Today's episode is really special. I recorded the interview with Wizz Air CEO József Váradi in Cluj at Aviation-Event on 31st March 2022.
In a short but very dynamic interview I asked Mr. Váradi about Wizz Air's expectations for the upcoming summer season, their plans for London Gatwick, their ultimate growth plan for 2030 and I also asked him a bit personal questions at the very end.
Let me also apologize for a slightly lower sound quality of this interview as it was recorded in Cluj Airport Terminal during a conference, but I still hope you will enjoy my quick chat with one of the most respected industry leaders in the last 2 decades in Europe.
David Perez is the CEO at Turismo de Tenerife. This episode was recorded on site, in David's office in Santa Cruz.
With David we discussed how the tourism industry, so vital for the island, performed in 2021, what’s the focus and the key strategic markets for Tenerife this year, which stereotypes about the destination they plan to tear down and also what’s new about a very interesting project of Canarian Airways, now called Lattitude Hub.
This is probably the most important podcast I've ever done and definitely the most personal one. Even though the topic is not related to aviation directly.
Following the Russian brutal military invasion to Ukraine, like many people in Europe, I got stuck and paralysed by an intensive mixture of feelings. Anger, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, sadness... All of this was of course multiplied by the fact that I live around 80 km from Slovak-Ukrainian border. Also, it just felt wrong to me to go back to do business as usual. I figured out I need to talk to someone. To someone wiser than me. So I reached out to Claus Raasted, as he’s one of the most inspiring people I know. Claus is a coach at McKinsey, a consultant, an expert on innovation, storytelling, communication and many other things, author of 34 books. As kind as Claus is, he very quickly agreed to have a chat with me and I thought that maybe there are people in the AviaDev community that are going through something similar like I am. So we recorded our chat and this is it.
It definitely helped me to listen to what Claus said about why we need to come back to live our lives both privately and professionally. If we live in the EU or NATO, we are the lucky ones. There are no bombs falling on our heads, we don’t need to run away from our homes. So let’s go on and at the same time, if we can and when we can, let's help our Ukrainian brothers and sisters.

