In this sermon, Clint Walker finishes the book of Acts, which concludes the writings of Luke. Additionally, four congregants share their testimonies of how Jesus changed their lives.
The church contends for the ongoing proclamation of the gospel at every stage in history and in every place on the map. At our time and in our place, the most compelling alternative gospel is the progressive gospel. This content engages this other gospel, asking "what is it?" and "why is it compelling?" and "what does Scripture have to say about these things?"

Tim Carpenter takes us on a tour of some major verses in the book of Romans and then, we hear a truly encouraging testimony from one of our Exit members.
We are a people commissioned into a world that is hostile towards God and should therefore be prepared.
Sin violates relationships and the pursuit of restoration often includes confession and forgiveness. Join us as we unpack the what, why, who, and how of both confession and forgiveness.
In this beautiful passage, we see Jesus expressing his affection for his follows. He "earnestly desired" to have the last supper with them, and it was finally time. During the meal, Jesus showed how the passover that happened during Israel's time in Egypt was actually a precursor to his death and resurrection on behalf of his people--to save them from experiencing the death they deserve. Last, Jesus promises that he and his followers will have another communion meal together when his kingdom comes in fullness.
In this passage, we see Judas, one of Jesus' own disciples, betray Jesus for the sake of money. He turned against the very master that had selflessly taught him for years. What led him to do this? And how can we learn from his mistakes?
In this passage, Jesus instructs his disciples on how to live expectantly, even when we have every reason to fear. We are to keep watch and pray.
Jesus predicts the pending destruction of Jerusalem accurately to his disciples. In doing this, He gives the Church some timeless principles about following Him. See Jesus, expect persecution, hope in His promises, be all in.
In this passage, Jesus warns of the character and content of false teachers. Jesus loves his followers so much, that he warns them, apparently within earshot of the false teachers themselves, to avoid them because they are leading his people astray. In this passage, the author speaks to his son about God's good design for sex as well as its cheap substitutes. The Christian sex ethic is profoundly different from that of the world around us. And while sexual expression outside of God's design appears so incredibly attractive, it will always ultimately lead to death. God's ways are good and pure, and he longs to depend on him to meet our needs. Listen in as Tyler Shirley unpacks the Word for us.
In this passage, Forrest Brown explains the this difficult passage surrounding the seven things that God hates. He addresses the question of how a good and loving God could hate at all. And finally, he adderesses how we are to live in line with what pleases God, not out of a desire to earn God's affection but because of the cross of Christ.
In the first chapter of this new book (for Exit) Habakkuk cries out in desperation and frustration to the Lord that his own people are acting unjustly with seemlingly no consequences. How do we respond when the Lord seems to be silent in our pain and suffering? How can we trust that the Lord is still good and all powerful when he's silent in our suffering?
Forrest Brown takes us through two sections of Psalm 119 to show us all over again that our proper response to the word of God is to be people of Hope even in the face of opposition, people who have the words of God in our mouths, people who live out His words, and people who delight in them.
Forrest takes us into a moment of David's life when he confronts a time of darkness by putting his hope in God. Are times of depression a mark of immaturity? Or is something bigger going on?
Forrest Brown preaches through Psalm 5, which records David's desperate cry that the Lord would keep him walking in righteousness.
In this Psalm, Forrest Brown hightlights the way we were created to allow the Lord to work in an through us in all that we do. If we simply become laborers for the Lord but neglect heart-connection with him, we work in vain. But when we plug into the life that he gives and serve him in view of his grace for us, we experience abundant life.
Is your God too small? Most of the spiritual problems that we have today—like apathy, lack of emotion, doubt and insecurity—are the result of us minimizing God. Even as Christians, our hearts calcify over time, just as plaque builds up on teeth, and the dentist has to scrape it off. Similarly, we as believers need regular encounters with the living God to remind us of just how spectacularly massive he is. In Psalm 36, the author, David spends considerable time describing polar opposites in order to provide CLARITY around God’s character and the life he offers. This Psalm is a call to fear the Lord and encounter him regularly.
