This is a podcast about navigating life through transitional experiences; from England to abroad, teenhood into adulthood, and personal and professional development, all in this age of constant change. I'm Alix (@a_blanx), your host. I've been a young person's mentor in London and Vancouver for several years now, but a questioner of things for a lot longer, and I'm here to share what I've learned!
Hi Hi! Here's your July episode. This is a VERY personal one...
If you feel a bit lost, are going through change in yourself or are seeking some advice on how to feel better about who you are, this episode is for you.
I've had a decent stint diving into 'Self' lately, relearning who I am now. The end of 2023/first half of 2024 saw me going through a lot of change and uncertainty; in life, moving, relationships, work and visiting back home. I felt overwhelmed and pessimistic. So, after a fair but of personal work, here are my 3 'AHA!" moments that have brought me back to VIBRANCY.
In this episode:
-What being alone has taught me
-The benefits of being alone
-Meeting myself again at 33
-Resurfacing from a low period into optimism
-I started therapy AND coaching...and boy, is it connecting the dots!
-My holistic view on health and self-care
-Acknowledging my boundaries
-A new mantra I now live by (great for any recovering people-pleasers!)
-Shifting my philosophy from thinking ahead (worrying) to being present (feeling)

I AM BACK, as always, in late fashion. This one's a juicy one and deserved some time aging in the barrel.
Here are my reflections on how different–and the same–uprooting life and moving to Canada for a second has been–but this time in my thirties...
For anyone who is thinking of moving abroad, wants to understand what you might learn, is curious about Canada, or who has moved abroad and wants to feel a bit seen, this one's for you. It's like a vlog (with no 'v'), plus 4 major learnings.
In this episode:
-Why I moved countries...again!
-How my low period of 2023 and the world changing informed my decisions
-Expectations vs. reality
-The differences between Vancouver, CAN and London, UK–and there are some!
-Tips for making the most out of a new place
-What 'diversity' and 'culture' means here
-How I feel NOW and. what's next for the rest of 2024
-Becoming more at peace (WIP!) with where I am as a woman who is still questioning what she wants, when everyone else 'seems' to have things figured out...

Intuition. It is SO important. And the older I get, the more I realise this. In the Western world, we aren't taught how to connect with it aka listen to ourselves. So, when I was younger I kinda went around 'thinking' a lot; doing what 'I should' do and what is 'valuable' (in society's terms). I guess I was ruled by the dominant culture and the 'norm' like many of us. BUT, here's what I have been doing for the last decade to LISTEN TO MY INTUITION, connect to myself, and decide what I want for my life! Happy listening.

I hope you feel like you can align with yourself a lot more after this episode.

Hi, folks! So glad to be back. This topic's a little novel for me but still relevant in my Mobile Mentor meanderings, nonetheless. If you're a designer, writer, carpenter, photographer, creator of any kind (digital or otherwise), or just HUMAN, listen to this episode!
It's definitely been a ride watching the fuss around AI grow alongside experimenting with it myself. I approach this episode from a social scientist's POV. Think: if someone was to research how our phone's have changed the way we think and do things since their arrival. This episode is my thinking BEFORE human behaviour shifts all over again thanks to AI. Generative AI, anyway...

URMMMM, WOW. #CannesLions2023, you did good. (Ps. not Cannes Film Festival.) This was my second attendance of the annual festival, and it was MEGA (I first went with work in 2017). This year, I was selected as part of an initiative called Black Out 2023 headed up by Cephas Williams and a partnership between the Cannes Lions festival and The Black British Network. 50 Black creatives got to go on an all-expenses-paid trip funded by Cephas himself, and the likes of Google M&C Saatchi, Tesco, Yahoo, Soho House Group and more in the name of increasing Black creative representation in a traditionally white space. The mission? Get big industry players walking the walk that they promised during BLM in 2020. In this episode:
Hear what Cannes Lions is all about, the antics, and what to expect from it What inspired me the most and what I took from the whole experience My experience of going with other Black creatives The who, what, why of #BlackOut 2023 Some big names spotted Trip highlights and the changes needed STILL... How I'm now moving from this life-changing trip
Why you should listen: This episode is for anyone interested in the creative, marketing, brand, and advertising industry; who wants to know what the heck Cannes Lions is; and anyone keen on understanding the Black experience in this industry and first-hand account on the fight for representation within such a traditionally elitist, mainly white space. Shout out to Cephas Williams and everything he's doing. _______ Wanna chat? Hit me up on IG: @a_blanx. Shoot any emails to mobilementorpodcast@gmail.com. HI HI HI. Welcome back! So I'm just going to say it – I think I'm having another life crisis..? But this time, not quarter-life. I'm 31, feeling in a rut, under a grey cloud, uninspired and less vibrant. Is it my day-to-day, line of work, feeling the shift with peers in different stages, a bigger change in self that needs to be addressed?
With this, I've spent some time solo to listen to my inner voice and uncover what is REALLY stirring. I've also turned to the stories and experiences of others to help find some clarity... Some, in particular, came from this very insightful podcast episode; Mo Gawdat's second conversation with Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO on Happiness. Therefore, this week I unpack those top themes and key 'AHA!' moments. Big thinkers, this episode is for you!! Everyone else – I hope you get your clarity if you're going through anything similar!

