One of the scariest scenes unfolded this past Monday night for the world to see. There was great excitement for this game, as two of the best teams in the NFL were competing head-to-head with playoff implications. A packed stadium and a buzz that only great teams can generate. Shortly after the game had started the unthinkable occurred…
24-year-old Damar Hamlin was injured on the field. Just a routine tackle. A play that you’ve seen numerous times in a game and one that you would never think twice about. As Hamlin stood up, he soon then collapsed back down and lay motionless on the field. Doctors rushed by his side, administered CPR, and 20 minutes later he was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
Dr. Grant Garcia wanted to share some information about what happened and explain what Commotio Cordis is: a trauma to your chest, a type of injury that is usually associated with Baseball, Lacrosse, Hockey, and combat sports. Dr. Garcia wants to let coaches and families know how to be prepared and recognize the difference between a common injury and a life-threatening one.

Happy New Year!!!
As we get excited about all the possibilities and new shows for 2023, we look back at some of our favorite topics and conversations of 2022.
In 2022, we talked about several hot topics including the future of cartilage, meniscus, and ACL surgeries. We discussed internal bracing, fantastic tech wearables, and what it takes to make it to the next level. We thought a fun show looking back at some of our top segments would allow our listeners to hear some of the highlights they may have missed or some they may want to hear again.
In response to some of these segments, we have had a few updates including the introduction of one of the first cartilage stimulation products with Cartiheal Agili-C Implant (tag) which may be the future of cartilage transplants. Also, ACL repair (tag) has taken off including the tightrope and internal brace combination that has been impressing Dr. Garcia and his patients on their speedy recovery as we enter 2023. Finally, wearable technology was taken one step further at the World Cup in which high-tech soccer balls and player tracking apps were used to provide the best experience yet and allowed a fairer and safer tournament. (Read: https://www.jumpstartmag.com/4-cutting-edge-technologies-used-in-fifa-world-cup-qatar-22/)
Thank you to all our listeners. We hope you enjoy this 2022 recap podcast, and we look forward to bringing you new and exciting shows in 2023.

As the World Cup takes the planet by storm, we look at some common soccer injuries and discuss them along with our semifinal and final predictions sure to go wrong. Dr. Grant Garcia discusses serious to nagging injuries such as ACL, quad, hamstring, tears, strains, and others. When do doctors use PRP, shockwave, and other treatments for these injuries and how do these treatments work best for patients? We discuss.
The World Cup excitement begins as there are only 4 teams left. Can Croatia and Morocco win their first World Cup? Lionel Messi will be looking to win his first title and Argentina’s third overall. Not to be outdone the defending champions France will look to win back-to-back titles. If France can win, it will be the first time a nation has won in consecutive tournaments since Brazil did it in 1958 and 1962. Each team has suffered injuries. The type of injuries that Dr. Garcia discusses in this show.
Enjoy the games. Enjoy the show. Be on the lookout for our end-of-year best of 2022 show. Thanks for listening.

Robotics, cameras, and rehab. A perfect combination.
Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses a new technology that will revolutionize how patients can rehab and how surgeons can teach. We start out discussing the Avail system. A camera system that utilizes technology, networking, and software to combine the perfect partnership. This Avail system will allow doctors to learn and teach in a way they haven't done before.
One technology that has the industry buzzing is coming from the company Hrobotics. They have come out with an FDA-registered robotic, physical therapy device for both the upper and lower extremities called Rebless. Rebles allows for passive, active, active-assisted, and resisted training and range of motion measurement, so therapy can be customized based on each patient’s condition and progress. To simplify, as a patient you can take this machine home, and your doctor can program, monitor, and adjust your rehab in real-time. This device can do much more and Dr. Garcia explains all of it. Take a listen, get informed, and enjoy.

Like any other night for football fans, Thursday Night Football is a time to sit back, root for your teams, and enjoy the game. A fast-moving, action-packed, adrenaline-filled sport that is fascinating to watch. We watch the game in awe, we connect, and it reminds us of our communities and love of the sport at every stage of our childhood. We know with this violent game comes injuries, we expect them, we hope not to see them, but they are inevitable. Blown ACLs, shoulders, ankles, and sometimes frightening compound fractures. These injuries are obvious and then there are those that are by far the scariest of injuries...Head injuries. Concussions. The dirty little word that football leagues don't want us to talk about. An injury that for years the NFL had lied about. The repercussions of this type of injury, until Dr. Bennet Omalu exposed the NFL and the catastrophic results of these injuries. We know the risk, the players know the risk and so does the NFL.
In this show, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses the injury that quarterback Tua Tangoviola suffered, and the concerns with concussions. Especially, Second Impact Syndrome. He discusses Fencing, Gross Motor Instability, and the doctors' responsibilities to his patient. What can or should be done moving forward to fix these protocols that seem to have loopholes in them? How does the responsibility of a doctor to his patient affect the decision-making when it comes to million-dollar athletes and their billion-dollar owners?
If anything, we hope that this show reminds parents and coaches of the big picture especially when it comes to the health of your kids, and players.