In this Psalm, David describes the Lord in his might and power, using imagery of a mighty storm. And this kind of power makes God worthy of all praise. The beauty of it is that his power also makes him powerful enough to abide in when our lives face their own storms and troubles since he sits above it all on his throne. Tim Carpenter preaches on Psalm 110, which focuses on the messiah as both the coming king and priest forever. How can one person fulfill both aspects of these prophecies unless is it Jesus Christ?
Forrest Brown preaches on this passage as Jesus now asks the religious leaders a challenging theological question. But unlike the religious leaders, Jesus doesn't ask out of insecurity, his desire is to prove that he is the Messiah, and he is worthy to prase and to trust with their lives.
In this text, the Sadducees take a theological swing at Jesus, only to come up short (just like the chief priests and and teachers of the law before them). The difference was that the Sadducees held a liberal view of the Old Testament text, which skewed their view of reality. Jesus corrects their thinking by using an Old Testament Scripture that they did respect. Amazingly, Jesus' argument was based upon the verb tense of Exodus 3:6, which means that not only is the story of Scripture true, but even the verb tense is inspired by God. In this way, we see the brilliance of Jesus and the necessity to treasure every piece of Scripture, even down to the details and verb tenses.
When religious leaders bait Jesus into a trap, pitting him between the Romans and the Old Testament law, Jesus threads the needle perfectly. He effortlessly responds to them in perfect wisdom while also challenging them to reconsider their own relationship with government and political power. This timeless teaching also weighs on us today in significant ways.
Paul is at the end of his life and writing a letter to his disciple, Timothy. In it, Paul exhorts Timothy to keep the faith, be on mission, prize & preach the Word, and live for what matters on Judgment Day. This message is particularly pertinent to those that we send out of our midst into the world, as a community with a large portion of college students.
The religious leaders question Jesus' authority, and Jesus, as he often does, answers them with a question of his own. Forrest Brown exegetes this passage, focusing on the authority of Jesus, the conflict with Jesus, and what we do with him.

This is a time to learn what the gospel is, how to tell others about it, and what to do if it is being received well or poorly. We know that people have a lot of questions when it comes to sharing the gospel. Please come prepared with any questions you may have. Also, if you don' know how to share the gospel with a friend, feel free to simply bring them to this class.
In this passage, we see the complexity of Jesus' emotions as he receives praise, weeps over Jerusalem and clears out the temple in anger. All of this points to someone that is both fully human (like us) and yet wholly separate (receives due praise as God). Additionally, we see the heart of Jesus, who truly and deeply cares about people.
As Jesus narrows the focus of his ministry toward Jerusalem (and the cross), he overtly prophesies his disciples that he will be abused, killed and raise again on the third day. And yet while he is looking into the eyes of his own death, he takes the time to respond to a blind beggar and a tax collector. This shows us Jesus' tremendous patience, his care for seemingly insignificant in society as well as traitorous sinners (whom we often think of as the worst of the worst). If Jesus takes time out of his schedule for these two people, does he not care for the same today? This passage shows us that no one is too insigificant to receive Jesus' affection and that no one is too sinful to experience his grace.
The story of the rich, young ruler is both widely known and often misunderstood. The Holy Spirit found it fitting to pair the stories of Jesus inviting little children to come to him while the wealthy ruler walked away in sadness. In order to come to Jesus, we must become like little children with nothing in our hands, nothing that we depend on for our righetousness. The stark contrast between these two (children and those with wealth/power) is a warning to us to trust fully in Jesus' life, death and resurrection to save us.
What do we actually trust in for our righteousness--in our own ability to perform or in Jesus' performance on our behalf? The longer we are a Christian, the better we get at hiding how we depend on ourselves, which makes this passage all the more timely.
