Two old friends, David Ross and Daniel Bloom, trying to make sense of life in an absurd era. We record in Washington, DC. Efim Shapiro may jump back in at some point.
Ryan Martinez turns the events of his life into musical diaries, and despite this year’s turmoil, he has a lot to sing about. His latest album, “Ensemble,” explores the ever-flowing river of time, pays tribute to the love of his life, Tatyana, and marvels at the miracle of their first-born son, Milo. We led Ryan into the woods of Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, to listen to his songs and talk about the sentiments behind them.

Ben Tolkan is anything but naive; he’s well aware that each day is a fight for his life. In facing down years of chemotherapy, Ben has powered through illness and fear to arrive at a triumph of love. He is a part of a wonderful family, has a great job with Brooklyn Brewery, and in December, he married Abby, the love of his life. The future is unknowable for anyone, especially for him. But despite his protests, everyone who knows Ben and everyone who hears this episode will learn lessons of how to value the present. And we thank him for that. We wish you, your wife Abby, and your family many beautiful years together.

When a cryptic op-ed appeared in The New York Times, it set off a frenzy in US politics. The writer, an anonymous senior official in the White House, criticized the President for whom they served as amoral. With his interest piqued, co-host Dan Bloom decided to do a little online sleuthing. Although the writer's identity remains unknown, there was one key clue that led to Dan's guess. Vice President Mike Pence happens to use an unusual word conspicuously often that also appears in the op-ed: "LODESTAR," defined as “a star that is used to guide the course of a ship.” Just two days later, while basking in the viral notoriety of his hypothesis, Dan was surprised to find his own vocational lodestar suddenly go dark when he was laid off. Luckily, a new, and exciting project quickly materialized, which in turn led to an invitation to the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism conference (ARIJ18) in Jordan. When David Ross left a steady office job to find his own lodestar in more creative work, he could never have anticipated the emotional peaks and valleys he would come to traverse. Along this path, David developed resilience, resolve, and tangible skills like the art of booking talent. David is now using this unique skill set to manage musicians and other acts with his company “Forest and Farms.” DJ/Producer wunderkind Dreamcast (http://soundcloud.com/burymeinamink), indie rock band Ladygod (http://soundcloud.com/ladygodftw), and NBA legend Rod Strickland all make appearances in David’s story, which illuminates the invaluable lessons of “consistent persistence,” self-discovery, and transformative reinvention.

The 5th Annual Funk Parade filled the historic U Street Corridor with music and maDCap was there to capture the energy. Our own David Ross was one of the festival organizers this year and Dan Bloom was lucky enough to run into him and snag a few minutes while walking together down U Street. You'll also hear impromptu appearances by our friends Amy Saidman of Story District and Philippa Hughes of Women of Uncertain Age and you'll hear music by Dave Rob, Batala Washington Women's Drum Corps, and Be'la Dona, the dynamo all-woman GoGo band.

Upon hearing the 22 year-old Trevor Sensor's unique voice, we knew our little tunnel underneath Dupont Circle would wrap its arms around him. Straight out of Sterling, IL, his singing style tilts its hat to prominent voices like Bob Dylan. Since it was just he and his weapon of choice, an old but classy acoustic guitar, we thought it'd be best to record in the iGlow (installation built by artist Hiroshi Jacobs).

Naz's character succumbs to Freddy's advice. Was like pulling teeth though. One would say, wasn't till life burned him that he realized what was best for him. Loved this episode overall. Episode 5 though...just you wait.

Hey Hey, so we're now three episodes deep into HBO's new series, "The Night Of." Per usual, Fernando Madrigal and I put on our detective goggles and try to solve the mystery that keeps us up at night (slight exaggeration). This episode was called "A Dark Crate." So much happens. SO much. Let's see. Naz experiences a few ice breakers in jail. A fellow inmate (Freddy) extends a hand. Naz swats that shit away though. His attorney John Stone gets the boot for a high-powered attorney with an associate who is smarter than her (Chandra). Apologies for screwing that up in the episode. I even ridiculed Fernando for saying the name for what I thought to be incorrect. But no, it was I who wasn't up on my shit. For this, I lower my head in shame.
Sticking to my thoughts on this though: I think Hassan did it.