When technology and creativity intertwine great discoveries are explored. This is what is occurring in the orthopedic field. The discussion of restoration versus reconstruction of a torn ACL at times has been debated, but now more than ever restoration has given patients a great option. Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses the BEAR Implant. The Bridge Enhanced ACL Restoration (BEAR) technique is a procedure used to treat ruptured or torn ACLs. This new, FDA-approved procedure serves as a much better alternative than traditional ACL reconstruction. It's less invasive and less complex in nature.
Dr. Garcia talks about how the BEAR Implant enables your body to heal its own torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The implant is different because it works with your own blood to heal the torn ends of your ACL back together. We discuss who is a prime candidate, and how soon after your injury should you have this procedure done, pros and cons of restoration versus reconstruction, affordability and getting insurance to approve this procedure. Dr. Garcia covers all patients' questions. Real topics, realistic questions, and answers. Dr. Garcia is always at the forefront of technology and the BEAR implant has him excited for his patients as they recover and get back to normality faster than ever. Why might the BEAR implant be good for you? There’s a lot more that we discuss, but I guess you need to listen and enjoy.
Patients can now achieve complete functional restoration without the consequences of traditional ACL surgery. A few fun facts. the BEAR implant is FDA-approved. A tiny incision can place the implant as it will be situated in the space between the two ACL ends. Also, the patient's blood will be added to the BEAR implant to activate clot formation (Dr. Garcia explains all of this).

The scene is set as the NBA and the NHL are ready to conclude their season and crown a champion. All season teams have one common goal in mind, a reward that every athlete dreams of and it fuels their desire to get to the biggest stage to make their dreams come true. The road is filled with daily competition, athletic endurance, pain threshold, mental fortitude, and luck. Not everyone is fortunate to get to that stage let alone make it to that level of competition. Not everyone has what it takes.
In this show, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses his experiences working with the top athletes in sports and their unwavering drive when it comes to being the best. We discuss these successes on the field and off it as well. Rainier Beach high school football coach Corey Sampson joins us to share his thoughts on the various ways to recognize success, especially when it comes to his players. It can be graduating, giving back to your community, becoming a professional in your field of interest, etc. This show is inspired by the movie “American Underdog” and it opened up the discussion of “what it takes.” to achieve success and how that looks different for so many of us.

One of the most exciting conferences an Orthopaedic surgeon can attend is the annual AAOS conference. A conference that has more than 30,000 attendees includes Academy Fellows, AAOS members, international guests as well as allied medical professionals and exhibitors. This conference has representatives from 155 countries. These professionals discuss procedures, old and new. They learn about future technology and its usage, but overall, this is a place where great minds come to share and learn.
In this episode, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses a few things that caught his attention. The future of using virtual reality. Also, the expansion of using 3D printing and how it allows the surgeon to prepare for his patient’s procedures before he does the procedure. There are new advancements and data surrounding ACL procedures such as the Bear Implant and the benefits of preservation versus reconstruction. Who are the best candidates for these procedures? What does the data say about the pros and cons of certain procedures? We discuss topics like this and more. Last, but not least, I attempt to Stump the Doc. As usual, we try to give you the information you the patient is interested in hearing while we try to have a little fun.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in America. It is also the oldest team sport in North America. In fact, one of the earliest accounts of lacrosse comes from a document that was written in the early 17th-century, but the sport was clearly around before that time. We also know that the document recognizes the First Nations people first played it across Canada over 500 years ago. Each nation had its own version of “Stickball”, later changed to Lacrosse. “La Crosse” (The Stick), but they all played it to thank the Great Spirit — called Gichi-manidoo in Anishinaabe.
Dr. Grant Garcia discusses injuries that apply to lacrosse, and some of the signs to look for when they’re not so obvious. As he says…” he rather be safe than sorry.” Especially when it pertains to neck injuries. It’s a show that is beneficial to coaches, parents, and fellow teammates. It’s not just about the injuries, but the love of the sport. These shows are not to discourage playing sports, in fact, there are countless benefits to playing team sports, but we should be aware of some of the injuries and be prepared for them as they occur. Now get out there and play.

Consumer wearables such as Apple, Whoop, Polar, Garmin and so many others are revolutionizing how we monitor our health. It’s a Multi-billion-dollar market that has expanded way beyond just counting our steps. On this show Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses the many uses and how its technology will revolutionize health care.
Athletes are a big part of the conversation because as Dr. Garcia said, consumer wearables are the “Holy grail of athletics” in how this tech will help athletes, trainers, doctors, and the overall organization when it comes down to the players and how they are monitored. Athletes are competing longer, are aware of their sleep patterns, mental and physical stresses, and more. Teams also monitor hundreds of thousands of algorithms to make decisions that they determine is best for an overall winning outcome. There is an abundance of tech such as pitchers’ sleeves, helmet monitors, heads-up displays goggles for swimmers, and much more.
This tech doesn’t just benefit athletes, but patients like you and me. As Dr. Garcia said, they can use this technology to “treat patients with a holistic approach.” We cover a lot in this show…Concerns over HIPPA compliance, telemedicine, also, how surgeons themselves are monitored, and how certain places are making sure they are up to an optimum standard before they go into surgery. Places like the Cleveland Clinic have already begun this process. An informative show that we hope like always you enjoy and find informative.

