Daddy Eats Last is where we discuss the challenges of being a man in modern society....and whatever the hell that even means
With the Matildas and the Diamonds leading the way....what do we really think of womens sport.
It's been a while since we all caught up, but we chat life and a lot about Ryan climbing Mont Blanc.
One of the last things on his bucket list before coming back to Australia to live.
This episode we talk about:
Matty turning 40,
grey pubic hair
goals update
what is past your bedtime.
getting a dog back into Australia
Whether you drink a lot or only once in a while, giving up alcohol may lead to changes in your body and mind. We discuss what these are over a short and longer term.
We also touch base on our 2023 goals and how we are tracking.
Before you focus on goal-setting, it helps to pull back and focus on your overarching life priorities first. This ensures that the goals you’re setting are in line with both your long-term vision and core values, rather than being short-sighted or an inefficient use of your time and energy.
It’s easy for goal-setting to become an overwhelming process. Some goals, especially the big ones, can feel especially daunting or impossible to begin. But the truth is you can reach any goal you set—no matter how big or long-term it is—as long as you break it down into small enough steps.
With that in mind we all share some of our goals for 2023 in this episode.

Is the modern man a hunter or a gentleman? A manual labourer or a technophile? In today's culture the modern man usually is a mix of many things. The modern man must be adaptable.
Gender roles are changing and blending together and the stay-at-home dad or part time dad population is growing.
More fathers than ever are participating in their children's nurturing and upbringing.
The thing is that fathers and mothers come into the parenting process differently though. For the mother, the connection is biological. It's a part of her.
Fathering, on the other hand, is less so. Therefore, it's important for men to learn the skills they need to be a good dad. For some guys it's more intuitive, like kicking a football, but most guys need a coach or some direction.

Daddy Eats Last is back for an episode and after 4 months there's a lot to catch up on.
Ryan lets us in on his recent wedding. Matty updates us on his 2022 goals, especially his renovation and Kane asks the boys more about spooning.
Plus a whole lot more....

This week Ryan talks to us about his experience studying at Cambridge over the last 18 months.
This week we discuss Matty running a marathon last Sunday and the good and bad about it.
We also discuss how he managed the marathon 3 week school holidays with 3 kids!
Keeping up with the Joneses is the slang term referring to the comparison of yourself with your neighbor as a benchmark for social class or the accumulation of material goods.
To fail to "keep up with the Joneses" is perceived as demonstrating inferiority or being a failure.
So how do you avoid that? Kane and Ryan discuss that this week.
Ryan has changed jobs in the last week so we talking about jobs, changing roles, giving notice and how your work (and especially when you're not happy at work) can affect your personality at home.
This week we discuss the differences between kids birthday parties today with what we experienced back when we were kids in the 1980s and early 1990s.
A recent study has has shown that 88 percent of children participated in organised activities four to five days per week. Crazy?
The pressure of too many extracurricular activities can put too much strain on families.
We discuss Extra Curricular Activities this week.
Mothers have a significant impact on their sons to the extent that the way they behave in their later years is attributed to their relationship with their mother. No other person understands a child better than a mother. Right from the time he is born till his adult years, a boy nurtures a deep-rooted bond with his mom.
Kane discusses this on Mothers Day 2022.
With Ryan moving house for the 6th time in 2 and a half years we discuss some of our tips for moving house. Main one being avoid moving :-p
In the Queensland school holidays Matty and his kids had an accident in the car.
We discuss what and how this happened and the school holidays in this weeks episode.
Today we to discuss in what ways might we might be a difficult person to work with or for?
This often applies equally at home!
We also discuss whether Ryan has the Rona!
Today we to discuss adaptability.
Some children are very flexible and are able to progress smoothly and quickly after they encounter a change in schedule or routine. They are also able to accept new items or ideas easily and without much fuss. Other children, however, have a more stressful time transitioning.
This is a trait that I’d like to think that I have, in that I can adapt to changes reasonably well…..but is one that I worry might not be a natural trait my son has.
We have a few tips for parents in teaching ability to their kids....and themselves.
Live sport can be magical. The atmosphere, the anxiety, the thrills.
This week we discuss our favourite live sporting events that we have been to to.
Today we are going to discuss confidence.
When children feel confident and secure, they're more likely to succeed in school and achieve personal goals. As they get older, they learn to confront problems and resist peer pressure. More important, having a positive self-image helps a child feel happy and capable of maintaining personal relationships.
We go through some tips on helping building confidence in your kids.
What does being a successful parent may look like? Don't get me wrong, I make heaps of mistakes as a parent, but I do actively try to think about trying to be a good parent (in my case a dad) a lot and I do read different opinions (in articles and books) and listen to different opinions (mainly in podcasts). I also stuff things up.....frequently. My many mistakes aside I know what I want my parenting to lead to. My only goal of being a parent is raise a happy and caring human. Raising a child who turns out to be a happy teenager and adult oh and also one who openly cares for his fellow humans. That is what success actually looks like to me.
Over the next few weeks when Ryan & Matty are not available for an episode I'll be running through some of the many things that I think are really important when raising kids. By things I mean main character traits that I think are really important to try and teach your kids that will give them the best chance of being happy when they are older. And don't worry if you don't have those traits yourself.....maybe they can help you as well. Because to me that's all the matters.
Matty and Kane remember what it was like being a new dad and how hard it was as well as some of the things that helped us get through the first few months (and how long that hard time was for us).

