Episode 107 – Spiritual Fitness w/ Dudley DanielPeople tend to search for their deeper meaning, and some do it by seeking answers to questions they arrive at over years of thought. In many cases, people develop a spirituality about themselves that enables their ability to become better. This episode is not like ones we have done in the past. Instead, it takes a small glance at spiritual fitness, or the beliefs and practices that strengthen their connectedness with a source of hope, meaning, and purpose. Fundamentally, spiritual fitness is critical to developing overall wellness and should be personal. Brian takes on this challenge by looking at the life of his father-in-law, Dudley Daniel. He opens up the book of Dudley’s life and explores what it was that allowed him to constantly seek spiritual fitness. Maybe there is something in the message that will help you. Let us know.

Episode 104 – Leadership Lessons from Vimy Ridge We can take lessons from so many before us and many of those lessons are simple when you think about them. In this episode, Brian and James tackle the battle endured by the Canadian Army at Vimy Ridge in 1917. Julian Byng and Arthur Currie were before their time in developing tactics that enabled the Canadians to take the ground that the British and French before them failed to conquer. These leaders established maneuvers that are still used today and they did so under the know-how of leadership ability. Give it a listen and let us know your thoughts!

Episode 85 – Something to think about… How we interact with others can be a massive part of our influence. In this episode, Brian & Ed go through a list of some possible social rules you might live by or could start using. These rules are not all-inclusive and can be enhanced to assist you in your personal life. So here they are:

  1. Do not call someone more than twice continuously. If they do not pick up your call, resume they have something important to attend to.
  2. Return money that you have borrowed even before the person you borrowed it from asks you for it. It shows your integrity and character. The same goes for umbrellas, pens, and lunch boxes.
  3. Never order the expensive dish on the menu when someone is paying.
  4. Do not ask awkward questions like ‘Oh so you aren’t married yet?’ or ‘Don’t you have kids?’ or ‘Why didn’t you buy a house?’ or ‘Why don’t you buy a car?’ Remember, It isn’t your problem.
  5. Always open the door for the person coming behind you. It does not matter if it is a guy or gal, senior or junior. You do not grow small by treating someone well in public.
  6. If you take a taxi with a friend and he/she pays now, try paying next time.
  7. Respect different shades of opinions. Remember what is 6 to you will appear 9 to someone facing you. Besides, a second opinion is good for an alternative.
  8. Never interrupt people talking. Allow them to pour it out. As they say, hear them all and filter them all.
  9. If you tease someone, and they do not seem to enjoy it, stop it and never do it again. It encourages one to do more and it shows how appreciative you are.
  10. Say “thank you” when someone is helping you.
  11. Praise publicly and criticize privately.
  12. There is almost never a reason to comment on someone’s weight. Just say, “You look fantastic”. If they want to talk about losing weight, they will.
  13. When someone shows you a photo on their phone, do not swipe left or right. You never know what is next.
  14. If a colleague tells you, they have a doctor’s appointment, do not ask what it is for, just say “I hope you’re okay”. Do not put them in the uncomfortable position of having to tell you their personal illness. If they want you to know, they will do so without your inquisitiveness.
  15. Treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO. Nobody is impressed at how rude you can treat someone below you but people will notice if you treat them with respect.
  16. If a person is speaking directly to you, staring at your phone is rude.
  17. Never give advice until you are asked for it.
  18. When meeting someone after a long time, unless they want to talk about it, do not ask them their age and salary.
  19. Mind your business unless anything involves you directly – just stay out of it.
  20. Remove your sunglasses if you are talking to anyone in the street. It is a sign of respect. More so, eye contact is as important as your speech.
  21. Never talk about your riches amid the poor. Similarly, do not talk about your children among the barren.
  22. After reading a good message try to say “Thanks for the message”.
  23. Appreciation remains the easiest way of getting what you don’t have…

Episode 73 – Leadership during Crisis – Part 1 Leadership during a crisis can define you as a leader and everything Brian & Ed have discussed over the previous 72 episodes are what you need to be successful. A crisis is that defining moment that will show you your strengths and weaknesses.

