P Soupers - here's the second of my chat with Kerry Cullen. Kerry is an embodiment coach, facilitator, chartered psychologist and an expert in Polyvagal theory.
In this episode, Kerry unpacks polyvagal theory for us in a really accessible way. She starts with a description of polyvagal theory and then goes on to talk about its three organising principles and the work of Stephen Porges and Deb Dana. Kerry illustrates the organising principles by looking at her life changing diagnosis through the lens of polyvagal theory. And we also begin to consider its usefulness in the workplace.
And, P Soupers, there is so much that resonates with ACT, too.

P Soupers - here's the final part of my chat with Dr Ben Askew - he's an acting teacher, writer and director.

We explore the characters through the lens of ACT and the ACT Matrix - and find both depth and humanity. You'll also hear what Ben means when he says we're all playing on the same board, the pitfalls when we treat someone as a character and gender differences at work - again related to Lady Macbeth.
The icon photo for this episode is actor Jessica Kinsey she's in a workshop with Ben, exploring the character of Lady Macbeth with masks and I just love the intensity of Jessica's expression. You'll find Jessica's instagram in the shownotes.

We're back - it's 2024 and what a guest we have to start the year. Let me introduce you to Dr Ben Askew - he's an acting teacher, writer and director. He is the originator of the #ACTforActing project and is one of the UK's leading exponents of Theatre Analysis and the Laban-Malmgren System of Movement Psychology.
You'll hear about how he got into acting, when he first discovered ACT and how he realised it's potential - not only for actor wellbeing but also for character development. I loved this conversation and this is the first of three episodes with Ben. In the second episode we'll focus on the use of ACT in his work and in the third - we have a spontaneous chat about Macbeth - partcularly Lady Macbeth and we look at her behaviour and relationship with her husband through the ACT lens - how cool is that.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 37 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
For the Festive Season - we're looking back at some of our fabulous expert guests. Our first People Soup Rewind - is with Dr Kevin Teoh. In my Spotify wrapped for podcasters this year - this was the most popular episode - so it definitely deserves another airing.
Kevin is a Senior Lecturer and the Programme Director for the MSc in Organizational Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London. If you haven't listened to Part One you can catch it here He's also the Executive Officer, European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology. In part two of our chat we focus on Kevin's research and his thoughts on how workplaces are designed, organised and managed, what's known as the psychosocial context or the psychosocial working conditions - and what we're really trying to develop is a healthy workplace.. Such is Kevin's generosity in sharing his thoughts that this whole episode is like a takeaway banquet. To hear Kevin speak is really thought provoking and you'll hear him talk about his consulting approach, the workplace themes he's noticing, how organisations can sometimes see well-being as a tick box exercise and his simple recommendations for a step by step approach to organisational health.
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 36 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 34 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P-Soupers, this week - the chat with Dr Steve Jones - continues. We touch upon role modelling -in terms of the ripple effect when men disclose how they've sought support for their mental health or volunteered for psychological wellbeing training. We talk about how we must understand and respect the culture of an organisation when considering interventions, that's across the board and particularly for men's mental health. We also talk about getting outside - with school memories from two nothern lads, it's almost like an old hovis advert and we finish with a great takeaway from Steve.
Oh and by the way - Steve is a clinical psychologist, author of ACT made Yorkshire and creator and host of the shit shower and self care podcast.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 33 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P-Soupers, One of the wonderful things about having a producer - and specifically a producer like Emma - is that she's fizzing with ideas. When Emma mentioned Movember I immediately sent out a bat signal to friend of the show Dr Steve Jones and later that week - we met virtually over a brew to chat about men's mental health.
Why do men seem to find it more difficult to talk about emotions, stuff that makes them feel uncomfortable and instead tend to bottle it up? Well - we have a go at answering that - and reflect on some of the guests that Steve has had on his brilliant show - the Shit Shower and Self Care Podcast. We also touch on Steve's pride at his nerdiness, football, and superheroes.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 32 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
It's a bit different this week. It's a solo episode, a cup-a-soup if you like. What I want to do is build on the idea I shared earlier this year about having a separate sister podcast of PeopleSoup for leaders. One where they can tune in and really hear about bite sized practical skills that they can use to develop and evolve their own authentic leadership style. So I wanted to present my emerging idea to you all and hopefully get your views.
Think of this as a kind of, discussion paper if you like. I'd love to get your ideas and views on how ACT can support the development and evolution of authentic leadership.
I've called the episode Act and Authentic Leadership FM. And Authentic Leadership FM is the new holding name for what will perhaps be a spin off podcast.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 31 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P-Soupers, It's the second part of my chat with Dr Jill Stoddard, psychologist, author, TEDx speaker and podcaster. Jill's latest book is called, "Imposter No More: Overcome Self-Doubt and Imposterism to Cultivate a Successful Career".
In this episode we start with my review and then you'll hear about how the idea for writing the book emerged after a well received conference panel discussion. We move on to the different types of imposterism and how Jill recognised the importance of the work or life situation and how she could draw upon her expertise in contextual behavioural science to offer something different and useful. Wow - there's so much more that we cover including the experience of marginalised groups, recommendations for future research, the dedication in the book to Leann Harris and Jill's brilliant takeaway.