God's desire for his people is that they continually come to him in prayer and not lose heart. In this passage, Jesus uses the example of a sinful judge's treatment of a vulnerable widow in order to contrast that with God's character as a perfect judge. And Jesus is in search of those that have faith to continually plead for God's kingdom and justice to come in fullness.
What is the kingdom of God? Jesus talked about it more than anyone. He responds to the Pharisees by telling them that the kingdom is already here and yet it's also to come (some call this the already/not yet kingdom). In this text, Jesus gives us clues as to what the end times will look like and he challenges his hearers to be all-in for the kingdom.
Tim Carpenter preaches a Christmas message on Christ's presence being the real gift of Christmas. He walks through a biblical theology, from Genesis to Revelation, showing that's God's design was always to be with his people and that even now (prior to heaven) we can walk with Jesus each day.
In this passage, the apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith. We can see that faith is the foundation for sanctification. And faith, when it is carried through, results in gratitude for all that the Lord has done for us. At the end of our best days, we are still dependent children on the work of the Spirit in us. And we serve a God that generously gives his Spirit to help us.
We invited Bob Petty, our District Superintendent, to preach at our Sunday gathering because of the significance of the day--we commissioned college students graduating from Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor Universities. Additionally, we commissioned Dave Lloyd, our bookkeeper of 7 years, and we also ordained our pastor Forrest Brown. Bob preached on the mission to which we are all called to complete--the high call to be ambassadors of another kingdom, to make disciples of all nations.
Jesus gives some of his strongest language in all of Scripture as he addresses sin, temptation and faith.
Commonly referred to as " the rich man and Lazarus," this parable sums up that last four chapters worth of Jesus' focus on money. His emphasis is to highlight how short-lived finances are in light of eternity. Rather, we are to spend our lives in pursuit of Jesus' kingdom.
Jesus continues pressing into the Pharisees and challenging their values by how they approach money. This shows us that money reveals our true values. Jesus' concern is that they (and us) will justify their own actions and deceive even themselves into thinking that they are in right relationship with God when they were actually out of alignment with him.
As disciples of Christ, we submit all things to Him. This includes what we believe and how we engage in this world. The word of God says a lot about the value of human life and how we are to treat one another. Abortion is common in our nation and our culture is passionate about it. Between the clarity of the word of God and the emphasis of our culture, it is fitting that we take the time to thoroughly think through the implications of our submission to Jesus in regards to abortion. This was recorded during a Discipleship Training session at Exit Church.
In this puzzling parable, Jesus tells the story of a rich man and one of his managers who was deceptive and dishonest. And while there is no overt protagonist in the story (both the rich man and the manager have significant character flaws), Jesus purposefully includes this story in his teaching to provide picture for us to learn how to walk in wisdom in our finances. This is incredibly relevant today as it speaks into the need for all Christians to use their finances intentionally with prayer and discernment to move forward the kingdom of God.
In this iconic text of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the prodigal son, Jesus puts on display the heart of God towards repentant sinners. For those that have been a Christian for some time, this paradign-shifting text can seem mundane and commonplace. But when we truly see that it is aimed at us, it completely tranforms the way that we think about God, his affection for us and how we view ourselves in light of his affection.
Unlike cults and secret societies, Jesus is overtly clear and up front with what it entails to follow him. He is open about the fact that the cost to follow him is incredibly high. It costs us everything that we have, even the people and things that we have the highest affections for. And when understood properly, this incredibly high cost is a good thing--it helps us see God as holy as he truly is, it protects us from hypocrisy, and it keeps our eyes on what is eternal.
In this passage, Jesus is at a dinner party hosted by a prominent Pharisee. Jesus challenges him and the others at the party, telling them to focus on what is eternal instead of simply being preoccupied with day-to-day life and getting married and making a living. While those are good gifts from God, they are never meant to be the heaviest thing in the room–the thing that our lives orient around. Jesus is telling the religious leaders (and us) that he is the only thing worthy of being the top priority in our lives.