Brian & Ed answer a self-assessment you should look at yourself.

  1. I can make decisions and recommendations although under extreme time pressures.
  2. I stay composed when I have to deal with an urgent problem that is suddenly facing me.
  3. I almost never choke under pressure.
  4. When the pressure is heavy, I can give clear direction to other people.
  5. When someone else is facing a very difficult situation, I am reassuring and helpful.
  6. When faced with an emergency, I can make a good decision even without all the facts I need.
  7. When facing a major problem, I quickly get input from people who might have useful suggestions for dealing with the problem.
  8. If I am faced with a real mess that is mostly or partly my responsibility, I tell the truth about what happened.

Brian & Ed then cover 6 of the twelve points of leadership during crisis management.

  1. Be decisive
  2. Lead with compassion
  3. Think Strategically (See the big picture)
  4. Communicate widely about the problem
  5. Reestablish the usual work routine
  6. Stick with constructive core values

Episode 72 – Humility…Let’s not talk about me “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less” – Rick Warren KEY POINTS * Humility is an important but under-discussed value of leadership. * Humble leaders are considered more approachable, forgiving of mistakes, and willing to acknowledge others' work, which can motivate employees to share ideas and work harder. * Humility becomes more important as a leader's responsibility increases. * Cultivating humility as a leader requires knowing when to ask for help, using inclusive language when talking about work and accomplishments, and giving credit to others.

9 Reasons Humility Is the Key Ingredient to Exceptional Leadership and Influence The people we admire and feel most inspired to follow are those who do not have a need to showboat their accomplishments or convince others of their greatness. Showboats are more of a turn-off than a turn-on when it comes to leadership. We are most inspired by leaders who show exceptional character, who take pride in who they are and in what they have accomplished. Humble leaders use their skills, knowledge and experience to bring people together to increase productivity, improve quality of life, and create a positive culture. Leaders who come from humility use their success for the greater good, rather than for self-glorification.

  1. Humanity
  2. Balanced Authority
  3. Promote Others
  4. Acknowledge Others
  5. Collaborative
  6. Good Sport
  7. Powerful
  8. Integrity
  9. Grateful

HOW TO BE A HUMBLE LEADER IN THREE SIMPLE STEPS Humble leaders are made, not born, and once made; they can slip into arrogance if they are not careful. Here are three ways to develop and preserve humility:

  1. Be a constant learner. It is almost impossible to be egocentric when you remain fully aware of how much you don't know. When I moved to the for-profit role, I should have accepted that I didn't fully understand the new financial system and sought help.
  2. Watch your pronouns. If you often use first-person pronouns like “I”, “me,” “my,” and “mine” when talking with your staff or others about your team's work, you are showing immaturity as a leader. Team members may object if you claim ownership of their work or results. Get in the habit of using third-person pronouns such as “we,” “our,” and “us” instead.
  3. Look for ways to give credit. Your team will be willing to go the extra mile if they know you will acknowledge their hard work. Giving credit to others, even when you have done much of the work, motivates employees.

Episode 67 – Influence is…Transparency Most leaders set out to be transparent, but it can be hard to measure if you truly are a transparent leader.

Here’s a checklist we’ve put together to help you assess if you’re on the right track:

  1. Are you candid, honest and do you genuinely express your thoughts and opinions?
  2. Does the message you are delivering remain the same, regardless of the audience?
  3. Do you tell the truth?
  4. When you can’t divulge information, do you let people know why you can’t disclose the information at that time?
  5. Do you consistently keep commitments?
  6. Do you handle your own defeats well, owning them and not blaming others?
  7. Do you ask good questions, listen to the answers and remain open to new ideas?
  8. Do you value the feedback of others?
  9. Do you frequently ask others working with you, “How am I doing?” or, “What could I do to better support you?”

