Out of syllabus: Adulthood: Recent Episodes

Yash Mimani and Vedant Agrawal

Growing up in India most of us have had a playbook, a syllabus all of our childhood until we reach this epic period of sudden freedoms and no syllabus - adulthood. Exciting as it is, its also a confusing time when mistakes, fun and learnings are aplenty. Join us, consultant turned startup enthusiasts, as we hop, scotch and tumble our way through our 20s. Who knows, maybe we'll discover a syllabus for adulthood? DM on outofsyllabus99@gmail.com with ideas, feedback :)

We all use WhatsApp so differently. Do you create two-person groups? (Yes we know that’s typically a conversation :p). Do you archive messages? Use past messages to guilt-trip your friends?

Tune in to listen to us chat about why Vedant has 111 common groups with a colleague, how Yash has snatched back the right-to-attention by foregoing notifications and how hacks like ‘archiving’ and removal of the menacing ’last seens’ have been absolute game-changers for us :)

This episode is a tale of two very contrasting observations from the last week - the first is an insightful account of Yash's struggles when waking up and the tussle between thoughts and sensations. The second is Vedant's revelation of the 'right' way to eat one of the best foods ever - Idli. Listen in, if nothing else but to hear a hidden gem where Yash needlessly imagines up Brij-Mohan as a name of the future (we still don't know why he did it)

The idle mind is a devil's workshop. With the lockdown having paused many of his other activities, Yash has spent plenty of productive time agonising over what might happen to Kenny Sebastian's kids and how he revels in the magic of 'wet' meditation. Intrigued? Listen in!

We do this way more than I think is needed - catching up. And so, here's an attempt to deconstruct elements of a catch up I recently had. Through our discussion on this episode, we walk you through a certain structure to the catch up as we know it today, not always the same but often similar - the small talk, the status update, deep dives on common themes, current aspirations, personal recommendations and any insights/discoveries. Would love to know catch-up convo structures you've discovered :)

We've seen people do some strange things in lockdown. In this episode, we describe our experiments with the toothbrushing ritual of life. We tried to creatively bend the normal rules of brushing (e.g., brushing at night, brushing in the morning) and that led to moments of epiphany. Tune in so you know better than to try and fool yourself with brushing experimentation i.e. don't f*** with the toothbrush

Need I say more than the title? Boundaries at work are lines in the sand often changing per the moods of one's managers. In this episode, we briefly deconstruct one of Vedant's work birthday cake cutting experiences and its implications on boundaries at work

We realized that more than just learning incremental skills and mindsets, adulthood is heavily about unlearning the defaults of childhood. In this episode, we talk about unlearning a 1) tune-only approach to music, 2) teach me before you throw me approach to work, and 3) sabzi first approach to Indian meals

What we miss most and least from our (slightly) younger days. Stories including but not limited to sun defiant energy, 100% activity based friendships, boys hostel trimmer wars and the tyrannous imprint of ‘extra/lesser marks for good handwriting’.