In this episode you'll hear how Jill's career in psychology evolved, how her prowess in watersports has developed, how she discoved ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and it's impact in her life. You'll also hear about the roots of the book, how she responded to a one star review and Jill's song choice - which also includes some special guest vocals.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 29 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
And P soupers - that little teaser at the beginning was from the very end of my chat with Andrew Sewell. We'd finished the formal interview and he reflected on my observation of his creativeness coupled with his doubt - when I was coaching him about 8 years ago. For me, hearing him talk about the shift in his demeanour and his sense of lightness was such a beautiful moment. And there's also a top tip there for any fellow podcasters who are listening - always hit record asap and leave it running, even when you've finished the formal interview.
In this second part of my chat with Andrew Sewell - we focus on his brilliant book - "The Overthinker's Guide to Life".
You'll hear how the seeds were planted and also find out how many self development books Andrew has actually read. He wanted his book to be different and I do believe he's achieved his mission, it's super useful - in fact we start the episode with my review.
You'll also hear about Andrew's approach to leadership coaching, how he asked for feedback on the draft book when he was less hampered by his "comparisonitis". You'll also hear his cracking takeaway, called the state of mind elevator.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 28 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P-Soupers - This week's treat for your ears is my chat with Andrew Sewell - he's a coach, an author and a fellow northerner.
In this episode you'll hear how Andrew became fascinated by psychology and personal development - and how his career path included teaching English as a foreign language, script writing in Hollywood and stand up comedy, as well as honing a career in copywriting. He's talks about leaving his career and how he worked with me as his coach at that pivotal time. He's since retrained as a coach, written a book and set up his company called - Overthinkers Anonymous.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 26 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P-Soupers - it's a special one this week - over the Summer, me and producer Emma experimented with a couple of live recordings, and our first courageous participant was Dr Sarah Swan - a verified rock chick who has written an extraordinary book called, "Coping with Breast Cancer, how to navigate the emotional impact throughout your journey". It's based upon Sarah's lived experience and her expertise as a clinical psychologist, particularly in the application of ACT.
So in this episode you'll hear how Sarah first got into psychology, the trials of getting onto the clinical training to the point when she was about to give up, how she discovered ACT and then the life-changing, devastating experience, when Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer. You'll hear my review of the book, Sarah talking about the writing process and how she kept going when she could barely see the screen through the tears. This truly is an extraordinary conversation, you'll also hear Sarah read an extract from the book and we finish off with her takeaways for those in workplace settings - as well as her song choice.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 18 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
Taster
This week, it's something a bit different. I was invited to be a guest on the Shit Shower and Shave Podcast by Dr Steve Jones. Now Steve is a friend of the show. He's already been on People Soup talking about his brilliant book, ACT made Yorkshire. Since then - he's got the podcast bug and launched his own, where with his guests he explores
What does it mean to be a man?
What does mental health mean to men?
How are we able to talk more about the stuff that we might otherwise keep tucked away at the back of our sock drawer?
Now our chat was spread across two episodes so I thought I'd share the second one - and just to flag - I use the f word on more than one occasion in the chat. I also reflect on my experience of being a gay man in the workplace, gay role models when I was growing up and how we're all still learning in the workplace.
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 17 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 16 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
What a privilege it was to speak to Dr Kevin Teoh. He's a senior Senior Lecturer and the Programme Director for the MSc in Organizational Psychology at Birkbeck, University of London. He's also the Executive Officer, European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology. In part one we chat about Kevin's career and his early decision that he didn't want to work in organizational psychology, that is, until a game changing experience in a law firm. Kevin is truly dedicated to supporting people at work and his research publications reflect that, particularly his work supporting those in health care. He's such a kind, thoughtful, reflective and humble man - I'm a big fan of Kevin, his work and his stance of exploring the systems and organisations in which people operate. I know you're going to enjoy this conversation.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 14 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P-Soupers, this episode is an encore, revisiting a favourite from the People Soup Archives, and it's a classic with lots of personal meaning for me and many others. There's much for us all to learn from Lou, through her personal values and what she role modelled for us. Lou's impact in supporting others through her art continues, even though she's no longer with us. Her light shines brightly.
Lou, I miss you. I think of you every time I see a blackbird in our garden, which is pretty darned often.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 13 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
P Soupers - I'm recording this introduction in a hotel room in Dublin, as I'm working near here tomorrow - as usual I'm under the covers to give you the best audio experience. It's actually a new bank holiday today in Ireland - honouring St Brigid. It was originally a pre-Christian festival called Imbolc, marking the beginning of spring. It signalled an end to the darkness of winter and ushered in a new season of hope and growth. St Brigid is one of the patron saints of Ireland and a pretty inspirational woman by all accounts.
Which all takes me to another inspirational woman - whose book offers hope and growth for us all. In this episode - called All That We Are - I chat more to Gabriella Braun about the writing process - how the book evolved and how she kept going when there was nothing left in the tank. You'll hear my review and also some snippets of reviews from the Financial Times and Marie Claire - you'll also find out how the former England Cricket Captain, Mike Brearley, was involved in the book.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 12 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
In this episode you'll meet Gabriella Braun - and part one of our chat lands on an auspicious day - it's the day when Gabriella's book - ALL THAT WE ARE - lands in paperback form - 2 Feb 2023.
Gabriella Braun is the director of Working Well, a specialist consultancy firm that uses psychoanalytic and systemic thinking to help leaders and teams understand the hidden truths of their behaviour at work.
In part one of our chat, you'll get to know a bit more about Gabriella, her childhood, what happened when she entered the world of work, how she floundered in a more senior leadership role and how the seeds for her work and her extraordinary book were planted.
You'll also hear Gabriella's views on the key organizational and leadership themes that have emerged over the course of the pandemic, and of course, her song choice.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 11 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
In this episode you'll hear Andréa Watts talking about the messy process of writing a book - and how her Collage Coaching Technique really helped her to get unstuck. Andrea uses collage to help people look inside and surface what's going on for them and how it might be impacting on their behaviour. Her book is called Collage as a Creative Coaching Tool - A comprehensive resource for coaches and psychologists. You'll hear all about the book - from the first sentence to the whole writing process and how she stayed motivated during the darker times. Andréa is an inspiration - and her passion shines through in the way she talks about her book.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 10 of People Soup. It's Ross McIntosh here. I've been floored by a heavy cold this week so instead of Part 2 of my chat with Andrea Watts (which will appear next week) we're revisiting the archives and sharing one of our most popular episodes, my chat with Alexandra Lechner. We talk about her ground breaking research on the challenges of building psychological safety in virtual teams. We cover the barriers and the enablers and it’s fascinating to hear Alexandra’s recommendations too.
Alexandra was a student on the MSc in Organisational Psychology at City, University of London and her research supervisor was Dr Jutta Tobias Mortlock, our legendary guest from the first episodes of this season.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 9 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
I'm so excited to share this conversation with Andréa Watts who uses collage to help people look inside and surface what's going on for them and how it might be impacting on their behaviour. In coaching we could imagine our clients are like an iceberg - there's a lot going on beneath the surface and through the development of her Collage Coaching Technique, Andréa allows her clients to explore and reveal their inner world in a new and innovative way. Andréa is an entrepreneur - Her business is called - Unglue You and her book is called "Collage as a Creative Coaching Tool - A comprehensive resource for coaches and psychologists". We'll speak more about the book next time - but first of all let's get to know Andrea - her career path - a bit of the science behind the approach- how she uses ACT alongside collage with her clients and of course - her song choice. Andrea is an inspiration - and you'll also find out why I've called this episode the girl beneath the blanket.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 8 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
IN our last episode I introduced you to Dr Hayley Lewis - Hayley is the founder of Halo Psychology - and as an occupational psychologist she provides expert and evidence based support for individuals, teams and organisations going through transition.
This episode is a right treat - as we get to hear first hand about Hayley's doctoral research and not just the outcomes but the whole darned process. Hayley approached her research with her characteristic drive, curiosity, authenticity, diligence, humour and much more. If you've ever wondered about the qualitative research process, thematic analysis and what exactly is a systematic literature review - then this is the episode for you.
You'll also hear about Hayley's research findings - they're not only informative but fascinating - she's the first to look at values in relation to female business ownership and explore the lived experience of female entrepreneurs. And there's a free business planning template takeaway too.