The dreaded three letters that an athlete or a person, in general, doesn’t want to hear from their doctor is ACL. Better yet, torn ACL. It’s an injury that is all too common especially with athletes. An injury that can usually take anywhere from 8 months to a year to recover from. However, Dr. Chad Lavender of Marshall Orthopaedics has developed a new approach, a new technique to ACL surgery that has the orthopedic community buzzing with excitement.
It is known as the “Lavender Fertilized ACL.” this technique uses a mixture of bone marrow concentrate, autograft bone, and DBM (demineralized bone matrix) to fill the tunnels within the knee joint during traditional ACL reconstruction. This technique along with utilizing an internal brace reinforcement to improve the stability of the healing ACL patients have reported the same results as the standard ACL reconstruction with shorter recovery times, significantly less pain, and no known additional risks.
“My hypothesis was if we improved the biologics and healing process into the tunnel, where we put the ACL, patients would have a better long-term outcome. If we also improve the stability of the ACL with an internal brace, patients will have a better short-term outcome and be able to enhance their rehabilitation – which is exactly what we’ve seen.” Chad Lavender, MD
I had a great time talking with Dr. Lavender as we discussed at length the “Lavender Fertilized ACL.” Technique, but also his love of West Virginia and the University. Dr. Lavender knows first-hand how injuries can really affect athletes and why it’s so important for him to help people get back to normality as soon as possible. It’s not just helping them to get back faster physically, but what it means to get back mentally. He credits his peers and everyone at Marshall Health for their continuous support, and we also discuss a little college football and Mountaineer rivalries.

Topics: College football national championship, challenges of roster
The 2021 college football season has ended and as we recognize Alabama and Georgia as the premier programs in the sport, we also recognize the situation that is happening with the conference committees. Scott and I discuss the championship game between Georgia and Alabama, but also dive into other aspects of college football. We discuss the transfer portal and its trickle-down effect and how it’s affecting recruiting at the high school level. The concerns of recruiting with college programs having to get cut down their roster size after having a 1-year waiver. Meaning there will be student-athletes that may not have many options in the future. Scott Laigo breaks it all down.
Scott Laigo and Student-Athlete Advocates help high school student-athletes and their parents with a clear, honest approach to the eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid process, through their athletic abilities to help subsidize their college education. Topic: Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses the college football national championship game with Georgia taking on Alabama. Dr. Garcia discusses his fandom, a little trivia, injuries to key players and the effects injuries play on the NFL draft.
For 152 years college football has been played. Now the first 7 years of the sport didn’t resemble anything that we see in today’s game, but with the help of a few Ivy League schools and a man called Walter Camp the game as we know it today began to take shape.
Dr. Grant Garcia discusses injuries sustained to offensive linemen Emil Ekiyor Jr., tight end Brock Bowers and others. We discuss what NFL physicians look for when assessing players that teams may potentially draft. I also challenge Dr. Garcia with some trivia, and we discuss why Brown football is better than Michigan. Just kidding. That’s a not-so-subtle shot at his buddies. It’s a fun and informative show to kick off the new year. We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year.
Recognized again as one of Seattle’s Top Doctors in 2021. Dr. Garcia also was an assistant team physician for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox. Have you ever had a Tom & Jerry drink? Say what? We discuss holiday traditions and family as we close out 2021. Want to take a mayo bath? We think about some of these bowl game names, and their new traditions and some of us are not fans.
The more important and lengthy discussion we have is the future of NIL. As the flood gates flow through with endless possibilities, we discuss our concerns with the future and how the NIL could benefit not just student-athletes, but institutions and their entire programs.
The transfer portal is bursting at the seams. It’s a numbers game as thousands of student-athletes make moves with only limited space at schools. Not only does this affect college students, but what are the ramifications trickling down to how high school athletes are being recruited.

Guests: Rainier Beach HS football coach Corey Sampson, and Scott Laigo.
Topics: 2021 recruiting and the year that was for Rainier Beach HS football.
Rainier Beach high school football coach Corey Sampson joins us this week after a tremendously long year. A year that saw his football program play in the spring, followed by summer practices, and then another football season this past fall. It was an extremely successful season for his Beach Boys, that now encompasses his seniors going off to the next level. Coach Sampson has had a multitude of coaches come to talk to him about his players. We discuss that process and what it means to him. We also discuss one of his highly recruited players in the country, offensive lineman Josh Conerly Jr., his leadership on and off the field, and what he has meant to the locker room for the Rainier Beach football team.
Corey’s community work and fundraising are recognized, and he constantly demonstrates how important it is to give. This holiday season he hopes people will join him in giving back to the community. He discusses his Go Fund Me page: Coaches, Cops & Coffee. This page raises money and gives back to those who need it the most in their community. He has set the example not only to his players but his four kids who are in college. We discuss the impact of the late Derek Sparks and what he had meant to him and others.
After saying bye to Coach Sampson, former coach and president of Student-Athletes Advocates Scott Laigo discusses this past recruiting period. The effects of the transfer portal, how the coaching carousel played a part in some of the decisions by major recruits, and what to look out for if you’re a student-athlete trying to make commitment decisions.
I can’t thank the coaches enough for their time. Happy Holidays.

Topic: Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses future training for orthopedic surgeons, advancement in robotics, sensors, and 3D printing. The role of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality and how costs and choosing a medical provider play a role.
The definition of virtual reality (VR) is… the use of computer modeling and simulation that enables a person to interact with an artificial three-dimensional (3-D) visual or other sensory environments. Dr. Grant Garcia explains how virtual, augmented, and mixed reality is the future and present of orthopedics, from a teaching perspective to a technological one. For example, imagine the world’s greatest doctors operating on a patient from thousands of miles away or a student learning to operate under any scenario before even interacting with their first patient.
From robotics, sensors, costs, accessibility, and even the importance of choosing a medical provider, Dr. Garcia discusses it all. A fun futuristic show that even Stanley Kubrick would love.

Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Grant Garcia discusses new tech., hopeful breakthroughs, and exciting possibilities.
Topics: Telehealth surge, Cartilage restoration, Biologics, and Fertilized ACL
When it comes to our health, we always want the best treatment. Just like we are looking for the best medicine, the best hospitals, the best care, and the best doctors, doctors are on the lookout for new technology, new methods, new equipment that will essentially benefit us… the patient.
We discuss things that came faster than expected out of necessity and new technology that is ahead of its time: Telehealth which has increased over 50% in 2020, bringing convenience to so many.
Cartilage restoration: Scaffolds to grow cartilage, Arthritis prevention. How do you restore lost cartilage?
Biologics: Can the future be as simple as an injection? A procedure that will eliminate the need for surgery.
Fertilized ACL: This new procedure was one of the most exciting Dr. Garcia discussed. A technique using a mixture that will fill the tunnels within the knee joint during a traditional ACL reconstruction. This technique also utilizes an innovative concept of internal brace reinforcement to improve the stability of the healing ACL and it will allow the patient to recover in a much quicker time frame.

We had to do a mid-week show because of the Topsy-Turvey week that we have already had in college football. The coaching carousel continues as Brian Kelly in a surprising move leaves Notre Dame for LSU. We discuss the departure, the playoffs, and the etiquette of this move. Also as Washington Huskies fans, we had to get into the hire of DeBoer from Fresno State and the expectations along with disappointments.
College football playoff selection committee chair Gary Barta said. "Once the championship games wrap up … the protocol does include the ability for the committee to consider a player or a coach not being available. Should that have an effect on the outcome of a game, that can be considered. At this point, we’ll have to wait and see how that factors in.”
It sounds like even if everything breaks right for Notre Dame, they will be left out of the playoffs looking in. It’s amazing how the playoff committee controls the narrative. Lots to discuss have a listen and enjoy.

USC and Lincoln Riley snuck out the back door together when no one was looking. As the media and fans, we’re distracted with Riley possibly going to other teams such as Florida, LSU, or staying put at Oklahoma. The Trojans wrap up their big fish in Lincoln Riley. A hire that will not only help USC but bring relevance to the Pac-12. A relevance that only Oregon could provide.
Michigan finally gets their win over the Buckeyes. I don’t know what was more impressive…The way they played or the way they partied. A game they will remember in Ann Arbor for all the right reasons.
Imagine being a college football fan and not seeing Ohio State, a rising Utah, and perhaps even an Alabama not being in the playoffs? There are fans that would love it, but I’m not sure if the NCAA does. We all know they love their big names that bring in big money, but maybe this is exactly what football needs in order to finally make changes. They have until Dec. 12th to decide on expansion for next season. We’ll see what happens. We also discuss if this season is a trend or if this can be the norm.
Dori is passionate while discussing her Huskies and the loss they sustained at the hands of the cougars. It’s a great back and forth. Shout out to our buddy Derek Sparks who has continued his journey where we will all eventually end up one day. I know the former Apple Cup MVP for Washington State loved the game. RIP Derek Sparks.

Utah dismantled Oregon with a dominating performance this past weekend, and once again for the fifth consecutive season, the Pac-12 will not be a representative in the college football playoffs. A concern for college football as even Greg Sankey the SEC commissioner has been on record that their absence has not been good for the sport. Kudos to Kyle Whittingham and his Utes, as they show us once again that they are the class of the Pac-12. In his 18th season, coach Whittingham has led his team to the Pac-12 title game for the 3rdtime out of the last 4 seasons.
Former football coach Scott Laigo travels to Happy Valley and shares his experiences being there. One of the great stories he shares is Penn State coach James Franklin speaking to his team about the Zac Stacey incident and his message to his players.
In this week’s Student-Athletes Advocates tidbits, Scott gives advice to the 2023 class and what student-athletes need to be prepared for. A must listen.
As we wind down the regular season for college football, we look at one of the great rivalry weeks in sports. A game that began in 1900 and ended in a 5-5 tie. The Apple Cup is back. After not playing last year for the first time since 1944, Washington and Washington State renew their rivalry. A game that means everything for these two universities and their fan bases. This season a win for Washington State could lead to a Pac-12 title game. We share great stories and thoughts, from Drew Bledsoe, snowball fights, stuck cars in the snow, and frozen butt cheeks. What?! We also mentioned former 1994 Apple Cup MVP Derek Sparks and how we are thinking of our friend.

On November 14th, Jennifer Cohen, Athletic Director at the University of Washington fired football head coach Jimmy Lake after 13 games. The last time a coach at Washington had a shorter tenure was in 1956. Jimmy Lake, the successor to Chris Peterson, was supposed to pave the way for future Huskie’s glory. A reputation as being one of the top defensive coaches in college football was a young up-and-coming coach that should have cemented himself in Husky lore for years to come. That expectation came to a stunning halt after 13 games.
There is much to unpack with this bold decision. Was Coach Lake over his head or was this decision made way too hastily? Did Coach Lake ever have a chance to succeed here in the Pacific Northwest, or were there certain individuals waiting for the first signs of failure to give them the excuse to be rid of Jimmy Lake?
A great discussion covering many avenues, thoughts, and frustrations.

