The Civilian: Recent Episodes

Sarah Bohl

Your atypical political periodical brings you a companion podcast. We want to have fewer arguments and more conversations. Host Sarah Bohl will address current political and civic issues (all in a completely non-biased, nonpartisan way), and also answer reader questions. This is a companion podcast for The Civilian's newsletter, which you can find at TheCivilian.substack.com or find us on Twitter or Instagram @TheCivilianNews

Podcast Episode 9 is here (if the pod.link isn’t working, just search in any podcast app for The Civilian) and we are talking about the historic flooding that has devastated our area. Media coverage often talks about levees, the Corps of Engineers, conservation, fisheries & wildlife, etc, and I wanted to make sure I was understanding all of the complexity and nuance that goes in to flooding, river control, and the impact that they have on our country.

The relief organizations we mention in the podcast are MO Farm Bureau, American Red Cross, and donating to local food banks.

What is media bias? Does it really exist? How can we combat it? What are trustworthy news sources?

Head here to read this week's The Civilian, which discusses these topics perhaps more eloquently (LOL), or click here to read a transcript.

I have gone on the record saying I would not speak about the reproductive rights debate on The Civilian, since it is so emotionally charged, I didn't know if I could successfully produce content without bias. However...

After a particularly upsetting attack directed at my state, we take to the airwaves to ponder if civility even has a place in the reproductive rights debate, how to better convince people to take to your side, and other tips to further your cause, whatever that may be.

Yes, the Mueller report has been covered and smothered in the past few days, but there were a few major gaps I didn't understand. What is this executive privilege that AG Barr was talking about? And what's with the debate on whether a sitting President can be indicted, and what does that mean for this investigation?

To help fill us in, I asked my "resident Constitutional expert" weigh in. My guest today is a JD and worked for two members of Congress where he worked extensively in policy. He also happens to be my husband!

You can find Eric Bohl on his agricultural podcast, Digging In with Missouri Farm Bureau, on your favorite listening app.

For more information, please visit The Civilian to see the issues on the Mueller Report, the Impeachment Process, and how to contact your member of Congress.

Thanks for tuning in to Episode 2! Today I'm talking about a shocking statistic: that one in six Americans has stopped speaking to a friend or family member because of the 2016 election. How can we have more conversations and less arguments? How can we stand up for what we believe in without estranging ourselves from our loved ones?

I'm also talking about why I started the #localgovernmentchallenge, and answering a reader's question about "The Wall."
