Today’s episode comes to you from a distance. We are both recording in separate locations so that we can be protected from COVID-19 and we are talking all about distance learning. Like so many districts around the state of Tennessee and around the country, our local school district is closed until the end of the month, but we will be implementing distance learning. Today we are going to be talking about how to make the most of distance learning and how to make it work for you and your students. We hope you will find this episode useful as we all navigate uncharted waters in the weeks to come and that you leave today’s episode feeling a little less overwhelmed about what distance learning might look like.

Today, we are headed into educational territory that people don’t often talk about. That’s right, we are talking all about student teachers. It is important to remember that we all start somewhere, so we sat down with two student teachers who are just starting out on their teaching journey. Daniel Allen and Luke Saunders are currently serving as student teachers within our school building and we were lucky enough to pick their brains about what their student teaching experience has been like so far. Sometimes we forget what it is like to be the new kid on the block, but Luke and Daniel really opened up about the highs and the lows that they have experienced. If you have ever had a student teacher in your classroom, then hopefully this episode will shed some light on what it’s like to be a student teacher in 2019.

We are wrapping up the school year and the end is in sight, so the last thing on your mind is professional development. In our experience, someone can mention professional development and a lot of people roll their eyes. We believe that educators have been forced into professional developments that are not applicable to them, aren’t presented well, and sometimes are just plain boring. We sat down together to discuss what we think professional development ought to be and what we wish it was.

- Derrick: Screencast videos - (Screencast = recording video of your screen with audio from a microphone to create a video presentation.) Use a screencasting tool. Screencastify’s Chrome extension works well. Students can create a presentation in Google Slides and then record themselves presenting it. Screencastify uploads the video directly to their Google Drive and YouTube accounts, so the video can be shared with a link or embedded on a website.

In this episode, we are talking to Dr. Chad Smith. Dr. Smith is a high school principal as well as a professor for a graduate program here in East Tennessee. We sat down with Dr. Smith to discuss the value of continuing your education as an educator. So many teachers are going back to school to get a Master’s, EdS, or even doctorate degree for different reasons such as a pay raise, having the education needed to pursue administration, or even just for personal development to be the best teacher possible.
In our conversation, we talk about how Dr. Smith encourages his staff to further their education through not only graduate programs, but specific professional developments as well. We also get down to the nitty gritty of graduate programs and what you should look for if wanting to pursue an advanced degree.