Guests: Coaches Blaine “Shorty” Bennett, Dori Bennett and Scott Laigo
Legendary Coach Blaine “Shorty” Bennett talks football with us as we cover a variety of topics with the 3-time state champion and coach of the year. Shorty has written multiple articles on the fundamentals of throwing the football, training the quarterback, and passing schemes. In addition, he has developed training videos on pass catching and proper route running techniques for receivers. The All-Northwest Football Camps have received national recognition from ESPN, the New England Sports Network, and the NFL Game Day programs.
In 1972, Shorty and Mac Bledsoe (Drew Bledsoe’s father) started the All-Northwest Football Camp, which specialized in the training of quarterbacks and receivers. Throughout the camp’s 34 years, scores of quarterbacks and receivers went on to play at the collegiate level and several others were drafted and played in the NFL. A few from the state of Washington include Clint Didier - Washington Redskins, Steve Pelluer - Dallas Cowboys, Lake Dawson – Kansas City Chiefs, and Drew Bledsoe -New England Patriots. Drew was the #1 pick in the 1993 NFL draft.
We travel down memory lane, share laughs, and ask questions that we think are pertinent to today’s topics regarding football and more. Also, Scott Laigo, president of Student-Athletes Advocates discusses what student-athletes are doing to get noticed by coaches and what are some of those tools.
It's a pleasure to have an opportunity to catch up with coach Shorty. We enjoyed doing the show we hope you enjoy viewing it. A reminder we have our NYSEA Radio YouTube page, and you can listen to us at Spotify, Audacy, Apple, iheart, and many other podcast platforms.

Discussions:
106-0 is the final. 13 passing touchdowns and a 2-point conversion up by 104 points. Some will say…if you don’t like it stop it. Others will say a coach is a teacher and their responsibility is to have their athletes learn bigger lessons than the final score. It’s a hot topic after head coach Mil’Von James from Inglewood High School ran up the score and refused to have a running clock after being up 59-0. We discuss coaches’ roles and sportsmanship.
The battle of Michigan versus Michigan State lived up to the hype. The Heisman hype… as Kenneth Walker III showcased himself on the biggest stage so far this season with a five-touchdown performance. As the Spartans rise up the charts, or should I say... poll. Harbaugh and his Wolverines once again are being asked can Jim get it done. Is he the right man for the job? As we’ve seen this season already, coaches don’t last. Coaches such as Clay Helton, Nick Rolovich, and recently Gary Patterson have all lost their jobs for a litany of reasons. We asked the question and discussed what happens to programs, student-athletes, and coaches’ families when fired during a season?
Speaking of possibly losing a job. Jimmy Lake and the Washington Huskies have struggled. Not only with their performance on the field, but also coaches comments off of it. As if the Pac-12 conference didn’t have enough problems, attendance is down and so is viewership. Why is that and what can be done?
Scott Laigo, president of Student-Athletes Advocates discusses what student-athletes are doing to get noticed by coaches and what are some of those tools.
At times, we crack jokes, get off-topic, and try to figure out how much candy I can possibly eat before I look like a 15-year-old teenager.

Pitt quarterback, Kenny Pickett is rising up the Heisman Charts. The 4-year starter defeated Clemson this past weekend while breaking Alex Van Pelts completion record, and now has eyes set on Dan Marino’s career touchdown record. As Pittsburgh climbs up the AP Poll rankings, Clemson continues their surprising slide. A year that has seen Heisman hopefuls such as DJ Uiagalelei and Spencer Rattler struggle, Coaches Dori Bennett, Scott Laigo and I discuss if we can remember a year where players that have had so much hype, and yet had struggled so mightily.
Teams such as Washington have struggled offensively. They barely defeated Arizona and seem to be struggling in their Pro-Style offense. Do players prefer tempo, RPO’s, spread, over Pro-Style? Will a team's offensive philosophy impact a student-athlete decision to pick one school over the other?
This week’s Student-Athletes Advocate Tidbits: Scott discusses the NCAA clearinghouse process. Free versus charged account. Important information that can save you some money.
Nick Rolovich and four of his coaches are out. Now Washington State is left to fill 5 coaching positions and still find a way to compete. It’s an extremely difficult situation for all involved. Especially, the players left behind to pick up the pieces.
Lots of discussions and opinions. As we look back at the week that was in College Football.

Great having coaches Dori Bennett and Scott Laigo on the show…
Another college football week is in the books, and we start with the Washington Huskies. As they continue to disappoint. Once again there was a failure at the coaching and quarterback position. At this point, Dylan Morris is not capable of leading his team to a win as he continues to turn the ball over. The bread and butter of this team year after year has been their defense. A defense that is unrecognizable at this juncture of the season. As UCLA steamrolled them to a tune of 237 rushing yards. Is time running out for this staff on Montlake?
Speaking of time running out. It seems the clock has struck midnight on Nick Rolovich and his unvaccinated coaches. The Cougars coach may have won against the Cardinals this weekend, but his desire to remain unvaccinated has been a divisive topic for all Cougar fans at Pullman, WA.
The number two team in the country suffered a loss and the new AP Top 25 poll is out. Also, this week in our SAA Tidbits segment, Scott and Dori discuss the NCAA’s announcement to remove the minimum standardized test scores and what are those implications. Important information for our student-athletes and their parents.