A lot has changed since then: Play has already announced 3 destinations in the US which will be inaugurated in the upcoming months. My guest today is Laurent Donceel, senior policy director at Airlines for Europe. With Laurent we discussed all things about aviation´s focus on sustainability. Laurent highlighted his takeaways from the transport day at COP26, we touched on forming of the aviation Climate Ambition Coalition, who´s holding back the Single European Sky and where we are with Destination 2050.
My guest today is Marina Bylinsky, head of sustainability at ACI Europe.
ACI Europe is association that groups over 500 airports in 55 countries that facilitate over 90% of commercial air traffic in Europe. In response to the Climate Emergency, in June 2019 ACI Europe´s members committed to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions for operations under their control by 2050, without offsetting.
The main topic of today´s conversation with Marina is Airport Carbon Accreditation - the only institutionally-endorsed, global carbon management certification programme for airports, developed at ACI.
With Marina we discuss the whole process which the airports that join this initiative go through, how successful the project has been so far and why airports that are not part of it yet should consider joining it.
In the light of the recent events AviaDev team talks to Dirk Singer, Head of Research at Simpliflying who has been covering the implications of the pandemic on the world of travel since the early days.
Also today, Dirk is very actively commenting end explaining the current situation on Linkedin and also on Simpliflying corona weekly newsletter.
On 25th November we heard the first news about a new variant of covid-19 which was discovered by the scientists in South Africa and later it was named Omicron by WHO. What followed was very quick reaction of the international community to ban the flights from South Africa and other African countries.
With Dirk we are discussing the current situation, what we do know about Omicron on 30 November 2021, how effective the travel bans are and what we can expect in the coming weeks.
Hans Jørgen Elnæs is an independent aviation analyst based in Oslo with rich experience from the aviation world including work for Ryanair and Qatar Airways.
Hans is also a great friend of AviaDev and one of our SkyHeroes. This time we sat together and discussed some of the hot topics from the world of aviation, including Lufthansa repaying its debt to the German government, which trends could Hans see as a result of the Dubai Airshow, what´s going on in the sky above Scandinavia and much more. This is the second part of my discussion with Pete. In the previous episode we talked about his aviation journey, the transition process from a route development role at LCY to Managing Director position at NQY and about the once in a lifetime experience of organizing the arrivals and departures of various international delegations for the G7 summit earlier this year.
Today we are going to talk about the recovery process at Cornwall Airport Newquay, where is the airport now in terms of its network, why Pete and his team even had to say "no" to some airlines that wanted to come to Newquay, what´s Newquay´s approach towards sustainability and how Pete sees the future of this regional airport.
Pete Downes is a managing director at Cornwall Airport Newquay. We´ve all had experienced interesting 18 months to say the least, but what Pete himself and together with his team at Newquay Airport went through is just fascinating. Our discussion was a bit longer than usually, so I decided we´ll split it into two episodes. So this is part one of the interview with Pete where we discuss his aviation journey, the transition process from a route development role at London City Airport to the managing director position at Newquay and I couldn´t miss the opportunity to ask Pete about the G7 summit and how was the experience like for the whole team to take care of the Air Force One and the other international delegations landing in Cornwall.
Our guest today is Juliana Kiraly, Marketing Manager Europe at Embraer. Juliana has already enjoyed many years at Embraer working on several different positions. In the interview we covered several interesting topics such as the recent certification of the Embraer E2-190 for steep approach at London City Airport, project of the new turboprop aircraft which Embraer is developing and also how they approach sustainability at Embraer.
In this interview with AviaDev Europe´s Managing Director Juraj Toth, Nick Ashton, Head of Partnerships and Industry Affairs at DOHOP shares his personal journey through which he developed true passion for creating partnerships and connections within the aviation world. Inevitably, he ended up at DOHOP where he can work even closer with various industry palyers using virtual interlining and intermodality as some of the solutions for better future for the whole travel ecosystem.
Ferenc Kis works as a business development director at RSK Group, an environmental consultancy firm from UK. Prior to that Ferenc spent 8 years at Budapest Airport developing and executing airport´s sustainability strategy as head of environmental protection.
Naturally, we spoke about sustainability a lot, especially where it links to aviation and Ferenc´s experience. We discussed NetZero2050, hydrogen vs. electric and other related topics.
Especially airport managers can find a lot of inspiration in this episode in case they are considering making their airport business carbon neutral.
This time I spoke with Becca Rowland, partner at MIDAS Aviation, which is the engine behind AviaDev Consult a boutique consultancy we created together.
The team at MIDAS Aviation recently prepared a report which is titled No Blue Skies. What Becca and her colleagues are saying is that the demand for air travel is not likely to pick up until the second half of the year, at the earliest. So we discussed not just the outcomes of the report but also the reasoning behind it and what are Becca´s expectations about recovery.

This time I had great discussion with two members of the team at FoxATM: Elena Skalovskaia, Business Development Manager and Aviation Consultant and Vincent Lambercy, freelance air traffic management consultant.
Elena and Vincent shared with us not just their personal aviation journeys and the background of FoxATM, but also a very interesting story of how they started to work together. There are some insightful lessons there especially for young aspiring aviators but also for those of us who´ve been with the industry for a couple of years or so.
Then the main topic we touched was the ATM triangle where airlines, airports and ATM providers are not always on the same page. Last but not least, I also asked Elena and Vincent about the project of Single European Sky and why is it so important.
Our guest today is Thomas Reynaert, managing director at A4E - Airlines for Europe, an airline association with headquarters in Brussels. In the interview Thomas shared with us the story of A4E – how and why it was founded back in 2016. 5 years later A4E represents a very strong industry voice covering around 70% of European Air traffic.
The major topic of our discussion with Thomas was Destination2050 – an initiative with the ultimate goal to reach net zero carbon emissions from European aviation by 2050. A4E is one of the industry players behind this project and Thomas shared with us why he thinks it is not just important and challenging but also a very realistic task.
For this very special episode we have a very special guest: the one and only Miguel Angel Perez, Brand and markets director at Visit Valencia. Miguel was our very first guest on the show back in May 2018, so almost 3 years ago. Today we have him back on to discuss what´s behind the strategy for sustainable tourism development in Valencia, what does it mean for Valencia as a destination to be recognized as the healthiest city in the world to live in and what are Miguel´s expectations about the upcoming summer season.

It´s exciting times for the whole team there as they are getting ready to launch their operations in a couple of days, on the 30th March 2021. Launching a new airline is enormously complex task in any period of time, but now in the middle of pandemic I can not even imagine how difficult it must be. But Matteo seems to be very enthusiastic and if there´s something we need right now it is enthusiasm, positivity and new fresh energy.