One of the most annoy things you can do to me is waste my time. It's always been an issue for me. Why is that?
Physicist Albert-László Barabási once wrote, “Time is our most valuable non-renewable resource, and if we want to treat it with respect, we need to set priorities.”
I cannot put it any better than that.
So how can you reclaim some of your time back, well ‘ve got a few quick tips that may help you do exactly that (so long as you don’t go and then waste it on flippant stuff).

It’s the 2nd week of January in a New Year and you may already be over it. Especially with the mushrooming of COVID cases in Australia. It's enough to get anyone disheartened or disinterested or disengaged.
When this happens, it’s very, very difficult to stay motivated and on track and that usually leads to procrastination.
We give you a few tips to keep on track.
NOTE: Matty has COVID, is doing well though and we hope to get his full story in next weeks episode.
Most people want to see some kind of change or improvement in their lives from time to time. Setting goals is an effective way to increase motivation and to help you to create the changes you want.
We discuss a basic goal setting process for the year ahead.
As the new year is on the horizon, in this weeks short episode I’m going to take a look at some easy New Year's resolutions that literally anyone can stick to. Even me.
Stop gossiping and complaining and whinging. Spread positivity.
Also avoid people who have those traits as much as you can.
Give one compliment a day. It just might make that person feel a whole lot better. Spread positivity remember.
Go a whole day without checking your email. Woooooah hold on there. Seriously?
Yes seriously nothing that bad is going to happen, it can wait until tomorrow.
Turn off your phone one night a week. Woooooah hold on there. Seriously?
Yes, you’re basically sleeping on that phone anyway looking at drivel. Drivel you don’t need it!
Read a book a month That’s 12 books in the year. Not really that many, but more than average.
Reduce your waste. I read in my sons book that each Australian creates about 1,000kg of waste a year. That’s disgusting. You can do better.
Drink more water. We are mostly made up of water.
Call a friend instead of texting them. Bonus points if you video call them! Try to do it weekly with someone.
Go to the dentist I hate the dentist, but your oral heath is very important.
Go and get your skin checked Skin cancer is a huge issue in Australia. I get my skin checked every 6 months and try and put sunscreen on every day.
Take a break from Social Media Or delete it Or look at it less Or at least just be nice on it and not a troll.
Hug your loved ones more. Or kiss them Or have more sex. Start with hugging them so they know you care and go from there.
Donate clothes you never wear. And if you’re parent donate your kids clothes and their furniture and their pram and their toys. The amount of waste I see on nature strips that could be donated to charities is very frustrating. Most of it is just a phone call away which is also easier than dragging it out on your nature strip.
Change your hair Most of us have had the same haircut or a similar haircut forever.
Change it. It will grow back or you can cut it if you don’t like it.
Stretch It Out We spend so much time sitting usually staring at our phones. We are all hunched over. Just add five minutes of stretching each day to your life.
This is one I really need to do in 2022.
So that’s a great place to end this weeks episode. All of these ideas are EASY to do and it will give you a sense of achievement.
This weeks episode is short and mostly an exert from Kane’s kids favourite Christmas Story:
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess
…So he paused. And the Grinch put his hand to his ear. And he did hear a sound rising over the snow. It started in low. Then it started to grow. But the sound wasn't sad! Why, this sound sounded merry! It couldn't be so! But it WAS merry! VERY! He stared down at Whoville! The Grinch popped his eyes! Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise! Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small, Was singing! Without any presents at all! He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same! And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?” “It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!” “It came without packages, boxes or bags!” And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! “Maybe Christmas” he thought, “doesn't come from a store.” “Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”
I suppose some of us still have an idealised vision of the festive season (even the Grinch), but to me the true importance of Christmas is simply to think only of others – how to bring the greatest happiness to others.
That is what is important about Christmas.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Kane's kid is a close/education contact of a COVID positive case, another kid from his kinder class.
We discuss what this means and what happens now.

