Today on the Career Clarity Show, we are discussing a topic that so many of us can identify and resonate with - burnout. Many times, burnout almost becomes synonymous with the experience of doing work. It is simply what work is. We begin to think that work isn't supposed to be fun, that it's supposed to be hard work with a furrowed brow or you just put your shoulder down and plow through.
But for so many Career Clarity seekers out there, this is a kind of a reality for work that we're unwilling to accept as the forever truth. Feeling burnout does not lead to fulfillment, it does not lead to sustainability. So if you are feeling like you might be sliding into a period of burnout, or maybe you are definitely in the thick of burnout. You’re likely wondering “How do I get out of this? How do I recover? What do I do? How do I possibly summon up any more energy? Because I feel like I'm so exhausted and drained already.” This episode of the podcast is going to be a fabulous resource for you.
Kim Irving is a burnout expert joining us to share all things about sustainable success. She is an executive success coach helping high achieving women permanently end overwhelm and burnout without sacrificing their success so they can create their most intentional, meaningful life, personally and professionally. A common topic that so many people have when they're going through a career transition is around “How do I tell my story?” For so many people who are wanting to do something new and something different, they have been thinking, “I don't know what I want to do, but it's not this.” We can often feel trapped by our past experiences, and specifically our past professional work experiences. That can make it feel difficult to tell the story of who we are beyond the job titles we've most recently had.

One topic that we have not talked about often, maybe ever, on the Career Clarity Show is navigating, trying to get into or get out of the government sector of jobs. Now, this is an area that is near and dear to my heart, because I spent the first part of my career and launched this business back when I was living and working in the Washington DC area. And when you are living in that part of the country in the United States you are going to meet lots of people who are federal employees. Then again when I moved out to Colorado, I found that I was still meeting lots of folks who are working in local and state government in different capacities, and some who are wanting out. And other people who are really wanting to feel like they were having a deeper impact in their careers, but who are currently in the private sector, who were looking for ways in.
Navigating your way into or out of government as an employment source is tricky. It does not look like any of the things that you have learned if you have been exclusively job searching in the private sector. Or if you have been in government for your entire career, making the pivot back to civilian life is going to look really different in terms of how you talk about yourself, how you position yourself and what activities you do.
I am so excited to have Elyse Levine, host of the Career Switch Podcast, to help me dig into all of this information. On this episode of the Career Clarity Show, we are taking a a different direction than what you might hear when you listen to traditional career advice. So often, the people who rise to fame in the coaching world will be people who are peddling advice like “Just push through. No matter what, you can do it”. And while there are probably nuggets of truth in those pieces of advice, it can perpetuate oppressive and micro aggressive advice when so often in our situations in our lives, what we really need is for someone to truly see our circumstances and our situation.
This is especially true if you belong to an underrepresented group that's been historically excluded. Being aware of systems of oppression that affect you may not be as visible to folks who don't belong to the same identities in the same circumstances that you do. Chyrsta Berry, speaker and authors, is here to share some refreshing career advice. We are going to talk about how to believe in yourself. Not in spite of your circumstances, but considering your circumstances and who you are, and how that creates a unique situation that you can still thrive from.

Leadership and career advancement for women - a topic that does not get enough attention. These are topics where there are so many resources out there in the universe. But they all come from what I lovingly call the pale, stale male perspective. While it can be billed as tried and true to feel relevant, helpful, or equity and justice centric, so many miss the mark.
So the conversation we are having on the Career Clarity Show is about what's changed, what's different, and how to think about leadership and career progression and development through the lens of the uniqueness of not necessarily falling into the pale, stale male category. Welcome back to the Career Clarity Show! We are talking about a topic that in the 100 plus episodes of the show we have never covered before: Parental Leave.
Because when we talk about career clarity and finding a path that feels like it truly fits you, one of the biggest pieces of that is the life that you want to have. It's not just about the job you're doing, or the responsibilities that you have on your job description. It's about how your work enables you to live the life that you want to live. And for many of us that life includes a family.
So I am so excited for us to talk about the topic of parenthood, parental leave, and making work work for you. Dr. Amy Beacom and Sue Campbell, authors of The Parental Leave Playbook, are here to share their expertise.

Today on the Career Clarity Show, we're talking about one of the biggest factors that can go into dissatisfaction with your job and with your workplace - organizational culture. If you have worked in any sort of work environment, you know what a difference the energy of the organization makes, the values of the organization makes. And you know what an incredible difference there is between a healthy happy culture where you feel like you can thrive and do great work, and maybe not so healthy and happy culture where you don't feel like you have psychological safety or can bring your best stuff to the office or to the workplace.
Authors Chris Edmonds and Mark Babbitt are here to talk about what the elements are that go into culture, why culture matters, how to be intentional, how to think about it, and perhaps even how to screen it from afar. Their book Good Comes First is available now and shares similar insight into maring career discernment decisions and finding a great place to land and build a career.