The religious leaders continually invited Jesus to dinner parties and watched him to see how he would act. Jesus takes the opportunity to address the issue of pride and how to put it to death.
Have you ever wondered why God doesn't do grandiose miracles everyday in our lives? In this passage, Forrest Brown preached about how Jesus advances His kingdom through small things--through the woman with the bent back, the parable of the mustard seed, and the parables of the yeast. Who would have imagined that in a matter of a couple thousand years, God's kingdom would advance from one man, to eleven, to millions/billions today? It may be an indication that our expectations need to realign with the Father's will.
Scripture speaks to the concept of repentance quite a bit. But what does it actually mean? Forrest Brown preaches on the topic, addressing many of the misconceptions about repentance and also reveals God's heart for people in the process.
We're finding in Luke chapter 12 that Jesus has some harsh and direct words for his listeners. And this week's passage is no different. Why did Jesus bring fire to the earthy? Why did he say that he came to divide families? For a culture that primarily sees Jesus as a soft, gentle man, these words can seem startling. Yet, when we unpack them, we realize how good Jesus is and how his words are for our good.
Earlier in Luke 12, we observe Jesus addressing the issue of money, and now he furthers his emphasis--not simply on money but on the entire orientation of one's life. Jesus is calling his followers to stay alert, ready and pursuing the mission at all times until the end of our lives.
One of the topics that Jesus speaks about the most is money, and his words are difficult to accept and apply. Because his kingdom is not about amassing personal wealth but rather himself and his glory. And when we make our lives about him, we trade in our earthly currency for real, eternal wealth. What is God's will for my life? Many times we desire that God's direction for our lives would be as simple as shaking a magic 8 ball. And while the Lord sometimes speaks to us and gives us clear direction, his normative method of communication is through his Word. And, in the words of Solomon, God's will is that we dig into his Word and walk in the path of wisdom, not the path of folly/sin.
Forrest Brown introduces a new book--Proverbs--specifically focusing on how wisdom always starts with the fear of the Lord.
This last section of Joel focuses on the final Day of the Lord that is to come--where Christ will return to judge the world.
In part 2 of this 3 part series in Joel, the author focueses on the Day of the Lord as it applies to Jesus' life, death and resurrection.
New book! Forrest Brown starts the book of Joel, which will only be a 3-week series. In this passage, the author, Joel, calls his people to repentance (even himself) because of the coming judgment of God. In particular, the focus is on grieving/lamenting of the brokenness of the relationship with the Lord.
In this Psalm, elder Muchun Yin preaches on where we find our refuge. Peter preaches a portion of this Psalm in Acts chapter 2, showing us that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Psalm. Therefore, Jesus was the refugee that left the glory of heaven to sacrifice himself to redeem us from our sin. And the result of his sacrifice is eternal pleasure at the right hand of the Father. Likewise, we must also become refugees in the sense that we do not trust in ourselves but rather in the Lord. And just like Jesus, we can enjoy pleasures forevermore.
David wrote Psalm 24 to celebrate the Lord as the King of Glory. The Creator-God is the King of Glory and has come down to dwell in the midst of the city of man. How do we respond to him? Listen as elder Tim Carpenter preaches on this Psalm of celebration.
Have you ever asked if Christianity is worth it? When terrible things happen to Jesus followers and good things seem to always happen to those that oppose God, it's common for even the most devoted followers to question God's goodness. In this Psalm the author asks a similar question. And ultimately he finds his conclusion in God's character and closeness.
In this Psalm, David offers to us a metaphor for how we are to approach the Lord--as a weaned child, contented with simply being close to his mother. In this short passage, David denounces pride in himself and confident hope in the Lord to meet his deepest needs.