I'd like to introduce you to Dr Hayley Lewis. Hayley is the founder of Halo Psychology - and as an occupational psychologist she provides expert and evidence based support for individuals, teams and organisations going through transition.
In this episode - you'll get to know Hayley and she's very open about her career experience to date and what made her take the final leap to establish Halo Psychology. We chat about the motivation to take those leaps and how we present them to the world, her approach to her profession, psychological safety and a whole lot more. You'll also get to hear Hayley's song choice and the reason for her doctoral research topic. It was a joy to speak to Hayley and I hope you'll feel that from the conversation.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 6 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
This is the Second part of my chat with Mike Jones, he's the founder and chief at Better Happy - who enables organisations to develop healthy, motivated, high-performing managers, safe from burnout,
In this episode Mike talks about the better happy approach - and we chat about topics that are very important to us both - including our view that workplaces are optimally placed to make a meaningful impact on happiness and wellbeing and that culture can be massively influenced by leadership role modelling. We also talk about the impact of ACT on Mike and also why the ACT segments are the most rewarding part of the training he delivers.
He truly is a man on a mission to make a difference.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 5 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here and I've got a little festive trailer for you all. Please be warned this does include some of my legendary vocals.
P soupers - Happy Yuletide - and as we approach Christmas Time - Mistletoe and Wine - I want to say a huge THANK YOU to you for your support for the People Soup Podcast - whether you listened to one episode or the whole shebang - I'm extremely grateful . Looking back over the year - we've had some outstanding guest - Season 4 included some legendary voices and Season 5 has had a phenomenally strong start with some unique festive treats and I am indebted to all of our incredible guests.
Our advent offering was a three parter with Dr Jutta Tobias Mortlock - who is at the cutting edge of next generation mindfulness, breathing new life into the research on collective mindfuless, which can help teams and organisations reach new levels of awareness and collaboration.
Our Christmas present is a two parter with Mike Jones - who founded Better Happy to enable organisations to develop healthy, motivated, high-performing managers, safe from burnout - I worked with Mike to co-design a leadership programme using ACT which has gone down a right treat.
And our Christmas yet to come - is a special two parter with Dr Hayley Lewis - a fellow occupational psychologist, who talks candidly about her career and her doctoral studies. She's been described as a combination of a high beam torch, a guardian angel and a mountain guide to support leaders in the challenges they face. Hayley's research explored the psychological factors, enabling women who run micro businesses in the UK to succeed.
All in all a right Christmas treat. As ever we're looking to bring you insights into the world of work from Contextual Behavioural Science and evidence based psychology to help you Glow to Work a bit more often.
Over at the news desk - I have a fledgling project in the design stage at the moment - bringing you those short, reflective, cup a soup episodes that you love AND they'll be in a new audio home. More about that as it develops.
For now - if the festivities get too much - know that there's always a warm welcome, insightful chats and top tips over on people soup.
What's that I hear you say? What would I like for Christmas - well dear listener - what I'd love is a rating a review from you - whatever platform your on - it will help us reach more people with stuff that could be useful.
I wish you all a joyful and relaxing break - Bye for now.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 4 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
This is the First part of my chat with Mike Jones, He's the founder of Better Happy and I always leave a conversation with Mike feeling inspired and invigorated.
Better Happy enables organisations to develop healthy, motivated, high-performing managers, safe from burnout, as they say
"When your managers thrive, your people and business thrive."
In this episode he openly shares the ups and downs of his fascinating career - which involves two tours of Afghanistan, living in a Tibetan monastery and setting up his first start up - a cross fit gym. All of these experiences led Mike to create his highly successful business - Better Happy.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 3 of People Soup – it’s Ross McIntosh here.
This is the final part of my chat with Jutta, we could have gone on for days, but I'm sure she'll be back. Dr Jutta Tobias Mortlock, a social psychologist from City, University of London who is the co-director of the Centre for Excellence in Mindfulness Research.
IN this episode - Jutta describes more about her published research, the paper is called - "Extending the Transformative Potential of Mindfulness Through Team Mindfulness Training, Integrating Individual With Collective Mindfulness, in a High-Stress Military Setting" - and that's in Frontiers in Psychology. We find our what there is to learn from geese in terms of team work and how the collective mindfulness literature shows that this reliability or resilience in the face of collective stress for an organization is driven by two things, leadership and culture. We also touch upon the reputational damage to mindfulness, caused by the tone deaf way it can be introduced by some organisations. There's a heck of a lot for your listening pleasure in the next 30 minutes or so and I've called the episode Lessons from the Skein - which is the name fora flock of wild geese or swans in flight, typically in a V-shaped formation.

A very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 2 of People Soup.
In this episode I continue my chat with Dr Jutta Tobias Mortlock, a social psychologist from City, University of London who is the co-director of the Centre for Excellence in Mindfulness Research.
Together we explore the concept of collection or team mindfulness and Jutta shares how she has approached the development of the skill in her work with Naval cadets. We also consider how team mindfulness contributes to psychological safety.
Psychological safety in virtual teams was a topic we explored in Season 4 in an interview with one of Jutta's research students, Alexandra Lechner. You can find a link to that episode below.

A very warm welcome to Season 5 Episode 1 of People Soup.
Our first guest is Dr Jutta Tobias Mortlock, a social psychologist from City, University of London who is the co-director of the Centre for Excellence in Mindfulness Research.
Jutta's research explores next generation mindfulness, which means using the science of mindfulness at a collaborative, team level. In this episode you'll hear a bit about Jutta's career history, the breadth of her mindfulness exploration and the motivation for her current research. It was such a fascinating chat that I've decided to spread the joy and split the conversation over three episodes. Mindfulness is often misunderstood and I felt it was important to give it a thorough airing for the P-Soupers to reflect and digest.

Season 4 Episode 25
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 4 Episode 25 of People Soup.
This week - it’s a short cup a soup - called Interview Reflections & The Matrix. It’s a continuation of the previous episode - where I shared a particularly memorable and cringeworthy interview experience. In this episode - I’ll share some of the insights from our listeners, the P-Soupers, and their experiences of work interviews. And then I’ll introduce, or reintroduce the ACT Matrix - as a way to reflect on/and sort through the experience of that interview, to help me learn and grown.
You might want to use the matrix to reflect on an experience you’ve had, whether it’s an interview or anything else that’s been on your mind.

Season 4 Episode 24
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 4 Episode 24 of People Soup.
This week - it’s a short cup a soup and we’re going experimental. I was reflecting on the approach of Rich and Joe in last week's episode to self-esteem, and my mind went back to an interview I had whilst I was still in the Civil Service, over 10 years ago. It was for a senior role and it was, without a doubt - the worst interview I’ve ever had, cringworthy, terrifying, embarrassing and humiliating. I’ll tell you all about it this episode.
Why the hell am I sharing this - When I’d much rather just keep avoiding this memory. Well for three reasons - * It might resonate with some of you * You might me willing to share your worst interview experience with the P-Soupers * In the next episode - I’ll share how I can usefully reflect on that interview, using a tool called the ACT matrix - to help me sort my experience, and learn for the future.
If you'd like to share a terrible interview experience with the P-Soupers - you can email me at peoplesoup.pod@gmail.com - you can leave a voice note on whatsapp on 0044 7771 851118.
I can read out your experience without giving your name - or maybe you'd like to chose a pseudonym!

Season 4 Episode 23
I’m delighted to be back to share part two of my chat with Dr Richard Bennett and Dr Joe Oliver - both clinical psychologists - both legends in their field- they joined me on the show to talk about self-esteem at work. We began by unpacking the concept that’s so popular and Rich and Joe draw upon the evidence to illustrate how self esteem can be quite a narrow and restrictive concept. People might say - "I’ve got high self esteem" or "I’ve got low self esteem" and it can feel quite rigid and inflexible. It can limit our behaviour and impact our whole career and or life. The chaps present their alternative perspective of self-acceptance - which effectively captures the nuanced and multifaceted experience of being a human.
Their approach has is set out in their book - The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Self-Esteem: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Move Beyond Negative Self-Talk and Embrace Self-Compassion
And in this episode - there’s a treasure trove of insights and a tremendously generous take away.
NOW - those with heightened noticing skills - may have spotted the gap between part one and part two being released. I’d like to thank everyone for their patience - fortunately I’m fully confident that your patience is about to be rewarded.
The delay was a function of life - I’ve been working flat out on a mega project since March - designing and delivering coaching skills masterclasses to senior leaders in a global drinks company - needless to say - this has involved a heft dose of contextual behavioural science which has gone down a storm. It’s also involved a lot of European travel. Coupled with that - we moved house in May - and we couldn’t be happier with our new home - near Seville. It’s just been a tad busy and I’ve felt a bit exhausted and - to use a Spanish word - a la deriva - which means adrift. I now growing roots and feeling established and plans are gently afoot for new guests and topics.

