'She is the First Female Mayor elected to the Upper Lachlan'.
Pam Kensit migrated from Ireland to Australia 32 years ago. She lives on a rural property with husband David, called 'Moorabinda', just outside Crookwell, NSW. An active community member and volunteer, she has raised 2 children and a menagerie of pets including Audrey and Abbey.
An acclaimed artist, Pam exhibits every 3 years in Sydney and until recently would tend to the farm, paint in her studio, muster sheep or spend time in the garden.
These days Pam makes the 35 minute trip into Crookwell to attend to duties bestowed upon the elected Mayor of the Upper Lachlan. Having sat on Council for a number of years, she has invested her time in standing committees that ensure the community interests are well represented. Pam says one of the first items on her agenda as mayor will be to lobby the federal government for improved communication systems in the bush.
2022 saw 5 female councillors elected to Council, with 4 men joining them to collaborate on the priorities of ensuring the farming and agriculture industries are supported. 2500 kms of roadway need to be maintained and upgraded so vital transport of stock and supplies can be transported to other areas and the city.
Also on the agenda is keeping the community groups like CWA, Rotary, The Mens Shed, Probus and View Club, who lobby for social change and support vulnerable residents thriving. Alongside Pam is the power house, Deputy Mayor, Mandy McDonald, which is proving to be a force of nature that matches any weather event.
Pam and I end this interview by cooking up tasty ideas for the Crookwell Potato Festival that celebrates 200 years.
Over the years, Pam has developed strong connections to resettled Ireland migrants and regularly attend events that connect those who left during The Troubles in Northern Ireland, which spanned three decades between 1960's-1998.
With a slight accent and an infectious laugh, Pam warmly welcomes her community members to come and 'chat' to her in chambers. It was a privilege to visit her farm during sheering season, laugh over lunch looking out on the expansive garden and whilst deep in conversation we get to the heart of why she put her hand up for the top job.
Pam is also a published author and during the 2020-21 lockdown sat down to write her latest book Poems Outside The Fold. She is best known for her novel 'Dust to Mud', the contribution of a bush community to WW1.
Pam is described by her colleagues as a natural born leader who does the doing. She is known as a collaborative leader, patient and grateful for the opportunities the Australian country life has given her.
Please reach out to Pam with any comments or questions

Women Should Be Two Things : Who She Wants and What She Wants.
There is no doubt the ground swell of female voices stepping forward to contribute ideas and innovation is growing. No longer are women prepared to be silenced, stay silent or remain quiet when the systems and rules fail to take into consideration the issues and concerns of women and girls.
This is the first in a series of interviews with women who have stepped into roles of representation at Local, State and Federal Government.
Today I am speaking with Cr Laura Cowell, of Ward E, who as a local resident in the Sutherland Shire openly shares why she believed she was the right person for a seat on Council. Laura shares her experience and commitment to creating a safer, equal and well serviced sector of the local government.
Representing her community, residents and sporting arenas, Laura says the role was a steep learning curve that she is quickly embracing so she can make a difference in the next 2 years and 9 months.

