The nursing profession has been considered one of the MOST trusted professions in past years, but why does it seem like nurses are leaving the bedside in droves? If you're an aspiring nurse, this may cause some anxiety so let's have a conversation about this.

How do we navigate all of this?

In this episode-- we talk about:

  • Weekly YouTube Live!!!!

Welcome to episode 73!

We're living in a time where information is literally EVERYWHERE. We are in the age of social media and the worldwide web, where access to free information is in abundance.

Although there are several nurses who are considering entrepreneurship as a path, it is not necessarily #goals for all of you. There are nurses whose long-term goal is to continue their career as a Registered Nurse. At the the same time, there are some of you who are considering entrepreneurship as a goal in the future.

No one career path will look the same, and it's crucial for us to take the necessary steps to place ourselves in the best position possible to succeed.

In this episode-- we talk about:

  • Vision + Passion does not equate to strategy
  • Content creation as a career path
  • Gatekeepers: how open dialogue allows all of us to win

Welcome to episode 72!

In college— somehow my life felt less chaotic. Mainly because I’m 100% adulting now! Part of it has to do with the fact that I wasn’t trying to do everything at the same time. There was a simplicity there. And that simplicity led to efficiency. More got done.

As I navigate life as an off-duty nurse and aspiring entrepreneur, I got faced with a huge dose of reality. I can do ANYTHING but I can't do EVERYTHING at the same time.

In this episode-- we talk about:

  • The importance of aligning yourself with experts in the field who are operating within their zone of genius
  • Efficiency when we're focused
  • Self-care | Stepping back in order to step forward

Welcome to episode 71!

If you went to nursing school, chances are you learned very little about becoming an entrepreneur. Gross vs. Net Profit. Marketing. Time management. Side-hustling. None of these topics were covered while we learned how to conduct a head-to-toe assessment.

In this episode-- we talk about:

  • Why it's important to utilize both free and PAID resources to learn concepts that you may not be familiar with if you're hoping to make a career change
  • The importance of aligning yourself with experts in the field who are operating within their zone of genius
  • Living life on PURPOSE | How answering our call can affect the lives of those attached to us

Welcome to episode 70!

Today’s episode is inspired by one of my favourite podcasts to listen to, The Pivot. This podcast is hosted by three former football players who are family men, entrepreneurs, public figures, philanthropists… the list goes on. The hosts, Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder positioned this podcast to explore our lives and essentially the PIVOT that we all go through.

In this episode-- we talk about:

  • Why we absolutely need community as we navigate our own personal pivot
  • Stepping outside of ourselves (and Google) to find answers and/or resources that we need to succeed within our own process
  • Why intermittent assessments are needed to ensure the steps that we're taking make sense with what it is we're trying to accomplish

Welcome to episode 64!

In this episode-- we talk about:

  • Taking a product from idealization to full business idea
  • Staying consistent and how that creates rapport for consumers
  • Why nurses need to prioritize self care

Albert Matheny, IV, MS, RD is a true entrepreneur in every sense of the word. He is the founder and CEO of Promix Nutrition, a company he founded over a decade ago. He’s also the co-founder of the Soho Strength Lab, a personal training gym and athletic training center based in NYC. We discuss his journey as an entrepreneur and how he decided to continue to expand his business and brand by partnering with Devon Lévesque. This conversation was a full circle moment as we discussed the grind that took place over the years.

As nurses are learning to leverage their careers by becoming side hustlers and entrepreneurs, recognizing that nursing school does not train us to become business owners is key. We have to take the steps to combine what we know with resources about what could be a complete career shift as a new business owner.

Welcome to another segment of our Money Talk Series where we like to break down the broad topic of finances into smaller concepts that we can easily process. As nurses, we have the unique ability to leverage our schedules to maximize both our time and finances and I am here to help you do that! We love to talk money around here because we understand the importance of access to information and how that access can literally change our lives. The more dialogue we have around this topic the more progress we'll be able to make both as individuals and as a collective whole.

This week we have Tremaine Wills of Mind Over Money. In this episode, we have a transparent conversation about money, entrepreneurship, and the concept of creating a need-based business if you're wanting to jump into the world of entrepreneurship.

Welcome to Episode 6 of Season 5!!!!

We're ready to spill the tea on how this short-term renting journey has been going so far. We have officially gone through one full month of occupancy at the Vintage Bungalow. Our short-term rental we recently acquired last year.

This episode is all about my journey to entrepreneurship and how this latest venture has allowed me to experience nursepreneurship (nurse + entrepreneurship) first hand. Travel nursing led to blogging. Blogging led to podcasting. All three ventures led to the development of a short-term rental business. We dive into the details-- a transparent conversation on what the last few months has looked like up to this point.

