SEASON 7: TEMPLE BUILDING

The Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 "... do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."

If our bodies are truly Temples of God, why don't we treat them as such? It is too easy for believers to neglect physical health while focusing on spiritual growth. And yet, the scripture is rich with instructions on how we should treat our physical bodies. Your body is a temple, it's time to start building.

"Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."Galatians 6:7-9 ESV

We reap what we sow. But not in a karma-like way. Rather, the more of the world we become attached to, the more we are corrupted. But, the more we align ourselves to God and "sow of the spirit" the more spiritual "fruits" we reap in the harvest. It is time, my fellow Christians, for the spiritual harvest. It's time to reap.

"Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."

Master and disciple walked side by side through a beautiful garden. The disciple suddenly stops and asks, "Master, you teach me the ways of peace, yet I have learned from you deadly techniques of combat and the tactics of war. How do you reconcile the two?” The master responds, “My disciple: it is better to be a warrior tending to his garden than a gardener in a war.”

We are all in the midst of a spiritual war. And too many of us are ill-prepared and equipped. This leaves us feeling beat down and defeated. Are you ready to learn how to become a spiritual warrior?

It is easy to simplify the stories of the Bible. Noah built the ark. David slayed Goliath. Jesus died on the cross. But the story of the crucifixion is anything but simple. It is a rich and intricately woven story of God's infinite and unstoppable plan for salvation. Mockery, a sermon in four parts, sets out to break down these insults and reveal God's infinite and unstoppable plan for salvation.

"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God..."

Ephesians 6:13‭-‬17 ESV

If we are at war, then we need armor. We need the "Whole Armor of God". Paul outlines the elements of spiritual defense needed when combating the wicked one. Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Faith, Salvation, and the Spirit are all necessary to be spiritually victorious in the battles ahead. We are all in the midst of a spiritual war. And too many of us are ill-prepared and equipped. This leaves us feeling beat down and defeated. Are you ready to learn how to become a spiritual warrior?

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."
1 Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20 ESV

War is fought on many fronts, and the same is true for the spiritual war we fight. We are attacked on all fronts: the mind, body, and soul. Before we dig deeper into spiritual battles, let us learn how to both mentally and physically defend against the enemy.

We are all in the midst of a spiritual war. And too many of us are ill-prepared and equipped. This leaves us feeling beat down and defeated. Are you ready to learn how to become a spiritual warrior?

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need."
Ephesians 4:25‭-‬28 ESV

"Give no opportunity to the devil", is the warning Paul gives us as Christian Warriors. And yet, we constantly leave our gates open to him. We flirt with sin and underestimate its destructive power in our lives. Going to war against evil forces starts with yourself, and closing the gates Satan uses to get into your heart.

We are all in the midst of a spiritual war. And too many of us are ill-prepared and equipped. This leaves us feeling beat down and defeated. Are you ready to learn how to become a spiritual warrior?

"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm"
Ephesians 6:13 ESV

Master and disciple walked side by side through a beautiful garden. The disciple suddenly stops and asks, "Master, you teach me the ways of peace, yet I have learned from you deadly techniques of combat and the tactics of war. How do you reconcile the two?” The master responds, “My disciple: it is better to be a warrior tending to his garden than a gardener in a war.”

We are all in the midst of a spiritual war. And too many of us are ill-prepared and equipped. This leaves us feeling beat down and defeated. Are you ready to learn how to become a spiritual warrior?

'Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.' - James 5:13-16 ESV

To be "All In" means being truly reliant on God. And that means going to Him in prayer. And taking EVERYTHING to Him in prayer, the big and the small.

"For by the grace given to me, I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness." - Romans 12:3-8 ESV

God has given each and every one of us different spiritual gifts. Christ spiritually improves our lives, but how can our spiritual gifts help improve Christ's mission on earth? What are you doing in your life to help better serve Jesus?

"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." - Psalm 139:13-14 ESV

You have been handcrafted by God for a marvelous purpose. And because of this, your devotion as a Christian includes how you serve God physically. Your body is God's tool on earth. You are designed to do more than merely exist. You were designed to bring God's love and grace into the world around you!

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned."

  • Romans 12:2-3 ESV

How often are you THINKING about God? Being a Christian is more than a spiritual pursuit, it should be an intellectual one as well. By focusing on the scripture and teachings of Christ, we allow ourselves to be fully transformed by the renewal of our minds.

"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." - Galatians 2:20 ESV

Is "Christian" more than just a checkmark on a census page? Is it something you do on Sunday mornings or a way of life? Choosing to follow Jesus is about more than giving Him a few hours of your week. And your walk with Christ should be more than just a spiritual concern. Becoming a Christian means a fundamental change in who you are. And it means devoting your mind, body, and soul to God and His wisdom. Do you have what it takes to be "All In" with Jesus Christ?

'Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.'  1 Timothy 1:1-5 ESV The Early Christian Church was built on the back of the brave men and women who risked their lives for the sake of spreading the message of Christ. 'Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”' John 20:24-25 ESV

So many people doubt Jesus. They doubt Him now, and they doubted Him during his lifetime. Even those who witnessed marvelous miracles with their own eyes doubted whether He was indeed the messiah. Thomas was no exception. But what was it about Thomas that made his role as a disciple synonymous with doubt?

'Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”' John 11:1-4 ESV

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were a family very close to Jesus's heart. And so, when Lazarus took ill, they turned to Jesus for a miracle. But Jesus allowed Lazarus to die, leaving his family in mourning and asking "why"? They didn't realize just how amazing of a miracle Jesus had in store.

'The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” ( For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” ' John 4:9-10 ESV

Jesus broke a lot of barriers. And his conversation with a Samaritan woman was no exception. Jesus explains to her that the living water He has to offer is better than anything she can draw from the well.

Nicodemus was no fool. He didn't get to his position on the Sanhedrin court by being one. He knew Jesus was challenging the fabric of what he and his fellow High Priests believed. But Nicodemus was also curious. Curious about this Rabbi from Nazareth. Curious about His wisdom. Curious about His power. And curious about Jesus Himself.

"Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. " John 14:8-11 ESV

Philip has a lot of questions when he first appears in the Gospels. But if you pay attention, you'll see just how much he grows in his faith. Philip's story is like many of ours. How much have you grown in Christ Jesus?

At this point, we've discussed the evidence of Jesus the man. Faiths around the world recognize him as a holy messenger of God. But where we differ from the rest of the world is the belief that He is the Messiah. What Christians believe that no one else does is that Jesus was resurrected. That Jesus is the Risen Lord.

There's little doubt that Jesus of Nazareth was a real man. One who left his carpentry job to minister. One who was killed for that very ministry. The debate is about his divinity. The events surrounding his birth point not just to his role as Messiah, but as a fulfillment of centuries of prophecies.

Jesus called his followers "Salt of the Earth" & "Light of the World". Easy phrases to skim over. But upon deeper reflection, these phrases mean one thing. We (as God's children) are here to glorify God and all of His creation. And that includes our fellow man. Let us not tear down others but build them up. And in doing so magnify the love of God.