On today's episode of the Career Clarity Show, we are talking about one of the foundational principles to navigating career change and moving towards something that feels like it truly fits you and is aligned with who you are - values. It's the question of “What do you hold dear?”. What do you prioritize when you're faced with a trade off and a decision where one choice honors some things that are important to you and the other choice honors different things that are important to you? How do you make the comparison?
So often, we can feel like we're forced to make some decisions that we have to show up as our professional self versus our personal self. And that each one of them is a shade of who we are. Too often we can't bring our full selves to work.
Our guest Linda Evans is here to dissect how to think about bringing more of your values into the way that you make decisions in your professional life as well as your personal life. On today's episode of the show, we are talking about something that we don’t talk about enough - getting paid what you are worth. Now, when it comes to thinking about career change, it can be really intimidating to think about what you should be making in your next job. Usually, for most career changers, you're moving into an area where you have a little bit less experience than you would have had if you just carried on through your same corporate ladder, marching up to the next promotion.
When you're making a pivot, it can feel really difficult to know how to position what your experience is worth. For so many of us, there is a huge fear that can pop up that if you make a move into a new industry or a new job function then you’ll have to start back at the bottom of the ladder. If you've ever had any of those worries and fears, I am so excited for you to hear today's episode of the Career Clarity Show. For this episode of the podcast, I want to go in a little bit of a different direction than you may have heard on some of our other episodes. One of the things that is so incredible about so many of the people who come on the Career Clarity Show is that they've always had this ability to navigate career transitions with authority and confidence. I have been realizing more and more that this is not the way that career change goes for all of us.
In fact, there are more times than not when it comes to making a transition, something happens in your life that turns things upside down. So many people don't get to have that beautiful heroic narrative of standing on the mountaintop all by yourself having done it in isolation. We saw evidence of this with how the pandemic affected entire industries, markets, and countries.
So on today’s podcast Kim “Kid” Curry is here to share his story about overcoming things outside of his control. He’ll share ways that each of us can play the hand that we're dealt and find a path forward, even when it's not necessarily on the terms that we would have liked.

One topic that is oftentimes neglected when we're thinking about making a career change is mindset. One of the reasons why mindset can feel tricky to talk about is because so often when we're going through a season of transition and change, what we want are the tactics: What do I need to do? What are the next steps? What's going to get me results?
While the tactics are incredibly important, there is an unspoken piece to the tactics that can dramatically affect their success rate for you. That's the attitude mindset and belief layer that sits on top. You can do the exact same tactics as every other job seeker, but if you aren't feeling good about yourself or believe in what you're doing, you're not bringing positive energy to it.
If you find yourself in a position where you are trying to navigate making a change, and it just doesn't feel like you're getting the traction and results that you're looking for, you are definitely going to want to listen to today's episode. Chelle Johnson joins us to share the power of being in the right state of mind in making your tactics as effective as they possibly can be for you.

We are talking about in this wild world of career change and career discernment, how to make sure that you land within an organization that honors your values, hopefully even aligns with some if not all of your values, and feels good to be in. And If you have ever been on a job search, whether as a part of a career change or not, you know that it can be difficult to land a job within an organization that honors your values and feels good to be in. It can feel really hard to be external to an organization and try to secretly figure out what it's like to be there. You’re likely asking questions like these: What are the individuals like? What is the company culture like? What does management feel like?
There's so many considerations that go into finding a great place to work where you feel like you fit. On today's episode of the Career Clarity Show, I am delighted to bring on expert, Mark Dyson, in all things job search and career where we will be diving deeply into this question of how to find the kind of organization that truly fits who you are, respect to your values, respects and honors your identity and creates a space for you to thrive. Today on the Career Clarity Show, we are talking about how the most unique of circumstances and upside down opportunities can reveal the things that your heart is wanting most for your life. For so many of us, when we're thinking about making a career change, some of the big questions that pop up are really contingent on a secret hope and belief that things are going to turn out perfectly. We hope that it’s all going to unfold exactly as we had hoped in the sort of beautiful storybook, easy peasy start to finish way.
That's not how most stories go. Most people when they are on an expedition of self discovery and exploration will have twists and turns. This is one of the reasons why we use a mountain climbing metaphor in the Career Clarity book to describe a career exploration journey. When we think about what careers should be, what we are told they're supposed to look like when we are kids growing up, we’re told that careers are supposed to be linear. There are all kinds of limiting beliefs and fears and worries that can pop up in our minds from “I shouldn't be negotiating right now because of the economic climate we're in” to “I shouldn't be negotiating because I'm making a career change.”
To debunk and bust all of these internal scripts, I have negotiation expert, Olivia Jaras, who is going to be sharing all about her work her expertise, and how to make sure you are setting yourself up for success.
This episode is for you, if you have been on the prowl for a job, and you want to be prepared for a negotiation situation when it comes up. If you're not on the prowl, yet, but you're thinking about making a transition and want to make sure that you understand how to show other people what you're worth. And if you are in the thick of interviews right now, and you may be receiving an offer imminently, and you want to make sure that you have got exactly what you need in your toolbox to make that offer and the offer negotiation process go in your favor.