After this episode, you might be able to answer those questions rather easily.

Episode 31 – Influence is…Pivotal, Versatile, & Adaptive Today’s show is about learning to be a pivotal, versatile, and adaptive influencer. Brian and Ed take a deep dive into the meaning of each word and help give experiences they have had with them. Sit back and enjoy another great episode of Instinctive Influencers.

PIVOTAL:

A pivotal role, point or figure in something is one that is very important and affects the success of that thing

High school graduation is a pivotal moment in most people's lives — an important point that signifies a shift in direction.

You see the word pivot in pivotal. That is because when something is pivotal, it is central, and everything related to the topic turns or depends on it. An election can be a pivotal moment in a nation's history if the direction the country takes depends on it. Your belief in reincarnation may be pivotal to how you treat animals. Pivotal means important, but it has a sense of centrality and turning.

Some people are pivotal in our lives. They are present to us at just the right time with just what we need.

A pivotal person is extremely important to an endeavor. The success or failure of the project may hinge on the actions of the pivotal person, that person being the one who directs and guides other contributors to the project.

VERSATILE:

To describe a person or thing that can adapt to do many things or serve many functions, consider the adjective versatile.

In E.B. White's classic children's book Charlotte's Web, Charlotte the spider tells Wilbur the pig that she is versatile. "What does 'versatile' mean — full of eggs?" Wilbur asks. "Certainly not," Charlotte replies. "'Versatile' means I can turn with ease from one thing to another." Charlotte knew her etymology because the word reflects its Latin root, versatilis, "turning around; revolving." It eventually came to describe someone who is multi-talented: a singer-songwriter-actress-model would be a versatile figure in the entertainment world.

Definition of versatile

1: embracing a variety of subjects, fields, or skills also: turning with ease from one thing to another

2: having many uses or applications versatile building material

3: changing or fluctuating readily: VARIABLE a versatile disposition

4a(1): capable of turning forward or backward: REVERSIBLE a versatile toe of a bird

(2): capable of moving laterally and up and down versatile antennae

  1. of an anther: having the filaments attached at or near the middle so as to swing freely

https://www.deseretnews.com/top/779/0/18-versatile-skills-to-succeed-in-any-job.html

ADAPTIVE:

Use adaptive to describe people who are flexible — they don't lose their cool when plans change quickly and they are always willing to learn new ways to do things. Being adaptive helps you sail along in today's ever-changing world. What do chameleons and your grandparents who only started using computers a few years ago have in common? They are adaptive. Just as chameleons change color to match their surroundings — green when sitting on leaves, brown when climbing the tree's trunk — your grandparents learned the skills to keep up with the world around them. The opposite of adaptive is stubborn. People, lizards, or anything that refuses to change is stubborn. To welcome change is to be adaptive.

Episode 27 – Building and Deploying an Influencer Vision * Project five to 10 years in the future.

    • According to British/American author and motivational speaker, Simon Sinek “Vision is a destination — a fixed point to which we focus all effort. Strategy is a route — an adaptable path to get us where we want to go.”
  • Dream big and focus on success.

    • For people to be truly inspired, the vision needs to be big. It needs to be something that seems challenging so that it will call your team to draw on their best selves to be able to achieve it
  • Use clear, concise and jargon-free language.

    • Great examples of company vision statements: - Habitat for Humanity: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. - Disney: To Make People Happy - Cold Stone Creamery: The ultimate ice cream experience. - Microsoft: Empower people through great software anytime, anyplace, and on any device. - Southwest Air: To become the world’s most loved, most flown, and most profitable airline. - TED: Spread ideas.
  • Infuse it with passion and make it inspiring.

    • If you love it you will work hard for it, but if everyone else loves it you created a force multiplier to reach that goal.
  • Align it with your organizational/personal/community values and set goals.