Season 4 Episode 22
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 4 Episode 22 of People Soup.
I’m delighted to share part one of my chat with Dr Richard Bennett and Dr Joe Oliver - both clinical psychologists - both legends in their field.
They joined me on the show to talk about self- esteem at work - and I spent the first part of the conversation inviting them to share a bit more about themselves and their career trajectories - and I’m mighty glad I did. I’ve attended several trainings with the Bennett-Olivers and also some solo gigs from each of them AND I learned so much more about them in this conversation. Both of them were very open and their career trajectories have had some quite pivotal moments, where they explored interesting, career change opportunities. We also hear about their stance towards training delivery and of, course - their song choices.

Season 4 Episode 19
Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 4 Episode 19 of People Soup. Yes I'm back - after an unexpected break due to catching Covid, which knocked me out for a few weeks.
This episode a new type of episode - one aimed more at those who are workplace trainers or facilitators support adults in the development of new skills. It’s a short cup/a/soup called Helping. Equally, it could be useful for anyone contemplating the helping relationship.
Have you ever had the misfortune to fall over in public or witness somebody else taking a tumble.
It’s yes to both of those scenarios for me and in my experience - there’s a common theme which relates to the helping relationship. It's inspired by one of my cycling adventures, the work of Edgar Schein and a reflection from my friend and colleague, Rich Bennett.
Facilitators and trainers - I’d love to get your feedback on this episode - does this resonate with you and your experience? Would you like to see more episodes like this?

Season 4 Episode 18 - reissued from the People Soup archives
This episode is revisiting a favourite conversation from the archives - my chat with Louise Gardner, my ACT Auntie, your ACT Auntie, our inspiration.
Over the last few days I’ve been feeling a bit adrift and overwhelmed - the enormity of business planning, the complexity of my residency application, improving my Spanish. And as an aside, that’s nothing to do with Blue Monday, which is a nonsense created by marketing folk. And I’ve also been trying to think of a topic for the next episode, my mind was all over the shop, lots of possibilities, so for inspiration I decided to listen back to my chat with Lou.
Now that Lou is no longer with us - I miss her tremendously her fun, her love, her creativity, her courage, her energy. Many days when something absurd or bizarre happens I think, I’d love to tell Lou all about that, which I go ahead and do, in my head. I also told Lou about my award in her name - you can read more about the Louise Gardner Award in the show notes below. I’m so so proud to receive that award.
Once I’d listened to Lou I felt hugged, inspired, sad and grateful. So I thought I’d share it with you too, in case it helps. Through People Soup I try to take a stand for what’s possible at work, and show people how they can build that possibility for themselves. For me, what Lou illustrates and role models for us in this chat is her creative connection with her values which gave her direction. She also showed us the way she relates to her old friend, anxiety whilst courageously pursuing her purpose.

Hi there and a very warm welcome to Season 4 Episode 17 of People Soup.
In this episode it’s a welcome return for Big G - by popular request (Big G is my Dad, Gordon McIntosh). He reflects on his experience of the kindness of strangers and also his recent Chisi Award for Compassionate Inspiration.
You may wonder how this relates to adults in the workplace, well I think Big G is doing some important role modelling and I think we could all do with a bit more kindness at work. And I talk about this at the end of the episode.

Season 4 Episode 7
Hi P-Soupers, thanks for tuning in – this week it’s another cup-a-soup called Thanks for Asking. I want to build upon last week’s episode - GETTING CURIOUS - where I suggested one way we could ask colleagues about their experience of work - so in this episode - I’m going to answer that very same question based upon my personal experience.
My suggested conversation openers were:
“I’m curious how you experience this workplace, would you be willing to share?”
OR
“What’s it like to be you in this workplace?”

Season 4 Episode 6
P-Soupers – thanks for tuning in –this week it’s another cup a soup with me called 'Getting Curious' - I want to build upon last week’s episode - perspectacles - and really consider how we can get curious about how other people experience the workplace. As I said in perspectacles - we’re can’t hear each other’s internal soundtracks - we don’t know our colleagues work song - and I’m going to draw upon evidence from psychologist, Sarah Bonner and an organisation called Blueprint for All.

Season 4 Episode 5
P-Soupers, thanks for tuning in. This week it’s a cup-a-soup with me. I want to talk to you about perspective taking and how that relates to the world between our ears - if you could just try on these perspectacles please and read the bottom line of the chart....
I’m going to be having a go at exercising my creativity - experimenting with ways to illustrate my point, which is, that we all live inside our heads - and often - we can assume other people are in their with us - think like us and really ‘get us’.
In my work and life I constantly marvel that workplaces can function, relationships can happen and agreements can be made, because I reckon we can spend a lot of time just assuming that people are thinking just like us. And what’s going on in someone else’s head - can shape how they look at and experience the world and how they show up. And the same applies to us. I combine my thinking with a great exercise from a recent guest - Diana Hill.

Season 3 Episode 43
P-Soupers – thanks for tuning in – this week the tables are turned – and it’s me in the hot-seat for the Maintain the Design podcast.
People Soup is an award winning podcast where we share evidence based behavioural science, in a way that’s practical, accessible and fun to nourish your mind to flourish at work.
So this episode is a bit different – you’ll hear me being interviewed by Thato Mathebula and G-Man, from the Maintain the Design podcast based in Johannesburg. The guys were kind enough to send me their edit of the interview and I've made it into a two parter for the P-Soupers. The questions they asked gave me a great workout on a Sunday morning in January.
In Part 1- we talk about my work and the science that underpins it, some of the issues I work on, how I manage my own behaviour and I have a go a giving some advice to the younger generation.
I was really chuffed to be asked by the guys – their podcast is about creative culture and lifestyle in various industries and niches, such as business, art, music and fashion. They say “Not being limited in our topics of conversation is our vibe!” I really like their approach and the range of their exploration. We explore the golden thread of compassion that runs through it, chat about the frameworks Ann developed to support the reader, talk about the connection between body and mind and reflect that many people are sitting and working in different environments right now, like the kitchen table or even their bed.
Reviews are in for Part 1 on my chat with Ann. I think Shelly Prosko from Canada summed it up beautifully. She said on twitter

We also have a fascinating chat about his use of virtual reality. The conversation leads us up to a glimpse of his book –- Your Anxiety Beast and You: A Compassionate Guide to Living in an Increasingly Anxious World – which we’ll delve into much more in part 2.

Season 3 Episode 37
it’s a special episode – with three mini interviews. Way back in November 2020 – was the Association for Contextual Behavioural Science UK & ROI conference – a two day extravaganza of research, practice, insights and connection. Inspired by my pal Joe Oliver – I sponsored 4 students of organisational psychology to attend. In this episode you’ll hear from three of them – on their impressions of the conference, their standout moment and their own research interests. It was truly insightful to hear the variety and depth of their reflections.
For those of you who haven’t come across the podcast before – we aim to nourish your mind to flourish at work, using evidence based behavioural science. And we’d love it if you’d support us by subscribing, reviewing and sharing.
For now – get a brew on and have a listen to Sangita Bhalla, Alexandra Lechner and one student who preferred not to be named on their perspectives of the conference.

