Here are 10 quick things you can do…
*Important point: It's hard to have absolute control/monitoring on YouTube.

Talk and watch - obvious but important. Talk to your kids and watch with them. The thing about YouTube is that most people and kids like to share.

Turn on restricted mode - hides comments, filters some bad content (though not all of it)

Look for a church that has 1) good theology, 2) meaningful worship, 3) good community.

- It's a training ground for character/integrity, and doing hard things.

- Even watching sports gives you just a shared experience and an opportunity to just talk.
Pitfalls of Sports
- False identity (I am _______________)
- An excuse to sin (cheating, treating others poorly)
- It can be a distraction and take away from true spiritual community and growing in Jesus
Starter Questions/Ways to Connect Over Sports
- Learn the sports and teams and players that your student likes and why.
- If you student doesn't really care for sports, it could just be an opportunity to hear what they don't like and why. (It's not wrong to not like a sport, but it could be a good connection point to learn more about them)
- Do they love watching certain sports?
- Do they like playing certain sports?
- What are the things that make [INSERT FAVORITE SPORT HERE] so awesome?
(If your student plays a sport)
- What do you love about that sport? What is hard about that sport?
- (If a team sport) What is the best part about playing on a team? What's hard?
- Do you feel like you are the same person on and off "the field"?
- What tempts you the most? (is it cheating? being harsh with others? desiring to win above all else? etc)

Who's Responsible?

Definition: Adolescence - “The prolonged transitional period of time from childhood to adulthood.”
Especially during adolescence we believe there are three primary, and foundational, questions that teens need help answering.
- Who Am I?
- Where Do I Belong?
- What Difference Do I Make?
Each of these questions we can find answers to in Scripture. Here are just a few to chew on:
- Ephesians 2:10
- Genesis 1:27
- 2 Corinthians 5:20
- Ephesians 1:5
Based on someones answer to these three questions we find out how to be responsible. Responsibility is the defining characteristic and marker of the end of Adolescence.
Responsibility: “Acting, thinking, and speaking accordingly, based on where you are, who is around, and what you’re supposed to be doing.”
Pray about, Consider, and search scripture for ways you can teach your students how to be responsible. And use it as a tool and way to talk with them about Christ, both when they succeed and fail. Remind them of Who They are in Him, Where they belong, and What He wants them to do!

Today on the podcast, Ryan, Stephen, and Josh talk about #helenkellerisfake and the heart of a cynical student.
NOTES
- There is a trend going around on TikTok (#helenkellerisfake). This trend is largely a way that GenZ is trying to be funny by poking holes at something as incredible as the story and accomplishments of Helen Keller.
- This trend is just one example, intended or not, of a lot of information that is out on the internet that students have to sort through and wrestle with to decide what is true and what is just fake news.
- This can lead to unhealthy cynicism in students, where they begin to doubt the motives and intentions of everyone. This does not lead to a 1 Corinthians 13 kind of love.
- It's good to wrestle with things to see if they are true, but if we don't have a baseline of truth (aka - the Bible), then we're going to just be tossed around by whatever we think might be true.
- A snowball effect of unhealthy cynicism is a hardened heart.
- A hardened heart is like hard, dry ground. Nothing grows there. So, it's key to "sow righteousness" and to seek the Lord. (Hosea 10:12)
Tools:
- Whenever you have conversations about news or current events, keep pointing yourself and your student back to what is clearly true in the Bible.
- Go after your student's hard heart, like it says in Hebrews 3:12-13, but daily encouraging your student with the truth about God's character and promises. Forcing it on them, but encouraging them, or calling them to the truth and the hope of Jesus.

The Couch Time Podcast Smartphones, Technology, & Your Students 12.23.19 There may be a smart device under your Christmas tree. You may have been asked for a smart device. Maybe everyone in your family has a smart device. No matter where your family is, there are several things we would recommend you to think about with your family and technology. Just like with anything, there are good and bad uses for technology. There are horror stories all over the internet about students making bad decisions or people preying on students. This can make you want to run & hide, OR, we can figure out how to engage and help our students navigate the digital world. SPECIAL EPISODE!! How To Navigate Change In today's SPECIAL EPISODE Josh and Ryan talk with Fort Thomas Campus Pastor, Peter LaRuffa, about how to help your students navigate different kinds of change. - Be careful to acknowledge the loss. Even in good change, change always results in a loss, and it's important in the grief process to acknowledge the loss. - Don't expect your student to grieve just like you grieve. - Don't try to fix the sadness right away. Don't jump to hope too quickly. Sit with the tears. - Don't misinterpret your student's response for a lack of support or trust in you. Give your student a "grace pass". Put yourself in THEIR shoes at THEIR age. - The more you listen, the more you'll get from your son or daughter. - A helpful acronym: R.A.F.T. Reconciliation - Are there relationships you need to mend before the change occurs? Affirmation - Are there people you need to thank before the change occurs? Farewell - Say goodbye! (to the person, place, or thing) Think about the destination - What good will be able to come out of this change? - Do something visual or symbolic to seal that memory or milestone in your mind. - Don't bypass the grief process. Help your student do things that will put them in a space to think and potentially feel emotions. - Ask your student, "What's one last thing you'd like to do?" - Especially when important leaders transition, it's important to encourage your student to not compare the new person with the last person. Look for the good in the new leader. - Pray together and remember the character and promises of God! What promises, what about God is relevant in this change right now?