HOLLA! Happy 2022 and all that. Sending big love to new and existing listeners. HERE'S TO THE NEW SEASON OF THE MOBILE MENTOR PODCAST: It's been a LOOONGGG time – I've been lapping up my return back to London/UK and living as presently as possible in pandemic times. Apologies for the delay in getting back to it (I vouch to be more consistent now that I've figured out a routine). ALSO, there's a brand-new episode format: every two weeks I'll be sharing a few of the most prevailing, niggling and personal experiences and situations that arise in life, attempting to make sense of them and figure things out in real-time with you. Also, expect the regular Knowledge Bomb section to round off each release; a learning or nugget I've come across that helped me and might help you – a bit like my Guru Moments IGTVs (if you know, you know). Ever thought of relocating but want to hear what it's like? Ever moved then gone elsewhere to get closer to where/who you want to be? After two years in Canada, one pandemic, (lots of visa paperwork), new career experiences, a great relationship, and mega life lessons, I'm heading back to the motherland. In an open and personal episode, I share what's driving me to this change and why BC didn't feel like the place to stay permanently for now. So grateful for this chapter! (If I've learnt anything, it's that everything in life is temporary, and I have to honour what arises.) Everyone's "adulting" all of a sudden and I'm here like... Since the pandemic, I've been reflecting a lot and reassessing what I want moving forward (as I'm sure many of you have). And since hitting "the big three-oh" (whatever that means), I thought it was a great time to have an open, vulnerable, and honest conversation with you about where I'm at in life... What a time to be alive. It's been a whole year of the pandemic... I'm sure many of us have learned a lot about ourselves and been through a BUNCH of emotional phases. Here I share the main themes that have surfaced for me: my relationship with work, how I strive for perfection, my constant need to be problem-solving or 'doing' (plus what influences our programming on a societal level). With this, I reflect on how I can start to make the ride of life a bit easier, ending on some questions we could all ask ourselves! Hope you're all staying well. Let's face it—finding our worth in a world full of mixed messages, hierarchies, algorithms, speed, and lots of noise (from parents, peers, and institutions) is FRIGGIN' hard. Heck, it's been a journey since my teens and will never cease. So, to help you discover yours and cultivate more ways self-care can work for you at the prime age of 30, I've put together 5 key themes I WISH I'D KNOWN SOONER!!! This journey can be tumultuous. We all have different demands and expectations placed on us and face different societal pressures, so let's try to be understanding and patient with ourselves and others. ++++++++++++++++ CONTENTS: 1-Why comparison is so illogical + some AHA! moments to stop us doing it! 2-Accepting who we aren't/aren't (it really lifts a load off!) 3-VIBE CHECK: How the company we keep hugely affects us 4-Acknowledging what keeps us shining brightly (making self-care work for us) 5-Owning our uniqueness 6-Ways to keep on top of self-education + parting tips!

Although the context and events of the year are different, the learnings I took from 2019 into 2020 still ring true. HI AGAIN! Here, I share my story on how I moved from higher education in architecture to a copywriter at a global brand (part 1), and the 4 key ingredients I think helped get me there (part 2). It was no easy feat and a VERY stressful, confusing time throughout early adulthood, but after 10ish years, I've finally found a job area that stimulates me (the 'what' and 'where'), allows me to utilise MY skills and talents (the 'how'), and solidifies my purpose (the 'why'). Quick note: Environments/companies/industry culture can really dictate our work life experiences, so consider that throughout your journey—it's not just on you. There are also many societal barriers working against different folk. This is solely my lived experience and not at all meant to be your truth. To skip straight to the 4 tools, go to: 20mins(ish) in. _______ Hope you're doing well. It''s a hard time to establish or change careers. It's also a RUDDY hard, emotional year so don't overburden yourself! Thanks for listening