It's a cup a soup this week. In this 10 minute episode you can hear me reflect on how I've used the ACT Diary over a turbulent year. 2020 has certainly delivered for us all on both the uncertainty and anxiety fronts. I've found the diary particularly useful in ensuring that I attend to my own self-care in a whole host of contexts.
I'm looking forward to having the 2021 Diary by my side next year. Helping me check in on my values, track my progress and think how I want to show up.

Season 3 Episode 35
P-Soupers - welcome to Part 2 of my chat with Dr Jim Lemon. Jim is the Head of the Medical Paediatric Psychology Services in NHS Dumfries and Galloway. He's been using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with children and young people who have long-term health conditions, and their families. This work has also extended beyond individuals and families to using ACT in multidisciplinary clinics, with teams and on hospital wards.
We cover a lot of ground in our chat. Jim charts the evolution of the adoption of the matrix and the prosocial approach to change within families and within and between teams and service in the NHS. To hear his illustrative examples and the way he describes the impact and growth of the approach is part of who he is as a human, generous and humble. When you listen I'm predicting that you'll feel the potential of the approach too. After listening to Jim you'll probably want to sign up for his workshop at the ACBS UK & ROI Conference in November.

We cover loads more in our chat – you’ll hear about his workshop at the ACBS UK & ROI in November which is called "ACT for Long Term Health Conditions - Adjustment to Long Term Health Conditions: how Psychological Flexibility can help."

Season 3 Episode 29
It’s part 2 of my conversation with Dr Shane McLoughlin.
In this episode we really delve into Shane’s research on the impact of SMART Training – first of all – what is it? And secondly, the impact of SMART training on general cognitive ability in school kids. Listen on to hear us speculate on the potential impact of SMART for the working population as organisations become increasingly more complex and jobs become more cognitively demanding.
And we’ll finish with Shane’s song selection and a cracking takeaway.
This conversation was such a pleasure – Shane is open, honest, thought provoking and humble as well as being great fun.

Season 3 Episode 28
It was great to welcome Shane to People Soup. Blimey what an interesting fella.
He's currently a lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University after completing his PhD at the University of Chichester.
Shane's interested in exploring the potential in merging the fields of behavioural analysis and differential psychology. He really set me thinking about a whole host of organisational issues and my stance in the workplace.
Other topics we discussed include Shane’s experience of imposter syndrome, his preparedness to be wrong - spoiler alert – Shane says he’s been wrong about things many times. We also chatter about his willingness to share ideas with psychological communities outside of his own immediate discipline and his view of the primary function of a good scientist.
He also talks a little about his research on the impact of SMART training – which we’ll delve into more in part 2.
We finish with a tale of his sporting prowess which may or may not give us clues to his stance as a researcher.
This conversation was such a pleasure – Shane is open, honest, thought provoking and humble as well as being great fun.

Season 3 Episode 27
P-Soupers – this week we have an experimental episode – it started with a conversation with Louise Gardner – aka – my ACT Auntie and your ACT Auntie – where we were reminiscing about our childhood TV and in particular an animation called Mr Benn – which made us decide to record a conversation – well I say conversation – you may find it to be a gentle ramble – where we reflect upon one episode – Mr Benn and the Red Knight – and relate it to us as humans – particularly our values in life. As you might expect – there are several diversions along the way – including the legendary Mrs Slocombe from Are you being served?
Just in case you want to watch the episode of Mr Benn first - here's the link to the episode on YouTube.

Season 3 Episode 26
Or...All about Organisational Flexibility.
I’m starting with a quote from Walt Whitman today –
“I am large, I contain multitudes."
I think this quote encapsulates the complexity of both organisations AND the people within them
Here's part 2 of my conversation with Dr Annie Gascoyne. In part one we heard about Annie’s fascinating career history, how she’s worked in radically different organisations and she talked about pivotal moments, like going back to Uni and how she found herself in the surprising position of embarking upon a PhD.
In this episode we’re diving into that same PhD research - you’ll hear Annie introduce and expand on organisational flexibility as a concept and its component processes – which I think is highly relevant in these extraordinary times. I think you’ll find that organisational flexibility provides a useful and practical lens to consider the challenges that all organisations face.
In the shownotes you'll find two useful diagrams, one representing psychological flexibility and the other, organisational flexibility.

Season 3 Episode 24
Hey P-Soupers - I almost called this episode 'Help, my caveman brain's on fire' but I thought that might be a bit niche.
This is a check in with our previous guest, behaviour change expert, Registered Clinical Psychologist and author, Dr Dayna Lee-Baggley.
We check-in on a whole range of topics to support ourselves and each other in these challenging times.
Topics include:
In 10 year's time will we look back and be proud of what we did during Covid19? We can certainly be proud of our physical distancing.

Season 3 Episode 23
Hey P-Soupers! I wanted to present a simple and useful resource for these extraordinary times and I also bring a very special guest - my 84 year old Dad, Big G. We have a chat about Basic Psychological Needs Theory which states that people strive to satisfy three innate needs, namely autonomy, belonging and competence (in every area of life).
Some researchers called Deci and Ryan assert that needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are universal – they are essential, regardless of culture and life domain (Deci and Ryan, 1985b, 2000; Ryan and Deci, 2002).
Have a listen to hear how my Dad has been approaching his physical isolation and considering the ABC of Autonomy, Belonging and Competence. He's a role model for us all.
I also consider the values for the podcast moving forward. We're going to be focusing on Compassion, Connection and Collaboration - consider our next episodes to be The 3Cs Chronicles.

Season 3 Episode 22
It's Part 2 of my conversation with Dr Ian Tyndall. He's a cognitive-behavioural psychologist at the University of Chichester and is the head honcho of the Functional Behavioural Science Laboratory. In part two we delve into Ian’s research – we cover ostracism, SMART brain training for kids and adults which is fabulous work with enormous potential. It was also the subject of research by Dr Shane Mccloughlin who I'm hoping will be a future guest.
There is such a breadth of content here as Ian goes on to reflect on measures in contextual behavioural science, some research exploring the experience of homeless people in Milan and their current work looking at the rise in sexually transmitted infection in the over 45s. Ian and his collaborators truly impact on society. He even makes reference to two films – There’s something about Mary and The Mask. And to top it all – there’s a cracking takeaway.

Season 3 Episode 21
On Friday I had the great opportunity to visit the University of Chichester and speak to some of their Masters Students about ACT in the workplace and coaching. I was invited by Ian Tyndall, who is a cognitive behavioural psychologist and senior lecturer there, as well as running the Functional Behavioural Science Laboratory.
Of course I was keen to grab Ian as a guest and the conversation was fabulous. He's such a warm and generous man and can tell a story like no other. Listen on to hear more about:
We conclude Part 1 with Ian reflecting on the importance of being kind and compassionate in our collaborations with each other - and with ourselves.

Season 3 Episode 20
It's another 'on the road' recording. What do Flaxintosh do on the road? I’d come across a poem that I wanted to share with Paul – we often use poetry in our training – this one was a magnificent metaphor-laden masterpiece by David Whyte – in turn – later in the evening, Paul shared his favourite poem over dinner. That’s what real men do when they gather – forget the hunter gatherer – we read poetry to each other. #realmensharepoemsinpubs
Both poems fit so nicely with the theme that is fundamental to our training – the skill of noticing.