    • Depending upon the reach you are striving for will be critical to who you actually influence. Values and goals have a deeply rooted hold upon people and if you are able to tie into those values and create clear goals then the buy-in will create overwhelming ownership.
    • Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you are setting goals and tracking progress relative to them:
      • Make sure the goals are aligned with the vision. If you notice your team straying away from your main vision when setting goals, then bring them back to the vision.
      • Remind your team about the vision on a regular basis. You should be communicating it so often that everyone knows it by heart. For the vision to be useful, people have to actually know it!
      • Have your team members break down the larger goals into smaller time-limited objectives (and provide help, if needed). This will help to keep them on task, and moving forward appropriately.
      • Create systems that enable everyone to keep track of your goals and progress. This contributes to a sense of accountability around the goals that have been set.
  • Have a plan to communicate your vision to your others.

    • When people of similar interests come together and share a common vision, the collective energy automatically shoots up. There is a sense of real commitment. And, with a focus on the shared vision, success means the same for everyone involved. Without clarity, your team will become unproductive and inefficient. With a clear destination, they can be focused and inspired.
  • Be prepared to commit time and resources to the vision you establish

    • The accomplishment of a vision does not just happen instantly and will take time to truly be relevant or taken seriously. As you start looking at the elements of your vision you will begin to see that resources will be needed to accomplish what was stated. Create a plan of attack and then be prepared to deviate from the plan as needed, because not all goes as planned.

To help you get started at the level of self, try creating a vision board. A vision board is a dynamic tool used to help set a vision and constantly be reminded of that vision.

This website will help open you up to understanding what a vision board is and how to build one.

Episode 25 – The First Q&A Show Below you will find all the questions posted for our very first Q&A Show. Don’t worry, you will get a chance to ask more questions for our next one which will be Episode 50.

  1. Tammy Haley - Do you think that understanding Freud's Personality Factors can/will help you to influence others? (Perhaps this might be a full episode, as it encompasses so much).

  2. Tammy Haley - Have either of you read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie? If so, what did you think of it?

  3. Tammy Haley - To further it, if you haven't, perhaps the podcast could do a 'book club' type episode, where everyone interested can read the book, send in their views/interpretations on a thread, and y'all talk about just this book. I don't know. Seems my brain is flowing with ideas tonight

  4. Tammy Haley - Brian - in the Suicide episode, you talked about the Netflix show "Thirteen Reasons Why". The show was actually based on the Novel of the same name by Jay Asher. I encourage you to read the novel, when you have the time, as it was very well written and even more traumatic and dramatic than the show. (Not really a question, just that I have read the book and I would love to hear what you think of it).

  5. Tammy Haley -

Ice cream or sherbet? Fro-yo or gelato? Pizza or tacos? Cats or dogs? Sun or snow? Favorite season? Beach or mountains? Boxers or briefs?

  1. Ric Williams - What was your most difficult leadership challenge, and when did you realize it was your most difficult leadership challenge

  2. Tammy Haley - What are some lessons learned with professional boundaries for teams you lead?

  3. Heather Linville - We talk to ourselves more than anyone...how big of an impact do you think our internal conversations have on our lives, and what way can we keep that internal conversation the most positive influence it can be? Do you have your own intentional, motivational talk with yourself or is it second nature?

  4. Cathy Sanchez - What is the best way to handle a situation where you know your boss did something ethically wrong?

Episode 17 – Influencing with Developed Emotional Intelligence What is Emotional Intelligence?

The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.

5 Emotional Intelligence Competencies with Solutions to Success

  1. Self-Awareness/Reflection – Understanding yourself by knowing your emotional Strengths and Weaknesses. This is also knowing how others perceive us as being know how your mood directs thoughts and decisions.

Solution to Success: Journal and if you are unsure what to write then use prompts. Also, you can slow down to grab your composure (Take just a few minutes to think). Be introspective in nature and seek honest feedback from those you trust. Become an internal change agent driven to improve weaknesses and strengths. Be honest with yourself and check your ego.