Hiiii! I hope you're staying safe, sane, and well. This episode is about my personal experiences and understanding of, bisexuality. I haven't spoken on this openly before, but after 29 years and further understanding myself in the context of society and the LGBTQ+ community, it was the right time. Listening to other people's stories (on Youtube, podcasts, TV shows & IG) REALLY helped validate my own, so I hope this can do that for you! Also great if you're just a curious cat or working on your allyship. THANKS FOR LISTENING :D

A quote to frame this episode; ‘Your Brain and Culture Are Aspiring Against You.’ —Thinking Wrong (book). Here I offer a SUPER fun, short, and insightful exercise to help illuminate how you think and what to do with what you learn. You'll be surprised... Nowadays it's crucial for EVERYONE to look inward at how they're programmed and make changes...

Social media, the media at large, and our everyday conversations centre around racism, anti-racism, and the Black Lives Matter movement right now. With this, I'm seeing some common responses and behaviours arising that are problematic—here I unpack WHY. My hope is to help people (white friends and those with more privilege), to identify blind spots and ignorance, and work towards better understanding what's needed. There’s a tool at the end to help everyone become an ally, and shift our default way of thinking into being anti-racist. -------- My last podcast may also be insightful: ’Being Biracial, Covert Racism & Becoming Anti-Racist’: https://anchor.fm/themobilementor/episodes/Being-Biracial--Covert-Racism--Becoming-Anti-Racist-eetrjo/a-a2c94qp

This is a pretty personal episode... I wanted to provide some insight into being a person of colour in the world today. At first, I didn't feel I was 'black enough' to share my experiences with racism, but I'm hoping it can be a space of learning and help those who are unaware of racial biases, injustice or benefit from white privilege, to know what to detect. This is such a heavy time; it's been heartbreaking and exhausting processing events in the news and what's surfaced personally for me—straddling my privilege and being half black. So I wanted to share some of it...
__________
It's not enough to stay silent and 'accept' what is. We have to be actively ANTI-RACIST. And it starts by looking at ourselves and then acting with greater awareness. (It's not just the job of people of colour.) Let's have the hard conversations about race, talk to people who live through it, share what we know and learn, and get used to being uncomfortable. Because it will be. Thanks so much for being here—please share this episode with ANYONE who needs to hear it. BIG love—especially to my BIPOC friends.

Covert racism= not openly acknowledged or displayed, subtle
BIPOC= Black, Indigenous, People of Colour
Biracial= being of two racial groups

NB. I discuss some physical aspects of parenting and punishment, so if this is triggering for you please come back another time :). Hiiii, ALL! I believe that it's pretty key to learn about each other in order to have richer relationships, be more sensitive to different experiences, and become more inclusive. So, here's a step towards that! 🙏 Due to 234523 days in self-isolation and counting, I've been introspecting A LOT. Part of this has been looking at what I believe in the context of my upbringing; I'm biracial and bicultural growing up with a white, English mum, and a black, African dad in the UK. This is only part of my story, but it has helped me grasp WHO I want (and don't want) to be in the world today. I chat: gender roles, financial responsibilities, cultural traditions, and differing parenting styles (pre-divorce era FYI). Hi all! Hope you're taking care of yourselves and loved ones in these uncertain times. With more time to slow down and reflect during this unprecedented pandemic, I've been putting my creative energy into a new project, Stories of Isolation. My experience of #selfisolation is different to yours, different to my neighbours, which is different to the family's abroad... So instead of separating us more, these differences could actually bring us closer together (if we share them to educate one another and grow our worldly compassion).