Welcome to Part II of our money talk series featuring AJ of AJ Mobile Money—a youtuber, blogger, and content creator. One of our OG guests when we first launched the Vintage Traveling Nurse blog back in 2019. We brought back our money talk series this week where we are breaking down the broad topic of finances down into small, digestible bite size pieces.

These conversations are all about creating generational wealth. Using our most powerful wealth building tool— our income. Learning how to make our money work for us like it’s intended to.

This conversation is crucial amongst our circles even with our secure, recession proof healthcare jobs. As we all know the only thing constant in this life is change, and anything can happen with any of our jobs. The more we know—the better it is for our financial situation. And when we know better we do better.

Welcome to Episode 2 of Season 5!

The money talk series continues this week and we are breaking this broad topic down into small, digestible, bite-sized pieces so that we can all take charge when it comes to our finances.

My good friend Widlin joins me in today’s conversation where we dive into the daily grind that goes into building your legacy—creating generational wealth. Using your most powerful wealth building tool—your income. Learning how to make your money work for you like it’s intended to.

I think the mindset as frontline and healthcare workers is that there is nothing one extra shift or overtime can’t take care of-- but what happens when that secure job gets taken away like so many of us experienced earlier this year? What do we then?

This conversation is crucial amongst our respective circles & yes that includes our secure healthcare jobs. This is definitely one of those episodes you'll want to listen to again in the near future to re-ignite that fire inside of you when you need some motivation.

Welcome to episode 1 of season 5!

It’s been a while since our last money talk but it is still very much something that we are constantly working on. Traveling the last year and a half afforded me the opportunity to be able to purchase my first home. Once I started traveling, my income increased drastically by taking an assignment in California. But the increase income alone didn’t do it. I learned how to minimize my expenses while increasing my income and those two dynamics together resulted in helping me to close on a home this year.

The more I learn about debt management, early retirement, investments, and anything that has to do with money the more I enjoy those types of conversations. Learning how to leverage our finances so we can use it as a tool is key.

Nicole of Frugal Chic Life has not only taken the initiative to educate others on how to attain a life of debt freedom-- she has gone through her own personal journey. She shares all things money on her YouTube, website, and Instagram page @frugalchiclife. She has a ton of free resources for both beginners and the financial savvy consumer. We delve into this conversation from a position of transparency. She leaves us with a wealth of knowledge.

No one could have possibly imagined nursing school to be what it is right now yet here we are. Gabby gives us a glimpse of nursing school in 2020, and what it looks like to remain flexible while managing life as a student. We are literally living out the virtual reality that only seemed to be a part of our imagination in times passed.

Nursing students right now offer so much to both seasoned nurses and other fellow nursing students alike. There’s much to glean from each other, especially now as we’re learning how to pivot into a new season within the field of nursing. Each of us have something to offer and serve as the best resources to each other.

2020 has been deemedthe Year of the Nurse so we are going to chat it up with our future nurses over the next two weeks. Nursing for a long time has been considered to be one of the most trusted professions and continue to be a huge part of healthcare. Along with being the year of the nurse, 2020 has made it particularly challenging for our future nurses.

With the sudden onset of COVID-19, some of our seasoned nurses decided to make a career shift and leave the bedside. While nursing students began second-guessing their decision to continue with their pursuit to work within the field.

During my travel nursing assignments in Southern California, I had the pleasure to work side by side with Lucy, a student nurse that is seamlessly crushing nursing school while working full time. No one could have possibly imagined the transition to virtual clinicals yet here we are.

Lucy shares what nursing school looks like in 2020. What it looks like to remain flexible while managing life as a student—a concept that is not only needed while in nursing school but is crucial to working on the floor. She is plowing through the program like a boss. She has provided much insight on how to remain focused.

You are in for a treat today—I have Lena for today’s #vintagetralk. Lena is a boss within her own right. She runs both an event planning company known as Above-N-Beyond Balloons & Events and a photography business—both their own separate entities.

Most of my listeners are women. Some aspiring to one day have a family while pursuing the goal of working full time, part time, creating a business or a combination of all of those things. Knowing that, I made it my mission to have a variety of women talk about their experiences while managing all of those things.

The common question we ask ourselves is whether or not it is possible to “have it all” and honestly, I believe the answer to that is it depends on what "having it all" means to you. What defines having it all changes depending on what season you’re in. It will evolve with time.

Having those check-ins with yourself often helps you to keep a pulse of what your needs, wants, and desires are.

This episode is a bonus episode and closing segment of our entrepreneurship series where we will delved into the topic of entrepreneurship. I really began exploring this topic over the last year and a half while I was working as a travel nurse and I unpacked that here.