What do we do? We talk sports. It's as simple as that.
What a weekend for college football. The "whiteout" game lived up to the hype with over a hundred thousand fans in attendance. Penn State and their beleaguered quarterback put on a great performance as Sean Clifford hand his best night as a Nittany lion as they go on to defeat the Auburn Tigers. The party might have gone on long into the night but concerned fans might have to worry about their coach James Franklin being looked at by other teams. A rough day/night for the SEC officials. Do we ignore it? Of course not. We have plenty to say.
The Big Ten has 6 teams that are undefeated. The conference as played great and look no further than Mel Tucker’s Spartans. It’s been an incredible turnaround. We discuss the coach, players, and the impact that the transfer portal has had not only one the Spartans, but inevitably the entire sport of college football. What’s better than jello shots? Coach Dori having jello shots. As her Huskies finally get their first win this season. Every week we have our Positive Player Spotlight and this week it’s the beautiful story of Anthony Washington and his commitment to his community and his need to become a special education teacher.
It's a fun show with our coaches and we really hope you enjoy it.

Expectations are plentiful from fan bases far and wide. Whether it’s 1920 and you rooted for the Decatur Staleys or Muncie Flyers, or now in 2021, it’s the New York Giants or the Seattle Seahawks. Football fans have eternal hope and optimism that their team can reach the ultimate pinnacle and bring a championship home to their fan base. For teams… having skilled players, competent coaches, and front offices with dash luck is usually a recipe for a possible successful season, but as we know injuries play a big part.
In this episode, Dr. Grant Garcia and I look back at some key injuries to big named players in 2020, and how they’ve bounced back or not and discuss the severity of their injuries sustained. From ACL injuries to Saquon Barkley and Nick Bosa to Ankle compound fractures and dislocation to Dak Prescott. Fast forward to 2021 and after 1 week the league has already lost players for the season. Raheem Mostert is hurt, and Jason Verrett is out again with his 2nd torn ACL.
Dr. Grant Garcia discusses his concern when players sustain multiple injuries and their future in the sport and the discussions that are had between the organization, team, and their doctors when it pertains to player injuries. We tease future episodes when discussing advancements in new technology.
As a fan of football, it’s a fun and knowledgeable conversation as it pertains to injuries and sports. We hope you enjoy it. Dr. Garcia was voted Seattle’s Top Doctor. He was an assistant team physician for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox. During residency, he also cared for players on the New York Giants, New York Mets, US Tennis Team, New York Rangers, New York Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets as well as many collegiate athletes. College football week 2 is in the books and it was an emotional one. Our coaches Dori Bennett, Scott Laigo, and I remember 9/11 and recognize the wonderful halftime performance by the Michigan Band as they paid tribute to the lives lost 20 years ago. The 2 biggest wins in the first two weeks of this College Football season have come from the Pac-12. As Oregon defeated #3 Oh io State in the best game of the weekend. The Ducks averaged 7.07 yards per rush as the Buckeyes give up over 200 rushing yards. The conference of champions is having a great start to their season so far. On the other end of the spectrum are the Huskies. As they have struggled mightily on offense. After scoring a touchdown on their opening drive in week one, they proceeded to not score on their next 19 drives. The loss to Michigan has put their coaching staff on the hot seat and for good reason. On a positive note, Dori's positive player spotlight focuses on Race Porter. The Washington punter has been raising mental health awareness. Discussing his struggles and his passion.
Former coach Scott Laigo, now president of Student-Athletes Advocate discusses the SAT/ACT dilemma and how it can affect you the student-athlete. For more information check out SAAdvocates.org. Last but not least we look back at St. Francis's remarkable win over De La Salle that ended a 316-0-2 win streak for the powerhouse program. Always fun and a different type of show. We hope you enjoy it.

As we creep back to normality and even though there are many challenges that lay ahead this college football season, the sport is back the way we know it, and so are we. Coaches Dori Bennett and Scott Laigo join me as we discuss some of the storylines that matter the most to us. This week we talk about our impressions from the first week. The atrocious play from the Washington Huskies and perhaps the future of the program. The joy of seeing McKenzie Milton play after his devastating injury was the biggest storyline this week. We discuss our surprises and disappointments.
Dori will highlight positive player/team/program spotlights each week, and this week she discusses the Black Student Athlete Alliance at the University of Washington and its importance to the student body. Scott Laigo, President of Student Athletes Advocates will focus on the process of eligibility, recruiting, financial aid, and more. This week he discusses his concerns over the size of these team's rosters, the transfer portal, and the future of recruiting especially at the expense of high school athletes. It's great to be back. The Doc is in! Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Grant Garcia…
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle.” – Pierre de Coubertin
The 2020 summer Olympics has had it all, and as we have watched with excitement, triumph, and heartache during these Olympics, we have also noticed that injuries play a big part in the outcome of these wonderful games. This week Dr. Grant Garcia looks at some of the key injuries that have occurred in these games, and how athlete’s physical and mental injuries had impacted their personal and team performances.
As the Olympics come to an end, we can watch in wonder how these remarkable athletes perform under the greatest duress and perform at the highest level for the world to see. We hope that everyone has enjoyed these games, and recognize their incredible feats no matter what the end results are. I remember the late great Jim Mckay used to say "Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport…the thrill of victory…and the agony of defeat…the human drama of athletic competition…”