This is a SUPER interesting and relevant topic for ANYONE, AND for the world (that's super in need of more kindness) right now! Many of us don't think about how we behave and communicate with others day-to-day. This could cause or add to, difficulties for those who are different to us, who have less privilege, or who identify as being in a minority group. In this episode, we cover some challenges that women of colour, and immigrants face integrating into Canada and the workplace. These are wide-stretching issues, but the personal experiences are from those in Canada. A lighter more inclusive society starts with a conversation (and with awareness of self and others)! 🙏🙏🙏🙏THANKS FOR COMING BY! ______ Credit/HUGE thanks to Daniela Pichardo who held the important workshop mentioned, and offered some great resources below. Whether a friend has lied, a loved one has been deceitful, or someone new isn't who they said they were, this practical guide will help you handle it! Introducing a different, bitesize podcast format on what to do if someone breaks your trust. This turn of events can be an emotional rollercoaster and muddy our thinking. We're likely to be more reactive in the heat of the moment or worse-want to hurt the other person back, but this may be counterintuitive to moving forward together. And then there's the other person; they're likely to be more defensive, victimize themselves or come across aloof-even more of a mindf*ck... Today, I share a personal experience and how (with a year's hindsight on my side), I was able to digest and learn from it, in 4 key stages. __________________ Liked this episode? When is it right to take it to the next level with someone you're dating? When does it feel okay for YOU to sleep with someone new? This is another AMAZING and ENLIGHTENING episode where all of YOU share your ideas, experiences and unique points-of-view! It's so crazy and fab how we all approach this differently, and most of the time, our thoughts are left unsaid. We can learn lots from speaking openly about sex and our values, to discover new ways that could work for us. 💭 In here, we've got those who prefer to wait, those with a five-date-rule, those who lay their cards out on the table on the first meet, and those who share how their mindset towards sex shifts when they're in different countries and cultures. At the end, I share the main learnings, and leave YOU to decide if you might evolve your approach to intimacy. ______ THANKS ONCE AGAIN, TO EVERYONE WHO GOT INVOLVED and your patience with my messages! You've made season 2 much more varied, boosted listenership, and helped me learn A TON!!