Ilomise is the current owner & CEO of Pondella Residential Care which is an Assisted Living Facility based out of SW FL. I literally watched as she submitted herself to the grind and she is the epitome of resilience. All of us can see ourselves in her story as she shares her journey navigating the inevitable challenges that come with life. You are in for a pleasant surprise as we unpack her experience as a #nursepreneur.

The highlight of this episode for me is Ilomise’s transparency. Sharing our personal journey, experiences, tips, resources-- the passing of the baton to the next person, allows us to see positive changes within our communities. Closing the huge gaps that separate the haves and have nots. Ilomise keeps it real with our listeners today ensuring that she covers both her triumphs and her challenges.

This episode is the eighth segment of our entrepreneurship series where we delve into the topic of entrepreneurship. I really began exploring this topic over the last year and a half while I was working as a travel nurse and I'm unpacking that here.

Finding that sweet spot within your nursing career is key to experiencing longevity and avoiding burnout. But what does that sweet spot look like? Creating a good work-life balance. Taking time off when you need it. Knowing when it’s time to move on to a different specialty. And connecting with other people within nursing that can help you to create a sense of community. Having support within any career—especially a potentially high-stress field like nursing will help.

I speak to Corky, founder of the nursing community The RN on the Move who has given decades of her dedication to nursing. Her experiences range from the bedside to management. Entrepreneurship to travel nursing. And how now has added Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner to the list.

We have a candid conversation of what it’s really like when you’re navigating life as a registered nurse. We can even get in a rut, often feeling like we're stuck but I'm here to remind you that nurses- we have options.

This episode is the seventh segment of our series where we will delve into the topic of entrepreneurship. I really began exploring this topic over the last year and a half while I was working as a travel nurse and I'm unpacking that here.

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Self-care & mental health awareness is a topic and a lifestyle that we cover very frequently on the podcast and we will continue to address it regularly. As healthcare professionals, we give of ourselves so much. It is essential to know when it’s time to unwind and take care of yourself.

Franchesca Fontus specializes in mental health and trauma and sees several different scenarios- whether it be individuals, couples, or families. She is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, serving as the owner and CEO of her private practice, Purpose Therapy.

We talk about navigating life while managing COVID-19 in addition to other issues that are at the forefront such as racial inequality. Staying connected in a day and age when social distancing has become a new norm. Remaining connected to your community. Creating normalcy within a time where everything seems far from normal.

What you will take away from this episode will remind you that self-care is an act of self love.

This episode is a bonus episode to our series where we delve into the topic of entrepreneurship. What better way to succeed in entrepreneurship than by learning how to address your whole person—your spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical needs.

Traveling with your partner, family, or friends can be a trip for the books—but traveling solo? That experience is completely unmatched. Take it one step further and travel abroad, and it’s safe to say that you’ve taken your trip experience up a notch. But there are steps that you can take to ensure that you have both a positive and safe experience.

Somina is a world traveler. Embarking on both local and international trips, she has not allowed the inability to coordinate schedules to stop her from taking advantage of the opportunity to explore. She’s bold, and fearlessly connects with other adventurers who have decided to allow the world to be their playground.

We explore topics from practical tips to ensure solo traveling is an enjoyable one. Traveling as a single woman. What type of insurance you need to have when you’re traveling abroad. Living a full life as a single 30 something year old. We go deep ya’ll.

What you will take away from this episode will inspire you to truly live your best life today.

This episode is a bonus episode to the entrepreneurship series where we delve into the topic of entrepreneurship. I really began exploring this topic over the last year and a half while I was working as a travel nurse and I'm unpacking that here.

Welcome to episode #3 of season 3 of the Vintage Traveling Nurse Podcast!

Today we chat with student nurse Hailey and cover everything from her experience as a student completing her nursing program during this world pandemic infamously known as COVID-19. We also get into the “why” of how she settled on becoming a nurse as well as how she has been able to develop her social media platform while attending school. The benefit of doing this and now the possibility of her becoming a nursepreneur by leveraging her social media presence.

The world of social media has absolutely changed the game, specifically in how people navigate their careers. If done right, one can monetize their social media platforms which can then serve as additional streams of income. Access to information has been made possible with the usage of mobile devices and now more than ever, there is an increase in the demand for information.

Hailey shares useful content on her platform—and this has now opened the door for her to simultaneously work as a content creator, form brand partnerships, and continue to be an influencer in the space of nursing-- all while working as a nurse. We talked about the importance of creating additional streams of income in the first two episodes of our entrepreneurship series this season. Watching the way our world is changing and how a new normal is being established—if you weren’t experimenting with entrepreneurship or a home-based business before, it’s definitely a thought now.

