

The seventeenth episode of the podcast looks at when school culture and gaming culture do not mesh well. Riot Games, this week, announced sweeping changes to their company culture to address sexism and misogyny. Do schools have a responsibility, when considering what games to include in their esports programs, to examine the publisher's practices? What if the popular game company's public values do not align with school and conference values? Note: I did not address what would be the potential fallout should other gaming companies be found to have similar issues as Riot Games. However, Riot Games has the opportunity to address their own toxic culture, and next steps can be discussed in later episodes should this problem uncover problems at other companies whose games are used in high school esports leagues.
