If you're a teacher then you're a leader and a professional public speaker. Let's have a human conversation about what it means to teach.
Welcome to the final episode of the School of Thought Podcast! My deepest thanks go out to everyone who has supported this podcast along the way.
This is also the final installment of School of Thought Goes To The Movies! On these episodes we discuss great movies about teaching and analyze the lessons they have for educators.
Today we’re breaking down the teachers of Star Wars, the great Jedi masters of Episodes 1-9 from the Star Wars universe. While these are not traditional school movies, education is at the heart of the Star Wars saga and the practice of being a Jedi. Your hosts Ry-Cow Den and Kyle-O Brooks trust their feelings as they reflect on the wisdom that can be gleaned from these profound stories.
On this episode we discuss:
Kyle Brooks is a pastor and church planter in California. He has also appeared on Episode 31 of the School of Thought Podcast.
Indiana University Social Studies Interview Project: https://education.indiana.edu/students/graduates/program-specific/social-studies/educator-interviews/index.html
Welcome to School of Thought Goes To The Movies! On these episodes we discuss great movies about teaching and analyze the lessons they have for educators. Today we’re breaking down Inception, the landmark film from director Christopher Nolan. While not a teaching movie in the traditional sense, this movie has a lot to say about teaching and learning.
Today’s guest is my good friend Dillon Vibbart, director and producer of indie films such as Social Norm and Somniphobia.

Tom Schulman is a screenwriter from Los Angeles. He is best known for writing the screenplays for classic films such as Dead Poets Society, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and What About Bob?. His screenplay for Dead Poets Society won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1989, and was his first movie script to reach the big screen. This script is semi-autobiographical, based on his experiences in the classroom of Sam Pickering, one of his teachers at a prep school in Nashville, Tennessee. Pickering himself is a writer of many books, including a very good one on teaching called Letters to a Teacher.

Welcome to a special edition of the School of Thought Podcast! This is our first ever edition of School of Thought Goes To The Movies, where we use our favorite movies to explore the world of education. Today we’re talking about Twelve O’Clock High, a WWII movie made in 1949 that explores the difficulties of leadership. It stars Gregory Peck and won two Academy Awards.
This movie has been shown to soldiers and sailors in officer training school to develop them for the challenges of leadership. We’ll discuss the ways in which leaders can get too close to the people they lead, how to turn around a place with a toxic culture, and how these leadership lessons apply to the classroom.
Our guest today is Elliott Powell, who was a guest on School of Thought Episode 20. He is a retired U.S. Navy Captain who served in the Navy for 26 years. He commanded four ships during his tenure there, including the command of a minesweeper during Operation Desert Storm, with which he destroyed or cleared 16 mines. After his naval career he became the director of the White House Situation Room and served under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush in that capacity. Powell now serves as an 8th Grade U.S. History teacher in Southern California. He was named teacher of the year at his middle school in 2018.

Scott Elgersma is the head pastor of The River Church in Redlands, California. After spending 11 years pastoring high school and middle school students, Scott became the head pastor of a church in Southern California. I’ve known Scott since I was 14 years old, the age when I started attending his youth group. We have remained close friends to this day. In this episode, we discuss what it means to connect with teenagers, how Scott teaches, and the way he leads in the polarizing political climate.
We spend a great deal of time breaking down a speech he gave to his church the day after Donald Trump was inaugurated. You will hear clips of that speech in the podcast, and there is a link in the notes below to the full video on Facebook.

Dr. John Burdett is the Director of Instrumental Studies, Director of Bands, and Director of Graduate Music Education at Azusa Pacific University. John has many responsibilities as a result of these positions, including running the Instrumental Studies program, leading the band division, and teaching graduate student courses. He is also currently the director of the Wind Ensemble.
John Burdett is also a bit of a guru. He and Matt have been friends for many years, a friendship that is displayed throughout the conversation. In this interview Matt shares some of the "Burdett quotes" that have given him meaning and direction in his life. We hope you benefit from some guru time this week!
The conversation with John Burdett was philosophical and introspective. Burdett surprised us with the depth at which he has reflected on some of the questions we asked him. He speaks less as a music educator and more as someone concerned with the nature of education as a whole. He is curious about what it means to teach, how people learn, and the purpose of education in peoples' lives.
John shared his thoughts about overcoming the "Conservatory Mindset," the idea that the purpose of music education is to become good at your instrument. Burdett learned early in his career that his musical talent did not make him an effective teacher. Burdett also shared his insight that he was able to reach more students earlier in his career when he was less preoccupied with curriculum and more concerned with connection.
John mentions the book "Teaching Music with Passion" by Peter Boonshaft.
If you want to reach Dr. Burdett you can email him at jburdett@apu.edu.

Eric Anderson is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Southern California. Eric specializes in addiction therapy and currently focuses his work on men struggling with sex addiction. Eric has also been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a groundbreaking new way to treat pain and trauma. Eric also shares his expertise by hosting workshops, public speaking, and being interviewed on podcasts. If you want to find out more about Eric or connect with him, please check out his website: https://www.ericandersoncounseling.com. We were interested to talk to Eric about the leadership and communication skills necessary to do the difficult work of addiction therapy. As a classroom teacher, you may be familiar with the difficulty of getting students to feel safe enough to engage in real conversations about the subject matter. Eric faces this challenge daily as he tries to get men and couples to open up about the struggles in their lives. Eric also shares his insights on when to use your academic knowledge and when to build relationships, how to build credibility with others, building up your confidence, and creating healthy group dynamics. These are skills we could all use in the classroom, or wherever our leadership skills are needed! Eric is an old friend of ours, and we may occasionally refer to him by his nickname, “Erock.” Sorry about that. If you hear a reference to “Erock,” please remember that we are talking about Mr. Anderson. Eric references the work of therapist Stan Tatkin, an innovator behind the psychobiological approach to couples therapy. He has published several popular books on this topic. A good starting place for his thought would be his book Wired for Love. To find out more about Stan Tatkin, along with more of his books, videos, and ideas, please visit his website, https://stantatkin.com.