Have you ever felt stuck? Writer's block, the blank page, starting a new exercise or diet regime?
In this short episode I share my experience of restarting the podcast after our mid-season break in January. I found my mind was producing loads of content which hooked me away from getting back behind the mic, so thought I'd share my experience and use the matrix, to help me sort the jumble in my mind and get some clarity to help me move forward.
This will form part of an occasional series - #thematrixsessions - where I and others will use the matrix on an issue or area of life.

Season 3 Episode 18
P-Soupers - it's the second part of our festive special and have I got a treat for you. Have a listen to my conversation with Dr Dayna Lee-Baggley. Dayna is a Registered Clinical Psychologist. She holds an Assistant Professor appointment in the Department of Family Medicine and cross-appointments in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Dalhousie University and an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Department of Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Saint Mary’s University. Dayna also works as a Clinical Health Psychologist at the Nova Scotia Health Authority (CentralZone) for the Multi Organ Transplant Program and as a Trainer and Researcher of the Behaviour Change Institute.
Listen on as we hear about the time when Dayna discovered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and how she applied it in her own life. Dayna also has some great advice for those of us considering behaviour change in the new year, spoiler alert, a lot of those goals we set are actually outcomes. She also busts the myth about the time it takes to form a habit and explains the difference between our cave dweller mind and our frontal lobe. This is the reason that our healthy habits can fall away at holiday time because we're using our frontal lobe too much and our cave dweller mind can just step in and take over when we’re surrounded by a family sized tin quality street and crisps.
This episode is packed with top tips and insights from Dayna's work. Dayna has great skill in translating research knowledge into things that people can do in their day to day lives to reduce suffering and increase joy.

Hey P-Soupers - it's the first part of our festive special. My conversation with artist and illustrator - Louise Gardner. What a joy it was to speak to Louise.
We hear about her journey as an artist - which started out at a young age when she would draw characters on paper that her Dad would bring home from work. We also discover how Louise discovered ACT and how she drew a route map to reflect the 8-week course from Russ Harris - and what that led to!
We chat about our belief that everybody has the potential for a creative outlet and the transformational impact of ACT in her own life. There's a brilliant takeaway too.

This is a special edition – a hearty soup for you to enjoy – It’s my interview with Dr Becky Quicke – a clinical psychologist who specialises in supporting women through the perimenopause and menopause – particularly around the associated anxiety – she uses Acceptance and Commitment therapy as an essential part of her approach.
Becky empowers women who experience anxiety during the menopause to slow down, let go of worries and live with more joy and ease. Her on line courses teach psychological flexibility and compassion skills so women can navigate this transitional phase of life with confidence, care and clarity. In addition, she helps women practice menstrual cycle awareness during perimenopause (the phase 5-10 years before menopause) so they can consciously pave the way towards a more emotionally empowered menopause. It’s a time for women to unravel and by teaching women these skills, Becky guides them back to their own innate wisdom and power so they can thrive in life and go from fear to fulfilment.
We also talk about Becky’s career path, some big decisions she’s made and there is one of the best takeaways we’ve ever had.

Season 3 Episode 15
It's Part 2 of my conversation with Suzanne Tarrant who is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Staff Psychological Wellbeing at the Hywel Dda University Health Board.
We focus on the green health agenda and begin by talking about the culture of taking breaks in the NHS. SPOILER ALERT: breaks are not necessarily seen as a typical part of a day in many NHS roles.
Suzanne has always valued her connection with nature and describes herself as someone who always retreats to the sea when in need of solace. In her role in Hywel Dda, Suzanne has secured approval from the Executive Board to develop a strategic framework for green health that is truly supportive of health and well-being. They have also established a green health network as well as a green health group at one of their district hospitals, where staff from across the site are developing a courtyard garden with support from community groups.
We also talk about Suzanne's growing involvement with Reconnect in Nature where they are developing a long weekend nature packages - in the first instance, for Doctors. The aim is to provide the opportunity to start to recharge and recover whilst also developing perspectives and tools that can be taken back into the workplace and be woven in to their working lives.
To finish - there is a second takeaway from Suzanne about how we can build our relationship with nature in our own unique way as well as making it a reciprocal connection.

Season 3 Episode 14
It's the first part of my conversation with Suzanne Tarrant. Suzanne is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist & Head of Staff Psychological Wellbeing Service for Hywel Dda University Health Board in Wales.
Hear about Suzanne's background and career as well as the establishment of the Staff Psychological Wellbeing Service. Suzanne explains how they've incorporated ACT and the impact of the training. I love Suzanne's interest in what works and what can truly make a difference in the long term.
Suzanne also shares some fascinating aspects of their approach to the training, including the delivery model, how they encourage attendance and refresh the skills.
We finish part one with a brilliant takeaway on how to take a biophilic approach to your breaks at work - even if they're micro-breaks.
The wonderful photo of Suzanne was taken at a recent Reconnect in Nature event in the woods where she was leading a nature connection session. The photo was taken by Mike Erskine (one of the founding directors of Reconnect in Nature and a filmmaker)

This is a bonus episode. Last week I anticipated the train journey from Newcastle to Hexham. This week you can join us on the actual journey. It's the perfect antidote to the modern, busy world - you'll hear the train and snippets of conversation from me and Paul - with no particular aim in mind. Our first attempt at slow radio.

Season 3 Episode 12
Welcome to the second part of our recording on the road. In this episode you'll hear me and my ACT pal, Dr Paul Flaxman, chatting in the lobby of Motel One in Newcastle.
We reveal our big news for 2020 - an international research collaboration and opportunity for us to flex and adapt our protocol for the workplace.
I work with Paul at City, University of London where we have redeveloped and refined a training protocol for Psychological Well-being in the Workplace. The training has a strong evidence base and we've spent time over the last year delivering Training for Trainers, to enable the protocol to be shared more widely and reach more people. Next year we go international.
We finish with an anticipation of our train journey from Newcastle to Hexham - where we were going to be working with some psychologists from across the NHS in the region. That particular train line has some personal meaning for me as it goes through my first workplace, my home village, passed my schools and my birthplace.
We also recorded the actual train journey and I'm going to make that into a separate bonus episode - our first attempt at slow radio.

Welcome one and all. It's another first for People Soup - a recording on the road. In this episode you'll hear me and my ACT pal - Dr Paul Flaxman, on the way to a meeting with some NHS legends up in Northumberland. We chat on a train and a hotel lobby in Newcastle.
I work with Paul at City, University of London where we have redeveloped and refined a training protocol for Psychological Well-being in the Workplace. The training has a strong evidence base and we've spent time over the last year delivering Training for Trainers, to enable the protocol to be shared more widely and reach more people.
It's like a Flaxintosh performance review. We cover some of the gigs we've done this year, how the ACT in the Workplace training protocol has evolved and key moments & developments that have stuck in our minds.

Season 3 Episode 9
This week – it’s a cuppa soup. A short episode – the lighthouse – it combines a poem I learned at school with a reflection on how we can keep sight of the things that give us meaning in our working lives. We call these qualities that give us meaning, our personal values. It can be difficult, scary and revealing to consider what gives us purpose in our work. To use these qualities as a guide for our behaviour & decisions can be challenging too. I consider my lighthouse – to be beaming out my personal values – when the sea is calm I can see the lamplight but in turbulent times they can disappear.