Psalm 137 a difficult psalm for a number of reasons. It is a lament in very dark times for the psalmist. It also contains dark language. Listen in as Forrest unpacks the last few verses of the Psalm that represent the hope for a future that is better than the present for the psalmist, yet contain some very dark language about the death of children.
JC Herring preaches on how we are to follow the Psalmist David in tasting and seeing that the Lord is good.
God created us not simply for the purpose of obedience but also for us to delight in him. In this sermon, Forrest Brown preaches on how to share the disposition of the Psalmist in enjoying and delighting in the Lord.
In part 2 of this passage, Forrest hones in on the concept of the fear of God. While our culture (and even the church) has neglected the fear of God in recent decades, Jesus points to it as a foundational piece of life. He attributes the fear of God and His affections for you as the antidotes to other fears we have in life--fear of people, poverty, the future, etc. Listen in as God's word challenges us to fear him more.
Jesus specifically warns His disciples about Hypocrisy in Luke 12. Do you find that you are ever tempted to hide things about yourself from certain people? What is the through line of your life? What is the thing that you're chasing after? Is it a title, a job or a certain salary/level of comfortability? On this year's Don't Waste Your Life Sunday, we commissioned out roughly 75 graduating college seniors to the far ends of the earth and encouraged them to make their lives about making Jesus known.

Have you ever been frustrated with the hypocrisy that is found throughout Christianity and the church? In a recent faith poll among the Exit congregation, hypocrisy was listed as the number one frustration with Christianity. As we see in this Scriptural text, Jesus is even more outraged by it--enough to confront it at personal cost. However, hypocrisy isn't something that simply out in the world; if we're honest, it's also in us. Join us as we sit under Jesus' teaching regarding hypocrisy.
In this passage, Jesus says that He will not give any additional signs to the people who are asking Him for them. Do you ever find yourself asking for a sign or proof in order to validate the existence of God or whether Christianity is true? We are finishing our 2-week series on the topic of prayer, based on Jesus' teaching in Luke 11. In the text, Jesus emphasizes the value of persistence in prayer as well as the goodness of his character in giving the Holy Spirit to those who ask him. The topic brings up the question--what do you think about the idea of God giving you a greater portion of his Spirit in response to your prayers? It seems that everyone struggles with prayer one way or another. While it's often challenging to sustain a regular prayer life, Jesus welcomes us into a close relationship with God--where believers are invited to address God as our personal Father. And Jesus also gives us a model that we can base our own prayers from. Listen in as Tyler Shirley preaches on the Lord's prayer out of Luke chapter 11.
Forrest Brown preaches on the story of Mary and Martha out of Luke 10. In the story, Mary is sitting at Jesus' feet while Martha is "distracted with much serving (vs. 40)." And Jesus corrects Martha by saying that Mary has chosen the better option--that is, to be with him. In our world of accomplishment and productivity, this same principle falls on us as well. How can we effectively sit at Jesus' feet today?
Forrest Brown preaches on the famous story of the Good Samaritan. When a lawyer asks Jesus (what appears to be) a simple question, Jesus utilizes the opportunity to not simply provide an answer but to entirely redirect the lawyer's focus. The man's question was "who do I need to love," and Jesus shows that the correct heart disposition is one that says "who CAN I love?" This begs the question for us--what do the kind of questions I ask Jesus say about my heart towards the Lord? What are better questions I can ask?
The Cause of Rejoicing: in this sermon, Alexander "Z" Breytenbach (pastor of Ruah Church in Indianapolis, IN) emphasizes where true joy comes from and where we should look to have joy. In the passage, the 72 followers that had previously been commissioned out to preach about the kingdom, return to Jesus, full of joy and excitement at the signs and wonders that they performed in Jesus' name. Jesus, gently redirects them to find their joy in eternal things, namely that they will be saved to eternal connection with God. Then, Jesus himself prays to the Father, expressing joy that people are responding to the proclamation of the kingdom. May we share in Jesus' joy at the spread of his gospel!