'There's Injustice, Corruption and it's Archaic.' - Grace Orah describes the current Family Law system as the opportunity to continue the abuse she was subjected to in her relationship. A process that places children in the middle of parents in conflict and on a battleground where no one wins.
Australian Family Law is in a national crisis, with jurisdictions failing to take responsibility and be held accountable for the safety, security and sanity of parents and children.
The Child is the play book for navigating the Family Court of Australia. Written from the experience of a de-identified author with the hope other parents who find themselves unable to afford the extraordinary costs of a lawyer, can educate and arm themselves with the tactics and games played inside and outside, the walls of a court room.
https://lnkd.in/guxGvmR6 Available on Amazon for $7.99
The Child is not only one woman's story but the guide to the processes, rules and strategies she was subjected to by her child's father's lawyers. Described as 'Repugnant and Neglectful' this mother became the enraged lioness you'd expect. Forced to defend baseless lies that lacked evidence, Grace shares how she continues to recover from these false allegations and the impact of prolonged proceedings that do not hold the abuser accountable.
"A new Family System! (Note the word Court is removed!), that cradles our children, uses words that heal, supports victims, offers peace and guidance, brings justice and leaves no one financially destroyed!" #oneforall
If you are experiencing domestic abuse, violence, post separation or legal systems abuse you can reach out for support to 1800 RESPECT.
Please note our guest on this podcast has been de-identified for her safety and that of her child. Currently, Section 121 of the Family Law Act prohibits the publication of any specifics that are liable to identify a party to a family law proceeding. However, the provision has attracted criticism from those who say it leads to lack of transparency and accountability in the family court system.
This means that the general community does not know a lot about the processes and procedures involved in the family law system. People are also often unaware of the factors that courts take into account and the decisions that judges make.
Some journalists feel that the provision does more harm than good. Author and journalist Jess Hill in her 2019 book about family violence See What You Made Me Do, argues that Section 121 ‘allows bad behaviour within the system to go unchecked.’
This is the story of the Powerful Vs Powerless.
In this International Women's Day episode, Pip speaks with Bron Williams, The Bias Specialist. This is a podcast for the men who are looking for strategies and the women that are supporting them. Suicide is preventable, it requires a conversation that meets men and young boys where they are at in that moment.
This podcast is busting the myth that men bottle things up. In this series you'll find people like Matty John, a father, son, coach and friend who has lived experienced, and combined his pain and passion for photography to raise money for Life Line.
His image (in the tile) captures a lone walker on a Newcastle Beach, mirroring the feelings of isolation, loneliness and what sometimes seems like the long walk of recovery. It was recently exhibited and sold.
As well as being committed to being there for friends and his players in the footy arena in their time of need, he is finding connections within his community. After loosing his best mate to suicide, hear how a random afternoon at the beach captured the last priceless image of a Life Saver that his family will treasure forever.
Men are facing a national crisis. The Suicide Gap is a concern for the women in their lives. We must come together, support the services doing the work and share the personal stories of the struggle.

It's been 1 year to the day. It's taken me 52 weeks to reinstate the elements of empowerment into my daily life.
Having done the work previously, I gathered the shattered shards of my confidence and put them back together like a puzzle, one day at a time. Along the way I created 52 episodes of insightful and inspirational conversations with the incredible people who have become the fibres in my fabric of truth. Friends, mentors, practitioners and coaches, who from their own experiences, help those who want to be helped.
Like you, I have come to accept that 'life challenges' strike at any time. Some you see coming, others side swipe you from out of the blue, calling on every fibre in your being to weather the storm.
What I learnt was how to shut out the world's mess, control what I can and be who I need to be, for myself and as a consequence have the capacity to be that someone for others.
Empowerment is a switch only you have. So I hope this podcast enables you and provides the time and space to reduce the overwhelm.
The Elements of Empowerment is a series of interviews and research into the personal characteristics we value in others and the virtues admired by most.
Confidence, Optimism, Respect, Trust, Forgiveness, Self Belief, Strength and Gratitude are just some of the 52 elements of empowerment that have been packaged up for you to reflect upon, remind yourself and recognise your own self worth.
This biggest killer of dreams is doubt and all you need is one person to believe in you. So I am here. I am that person. You are not your past, your mistakes or poor choices. You have capacity and potential. So let's find out what that looks like.

Mark was on a client call when his daughter’s mother kept calling. And calling. And calling. It was unusual so he cut his work call short and called her back, only to discover that his 10 year old daughter, Mina, was in an ambulance on the way to hospital.
Mina had suffered a brain haemorrhage and had lost one third of the functioning of her right brain hemisphere. Her left side had lost feeling and mobility.
This was the beginning of a 2.5 year battle to help Mina regain her independence, while also questioning the medical establishment’s normal procedures around rehabilitation.
Mark shares how he got through it, as well as the emotional fall-out that occurs when the crisis is over.