Season 3 Episode 8
A short episode where I draw upon one of my favourite films to illustrate how I can get tangled up in the drama of the courtroom in my mind - I'm captivated by the cut and thrust of the arguments for the prosecution and defence. turns out I'm so captivated by their arguments that I'm not noticing the real world and how I'm showing up.
Hear a question that can help get us untangled.

Season 3 Episode 7
Well P-Soupers - the weeks are fair flying by. This week - using lemons - I try and show how we can develop stories that may impact in unhelpful ways on how we show up in life. This episode also introduces a little bit of Relational Frame Theory (RFT) which underpins Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) but don't be alarmed by the acronyms as it's really all about lemons.

Season 3 Episode 6
This episode could also be called, our inner and outer world. It presents a short exercise intended to illustrate the difference between the physical world, the world we experience with our five senses and our inner world.

Season 3 Episode 5
The conversation continues with a focus on how to introduce the concept of skilfully relating to the content that our minds can produce, which is also known as cognitive defusion. We also how Jaimie uses her experience of the context of the ballet world in a way that is both curious and cautious - she's keen not to make assumptions based upon her own experience. Paul reflects on the embodied nature of the new protocol, many people we train report feeling quite disconnected with sensations in their body. He also reveals how the Flaxman Manoeuvre was born. Leo, continues to reflect on the impact of the training on his life in his characteristic thoughtful and insightful way.

Season 3 Episode 4
That's quite a title and this is quite a two parter. I was lucky enough to have the chance to discuss ACT in the workplace with Dr Paul Flaxman, Jaimie Persson and Leo Hepler.
We explore the delivery of training based upon Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in the workplace from three different perspectives. We have Paul Flaxman – together we redesigned an ACT in the workplace training protocol, which was then adapted by our colleague and pal – Jaimie Persson – to deliver to the students at Canada’s National Ballet School. One of the students was dancer – Leo Hepler – our star guest – who came on the show to reflect upon his experiences of receiving ACT training.
In part 1 we talk about the ballet school and ballet company environment and hear how Jaimie (as a former student of the school) presented a compelling case to the Director – Mavis Staines – known for her progressive approach to education – to introduce the students to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. We also hear what Leo took away from the training.

Season 3 Episode 3
What fun we had recording this episode! There are two firsts, our first live recording with an audience and our first mash-up with Maddy Scott - one of the co-hosts of the Freaking the F Out Podcast!
After sharing our freaks of the week we go on to share the first mention of Imposter Syndrome that we found in the literature in 1978. We give some example from our lives and them move on the consider what we can do about it. There are some tips from behavioural science as well as a sense of collective compassion - most of us are in the same boat with this experience of feeling like a phoney.

Season 3 Episode 2 I was so pleased to have Guy as a guest - he's such an inspiration. This episode is packed with goodies. We discuss The Sleep School's approach to working with organisations, tracking devices and Guy generously offers a bumper selection of takeaways. I also get some personal advice on my coffee consumption which might be useful to more of the P-Soupers.

Welcome to Season 3 Episode 1. It's the first part of my conversation with Dr Guy Meadows - co-founder and clinical director of The Sleep School.
We hear about Guy's background in sleep research and insomnia and what led to the formation of The Sleep School. It's fascinating to hear the series of events that began in the sleep laboratories of Imperial College. There's a glimpse into some of their research and an insight into the behavioural science behind The Sleep School.
Guy noticed that "the more people struggle to get to sleep the more awake they became". Once he discovered Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), everything began to slot together.
Bonus Episode!
Consider this a bridge to Season 3 of People Soup. As there's been a natural break I've decided it's the ideal time to launch a new season. I talk about the death of my beloved Mum and preview some of the guests I've got lined up for Season 3.
The first one will drop next week - an interview with Dr Guy Meadows - co-founder and clinical director of The Sleep School.
Season 2 Episode 23
Here's Part 2 of my conversation with psychologist, Sarah Bonner.
We focus in on Sarah's research into the experience of black women in the creative industries, it's called "Tapping into Black Magic."
Sarah's brings her research to life using words from her research participants. She articulates the issues in a really clear and accessible way and talks about individual differences. The issue for us all is can we recognise what we do when we notice a difference - how does it show up in our behaviour?

Season 2 Episode 22
What a guest I've got for you P-Soupers! Meet Sarah Bonner, organisational psychologist.
In part 1 - Sarah tells us a bit about her career history, including a major change of direction. She also talks about her current role at Three Minute Mile. To finish there is a glimpse of Sarah's extraordinary research which explored the experience of black women in the creative industries. You can hear all about the research in the next episode.
Season 2 Episode 21
This week I was in central London with my ACT pal, Paul Flaxman - delivering a 2 day train the trainer workshop for our ACT in the workplace protocol.
We finished the whole event with a poem from David Whyte - Start Close In. I thought the P-Soupers would like to hear it!
Season 2 Episode 20
Here I reflect on the Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg. Greta has taken action on an issue that she cares about deeply. I draw upon the work of Stephen Covey to consider how we can take action on issues that we're facing at work. There is definitely always one thing that we can control in our circle of influence - that is - how we show up.

Season 2 Episode 19 This week, I welcomed our first guest of 2019 - a fellow organisational psychologist & talented researcher, Lauren May. Lauren presents her research on the lived experience of people at work who are also caring for loved ones with dementia. It's a great piece of research and a fascinating insight into the issues. The fact that many people who work also have caring responsibilities needs so much more exposure to enable us all to appreciate different situations and develop appropriate responses.

Season 2 Episode 16
Here I share a story from my life - about how I've worked with values. It's become quite popular in group training so I thought it was the right time to share it with the P-Soupers.
I talk about how I translated a value into action and share the associated unhelpful content that came up for me. I give some tips on how to shift the relationship with the thoughts that can be unhelpful and make values a more prominent guide to our action.

Season 2 Episode 14
For our Christmas Special let's dive into positive psychology with a two part-er featuring our friends, Jonny and Joshua from Bailey and French.
Bailey and French are pioneers, they bring evidence based positive psychology to organisations to facilitate great performance and wellbeing. I was lucky enough to spend some time with the co-founder and lead consultant, Joshua French and business consultant (and friend of the show) Jonny Line.
After our traditional introductions we hear a bit about Joshua's background and the conversations that led to the formation of Bailey and French. We also hear more about their approach to bringing positive psychology to organisations and their individual research interests - peak experience moments and psychological capital. We finish with a reflection on some memorable training moments.

Season 2 Episode 12 The conversation with Rafael Dubois continues.
A common theme that he encounters with players is confidence - which is often misunderstood. We also talk about how they have established a coaching culture at the Blue Jays and created an environment where it is safe for players to talk to a coach without feeling vulnerable. We finish with a brilliant takeaway as Rafael introduces non-negotiables!

Season 2 Episode 11 I loved this conversation with Rafael. We chat about his career path and his purpose - which he discovered at an early age, he loves listening to people. We talk about the context he brings to his role and his stance in his role as a coach. You'll also hear about the complex structure of the Blue Jays - there are 9 teams and there are coaches for pitching, catching and hitting! Hope you enjoy it!

