The fashion industry feels split right now - it's either promoting Shein or woman-owned brands that are making a difference. We think that the more people that know about the issues in fashion, the more people will shop in accordance to their values. What like it's hard? Even Kourtney Kardashian is advocating for responsible materials. Shannon Lohr is the founder of Factory45, the online business school trusted by over 500 fashion entrepreneurs since 2014. Over the years she's worked with aspiring designers, all over the globe, to launch or grow their brands in a way that’s better for people and planet. Shannon got her start in 2010 when she co-founded {r}evolution apparel, a sustainable clothing brand for female travelers and minimalists that was featured by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Forbes.com.

Norman Crowley may be the Elon Musk of Europe. I don't know anything more on brand than talking to Norman Crowley, CEO of Cool Planet Group. When I first met with Norman, we talked about his newest company Electrifii. The company converts classic luxury cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin into high performance electric cars using Tesla components. Boasting a performance specification on par with a Formula 1 racing car, these electrified cars can hit speeds of 0 to 60mph in under 2 seconds and deliver a driving range of 600km. Electrifii makes sense when the other companies in Cool Planet Group include Crowley Carbon, a carbon reduction software for buildings and Crowley Solar, solar manufacturing and development. It's a triple threat.

The Nerdwallet for sustainability, Finch started out as an informational website, studying different areas of consumer goods and making recommendations. Lizzie Horvitz, CEO of FINCH Insights, has been passionate about sustainability since the age of 16 when she lived off the grid. It was there that, depending only on wind energy and rainwater, she saw the solution of climate change before fully understanding the problem. Lizzie has taken those early beginnings and created a really powerful browser extension that works with Amazon to educate consumers on their purchasing choices. Browser extensions are not new tools BUT they are a passive opportunity to integrate education and awareness. Before Finch, Lizzie worked in supply chain and sustainability at Unilever and then became Chief Operating Officer at Muuse, a startup that aims to mitigate single-use plastics in the to-go industry. She has a BA from Middlebury College and an MBA and Master of Environmental Management from Yale University.

There is nowhere on earth Erica Ferencik won’t go to take you out of your head and into the great wild world. An award-winning novelist, Ferencik writes adventure novels featuring women who brave not only internal struggles but face extreme challenges in their environment: remote forests, steaming jungles, and desolated icescapes. GIRL IN ICE is truly a fantastic story that is compelling, chilling and addicting in the best way. Even though the events of the story are fiction, you can identify with the characters emotions rooted in family, loyalty, fear and love. Erica was raised in the wilds of upstate New York during the era when—rightly or wrongly —you could take off after school to explore and no one worried, as long as you were home by dark. Now, she lives in MetroWest Boston with her "very tolerant husband and frankly enormous Maine Coon cat."

Summer is officially here and so is travel. Something you might see or use out and about are single use utensils. Newlight Technologies is revolutionizing typically wasteful products and materials. Please welcome CEO and Co-Founder, Mark Herrema, on the Make Climate Cool Again Podcast.

Mark has spent the last 15 years developing a revolutionary new biomaterial called AirCarbon. By feeding greenhouse gasses to microorganisms found in the ocean, Newlight is able to extract AirCarbon and use it to replace plastic, leather, acetate and other fibers.

Naturally regenerative and carbon-negative, AirCarbon has been used to create Restore FoodWare, which is carried nationwide by Target and has been implemented into Shake Shack locations, and Covalent fashion. A few months ago, it was announced that the use of AirCarbon is going to be explored by Nike in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint further.

Season 3 is back with an action packed and planned season. To start the podcast off with a bang, meet Chris and Sam, two friends who met in grad school at University Of Michigan and have never actually taken a class together. They started an email newsletter sponsored by their school called On Ramp, a guide to meaningful climate action. Like most people, they have grown increasingly worried about climate change. Raging wildfires, biblical floods, and polar vortexes tend to have that effect. They wanted to be a part of the solution, but had no idea where to start. Every week, Onramp sent subscribers bite-sized actions in the form of links. These links were videos, blog posts, sustainable product recommendations, and whatever else Chris and Sam could dream up. When subscribers clicked on the links, they would earn Planet Points. Planet Points measure how much carbon dioxide you’ve sucked out of the atmosphere by engaging with On Ramp. A seriously cool concept and awesome guys to chat with - get connected with Sam and Chris via Linkedin.

Warby Parker is known as one of the OG social impact companies. But how are they reallllly doing? What does their report say? Are they misleading consumers or are they actually a good company. I was actually surprised at the significant amount of data that Warby had and could share. Not only did they share data from 2021 but also over the past five years so you could track progress. There were points where you noticed Warby Parker had to backtrack due to the COVID pandemic but I do think they tried to make up for it in other areas. I would say the biggest learning opportunities for other companies surround people and DEI opportunities. I would be interested in some of their updates in net years report on how some of their people initiatives are working out but all really progressive and designed to invest in the culture of the company. I always quote Cardi B in my presentations to college kids, "Kulture is Expensive". BUt it's so valuable and it can speed up change in the best ways. Or worst. Depending on what a company decides to invest in.