Have you ever wondered why finding great jobs can be so challenging?
Job searching certainly isn't easy, and can take a lot of time. However, there's often something going on underneath the surface that can derail or completely sabotage our job search efforts: our attitude.
No, no, I'm not going to start sounding like your grandma and lecture you about having a better attitude... at least not today. Today, we're talking about how powerful our beliefs are about our abilities, and how they can allow you to find success (and, great compensation packages) even in an economy going sideways.
Today's podcast guest is Olivia Gamber, an expert on psychology, mindset, and landing lucrative jobs. We talk about high value mindsets, dismantling self-limiting beliefs, and finding the hidden job market where most of the highest paying roles are. (Hint: it's not on job boards... but if you've spent much time on job boards recently, you probably already knew that.)
This episode is a juicy one that I'm sure you'll get some good nuggets from. (Let me know what they are!)

Adversity supposedly brings out our true colors: it show us who we are when things aren't going perfectly. But so often in times of pressure or stress, it feels easy to default into survival-thinking and to lose sight of the future (and who we want to be). If you feel like you haven't been showing up at your best and want to create an authentic vision of yourself as a leader, you're going to love this.
Career Clarity certified coach Kate Solis Silva (who's also quoted in Career Clarity the book!) comes on The Career Clarity Show podcast today to talk about your identity as a leader, how to explore it, and how to intentionally create it, even in times that are as unpredictable as these.
It's a juicy conversation (and one I didn't realize I needed so much) about who we think we are, who our peers see us as, and who we truly want to become.

It's no understatement to say that people have been feeling far more stress than they were expecting this year. Especially between work unpredictability and changing your life to suit a pandemic, the last few months have been rough.
It's becoming clear that this lack of "normal" is actually the new "normal," at least for a while. And that means we need to equip ourselves with the tools to manage the stress (and distress) that's become a hallmark of this unexpected year.
That's why I'm SO glad to be able to share this episode of The Career Clarity Show podcast with you. We invited stress reduction and management expert Carlee Myers to share about her innovative process to make life more do-able, no matter your circumstances.
Carlee's mission to master stress reduction for herself and share it with others comes from a shocking (and scary) beginning, and is an incredible story to hear. In our interview, Carlee shares about creative stress reduction: what it means, what it could look like for you, and why you need it now more than ever. (I've been pondering creative stress reduction in my own life ever since our conversation, and am excited to figure out how to better implement it in my own life!) The podcast gives you working definitions of stress and suffering you can use to navigate the ups and downs of your life with more ease and elegance.

If you've ever worked in a job where you didn't quite feel like you fit, today's episode of the podcast is for you. Many people struggle in jobs that look great on paper but don't feel great in person, and wonder why things don't feel natural or satisfying. Performance strategist Laura Garnett has a theory, and she's written about it in her two books: it's that you might be operating outside your personal Zone of Genius.
If you're curious to understand how you can identify and track your zone of genius, tune into this episode. We talk about how Laura's "dream job" at Google ended up being out of alignment with her genius zone, how to properly value your gifting, and how to bring more of yourself to the workplace — and, what to do if your workplace doesn't fully love you back. It's a juicy episode about how you can use your gifts to lead, and I hope you'll take as much out of it as I did.

When working with capable, high achieving folks on making a bold career transition, there's a common stalling out point that pops up. It's the tension between ambition — the desire to keep pushing, hustling, and growing — and rest. So many of us get to the top of our industry, organization, or game by constantly achieving... but it also leads to burnout, exhaustion, adrenal fatigue, and resentment. The thing we love (and get energy from) can also become the cause of our plateaus or roadblocks.
It can then feel like a chicken-or-the-egg trap: I don't have time for rest because I can't rest if I'm going to achieve my goals; but if I don't rest, I'm going to burnout or become less productive and slow down. When we help people create careers they love here at Career Clarity, we want it to be on their own terms in order to be sustainable and healthy. And those terms almost always need to include more time for rest and active recovery.
On this episode of the podcast, I talk about the different kinds of limitations or boundaries on your life, setting specific goals, and defining how to sustainably "thrive" instead of just survive. You can still keep kicking ass and achieving if you do it in a more strategic, creative, and boundaried way.

Today's episode is on a topic that is near and dear to my heart: using your voice. What is it about standing up for what we believe in, speaking truth to power, and being willing to be vulnerably seen for our opinions that's so terrifying? Using your voice is often a question of -- or sign of -- your power. And for individuals who hold a minority identity, specifically BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and women, using your fullest, truest voice can feel terrifying. Like one wrong move puts your job security or career in jeopardy. It can feel a lot easier to suffer silently and put your head down. But today's episode of the podcast is why being courageous and sticking your neck out is so important. Career and leadership coach Nariah Broadus talks about finding her own voice, how she supports others in amplifying their voices, and offers advice for how to have your own back (and provide a microphone for others' voices, too).