Charlotte Hardenbol works as a Head of Programs and Solutions at the Dutch company SkyNRG, the pioneer and global leader for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) solutions with a mission to make SAF the new global standard.
In the interview Charlotte explained how important the support of the Refuel EU initiative was in setting up a new Alcohol to Jet facility on which SkyNRG cooperates with US company Lanzatech and their daughter company Lanzajet.
Charlotte also introduced new exciting initiative called BOARD NOW which is a way of SkyNRG inviting everybody to join the movement of scaling up the SAF production and make it widely available.
We´re starting new year of AviaDev Insight Europe Podcast with a former member of the AviaDev team Ged Brown. Ged runs his own business, Low Season Traveller, in something what´s possibly the worst time ever to start a new business in this sector. While talking to Ged I was thinking about a famous quote attributed to Winston Churchill, which goes like this: "Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm."
The energy and passion which is still in Ged´s voice despite all the negative storm himself, his business and the whole sector has been through is impressive and very contagious indeed.

After 11,5 years of working for Budapest Airport, most of that time as a CCO, Kam Jandu has left Budapest on 15 December 2020. But couple of days prior to that I got the chance to talk to him and also to ask him some very interesting questions submitted in advance by members of our community.
The interview is really great and Kam shared lots of his wisdom, great experience and also one little secret: he once made a pizza for Whitney Houston!
My guest today is Kevin Cullinane, Head of Communications at Cork Airport. Despite enormous negative impact of the pandemic on the whole aviation sector in Ireland, Kevin still sees a silver lining. Government´s strict position on protecting the health of the nation paid its dividends as Ireland has one of the lowest infection rates in Europe. Recently government also recognized the massive challenges the sector has to face. Kevin shared with us how they plan to invest those EUR 22M they will receive from the state next year. Most importantly, despite the ongoing pandemic, Cork Airport still supports the economy of this open and global city with vital connectivity to strategically important destinations, demonstrating the crucial role regional airports play and will play in the economic recovery.

This is our episode no. 89. and it´s a very special one. The reason I´m saying is special is that I don´t have just one guest. I have two: Max Oldorf and Thomas Jaeger and they are the founders of ch-aviation. On today´s show they shared a lot of stories from the history of this company which early beginnings go back to 1998. Some of the stories are incredible, some are even hard to believe. But one thing is certain: what ch-aviaiton is built on is pure love for the aviation. And I guess in these difficult times, we need to get a reminder every now and then about how great our industry is and that it´s many times really fun to work in.
Jan Palmer is the CEO & Chairman of the management board at Xfly. Back in October this year, Jan was elected also as the President of the European Regions Airline Association. So we naturally spoke about the future of European regional aviation in the post pandemic world. Jan also explained the business model of Xfly being the dedicated capacity provider which is something very common in the US, but not that much in Europe.
My guest today is Andreas Slettvoll, CEO & founder at Chooose. Chooose is a Norwegian company that delivers solutions making climate action available for everyone. Recently Wizz Air partnered with Chooose so travellers flying Wizz Air can now offset their carbon footprint using Chooose. Andreas explained carbon offsetting is not the only one solution for climate change – it´s just one of several tools enabling us to act now. There were also two words Andreas deliberately used a lot – “frictionless” and “transparency” as they are crucially important in what Chooose does. Last but not least, Andreas is convinced that shaming is a terrible way for driving change so we definitely shouldn´t be ashamed of flying.

My guest today is Marja Aalto, Senior Specialist in Aviation at Visit Tampere. Marja explains what makes Tampere Airport now the 2nd busiest in Finland, how does the cooperation between Visit Tampere and Finavia look like and what you can expect when you visit this charming city. By the way, did you know Tampere is considered as the world sauna capital? Neither did I :)
Máté Bence Tóth works as a Key Account Manager for the Travel Content Acquisition team at Kiwi.com. In addition to that, Máté and his 2 friends have their own aviation podcast in Hungarian language, called Hetes Terminal. And thanks to this, Mate was able to experience a truly historical event – long awaited opening of new Berlin Brandenburg Airport, first hand in Berlin couple of days ago. Today Mate shares with us not just his impression from the opening ceremony, but also his experience from the airport itself.

We obviously touched on that a little bit and we also discussed how bad we are in promoting some of the miraculous solutions aviation industry has brought to the mankind.