Can you guess the number one thing that makes sustainability professionals feel like hypocrites?

It's travel! In fact, I tell all of my podcast guests that they aren't allowed to use that answer to my classic question. But @goodwingstravel is changing all of that. Christian Møller-Holst is the CEO and founder of Goodwings. When you book a hotel with Goodwings, they calculate the carbon spend of your full trip. Yes, that includes your burger, and the plane trip you booked elsewhere.

You simply fill out your chosen method of transportation, and they do the rest. Seems a little too easy?? But I'll take it.

As a serial entrepreneur with a passion for impact, Christian has 20 years of experience with sustainability and CSR. Besides holding the title of CEO, Christian has studied philosophy and business, and holds a Master's Degree from Copenhagen Business, is an ex-army officer, and father of three.

I need a coffee and a new glasses prescription after reviewing Jetblue's long 2019/2020 ESG report in size 5 font. BUT I think what was most interesting to me was how Jetblue is preparing for the future by assessing their climate risks and opportunities. Also I had no idea that they were the first carbon neutral airline (for domestic flights) in the US. Jetblue also alludes to a medium term timeline for carbon pricing or a carbon tax. That's a big hint for all of us of what could be coming down the pipeline. Pun intended. There is some really great data throughout the report and highly organized charts on topics that some businesses could really learn and benefit from when it comes to preparing for the future. Did I know I was reading their future goals? No. But I do know their investment strategy and I'll take that to the bank. My biggest criticism for this report is to make a 10 page summary of this report designed for regular people who want to learn more and take sustainability lessons and apply them to their jobs. And also, carbon neutral isn't enough.

Feel free to check it out yourself if you have some free time or a family holiday you want to get out of: https://www.jetblue.com/magnoliapublic/dam/ui-assets/p/2019_2020_JetBlue_ESG_Reporting.pdf

This episode is something totally new. I read sustainability reports all the time. Every week. All the time. And I realized I started this journey by reading sustainability reports. I realize most of these reports are forty, sixty, 100+ pages and what does any of it mean? What does a good report look like?

So I decided to take one of the most progressive sustainable brands and their most recent report and dissect it. Reformation was born out of the idea that they are second best to wearing nothing. Their entire brand is about sustainability and they submit reports every quarter. So wouldn't they have a top notch report?

What to expect? We read it together and I ask many questions and add my own commentary to things I would or wouldn't do. This is the first time we are doing this - Maybe we grade them together? You tell me. Let me know your thoughts at info@makeclimatecool.com

Nomad is one of the amazing brands I connected with when I started working with the Mission Brand Alliance. I loved chatting with Sarah Shoemaker and Sofia Silva to talk more about how a small company can make sustainable decisions for a lifestyle brand. Both women are graduates from UC Santa Barbara with a background in Environmental Studies. As the company grew, and the need for leadership in sustainability initiatives arose, Sarah And Sofia have taken the reins. Sarah took the opportunity to head up implementing sustainable programs and policies to focus on office composting to carbon offsetting. Sofia is the Wholesale Director at Nomad. Outside of managing the wholesale department, Sofia promotes diversity and inclusion and oversees corporate donations. We talk about zero waste shops, the power of the carpool and how to get started with sustainability at company where you are doing something else.

Well this episode took a turn because when I scheduled it, I didn't know I would be waiting for a hurricane to hit. SO I re-recorded the intro and I think that the current conditions in additional to the discussion about data transparency for our own carbon footprint really hits home. Pun intended. Sanchali Pal was such an inspiration to talk to because she has created a real tool that we can all use on a regular basis to understand our impact. Sanchali Pal, CEO and founder of Joro, tracked her carbon footprint for years on a spreadsheet during grad school before realizing she needed to build a tool to make the process easier for everyone. Joro takes spedning data on our credit cards and applies a carbon equivalent to each purchase so that we can track our impact on a more regular basis, engage in challenges to make reductions and also apply offsets. She attended Princeton University an studied Economics before heading to Harvard Business School. We nearly crossed path at Tesla as interns before she started Joro. Sanchali raised a $1 million to build Joro from Sequoia Capital, a major venture capital group that has backed the likes of Airbnb, Doordash and Dropbox. Get your app on.

When companies create product, they make an impact on the planet. Some companies care more about this than others and go beyond packaging. They also invest in their impact on the community. Brett Zundel, Co-Owner of Loon Outdoors, is part of driving a mission to make fly-fishing more sustainable for the industry and the planet. As 1% for the Planet members, we talk about the organizations that Loon is working with to drive positive change. Brett shares his story of his love of nature and sharing it with his own kids and how that has affected his perspective on the environment. We also talk about the controversy around hatcheries and why we need to protect our fish populations. Loon Outdoors is based in Ashland, Oregon and sells fly-fishing products.

What's the difference between shampoo and ibuprofen?

You have a favorite shampoo and you can pick the packaging. Over The Counter (OTC) products are something we use to manage our cough or our allergies but we end up with a ton of waste. Cabinet Health is making better packaging for products by developing a refillable and compostable system so you can feel better without feeling bad about the planet.