Season 2 Episode 9
Here's the first part of my chat with Dr Paul Flaxman and Dr Joe Oliver a couple of weeks ago. We talk about their journey into ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and what attracted them about the approach. They go on to speak about the impact of ACT on their own lives and how they use it in their work. We finish Part 1 with some reflections on the ACT Matrix.

Season 2 Episode 8
What an absolute delight to spend some time chatting with Nicky Hemmings - lead psychologist at Soma Analytics. We discussed evidence based psychology in the workplace and the very new Evidence Based HR Forum set up by Nicky, MaddyScott, Craig Tindall and Professor Rob Briner.
Nicky talks us through the evolution of the Soma App - called Kelaa - how people interact with it - the data it can produce for organisations and the wider support they provide. What I particularly love is the story of how Soma came about through an experience with a friend of the co-founders Christopher Lorenz and Johann Huber.
We reflect on contributing to improvements to mental health at work and Nicky introduces the frog - which is used across the team at Soma - to help them get stuff done. Nicky also gives a glimpse of the research that Soma will be publishing soon - showing improvements across stress, sleep and well-being through use of the Kelaa app.

Season 2 Episode 7 Have a listen as I have a go at reflecting on my values over a period of four days. This exercise is based upon an approach developed and described by Jonny Line in Episode 2 (Season 2). Mike's journey into ACT - which included a bold trip to Nevada in the early days; How he uses ACT in his personal and professional life; How he uses ACT with high performers in the City.
He has also developed a takeaway especially for his appearance on People Soup and has a cracking, client generated metaphor which we could all use.

Season 2 - Episode 5 Why do I talk about the skill of noticing so much? Listen on to hear why noticing is so important - both in terms of how we're showing up in the world through our behaviour and being aware of what our mind is producing in terms of thoughts, emotions, memories and urges.
I then move on to different ways that we can strengthen the skill of noticing. I also respond to a question from this week from a workshop participant who asked if I was trying to create a workplace full of happy robots!

Season 2: Episode 4 Ross presents some evidence on gender differences in organisations. Amongst other findings he covers 'Think Manager Think Male' and the glass cliff (where women can be put in precarious leadership positions). Drawing upon a Harvard Business Review he agrees that the route to leadership for women and other minorities is more labyrinthine than a ceiling. He finishes with a paper that suggests it's time to introduce positive discrimination to accelerate gender equality. The take away is a clarion call - to flag micro-behaviours - both good and bad.

Season 2: Episode 3 In this episode I talk about mental health at work - particularly in relation to men. I share some developments on the podcast and look at my wobble over this last week. I then focuses on one research paper. The research showed that when men experience psychological distress they are two times more likely to seek support if a friend or family member has shared their own experience of seeking help.

Season 2 Episode 2
In this episode I speak to my friend, Jonny Line, who is an exciting new voice in organisational psychology.
Jonny begins by reflecting on a particular skill that he draws upon in a variety of scenarios at work and then considers his own experience of using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).
He describes the three step approach he has developed to support himself in noticing when he's expressed his core values of self development, creativity, fairness and supportiveness.
He also sets out a way in which we can potentially enhance our efficacy in expressing what's important through turning our values on ourselves, based upon a model of positive social action. The challenge from Jonny is "how can you live out your values with others by turning them in on yourself."
Jonny's ideas have taken my own practise to a new level so I'd really encourage you to have a go.
We also consider what our own personal theme tunes might be and there is a chance to win one of three sets of values cards.
We're so proud of this episode here at People Soup - it really brings together some of our values around the creation of the podcast, which include being of service to our listeners and guests, and creating a space of connection, friendship, love, learning and fun.

Episode 14 This is part two of my conversation with friend and fellow organisational psychologist, Maddy Scott. We talk about how we've used ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) in our lives. Maddy talks about her mindfulness practice and how she introduced values on a family holiday leading to an adventure on the high seas (grand canal). I also talk about my values in relation to sharing and training skills in ACT.
We finish with an invitation to have a go at an exercise - a suggestion for a playful way on how to practice bringing values to life using the list in the episode notes at www.rossmcintosh.co.uk
Episode 13 I'm in conversation with my very first guest - friend and fellow organisational psychologist, Maddy Scott. We're both students and practitioners of ACT. ACT is the acronym for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which we use in our work in organisations and in coaching.
Here we talk about what first caught our attention about ACT, how we got hooked and what we'd recommend in terms of resources for those who'd like to find out more.
I'm pretty pleased with how this has turned out so let me know what you think.
Episode 12 Here I present some of my own research based on interviews with senior public sector leaders. In my research I explored the ways in which they fulfilled their leadership roles and experienced organisational politics - all through the lens of psychological flexibility.
Psychological flexibility is something that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) aims to strengthen. It's made up of six processes. In this podcast I represent those processes with the triflex.
Listen on and see if you can spot the processes - be present; do what matters and open up - in your own workplace behaviour!
Episode 11 It's a bit different this week - I've had a few requests for a mindfulness practice recording so hear it is - a mindfulness meditation of the body and breath. There's a brief introduction then we're straight in to the exercise. Give it a go and let me know how you get on!
Episode 10 In this episode I use behavioural science to explore the decline in my sketching and cartooning activity and give some top tips on how to apply the same techniques to work and life in general. I commit to publishing a sketch or cartoon every day for the next 30 days on instagram and twitter - so you can follow my progress.
The key questions I recommend to use to explore something that you've stopped doing at work that matters to you are as follows:
What's important to me about X or Y? Why does it matter to me?
What's my mind saying about X or Y?

Episode 8 Here Ross aims to strengthen the case for developing the skill of present moment awareness or mindfulness. He does so by revealing the two gears of the mind - the thinking gear and the sensing gear. Hear how we can get stuck and exhausted in the thinking gear and simple ways to access the sensing gear.
Episode 7 Do you have a relationship in the workplace that could be improved? In this episode Ross presents real life examples and techniques from psychology to allow you to have a go at changing your behaviour in a tricky workplace relationship.
Episode 6 Are you 'always on'? Ross talks about work recovery and draws upon research by Professor Sabine Sonnentag. He shares 4 top ingredients for effective recovery activities and also recommends that you consider what your personal values are in relation to your leisure time to provide motivation and direction.
Episode 5 Ross talks about the idea of exploring and reconnecting with what's important to us at work. He shares what matters to him as his career evolves and how he is using these qualities as a guide for his behaviour - recounting his nervousness about phoning a bookstore in Berlin! He finishes with a couple of practical questions and recommendations for how to consider your own values at work.
Episode 4 In this episode Ross illustrates the way our stories can limit our behavioural repertoire and provides a tip on how to change our relationship with our own stories. He also provides a recommendation for expanding the range of options from the behavioural menu. The character of Cruella de Choice is also introduced.
Episode 3 Ross introduces a leadership lesson from pop that includes some top tips on modelling. He also updates on the evolution of the People Soup Podcast and the philosophy behind the name.
Episode 2 Here I reflect on how our thoughts can influence our behaviour - and perhaps stop us doing things that are important to us.
Episode 1 We can spend a lot of time on autopilot - research by 2 Harvard University Psychologist found that we can spend about 47% of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we’re doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes us unhappy (Killingsworth & Gilbert, 2010)
“A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind,” Killingsworth and Gilbert write. “The ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement that comes at an emotional cost.”