Do you find that Hell and the wrath of God are offensive to you or have those concepts ever been offensive to you? What do you do with those feelings? Two warnings are given concerning the topic of Hell in this passage. Forrest Brown peraches on our disposition in our questions for God in light of the reality of the coming judgement.
In this iconic passage, Jesus informs his followers that there is a massive harvest but only a few laborers. So he commands his hearers to pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out more laborers. Then Jesus immediately commissions 72 others to go and preach the kingdom. Do we pray earnestly for more laborers? Do we see ourselves on mission as well? If so, what kind of mission? Forrest Brown preaches on realigning our mission to the mission that Jesus gives here.
In one of the most challenging texts in all of Scripture, Jesus tells those that want to follow him what he is worth. That to follow Jesus means that he comes before our homes, possessions, career, dreams, even family. Jesus challenges them (and us) to do the internal work of evaluating our values and seeing whether Jesus is the top of that list. Because that is the only place that is fit for him.
Tim Carpenter preaches on the disunity of the disciples in the midst of Jesus predicting his own death. Their self-centeredness left them headed in different directions. Tim challenges us to be unified as believers across political and denominational boundaries to be unified together in prayer.
Forrest Brown and Tyler Shirley share who Exit is, where the church is going this year and how they sense the Lord leading them to place extra emphasis on prayer. Jake T., an international worker, also provides insight into how the Lord has grown him in prayer.
Forrest Browns preaches on Jesus' authority over demons and the value of prayer in the life of a believer. Additionally, the centrality of the cross is central to this passage as Jesus again predicts his death.
A central theme of Luke comes to a head in this passage, one that has come up throughout the book--the question of "Who is Jesus?" On the face of it, it sound straight forward and simple. But as Jesus performed miracles, rumors of his identity swirled. Jesus then presses his closest followers with the question "But who do YOU say that I am?"
In this last section of Luke 8, Forrest Brown preaches on the third set of miracles (out of three) right in a row. In this text, we see Jesus' power to heal a woman that has an incurable bleeding disorder. We see that Jesus is not only able to do what the doctors could not do, but he also does it passively. And because Jesus took time to restore this woman back into the community, the delay means that Jairus' daughter dies from illness. So Jesus simply places her spirit back into her. Jesus is powerful to save and to heal!
Forrest Brown preaches on the second of a trilogy of miracles of Jesus in Luke 8. This one involves casting out demons from a man living in tombs. This brings up not only the question of how demons/angels work but also what kind of power Jesus had to perform such a massive miracle.
Jesus calms the wind and the waves - The incredible power of Jesus has been displayed throughout Luke with Jesus healing the sick, restoring the paralyzed, raising the dead, forgiving sins, and now power over nature itself. The deity of Jesus is on display, and it caused the disciples to fear and worship Jesus. Yet, often today in the West, we have very little regard for fear at all. We often treat it as the enemy of the Christian. What role should fear play in our walk with the Lord today?
Forrest Brown preaches on the types of soil that characterize dispositions of the human heart. Which type of soil are you? How does that play out in real life?
We took a brief pause in the book of Luke to hear testimonies of a few different people in the Exit family. Listen in as Mooch, Austin and Drew share their stories of God moving in their lives and brining them to salvation.
Have you ever wanted to increase your love for the Lord, but have felt unable to do so? Listen as Forrest Brown preaches on the story of Jesus at the house of Simon the Pharisee. When a "woman of the city" (likely a prostitute) came into the house and fell at Jesus' feet, we see the contrast between the heart of Simon and the heart of the prostitute. This contrast gives us a clue as to how to best connect with the Lord.
Peter calls us foreigners and aliens in this world. As we look at the secular culture around us, we observe that it is a people that are consumed with sex and sexuality. We therefore make it our aim to ask what God's word has to say about sex and sexuality, so that we are equipped to be salt and light in this world. Additionally, with the growing focus on the transgender movement, we put special focus on this part of the discussion. Listen as we search God's word for His design and desire surrounding sex and sexuality.