The difference between wants and needs might seem obvious: a "want" is a thing you want to have.
Whereas a "need" is a thing you need to have.
People need water, shelter, food, and healthcare.
However as with everything in modern life it’s often more complicated than that.
Kane discusses this in this episode.

We often expect too much from our children (Kane and Matty included) when it pays to remember they are just exactly that children full of excitement and enthusiasm.
This week we take a page or two from W Livinigston Larned and his fantastic little speech/reading called FATHER FORGETS which deals with this exact issue.
It may be around 100 years old, but the message is still current.

The "Great Resignation" has been bandied around in the media recently. Basically on the back of the pandemic workers all over the world are rejecting their pre-COVID work patterns.
Many are unwilling to go back to the 9-to-5 office grind after having had a taste of working from home, or simply revolting against the idea that our lives should be defined by never-ending treadmills of career aspirations.
We discuss that this week and what it means to us.

Often our expectations don’t align with real life. The result is disappointment.
Remember when you were a kid and lined up for an hour to go on a ride at a theme park or when you lined up to meet someone you looked up to or even that restaurant you really wanted to eat at or movie you heard great things about.
It’s likely that you will have felt some level of disappointment with the end result as the experience that you had built up in your head was so much better than real life.
Disappointment is a normal part of life and everyone will experience it to some extent in their life.
In 2020 we canceled too many things. Too many birthday celebrations were virtual or drive-by. Too many holidays and other occasions were quiet, or done over zoom.
In other words, 2020 was a year marked by life’s disappointments.
2021 hasn’t been much better.
Hell August 4th this year was a huge disappointment.
In Victoria we went from having zero new COVID cases and expecting to get back towards COVID normal, to instead barely more than 24 hour later being back in lockdown.
It’s now 57 days later and yesterday we had over 1,400 new cases and our only real way out is vaccination. Talk about disappointing.
Personally I’d also sold a business not long before this and was looking forward to the little bit of free time that this would mean.
Yes, I’ve had plenty of free time rattling around my 5km radius for the allotted time, but it’s not really the same.
It’s not fun to be disappointed, but equally you should not let it linger.
While it’s absolutely OK to take some time in your disappointment, try not to focus on your negative emotions for too long.
Spending too much time and energy on your disappointment will have a detrimental impact on your mood and mental health.
Ask yourself, ‘Will this matter one year from now? A week? One month?’ A lot of the time asking this question will bring you back to reality.
Far too many people, when faced with disappointment, tend to attribute negative life events to their personal failings. They resort to obsessional self-blaming, as they feel ashamed or humiliated of not measuring up to the image of themselves they have in their own head.
As a result, they direct their anger inward, to themselves.
It may prompt them to say that they deserved it, that they were not good enough.
Other people, will direct their anger outward toward others, to people who didn’t fulfill their expectations. It will contribute to feelings of spite and bitterness.
Unfortunately, both emotional reactions keep the person stuck in a spiral of disappointment and often this disappointment can turn into a lingering sadness — a feeling of loss, of being let down.
So what are the alternatives?
You can also view the disappointment as something you can learn from. You can consider whether there is something you could do differently next time.
When we catch ourselves thinking negatively, we should redirect our energy and focus on positive solutions.
You may need to do a bit of positive self talk or some meditation or some journaling. You may need to kick the negative people around you to the curb for a while and just surround yourself with positive people.
A big one for me is to look after your physical health.
Whenever I have had something stressful happen or a big disappointment I’ve always tried to prioritise my physical health as it has a big positive effect on my mental wellbeing.
I generally do some level of exercise every day (literally 7 days a week) not because I’m some vain bastard (you should see my hair and facial hair at the moment) but because it honestly it just makes me feel better.
It’s a way I cope with life and the inevitable stress and disappointment in it.
It’s much healthier than the red wine and dim sim method I probably used 10 years ago.
The point is that experiencing disappointment is often outside your control, but the way you deal with it is not.
You need to find your way.
And if you can learn a way to deal with disappointment and emerge from it you build resilience in its wake.
You should always be grateful for any gift you receive, but let's be honest some gifts are simply awful.
We take a light hearted look at some of the shocking gifts we have received over time and Ryan's strategy to ensure this doesn't happen again.
We also hark back to a few previous Daddy Eats Last episodes including an update on spooning.