R WE OK? R U OK? Yep we did it again. In this episode of the Bean There? Podcast we sat front and centre at Bianchini's , Cronulla. An Italian styled cafe looking over the sands of Elouera Beach. Coffee was great but the guests were better and the conversation got deep.
Part 1
We were so grateful to have Grant Bomber Barker share his story of kick boxing and the ever lasting struggle with self doubt. He was open and honest, reflecting on his upbringing and beliefs of what it means to 'be a man' today and the one and only time he ever felt confident he was going to win. As the owner of Strong Arm Boxing 'Bomber spoke to Junior Sports Reporter Dylan about what it takes to be a 2 x world champion kick boxer. At 57 he still trains twice a day x 5 times a week and is an advocate for mens mental health.
Dianna 'Porkey' McKay, former Police Officer in child protection investigation, shared her challenges in a male dominated job when mental health was never spoken about. Porkey is that person who is 'glass half full, optimistic and positive but knows the reality of life'. As the educator of Elouera SLSC is committed to protecting children and educates our young surfing community about life skills, community and being there for one another - vowing that whilst ever there is a threat to our children's safety it won't happen on her watch. - love this chick.
Part 2
Mostapha from RUOK drops in to share the importance of the conversation after asking the question RUOK? and how the brand has created a safe space for people to share their struggle without judgement.
Nat from To Day List came into the discussion with a great philosophy and strategy for reducing overwhelm.

He is also one of the most highly decorated police officers to have ever come out of the Qld police force and has dealt with his fair share of trauma - his own and other people’s - resulting in undiagnosed PTSD.
Keith shares some of the stories from his career, as well as the ways he came to terms with those incidents, the power of martial arts, the healing power of the writing process and the moment he finally forgave himself.

WOW! What an incredible few months it's been!
Around the 22 March 2020, when all of her exisiting photography bookings were either cancelled or postponed Sophie B, decided that she wanted to capture this time in our lives and photograph the 'faces' of people in business in the Sutherland Shire. Sophie set up a Facebook Page and an Instagram Page titled, 'Sutherland Shire Open 4 Business'.
The idea is simple, a 30 minute photo session, capturing the people of businesses, supply 3 images and follow up with 3 social media posts.
By May 28, she had photographed a total of 50 businesses and reached over 650 followers on Facebook and over 165 followers on Instagram.
Absolutely overwhelmed by the encouragement and support of the community for this Personal Photography Project, Sophie went on to promise another 50 businesses the same service at no cost. Within a week she had a further 20 books and by the beginning of July as restrictions eased, she had reached her target. To read more about the impact of this project click on the Community Projects Page -------->
This talented photographer has provided over $39.5K in photography, marketing and social media services to 100 businesses for free. Her family has supported her drive to make an impact and true to her nature, Sophie has gone out and created the community she wants to be a part of. She is nothing short of inspiring, doing what she loves, being who she is and sharing it with the world.
From all of us Soph, Thank You. If you would like to provide a testimonial, comment or a story of the impact this project had on you personally or professionally, please contact us at ShirePOD on hello@sutherlandshirepodcaststation.com.au. Did you know that car accidents have a particular smell? Ex-police officer Brett says that it’s one of the things that will stay with him forever.
According to Brett, a normal day in the life of a first responder involves attending the scenes of car accidents, domestic violence incidents and suicides and, that when he first joined the force, the preferred organisational method of coping with this daily trauma was a trip to the pub.
Brett’s interview sheds light on the toxic culture of the police force, the psychological fallout from extended exposure to it, and the lifesaving healing he found in long distance running.

Harry was one of 13 passengers who were involved in the accident, and one of six who ended up in ICU when the 3.8m high bus went under a 3m overpass.
Suffering devastating injuries, amnesia and, later, depression and PTSD, Harry’s story takes a remarkable turn when he becomes involved in an appeal for the driver.