Key passage: Romans 10:5-13 - Question: Are there kinds of people or certain kinds of sin that cannot be forgiven by God? Remember “everyone and all” means “everyone and all”. - Be careful about putting your hope in your student “praying the prayer” and not seeing them commit to follow Jesus. - Also, be careful about casting doubt that will make your student question their salvation, when maybe sometimes it’s a maturity issue, not a sin/following Jesus issue. - What’s keeping you from the next step in your faith journey? - What’s keeping you from trusting in Jesus for the first time? - What’s keeping you from following Jesus with everything now? - Who do you know that doesn’t love Jesus? Does it break your heart? - Are you praying for your student’s friends, with your student, for those who don’t love Jesus? *It’s really important that we spend time DAILY, looking up to Jesus, and being grateful for the grace and forgiveness we have in Jesus. Talk to your kids about their reaction to their sin: Where is your student at with how they view their sin and Jesus’ sacrifice for them? Do they see themselves as a sinner? Do they think their sin is so bad that it's unforgivable? Remind them of the power of Jesus’ sacrifice! Talk to your kids about sacrifice: How can they sacrifice to love people around them? As a family, how can you sacrifice something to love another family? What are ways to think about people more than you think about yourself? Remind them sacrifice comes at a cost. Stay focused on the reason you sacrifice; it should not be out of guilt but in light of what Jesus has done for us.

Last night kicked off our first week of our new teaching series! So what happened last night? All campuses teaching on Back to the Start We love in a broken world, students feel that and experience it on a regular basis. In recognition of our brokenness, let’s see what things were supposed to be when they were made right. Mankind is made specifically in the Image of God. God’s design was perfectly good, and our students were designed to be a reflection of Him. If we are going to reflect God, then we need to know what He is like. The world is trying to redefine design, but we have God’s word and we need learn that foundation. Remember that your students are seeing brokenness on a daily basis. Allow the brokenness to be a reminder that this is not how God designed things to be. Take moments of brokenness and point them to Jesus. Pray about the hard things your kids are working through, things are different as culture changes. Suicide is rising and so is confusion of identity. Remember that God’s design was perfect and we will live in that glory. Be excited!

We have wrapped up Alongside and another summer is in the books. There are some good questions we have received about the book and "what now?" Join us for part 2 of a great dialogue about your questions! Name two things that your parents did or said that encouraged you in your walk with Jesus? Ryan: Waking up and seeing my dad reading his Bible, or having just finished it—I wanted to be disciplined and love God’s word. My mom modeled loving people well. It was all less of what they told me but their modeling Jesus in how they lived their life. Josh: My mom often said, “Just always do what Jesus wants you to do regardless of our reactions.” My dad modeled the kindness and gentleness of there Lord. Talk about a time where you have seen God work in the life of a student and if you could do your teenage years over again name two things you would change? Check out the podcast for the answers!!!

In this Episode: Chapters 25 & 26 of Alongside Chapter 25 Fear Faith is the opposite of the fear of man | taking steps based on who God is and what He has done. If I fear man too much I need to grow my faith in God. Why don’t we pursue teenagers? What keeps us from pressing into a conversation about sex, faith, persecution? What keeps us silent?
Where do I take appropriate risks and how do I step into uncomfortable areas. “Are your kids watching you take any risks or step outside of your comfort zone?” Parents have the most consistent opportunities to show faith played out and live life day after day.
Teaching our kids how to engage with fear. Bring the fear into the light and show your kids by modeling this. Chapter 26 Strings God's love came to us when we couldn’t attain it ourselves. Confronting selfishness. Jesus loved with no strings attached. We may not know what the strings are in the love we pour out…until they are not met. Let’s bring God and our need for his help every day and let that increase our prayer life. Chapter 24 Solo Jesus got alone to spend time with His Father. Jesus ministry flowed out of His solitude, regularly spending time with His Father. Do your kids see you spending time with God? Chapters 21 Fix Are we quick to want to fix before we show that we care. Initial care is not usually difficult, long-suffering care is difficult. Jesus cared for Judas, cleansed his feet, the feet of a young man who would hand him over to be murdered. Do you love your kid because your kid is lovable? Or because you want something out of it? Or because it shows them Jesus? Is your first impulse care, or say “you should have…” Chapter 22 Grace We have to remember our sin and the grace we have received in order to extend it to others. We can speak with authority on hope when we have hope. Lord willing, your kids will be the ones to show grace on others, we should lead by example. Passage: Hebrews 10:1-18 Our sin was so bad that it needed to be paid for by blood, by something or someone dying. Jesus came to pay for sin once for all. Points & Questions: Are you setting the tone in your home for what it looks like to see, acknowledge, seek forgiveness, and repent of sin? Do your kids see you do this? Guards come down when you are honest with your sin with your kids and set the example. Spend time thinking about how bad your sin is that it required the perfect Son of God, Jesus, to die. View and interact with your kids in the joy of your sins being forgiven. Ways to be present with your kids and lead by example. Principle #1: Be Present - Show Up Mentally (intentional engagement) - Show Up Randomly (randomly find ways of drawing near to your kids) Principle #2: Making It Personal (Lead example) - Be in a community group (find one HERE) - Set priorities (spiritually and relationally) - Be real (show your kids how to go through hard things while clinging to and being affected by Jesus) Ultimately: Pursue Jesus, for JESUS...be an example as an overflow or a by-product. The best thing you can do for your kids is to work on your relationship with your Savior. Who is Melchizedek? Real rest. Will God change His mind about you? Hebrews 7 Overview - Remember the Priest-King Melchizedek? (see Gen 14) - Jesus is like Melchizedek - Jesus is the ultimate Priest - He is indestructible - He is always on the job - He's the mediator of a better hope so that we can draw near to God - He's the guarantee of a better covenant - His priesthood is permanent - He can save to the uttermost - His sacrifice is perfect, and only needed to be offered once Other thoughts on the passage - The Mission of God = Restoration - Jesus calls us to rest in Him as our eternal and perfect high priest. - Jesus has given us unlimited, all-access to a relationship with God. What are some of the reasons YOU don't come near to God?