Osa The Healer (Osaretin Obaseki) is a writer, poet, activist and so much more. The first time I met this dude was in elementary school. Fast forward to when we were in high school and he was the guy who was flowing constantly walking around the hallways. Always towering over his audience in height, the rhymes never stopped. Always enlightening, always captivating, always true to the art of story telling. First time recording him was in my parents' basement where DJ ADA (Adam Butler) spun and Osa and two others free-styled over the beats. Man, I wish I could find that recording! We were just kids but the passion was there. Now years later, we're doing the same thing. Just got more resources to work with now. It has been my distinct pleasure to record Osa The Healer in Dupont Underground. More to come. For now, just appreciate the message and its relevance.

Blue Healer is David Beck, Bryan Mammel and Dees Stribling. This is one of the earlier Dupont Underground Sessions that we haven't yet released the video for. Had to post the audio though. The streets need it.
Like many of the bands recorded, they rolled up in a white van. They then asked few questions as they were guided into a tunnel, which can be described only as sketchy as hell upon first glance. These are some of their underground sounds.

This happened just on a whim. I met Zack at an event and struck up a conversation with him. He told me that he was in town from San Francisco to support a film he did music for called, “Chocolate Mountain Metal.” It’s a short documentary, directed by Ryan Maxey and Danielle Davis that premiered at AFI DOCS in Washington, D.C. We talked about music, him being particularly fond of Brian Eno’s “Music for Airports” album, which an old podcast guest of maDCap also really loved. I then told him I record musicians in tunnels underneath Dupont Circle. And just like that, we were able to make the above audio happen. This took place on a calm Sunday morning and it was the perfect music for tunnels.

This definitely happened. We were too excited to not release this audio immediately. Prior to their sold out show at Uhall, Norway's Aurora Aksnes along with bandmates O. Martin (guitar) and Magnus Skylstad (percussion, hiding in the background) performed two songs at Dupont Underground. It sounded so beautiful. This song is called, "I Went Too Far" off of their album, "All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend."

Melissa Rosenberg is one of the most successful women screenwriters in the game. She’s written on so, so many shows. Shows that have done well too. Most notably she was head writer and executive producer for the Showtime original series, “Dexter.” Remember Dexter Morgan? Her work on this series helped it win the Peabody Award, three Emmy nominations, three Writers Guild of America Award nominations, and two Golden Globe Nominations for Best Drama Series. Aaaaand she also wrote all of the Twilight film scripts.
Her latest role is as creator and executive producer of “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” which can be seen on Netflix. After a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases in New York City. It stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica and is joined by a cast including David Tennant, Mike Colter, Rachel Taylor and many others.
In 2011, Rosenberg started her own production company, Tall Girls Productions, which is focused on “developing and producing film and TV series with an emphasis on interesting, complex roles for women in front of and behind the camera.”
In this episode she guides us through her early years, talks about her craft and character development. Then we hit her with some random questions.

The Leftovers has gone stale. Though the HBO series’ second season has garnered positive reviews so far, I ain’t buying what HBO is selling. It’s not that the show is bad – HBO wouldn’t have greenlit it if it was. However, after a lukewarm first season that withheld action and information until its ninth episode or so, I had expectations for the second season to be different and elicit more growth from its main characters. Unfortunately, all that seems to be different is the setting and the directors’ choice to include more racial diversity in some not-so-subtle casting decisions.
Actually, subtlety is a weak point for The Leftovers. The show tries so hard to be bizarre and symbolic and it just doesn’t work. It has plenty of opportunities to be surrealist and clever, but misses out on most of them. That combined with the utter joylessness of the show and all of its characters makes this show a pretty depressing watch. Don’t get me wrong, it’s understandably a depressing premise – 2 percent of the world’s population vanishes for Pete’s sake. But a show like that needs to provide redemption in either answers or its characters; The Leftovers provides neither.
Take a listen and hopefully you’ll understand.
We've sat on this for quite some time. Max Richter is composer for HBO's series, "The Leftovers." He's a classical genius, with a contemporary edge. We waited on this because we wanted to do this right and still really want to do more. But being that the series returns to the screen this Sunday, we figure why not hear what we were able to cut up.