The Doc is in! Podcast with Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Grant Garcia…
The Olympics have finally arrived! Starting July 23rdthrough August 8th the world’s greatest athletes will compete for the ultimate glory…to be recognized as the best at their sport and represent their country while doing so. This Olympics will introduce a few new sports to their games and one of these sports is Skateboarding. Once upon a time, this sport in the ’50s was referred to as “Asphalt Surfers” and then in 1978, Alan Gelfand invented a maneuver that gave skateboarding another revolutionary jump: the “Ollie”, which counts as the greatest trick ever invented and completely revolutionized skateboarding. That was the birth of street skateboarding. Ever since then the sport grew immensely. From Skate videos and magazines in the 80’s to the rise of Extreme Games (X games) in 1995 and in 1999 the Hawk soared through the air to land the first 900 as Tony Hawk became the face of Skateboarding.
Skateboarding is uber-popular today and as the popularity of this sport continues to rise, so do injuries. Dr. Garcia discusses some of these common injuries that skateboarders sustain. Preventative measures to reduce those risks and the importance of wearing the proper equipment to avoid/reduce such injuries. Faceplants, long bone fractures, attempting tricks above your skill level, ankle and foot injuries are just a few of the things that we discuss. It’s a gnarly show and we think every skateboard fan or parent that has a child working on achieving that perfect Landing Bolt will really enjoy it.
Info: Gear/Helmet certification: Skateboard helmets use the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission), and Snell safety standard certifications and are not required but are there to show evidence of the safety offered in a particular skateboard helmet.

The Roland-Garros (French Open) is one of the major Grand Slam titles that every tennis player covets. This year Novak Djokovic has added his 2nd French Open title, and 19th Grand Slam title overall, putting him one win away from tying Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. We felt that this was a perfect time to discuss common tennis injuries that players at all levels incur.
Tennis is a high-level sport that puts a tremendous demand on our bodies and sometimes that demand can have lasting effects. Playing tennis requires explosive bursts of energy, using different types of playing surfaces, and constant perpetual motion. Our bodies are affected from head to toe: shoulder, elbow, back, knee, ankle, foot, wrist. We discuss these injuries, what they feel like, and when we should go see someone. The differences from soreness and needing a day off, or whether it’s time to talk to someone before an injury can get worse.
We’ve seen the toll these injuries have had on our favorite players. We want to make sure that athletes at ALL levels are aware of these types of injuries, how to recognize them and when you should go see your doctor.

The Internal Brace has been a huge leap forward in treatment for the way patients recover from surgeries and how it allows them to get back to normal activities in a fraction of the time it used to take from conventional surgeries. This technology has been applied to some of the greatest athletes in the world, such as Drew Brees and others. A recent example is the dislocated kneecap that Brooks Koepka suffered right before the 2021 Masters tournament. The 4-time major champion and former #1 golfer in the world had put in place an Internal Brace, and a week later was hitting and walking on the golf course able to compete at the Masters just 3 weeks after surgery. This technology is not only available to the best athletes in the world, but it’s also available to you.
Dr. Garcia discusses at length what Internal Bracing is and how it is applied to injuries. We discuss how it works for acute and chronic ligament injuries, instabilities, benefits of using it when it comes to knee, shoulder, ankle, and thumb injuries. He shares what information and options you should be discussing with your doctor when it comes to this procedure, and the importance of having a doctor that knows how to apply an Internal Brace. Is Internal Bracing permanent? Is it safe for MRIs? Who’s more likely to get an Internal Brace? What are the cost differences if any? We get to these questions and much more.
It’s a great topic and a game changer to your recovery. Reach out to your doctor and others, to see if this procedure is something that can benefit you.

Franklin High School has a rich history in the emerald city of Seattle. Great alumni such as Dr. Bill Hutchinson, who founded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center named after his brother Fred, a former MLB player and coach. Grammy award-winning Jazz musician Kenny G. Sports icons such as MLB hall of farmer Ron Santo, Mario Bailey, Corey Dillon, Terry Metcalf, and so many others. There's a rich history of greatness at Franklin High School. The greatness that Athletic Director Scott Griggs is constantly reminded of as he walks the halls and sees the banners on the walls or the alumni bricks laying on the floors. He embraces this history as he helps lay down his own foundation for future generations.
Scott discusses his midwest upbringings and how they led him to Seattle, the diversity of his school as roughly 92% of his student enrollment are minorities, or as I like to say majorities, and the importance of open dialogue with students in today's climate. The foundation that is being laid now by his new football coach Terry Green and a promise of stability at that position that seems to have had a revolving door for the past decade. The importance of diversity and community is at the forefront of our discussion. A great example of that is his basketball coach and more importantly good friend Craig Jackson. Craig has been named Director of Diversity to WIBCA (Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association) a position that will give him a chance to help guide Washington state basketball programs to support student-athletes' constantly changing challenges.
Franklin High School, a school with a long storied history. For Scott, he's looking to write his own chapter in this illustrious story.

Ahead of their big weekend matchup against Tumwater H.S., Coach Davies takes some time to talk about the positives of having a football season and the importance of his seniors having another opportunity to play with their teammates.
The last time Steilacoom played Tumwater was in the Class 2A state championship game in which the sentinels lost 48-34. Even though there won’t be any High School football playoffs this season, this is the game that Steilacoom has circled on their schedule. For those seniors, this will be their last opportunity for these talented players to ground those Thunderbirds. One major piece missing will be wide receiver Emeka Egbuka. Emeka has enrolled early at Ohio State and the five-star recruit won’t be on the field to scare opposing players and coaches. In his place, Logan Brady, Tre Horner, and DJ Fryar will look to score early and often running a high-powered offense behind quarterback Chance McDonald. Chance was ranked #2 in passing yards, and touchdowns in the state of Washington in 2019, and has come in firing on all cylinders in this abbreviated spring football season.
A season that few expected to have, JV and freshman teams decimated by turnouts and pandemic ramifications, yet a team that Coach Davies is proud of. What’s a successful season? Any season that can be played.