Forrest Brown compares the doubting of John the Baptist with the doubting of the religious leaders of his day. What does it look like to doubt well? How can we glorify God in our doubt?

Jesus quoted Isaiah 61 and claimed to be the promised messiah that would fulfill this Old Testament prophecy. This is no doubt a scandolous claim in an of itself--that a physical person would claim to be God incarnate. But beyond that, what does this prophecy actually mean on the ground? How did Jesus fulfill this prophecy? And what does it mean for us today?
After his temptations in the wildernes, Jesus returns to his hometown in the power of the Holy Spirit, reveals in the synogogue that he is the messiah, and confronts his hearers with their sin. Engaging in spiritual matters with those that we're closest with--family and friends--is one of the most challenging tasks for a believer. Even Jesus' hometown sought to throw him off a cliff after hearing his words. Forrest Brown preaches on how this lands for us today.
In this passage, we see that immediately after Jesus' baptism and public affirmation from the Father, the Holy Spirit leads Jesus into the desert to be tempted. Yet unlike Adam in the garden, Jesus overcame the temptations of the devil. How do we deal with temptation in our lives? How do we overcome temptations as Jesus did?
How do we know that Jesus is trustworthy? Few take issue with him being a respectable teacher and perhaps even a miracle-worker. But can we trust him to forgive our sin and set us right with God? We see in today's passage that Jesus' identity as the Son of God uniquely qualifies him to be the Messiah, and by his forgiveness, the Father affirms that he is pleased with us.
We are often sold ideas of what the ideal life looks like--it can involve a certain kind of house or car, career or spouse or some kind of fantastic accomplishments. Yet, at the end of our lives, the only things that will matter are the things we do to bring glory to Jesus. He commanded us to "go and make disciples of all nations." What does that look like? Listen in as we invite several people in our midst to share how they are living their lives on mission for King Jesus.
There are two questions that are often paired and, for many of us, are at the heart of our most difficult moments of doubt. "Did God really say?" & "Is God good?" They are tremendously important questions to answer. Join us as we seek to answer these questions.
John the Baptist's role was to prepare the way for the coming Messiah. He baptized others, pointed out their sinful behaviors and called them to lives of humble obedience. How did this point the way to Jesus? And what can we glean from John about how we should live?
When was the last time that you struggled in your relationship with your parents or your children? In today's passage, Mary and Joseph lose Jesus--the Savior of the world, God incarnate--on the way back from a trip to Jerusalem. We see that at the age of 12 Jesus already knew his identity as God's son, and he models for us how to submit to our own parents while also being faithful to the Lord.

In our culture, we highly celebrate those that move from a low class in society to a high class. And yet, when we look at the birth story in Luke chapter 2, we see a massive army of angels singing and celebrating a perfect God who--although he was at the top of the universe--set aside his rights and became a vulnerable human baby born in a dirty feeding trough--one of the lowest stations in life. And Scripture tells us that this is ultimately the most glorious thing, worthy of all praise.
What does suffering produce in you? Where do you go when life's circumstances (and perhaps even God himself) press on you? In this passage Forrest Brown highlights how Zechariah's suffering/punishment led him to glorify God, even going as far as delighting in God himself more than God answering Zechariah's prayers. In our own suffering, can we let it produce in us this kind of focus/desire for the Lord?
Forrest Brown preaches on Mary's visit to Elizabeth and how the Spirit moves in both of them, as well as through John the Baptist, still in Mary's womb. From this passage, we also get The Magnificat, Mary's song in response to God's goodness. As with Mary, God often calls us to step out in faith, even when we don't have the full picture and we don't know how the end will turn out. We may even face significant backlash. Yet, Mary and Elizabeth show us how to faithfully respond to God's promptings.