We went to Firefly Music Festival and had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Cody Simpson. There we sat, in Dover, DE in a tent that gave its strongest attempt at shielding us somewhat from the humidity. Cody spoke to us about his new album, Free and what it means to him. He also sheds light on who influences him and what he's learned along his journey. The kid is kinda wise for being only 18.

Things of that nature. These students have been phenomenal, just like interns of the past (Marquis Goodwin, Drew Snadecki and Kristy Nguyen). We will miss them quite dearly.
This is the first intern wrap-up we've recorded. Basically, we had them sit in-studio and just chat. And laugh, as one final hurrah together. That's exactly what they did.

Today, maDCap visits with the profound and prolific novelist T.C. Boyle. His 25th work of fiction is titled "The Harder They Come," and if you're already humming Jimmy Cliff, keep listening because it's in here. If you think T.C. Boyle didn't do that on purpose, you don't yet know him well enough.
The Hudson Valley native has been going westward for many years, first earning a Master's degree at the Iowa Writer's Workshop and eventually planting roots in Southern California, where he was crucial to the founding of USC's Creative Writing Program in 1978.
Above all, T.C. Boyle wants to create and refine his art every day. He wants to do it his way, unabashedly so, and with such ability to translate our world's paradoxes to the page, we hope he keeps on going for 25 more...at least.
This conversation was enabled by the good folks at the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, hosting an event in Washington DC with T.C. Boyle on Friday, March 27th at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, located across the street from the Folger Shakespeare Library.

It was great to speak to Jay and Mark Duplass. They are two gents from Louisiana who have been pumping out quality entertainment for years. First time we saw them was late night on cable years ago with the short film called "This is John."
In this conversation, we talk about their latest endeavor "Togetherness" an eight-episode series on HBO. It was created by the two brothers and their high school friend, Steve Zissis (who has an amazing story, FYI). This is also the debut of the Duplass bros as a writing team. The show stars Mark Duplass, Melanie Lynskey, Steve Zissis, Amanda Peet, Peter Gallagher and John Ortiz.
Here's the synopsis: Brett and Michelle are struggling to rekindle the spark in their relationship, which has puttered out from the stresses of marriage and children. When Brett’s friend Alex and Michelle’s sister, Tina, move in with them, the foursome engage in a tragically comedic struggle to follow their personal dreams, while still remaining good friends, siblings and spouses to each other.

The combination of presidents and sex puzzled the commuters of Washington, D.C. But with puzzlement comes intrigue, and with intrigue, comes excitement. Metro riders were caught off guard. Most of these people have never spoken about which First Lady was the best at performing oral sex or which president was horrible at pleasuring his wife. However, it was clear to us that all of them have thought about it in great detail. The combination of politics and sex is often a dangerous potion, but the people we spoke to were as jovial as President Ford waiting in his outdoor pool with a glass of wine. With every recoil, smile, and laugh, the perverted people of the Metro reminded us why we come out here every week. Commuters are amazing people who can be reading notes for an important meeting one-second, and talking about whether or not Abe Lincoln was down with the booty the next. Only in D.C.
There's just so much to say about RJD2 it's hard to even write a blog post about him. But we're sure as hell going to try. His breakout album was Deadringer which was released in 2002. Singles like “Ghostwriter,” “Work,” and sooo many others pretty much influenced a culture.
This interview went down in July at Moonrise Festival in Baltimore which was hosted by our pals at Steez Promo. What's most interesting about this episode is that we tried to arrange this with his manager and publicist a week prior but we lost contact closer to show. This was all about timing. Had we not seen this guy backstage, (by himself we should mention) this wouldn't have happened. Most artists were chauffeured to the stages they were to perform at on these golf carts in the roped off areas. RJ walked through the crowd. By himself. I imagine he may even have had to convince security that he was in fact performing when he got to his destination.
We chatted about what goes into his set and how easy things can malfunction (it's a technical ass set), Teena Marie, and the emotive responses people have to his sounds.
Please keep in mind this was recorded at a music festival, which accounts for the noisy background. But as usual, maDCap made this jam work.