  1. Self-Regulation/Discipline – Taking control of your emotions when faced with challenge or stress. Think about decisions and outcomes. Be reserved in language toward others. Holding to your personal values. Do not become a slave to your emotions.

Solution to Success: Build your own values-based code of conduct. Take ownership no matter the outcome but be sure to praise others when it is good. When faced with giving an emotional response use 15-30 seconds of deep breathing to gain control. Develop 3 different courses of action to allow yourself to think in different directions.

  1. Motivation/Purpose – It is important to know why you are doing what you are doing and have a positive mindset of success. Knowing your why in anything you do has to be your center of focus. If you are unsure of your why then your motivation will drain quickly.

Solution to Success: Find your why, which can be done using the lessons of Simon Sinek. Once you know your why, measure your motivation level (low, medium, high). Set achievable goals to elevate confidence and a positive environment. We will be faced with times of despair or problems so a bridge to overcome is using resilience (Hunt the Good stuff is great for this). We have to remind ourselves; Attitude is everything and to think long term.

  1. Empathy – Put yourself in other people’s shoes to help understand their emotional state. This will help you understand the wants, needs, and correlated viewpoints of each. Empathy will allow you to react in a worthy manner according to other people's emotions. A highly useful reaction for you is being calm to help the others be calm.

Solution to Success: Put yourself in other's shoes by going through a thought process of you being the one going through the emotion due to a circumstance. Good or bad visualize yourself going through the same instance. Train yourself to be observant of body language, but also be aware that your body language could be what they are mimicking. Once you notice another’s feelings then respond to them and attempt to create a positive situation if need be.

  1. Social Skills – Having the ability to communicate with others no matter the circumstance or situation. Being a team player who creates an atmosphere or environment of positive movement forward to success. Social Skills open the doors of success for others through positive affirmation and motivation. The foundation of this is relationship building.

Solutions to Success: Learn about conflict resolution and how to direct the conflict when faced with it. Improve communication verbally and nonverbally by engaging in meaningful conversation and by paying attention to your body language. You should strive to have the tough conversations as much as the easy ones. Praise of others is key to building relationships.

Episode 16 – Influencing Change Change is inevitable…it will happen, no matter who you are.

  • 2017 APA report found “Americans who reported recent or current change were almost 3x’s as likely to say they intend to seek employment outside the organization within the next year”.
  • But the bigger question is why? Possibly because the focus was on the change more than the employees involved.

Influencing change starts with the mindset of changing the way people feel about change.

  • It’s not the change people hate, it’s how they feel about it. Feeling (also known as the Stress) can over analyze and create a negative bias because of the stress hormones created.

We can overcome the stress trigger with resilience skills. This is where Influencers or Leaders need to be active in the lives of their people.

  • The three core skills needed:
    • How we take in and filter information
    • How we act in response to challenges
    • How we interact with others
  • 6 Areas for Overcoming Difficulties in Change:
    • Personal Responsibility
    • Realistic Optimism
    • Self-Composure
    • Problem Solving
    • Goal Orientation
    • Courageous Communication

Techniques Influencers can use to help build within those going through Change.

  • Use Active Thinking – (1.) Detect Icebergs, (2.) Problem Solving, (3.) Put It in Perspective, (4.) Mental Games, (5.) Integrating Imagery
  • Practice Mindfulness – (1.) Activating Event, thoughts, & Consequences, (2.) Avoid Thinking Traps, (3.) Real-Time Resilience, (4.) Identify Character Strengths, (5.) Energy Management, (6.) Attention Control
  • Set Appropriate Goals – (1.) Hung the Good Stuff, (2.) Assertive Communication, (3.) Character Strengths – Challenges & Leadership, (4.) Plan & Prioritize your time, (5.) Effective Praise and active Constructive Responding

It is in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005. This workout was one of Mike's favorites and he'd named it "Body Armor", but in honor of Michael Murphy, it is referred to as a "Murph". You are able to partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Start and finish with a mile run.