Russell Gong is a co-founder of OTC brand Cabinet. He and his co-founder Achal met nearly a decade ago combating social inequality international communities. Russ is a former social entrepreneur and US National Guard, Infantry, worked in community empowerment. They share a deep curiosity about how medicine is made and more importantly how to make it better for people. Their brand was born as a result of their vision for offering the world a more transparent and sustainable medicine. Why does it matter?

Clubhouse is changing. the. game. I can connect to so many professionals and industry leaders in moments. It's an educational platform as much as it's a communication platform.

Will Gadd is a living legend in the truest sense. Year after year, he continually pushes the boundaries of ice climbing and, even after having won every major title from the World Cup to the Winter X Games, he continues to push the envelope. Will has also broke the world distance record on a paraglider not once, but three times. He was also the first person to cross the US by paraglider after a gruelling seven-week trip. In 2014, he made several first ascents of Kilimanjaro’s dwindling ice towers. As the glacier rapidly disappears from climate change, he returned in 2020 to make one last ascent. Red Bull sponsored his 2020 trip and documented the current conditions that change everything.

Dominic Frongillo's story begins with making history as the youngest person ever elected to serve on the City Council in Caroline, New York, and one of the youngest deputy mayors in the U.S. When fracking threatened New York, Dominic organized hundreds of bipartisan local elected officials to ban fracking statewide and transition away from fossil fuels, inspiring governments around the world to ban fracking.

As a 7-time delegate to the UN climate talks, Dominic co-founded Elected Officials to Protect America to mobilize state and local lawmakers in 50 states for a Green New Deal and federal Climate Emergency Plan. Trained by Al Gore, he was awarded the inaugural Roddenberry Fellowship alongside Occupy Wall Street Founder Micah White and Black Lives Matter founder Alicia Garza.

His work has been covered in more than 300 news stories including CNN, The New York Times, Forbes, The Guardian, and BBC News.

Colin McIntosh is Founder & CEO of Sheets & Giggles™, a fast-growing direct-to-consumer brand in the $12B US bedding space. Launched in May 2018 with a nearly $300,000 crowdfunding campaign, S&G became one of the few companies to make $1M in sales in its first 12 months.

S&G places an emphasis on doing good and having fun, especially with sustainably made products and socially responsible business practices. The company's eucalyptus lyocell bedding uses up to 96% less water to make than cotton sheeting, and uses no insecticides or pesticides. The company also plants a tree for every order – planting nearly 20,000 trees in the US from 2019 sales alone – and regularly donates to causes that their community cares about, like the $40,000 S&G recently contributed to COVID–19 emergency relief in Colorado. As a millennial and an inaugural member of Good Business Colorado, Colin also regularly lobbies for progressive issues and causes with a group of over 200 progressive CO business owners.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Peter Olah has been a life-long environmentalist, capitalist, and ardent believer that organizations (for-profit and non-profit) have a civic and moral duty to do well by their stakeholders while ensuring sustainable practices for the natural world. The chief reason that mankind is in this perilous state is due to the prevalence of market pricing, and the failure to consider the true cost of doing business. This global issue is what led me to pursue a career in the clean energy sector to shift our economy's addiction to fossil fuels towards renewables that are superior in cost, naturally replenishing, and are not nearly as harmful to us and our natural world.

“Environmental justice is the intersection of both social justice and environmentalism, where the inequity in environmental degradation is also considered.” - Leah Thomas

With everything going on I felt it was important to talk a little bit more about what environmental justice and racism, my experience recognizing it in the industry and about how minorities, specifically black people are significantly impacted. We talk about the water crisis in Flint Michigan, and Superfund and Brownfield sites near low-income housing.

College sophomore and student athlete, McKenna Haz created a line of athletic wear made from recycled plastic bottles. She started the company, Seaav, only a year ago and it's taken off since she won a local CT business pitch competition. She is passionate about sports and protecting the ocean and it only made sense to create a product that beautifully intertwined her interests. Each purchase contributes to ocean clean-up efforts equivalent to one pound of plastic. Eventually, she hopes to use the plastic found in the clean-up efforts to make the leggings. Lost Pines Yaupon may be the cure we are all looking for when it comes to the coronavirus. That and a healthy lifestyle. I sat down with Jason and Heidi, the founders of Lost Pines Yaupon Tea. Years ago Jason went down an internet rabbit hole about a fascinating little plant, the yaupon holly. He learned about the long history of Native Americans roasting the yaupon leaves and using it as an energizing drink. Jason spent years experimenting with different methods of harvesting, curing and roasting yaupon until he came up with the methods being used today to make the best yaupon tea around. I sat down with Federico Baroni to talk about WALTIC watches, how coffee shops could recycle better and why using recycled bags is the most important part of the watches design. WALTIC is the first wristwatch ever made of recycled plastic bags. It's casing is made of recycled plastic (100% from plastic bags, LDPE). Federico, being a sailor saw all the plastic floating around the world and decided to do something. WALTIC started retrieving plastic bags from polluted rivers in Córdoba, Argentina, recycling it, keeping it away from rivers and nature. Go check out their kickstarter that ends on March 12.