Laura Silverman plays Jane on the HBO series, "The Comeback" which had its season finale on Dec 28. The series was created by Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow. I realize that not everybody who reads this is old enough to remember how most of us came to know Kudrow. For those not in the know, Kudrow played "Phoebe" on the acclaimed series "Friends." In "The Comeback" she plays Valerie Cherish, an embarrassing actress with a thirst for the big time, even when it wants nothing to do with her. Once a star, and not so much anymore, she tries to revive her career by doing a documentary about her life. She hires a student film crew and has the highest of hopes in pitching the final edited documentary to Bravo. Jane was the producer of this tanking documentary. She's mostly heard off camera, being snapped at by Varelie.
This series was first filmed in 2009 and was canceled after one season. Behold, the suits wanted it brought back and it airs a second and final season in 2014. In season 2, Jane has since grown into a serious documentary filmmaker. But Valerie is back at her door. With one last request.

This was a fun one. Truth be told, one of our girlfriends recommended we interview Tim. She thought it'd be interesting. And it certainly was. This was recorded in the cafe at the Black Cat, a venue located off of 14th St in D.C. Special thanks to the Black Cat for turning off the ceiling fan and the music they normally listen to as they craft their delicious meals.
Seated at a booth, Tim DeLaughter gave us his story. It was filled with triumph, sadness and rebirth. I'm not going to give away any more than that.

This week, intern Drew Snadecki interviewed Asher Roth, a hip-hop artist who spoke the famously wise words, “Do I really have to graduate? Or can I just stay here the rest of my life?” back in 2008.
What has the Bucks County, PA native been up to since he presumably graduated?
Making his father proud, of course.
“He’s extremely critical, which I think is great for me, because when you start to see some success, you start to get a lot of people just wanting to keep you happy, not wanting to piss you off,” said Roth. “We call them Yes Men, and my father definitely isn’t one of them.”
Roth even has a track dedicated to his father called “His Dream,” and used SAT vocabulary to tell us why. He said, “[I’m a] total mama’s boy…my dad was the disciplinarian, my mother was kind of loose, but now that I’m grown up, the authority that my dad had in the household really plays a part of where I am now. It’s just kind of like a little bit more mature and taking this opportunity to sit with you and other opportunities a little more seriously.”
It appears that Roth is all grown up and his biggest hit to date is but a distant memory. Listen above to hear about Roth’s other musical influences and his severe case of “Rap Tourrette’s.”

On Saturday, May 3, history will be made yet again in the U Street neighborhood of Washington DC. A one-of-a kind participatory parade and music festival is descending on the funkiest part of our Nation's Capital, and we have local-boy-made-good Justin Rood to thank for it. Three dozen musical acts will fill eleven free performance areas during the day, leading up to a parade down V Street from 5-7 PM, and from 7 until late into the night, local music venues like U Street Music Hall, Tropicalia, DC9, Twins Jazz Club and Patty Boom Boom will offer free performances. maDCap took a drive with Justin Rood and heard all about the Funk Parade while driving along Saturday's route. Sweetgreen is one of the best places on the east coast to get a salad, and what else would a company known for organic kale do to expand their footprint but start a music festival? The annual Sweetlife festival draws thousands of fans to Merriweather Post Pavilion, and that's where maDCap caught up with musician Robert DeLong last year. DeLong is a man of many talents: drummer, singer, songwriter, producer and one hell of a performer. He commands the stage from his drum set, often employing computer game controllers in his live sets. He tells us about his upbringing, musical process, and yes, the face paint. Then, Dolly Wells is co-creator, executive producer and writer of Doll and Em on HBO. It's a six-episode series about London woman (Doll) who breaks things off with her boyfriend and moves to work as an assistant for her movie star best friend (Em.) Hilarity ensues. David learned about the struggles of the creative process and the show's wild ass content from the California native. Then, while Cali has been on the forefront of prescribing medicinal marijuana for nearly two decades, but as of 2009, Washington DC has been in the game too. We'll close today's show with the proprietor of the only licensed medicinal marijuana dispensary north of Downtown, Takoma Wellness Center. It may sound like a yoga studio, but the only tree pose you'll find there is of the sticky-icky variety. And who runs this haven of herbal remedies? None other than Rabbi...yes Rabbi Jeffrey Kahn, whom we spoke to on the week of passover. He tells us about his personal journey, religious philosophy, and give a history of cannabis in America.