Welcome to episode #2 of season 3 of the Vintage Traveling Nurse Podcast!

This is Part II of this week’s episode-- Building a Legacy featuring Jermaine Ervin of J. Ervin Collection & Bada Ding PDR dropped earlier this week. In that episode, we covered how God was leading him to shift and by listening to the voice of God, it led him to become self-employed. This has essentially allowed him to have the freedom to be fully immersed in his ministry within his church.

He is a husband and a father in addition to his outside obligations and the flexibility that he has with his time has been a direct result to taking that leap of faith in becoming an entrepreneur.

Welcome to episode #1 of season 3 of the Vintage Traveling Nurse Podcast!

Today marks the kick off of a series where over the next 8 weeks we will delve into the topic of entrepreneurship. I really began exploring this topic over the last year and a half while I was working as a travel nurse so I really want to unpack that here.

Welcome to episode #8 of season 2 of the Vintage Traveling Nurse Podcast!

This episode, I am talking about how travel nursing has opened me up to a world of entrepreneurship. I think as nurses, many of us have the unique opportunity to dive into entrepreneurship whether it be because of our schedule working 3-12 hour shifts if that’s the schedule you currently have, or if you’re working other flexible jobs like tele-medicine where you have the option of working remotely.

Watching the way our world is changing and how a new normal is being established—if you weren’t experimenting with entrepreneurship or a home-based business before, it’s definitely a thought now.

Welcome to episode #6 of season 2 of the Vintage Traveling Nurse Podcast! ⁣ ⁣

With the recent corona-virus outbreak and the limited ability to travel in combination with our recent family loss-- I decided that it would be wise to push the pause button on traveling for a while. Although, my recruiters reassured me- even if a national shutdown occurred with domestic travel- healthcare workers will still likely travel.

Travel nursing assignments are still open for the hot-spots or areas where the virus is very much prevalent. And honestly as the need increases for healthcare workers, I don’t believe that it would be feasible to avoid traveling altogether. But in doing my own due diligence to minimize travel, it just didn’t make sense to go across the country right in this season in my life.

So what exactly does this mean?⁣ ⁣ It means that while I was traveling I took each assignment one day at a time, so I will also manage this season in my life one day at a time as well. So today I am going to cover life as a travel nurse when you’re no longer traveling. What are some things that you can do in between assignments to ensure that you are maintaining so when you are ready to go back- you are set to go without skipping a beat.

Welcome to episode 4 of season 2 and another segment of Vintage Talks with my second guest ever for the podcast! ⁣ ⁣

Our guest, Thamara Jean is currently a registered nurse on a cardiac step down unit and provided a lot of insight into her experiences. I appreciated her transparency so much as we talked about managing a work-life balance as a registered nurse. We breakdown the practical side of nursing and navigating life outside of work. Or what to do once you complete your intense schooling required for your respective career, and then possibly experiencing a feeling of regret for choosing that career. How do you cope with that? Do you quit or do you move forward? We unpack all of this in today's episode.⁣ ⁣

So if travel nursing gives you the opportunity to travel all over the country and get paid while doing it, then why isn’t everyone doing it? Dealing with uncertainties and the constant state of change can be viewed as "cons" when it comes to travel nursing. So today we're talking about maintaining stability while traveling. ⁣ ⁣

Over the last several months, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about what are the steps you should take if you’re thinking about making the shift into travel nursing. Or where to even begin in the first place. ⁣ ⁣ This episode I want to dive in a little more on some key steps you want to take if you’re thinking about becoming a travel nurse. But more importantly, I want to talk about how working as a travel nurse can work as the perfect transition into life as an entrepreneur. Or at least thinking like one. ⁣ ⁣

Welcome to season 2! ⁣ ⁣

I grew up watching #8 Kobe begin his career at 17 years old. I remember when he switched to #24. I watched as he dedicated 20 years of his life to become the "greatest of all time" amongst the other basketball players. Like many others- regardless of whether or not you play or follow basketball, you may have found inspiration in how dedicated he was to his craft while maintaining his role as a family man.

I begin the episode talking about how his journey affected mine. I am praying and will continue to pray for all of the families affected by the tragic accident on Sunday.⁣ ⁣ In our pursuit of excellence- the journey can get lonely. We famously here the quote- “it’s lonely at the top” implying the higher your level of achievement and success, the lonelier it is. And though some of that can be true- there is a huge difference between loneliness and isolation.⁣ ⁣ No one ever makes it to the top completely alone. I don’t know of any greats that did it by themselves. There is very often a spouse/partner, family member, or friend that’s right there in your corner. Backing you up.