My sister had been going through her momento box which is basically keepsakes out folks had stored for the first 15 or so years of our life.
My sister had been showing her girls some of her things and she sent me through a story she wrote in Grade 3 (back when she would have been around 8 years old and I would have been about 10). It’s a story, but it actually happened.
It got me thinking about the parenting in the 1980s and today and taking what works from both.
If you can mix in some of the vast social and parenting knowledge we have in 2021 with giving your kids the room to try, fail, and try again while you support them 1980's style then you're well on your way to good parenting in my opinion.

Guts, resilience, grit these words are all in a similar wheelhouse with interwoven meanings.
To me each represent a form of perseverance and passion to achieve something. Maybe a long term goal.
We all have times where we seem to be lacking these characteristics.
We give up easily.
We shy away from challenge.
We are easily distracted,
We are disheartened when things go wrong and sometimes we have little sense of purpose or goals.
Grit or guts means you can make it through these tough situations, ideally with a smile on your face.
You have the confidence and perseverance to pick yourself up when you’re down.

Money is important for the essentials in life.
Do not misunderstand me. Money is not the goal of life nor the measurement of a happy life.
An unhappy person who gets rich will still be an unhappy person with money and sure I’d prefer to be Rich and Miserable than Poor and Miserable, but I’d take happy every day of the week.
People who have money but are unhappy sometimes seem ungrateful….but really they just have other issues that they haven’t resolved that keeps them unhappy.
Money is important for the essentials in life, but at a certain point more money won’t neccessarily make you any happier.
So what’s the magic number?
Kane discusses this and some tips to be financially happier in this episode.
We all have different definitions of happy and different things that make us happy.

We all go through periods of stress those times where you need to reassure yourself that everything is going to be okay. Lockdown is a big trigger for some people.
Kane has been through some extremely stressful situations….we all have!
Stress is unavoidable, especially in the modern world where we are so busy being busy and trying to do everything we all possibly can rather than subjecting ourselves to idle times.
The only universal thing about stress is, like I said before, that it is generally unavoidable.
Stress comes in all different shapes and sizes for every one of us.
It may be work stress
It may be business stress
It may be relationship stress
It may be financial stress.
It may be stress of a COVID lockdown or anxiety about getting the vaccine.
There are lots of different triggers for stress out there.
Over time the adrenalin released by stress hormones creates a continued state of vigilance with damaging physiological consequences.
Stress can actually kill you indirectly as it is known to lead to increased heart rate, cardiovascular problems, breathing difficulties and high blood pressure.
All key contributing factors to death.
So how can you counter stress?

Travelling by yourself is a little weird, but you shouldn't let that stop you from having the time of your life.
Travelling by yourself means not being able to rely on anyone else to get the most out of your trips. It means you are left to navigate your place in the world.
It's empowering, it's reflective and it's also a little scary.
We discuss our experience this week.

Odds are you have some mental barriers stopping you from reaching your full potential or at least being happier....because full potential is a bullsh*t term in my opnion.
The barriers are usually forms of:
One of hardest things is holding ourselves accountable for achieving our full potential. That's because when we do that, we are forced to make difficult decisions that we may not like.
Decisions that may take us into the unknown Decisions that may cause us to fail
Often we need to accept that things are not as rosy as we would like them to be and that we need to redouble our efforts or change our approach.
It's much easier to avoid the truth, and just continue as we are, but that's not going to help us in the longer term.
It's the unknown and failure that has stopped me reaching whatever my full potential is....but I'm trying every day to overcome them or at least quieten them.
Just keep trying your best.