IF YOU'VE EVER FELT NOT GOOD ENOUGH, THAT YOU'RE CONSTANTLY COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS OR TRYING TO CHANGE TO FIT IN - STOP AND LISTEN TO THIS. When writing this title, I was deciding between the words 'overcoming, 'conquering,' and 'battling' the pressures of modern life but none of them quite fit... The reason for choosing 'getting through,' was because overall, it's an ongoing process – society changes quicker than your knickers, and the approaches and tools we can use to keep up, are continuously arising too. So here are mine... ____ In this episode, I outline three major influences that shape our upbringing, beliefs of the world and our decisions towards adulthood, including the media, our parents and social institutions. Pulling on my own troubled transition from teens to twenties, I share how I learnt to establish my own value outside of the one prescribed of me by Western society. I came to realize that I was trying to fit in, and abide by, the more favoured human qualities and achievements, such as extroversion, thinness, higher academic grades versus other talents, working until it hurts, obedience, and pursuing only a few career paths. THERE IS NO ONE TRUTH, AND EVERY INDIVIDUAL HAS HUGE VALUE TO OFFER OUTSIDE OF THESE. ____ There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, but with new awareness and by spending time with ourselves, we can rewire our thinking to become happier again! ____ I HOPE YOU GET HEAPS OF VALUE FROM THIS. If you have any more ideas or thoughts of your own, DM me on IG @a_blanx – I read them all! THE BIG 4 LETTER WORD gets its moment! What is Love? (baby don't hurt me...). Is Love a feeling, a verb, a noun? Is it organic or does it require effort? How does Love differ between romantic and non-romantic relationships? Lucy Gutierrez (host of The L Podcast) and I delve into this fascinating subject pulling on pivotal experiences, such as a big break-up and how persistency is NOT the key to success, not having a father figure around, and the importance of understanding how you RECEIVE and GIVE Love across your various relationships. After talking on commom quotes on Love, including 'Trust is the key,' 'Communication is the key,' Lucy leaves us with this gem- 'Love is a choice and an action.' TUNE IN TO LEARN WHY!! SHE IS SO WISE AND ELOQUENT (but sadly not single - she got back with her ex just before recording this August episode!.#FilmStory). You guys asked for this one! Anxiety comes in various forms and is triggered by a range of things rooted in the beliefs of an individual. This episode covers info and insight about, what appears to be, a modern phenomenon; what is anxiety? What are the symptoms? How can I manage it or get rid of it? I explore all of these based on my own experiences related to work, the future, relationships (romantic and non-romantic) and health, as well as drawing on some informative sources. There's also some great mental health accounts to follow for encouragement & tips, PLUS how one London school is going above and beyond to boost the mental health of children! There's dealing with emotions (which is friggin' hard enough) and then there's dealing with TWO sets of emotions in a relationship! No one teaches us how to navigate the road-bumps or sticky situations when dating. IT'S A LOT but it can be simplified with some awareness and pausing before a reaction. This episode centres around respecting your own feelings, whilst appreciating the needs of the other. I open up about my own experiences as well as those of friends; about going back to ex, vulnerability, sexual health conversations and break-ups. ___________ If you have any questions about relationships, handling emotions or experiences of your own, message me on IG @a_blanx. The age old quest of purpose x getting money continues to rear its head...(it definitely does for me, anyway!). In this age of endless choice, pressure, and influences coming from every direction, anxiety around finding a career is at an all-time high! Years of navigating what I wanted to do in the creative industries and feeling scrambled during my twenties, made me realize that the answer lied between: WHO I wanted TO BE, HOW I OPERATED as an individual, and what I STAND FOR. I talk about this odd taboo surrounding being alone, as well as how lone time is beneficial for growth and productivity. PLUS, there are some tips on how to be alone for those who find it uncomfortable or don't always know what to do with themselves... Netflix isn't always the answer (...but sometimes it is). A delve into how a young person views the world today... In this episode, I chat with my half sister, Indy, 17, who was born in Ghana and raised in England. We unpack how a dual-culture has shaped her into who she has become, the big pressures facing the younger generation (dubbed Gen Z) today, who inspires her and what she's most looking forward to in the future. Indy is a role model and someone I admire HUGELY. She is bright, conscientious, motivated, dedicated and diplomatic, as well as kind and giving. How DOES she manage it all?!? Joining me this week is a fellow Brightonian and school friend - the lovely, free-spirited, curious and ever-effervescent, Madeleine Sava. Maddy has been in Vancouver, Canada, for nearly 2 years at the time of recording, and I've been here just a few weeks! She at 26-years-old, me at 28, both left our UK lives for different reasons, and have learnt HEAPS about the process and ourselves along the way. Sharing practical tips on establishing a new home, the power of hindsight, our life outlooks, and links to a former, more daunting move to Australia in 2014, this episode provides a dual perspective. I hope it helps you to see life as an adventure, provides comfort if you too are considering walking into 'the unknown', and highlights that moving countries is something EVERYONE can do with a little 'help from our friends' / podcast insight! ____ Check the love and light of my life out on IG: @madeleinesava (she creates AMAZINGLY witty art), and as per, share your thoughts/experiences with me on @a_blanx! We learn about the human behind the term 'influencer.' The influencer industry is going through a bit of reputation crisis with many skeptical of its morality and authenticity. However, with every career there's conflict between earning a living, doing what you love and what it contributes to the world... Let's face it, all humans are contradictions! This week I chat with my sister, Liv Blankson @livblankson, who's been a 'Content Creator' (preferred title) for several years now. We chat about the effects of growing up so close to social media, her experience of forming and maintaining friendships, and how she navigates this always-on lifestyle on a personal, moral and emotional level. Setbacks, fear and asking for help are all part of the journey towards getting what you really want... and I learnt this by watching the Netflix series, Chef's Table when seeking some answers in my own life... I'm currently on a quest to move to Canada, whilst identifying the environments, companies and types of work I'm going to invest in, that will help me flourish as a person (and a professional). After a few job rejections, I decided to sit back and take stock of the bigger picture... What did I really want and how was this process nudging me towards it? This episode contains the secret to happiness...NAAAAAT! We just need a simple mindset shift... You may have heard 'the pursuit of happiness' thrown around (or just seen the film with Will Smith), BUT in truth 'the HAPPINESS of PURSUIT' is how we should be thinking... Happiness is a state that can be more easily attained if we accept that it's not the end-goal but the ride. I explain it better on the podcast, so tune in!! Plus there's a few tools, ingredients and spices thrown in on how to cultivate more of it (take it with a pinch of salt though - there's no one-size-fits-all recipe). Life with meaning is a constant search of the human condition... well it is for those in their twenties/thirties today. This is due to the pivotal point in society we were born into. It's a period of structural change, new and renewed human rights, vast environmental pressures weighing in on our near future, increased individualism, the effects of tech, and conflict with the former generation's value system. With this comes a lot of uncertainty, questioning and people trying to navigate where to put their time and effort...there's SIMPLY TOO MUCH TO DEAL WITH! On chatting with mum, a cute 61 year-old Yorkshire lass, this episode highlights generational differences, what could contribute to a meaningful life, and why a tumbleweed rolled through our living room when we recorded... but seriously, BIG love for my mum! 'Giving' can provide a sense of purpose, fulfillment and a sense of connectedness to something bigger, but there can also be drawbacks... In this episode I discuss 3 scenarios where I gave my time and energy, and how they affected me. In association with brandmindbody.blogspot.com - my passion project of a few years. Follow @a_blanx on Instagram & Twitter for regular bites and IGTV episodes. WELCOME! * shimmies *