Two creative brothers, the elder of whom is wildly successful, looms large over the younger's creative ambitions. Matt Berninger is lead singer of 'The National,' they have six acclaimed albums and sold-out world tours. His younger brother Tom is trained as a filmmaker and while looking for his next step in life, jumped at the chance to serve as assistant tour manager on one of Matt's tours. Although the gig didn't exactly go as planned, Tom made the fortuitous decision to bring his camera along for the ride. After his unceremonious exit from his job on tour, Tom retreated first to the family home in Cincinnati, and then decamped at Matt's Brooklyn abode to craft the film 'Mistaken for Strangers.'
Matt's wife Carin Besser deserves no small part of the credit. She's a former fiction editor at The New Yorker and lent an expert hand to Tom in shaping his melange of footage into a cohesive and compelling narrative. 'Mistaken for Strangers' is worth your time and it's out in theaters, On Demand and iTunes today.

Confining Black History to February not only relegates African American history to the shortest month of the year, but it may serve to justify a lack of attention during the rest of the year. Despite our misgivings, today we discuss one of the baddest Black characters on television. Our guest is Carl Jones, the creator and executive producer of Black Dynamite on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. We will also hear the voices of prominent African Americans on the topic of Black History Month, and finally, we’re treated to a commentary in the form of an airing of grievances from our own David Ross.

Born Barclay Crenshaw in Cleveland, VonStroke's identity was shaped by a mandated cello practice, an upbringing in the suburbs of Detroit, and the support of his then-girlfriend (now wife) who gave him the gift of opportunity, enabling him to follow his dreams at a crucial time. Eight years later, dirtybird records is a powerhouse label with a roster of heavyweight talents, a residency in Ibiza and an ever-growing reputation. The 100th release on dirtybird is Claude VonStroke's third artist album, titled 'Urban Animal.'

Tauk is a four-piece instrumental band from New York who make driving and evocative music that touches the soul. Guitarist Matt Jalbert, keyboardist Alric 'AC' Carter and bass player Charlie Dolan have been performing together since middle school, adding drummer Isaac Teel to complete the quartet a few years ago. Dan & David caught up with Tauk ahead of their show at the 8 x 10 in Baltimore in November, and this young, ambitious band gave maDCap a fascinating look behind the curtain of a group living out their dreams, moving complete strangers with their songs, and striving to make a living in the music business.

Thursday evening was the season finale of Save Me on NBC, a show where the main character, Beth Harper (played by Anne Heche) hears the voice of God. Darlene Hunt is the executive producer and showrunner for "Save Me," previously she was executive producer for "The Big C" on Showtime. Darlene Hunt is the creator of some hilarious prose and we chatted it out about her latest opus on NBC, while touching on some other fun topics regarding God:)

MaDCap DC turns 10. Well, not really. We made it through 10 episodes without the powers that be asking us to kindly leave the building. Our guest was the fine and mighty Gabe Silverman, multimedia journalist and global legend. We talk journalism, and cuisine.
MaDCap DC had a lovely conversation about film and the arts with Patrick Taylor and John Hibey, owners of D Dot films - a film house based in Washington, D.C. Hibey recently cowrote and produced "Fishing Without Nets" a short about Somali pirates directed by Cutter Hodierne. This film earned them the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. They've recently teamed up with Vice to shoot the feature. Patrick Taylor provided the original score. Also, special guest Alister Kennedy graces us with his presence.
This is a clip from an old interview that we never released. It was never released mainly because there was no engineer, just David Ross talking to The Reverend with a cheap mic from Radio Shack hooked up to his laptop.