Without enough sleep, your brain and body systems won't function normally. It can also dramatically lower your quality of life. A review of studies in 2010 found that sleeping too little at night increases the risk of early death. The inability to get to sleep or sleep well at night, can be caused by stress, jet lag, a health condition, the medications you take, taking work home often, too much screen time or even the amount of coffee you drink. Everyone's experienced the fatigue, short temper and lack of focus that often follow a poor night's sleep. An occasional night without sleep makes you feel tired and irritable the next day, but it won't harm your health. After several sleepless nights, the mental effects become more serious. Your brain will fog, making it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. You'll start to feel down, and may fall asleep during the day. Your risk of injury and accidents at home, work and on the road also increases. OK, so that's what happens when you don;t sleep and what may cause sleep issues.....so how do you fix that? How do you sleep better? I've had sleep issues in my life and only feel like I got on top of them in the last few years (maybe I'm just exhausted from kid life) While everyone is different what helped me was breathing exercises (aka meditation) while I was trying to get to sleep. So much so that last year I made my own sleep meditation.....it only goes for about 5 minutes, but if you're having any sleep issues then it may help you relax in bed. Often I'll be asleep before the meditation finishes.....but even if I'm not I'm usually well on my way to sleep. If you're having sleep issues you need to find what works for you. As such I'm sharing my sleep meditation with you now......sweet dreams from Daddy Eats Last.

Kane also has a big announcement.
When it comes to COVID-19 children have been having just as hard a time as parents and it’s important to try and remain engaged as much as possible despite how draining this is.
Kids are harder than a job, but they are the most important job.

Let’s face it – things are unusual right now. If you’re not a permitted worker, you’re stuck at home (and it's the safest place to be).
Fortunately, you can still stay social without actually being in the same room
Kane & Ryan catch up with Neo and Hendrik for their periodic Zoom Drinks session.
It’s of the utmost importance that we do our best to stay at home right now, especially in Victoria.
While staying in has officially become our civic duty, it leaves our social life a little worse for wear.
We catch up every month or so for Zoom Drinks just to see how each of us is doing.
It's even more important when we are all living through COVID-19

Melbourne is in Lockdown V2.0 and it is a little strange to see people all getting around with a mask on all of the time.

COVID-19 restrictions are back in Victoria (where Kane lives) but on the back of the interview with Creesh on his anxiety and stress Kane and the family had already got away for a week away from screens.
So this week Kane ponders:
How driving somewhere is different for kids to when he was a kid.
That everyone has a platform/microphone these days means there is so much noise.
Why getting away from the noise is important.
How to stop COVID-19 (no he doesn't have a vaccine).

The reason we have Creesh on is that last year he went through quite a rough patch in his life and he has very generously offered to tell us his story of what happened and when he knew he wasn't OK.
We discuss:
Remember to ask your friends if they are doing OK, especially if you think something is up.
Also remember we all need a bit of help sometimes. If you need help, ask.

We are living though a pretty unique situation (not unprecedented) at the moment with COVID-19 having the majority of the globe in lockdown.

What does it mean for our relationships?
What does it mean for our habits? Our routines? Our lives?
This week we talk about working long hours and guilt and exercise and drinking and whatever the new normal is to help you get through.

Most importantly we discuss how just showing a little gratitutde to anyone who helps you out will go along way to keeping sane and happy through this difficult time.

COVID-19 is spreading rapidly and we discuss that at the beginning of this episode, but also try and keep it lighthearted this week by discussing the little silly things we have all done at work. Well we all had, except Ryan.....until this week. You know the silly things like: * Replying all. * Sending an email or message about a person...to that person. * Sending an inappropriate email by mistake to someone.
Just the little careless, but not malicious things that we have all done in the workplace, usually through an innocent mistake.

Jerry Seinfeld hosts Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. In this weeks episode of Daddy Eats Last Kane chats with his 4 year old son as they drive to see some dinosaurs while he isn't feeling well. For decades, doctors have told parents to talk to kids as often as possible to help build speech and language skills. Apparently how parents talk to children may matter just as much as how much time they spend talking. Young kids sure do like to talk and this conversation is indicative of the conversations that take place multiple times a day in Kane's house. NOTE: Kane was recording the conversation before he started driving and was simply responding to his son in the usual way while driving.