Ryan Sherlock: Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Roosevelt H.S., Seattle, WA
(Coach Sherlock took some time for an interview before his game versus Lakeside H.S.)
What do you say to your coaches and student-athletes when you find out that there will be no school and no spring sports? How did it feel to know that your seniors would never play again for their teammates, coaches, and school? Not everyone goes to college to play sports so most of us High School sports bring the highest level that we achieve. It’s one of the few things that Coach Sherlock and I discuss in our interview. The uncertainty of a pandemic, the “here we go again” feeling of no fall sports, the euphoria of getting back on that field and playing a sport that so many love.
We discuss and tease him about how to manage all school sports in the spring. Also, how important it is for other Metro schools to have success and how they help elevate the league as a whole. He loves the Cleveland H.S. story and how they rebounded to have a successful season in 2019-20. He wants to see his former school Franklin be successful and get back to its glory days. We discuss “real” home field advantage, public versus non-public schools, and play a little game called “Go for it or Punt?”
I can’t thank Coach Sherlock enough for his time, and especially on game day. It’s a great interview with emotion, information, and hope.

Head Coach Zack Elvig from Ingraham H.S. joins me to discuss the excitement of spring football and much more. On June 30, 2020, Zack joined me for a great conversation (https://apple.co/30jV3aZ) to discuss the uncertainty of fall football, the effect, and conversations revolving around the BLM movement, diversity, and his commitment to Ingraham H.S. June seems like it was years ago.
Flash forward to March 5, 2021. Spring football is in the air and the Metro league is finally kicking off. Coach Elvig and I discuss the disappointment of fall football being canceled, how that circumstance was used as a positive, and how those positives will continue to be used going forward as well as his gratefulness toward his upperclassmen in how they have helped with incoming freshmen. We discuss the importance of excelling off the field, not just on it, and the people and the process that make that work.
Yes. football is back, but being back on the field with his coaches and student-athletes is really what matters the most to Coach Zachary Elvig.

This week Dr. Grant Garcia discusses…
We all know that Father Time is inevitable. As we get older, we slow down, we don’t recover as fast as we used to, and as athletes our performance takes a hit. Apparently, Tom Brady hasn’t gotten the memo. Dr. Grant Garcia discusses the ageless wonder, and his ability to continue to thrive and perform, as he gets older like very few athletes can. As amazing as it is that he continues to show excellence on the field, off the field he will get his repaired torn ACL from 2008 looked at this offseason what is considered “minor surgery or cleaned up.” As he gets ready for season number 22 next fall.
Speaking of ACL injuries…It’s been a winter wonderland here in the Pacific Northwest, and skiers are heading to the mountains so they can enjoy the #1 winter recreational sport in the world. Unfortunately, Dr. Garcia is seeing an uptick in injuries, especially ACL injuries. Dr. Garcia discusses a few things to help remind you what you need to do to get ready for the slopes, so you don’t end up in the ER feeling like a dope.

Part one: We discuss this past year, and how it has affected his family. We discuss the impact of the pandemic and how the protest for equality really hit home for himself and his family. The Covid vaccine is out, and David has some really great, and perhaps controversial thoughts on certain vaccines in particular. It's a great conversation that you really want to catch.
How do we segway from vaccines to Madden? I don't know. It just happens, and David is really excited when it comes to Esports and particularly Madden Football.

Derek Sparks has many titles. He is a coach, mentor, motivator, author, founder, former Washington State University running back, husband, and father. Derek currently is the running back coach at Pacific Lutheran University, and their season is about to start against the University of Puget Sound. It will be the first time they play in 448 days. It will mark the longest stretch of days for the Lutes without playing a football game since WWII.
Derek and I talk about many of the challenges of this past year: his love and appreciation of the game of football and how it has been put in perspective not only for him but also for so many others during the absence of the game that so many love. Getting ready for a college football season has been tough, but trying to get ready for a season as a high school coach seems impossible. We discuss cancer versus coaches, the pandemic, recruiting, and transfer portals. It’s a great show and it’s always a pleasure having Derek spend time talking with me.
The former Metro League high school coach of the year shares his thoughts on getting ready for a season, the obstacles and challenges that he and his staff would endure if he were still coaching high school football, and the leadership that the leagues need to show. The challenges of HS student-athletes getting noticed at the next level can be scary for so many; Derek shares his thoughts and advice with them. Sparks began his coaching career in the junior college ranks, serving as the running backs coach in 1997 at Compton College in southern California.
Sparks played at Washington State, helping the Cougars win the 1992 Copper Bowl and the 1994 Alamo Bowl. Sparks was the MVP of the 1994 Apple Cup and was a Doak Walker Award nominee in 1995. He continued his career with a free-agent contract with the 49ers in 1998. A motivational speaker, Sparks won the 49th Annual Coach-of-the-Year Award by the NFL National Football Foundation in 2014-2015. He is a best-selling author, writing Lessons of the Game in 2000, and is the founder of the House of Champions for Homeless High School Student-Athletes in 2014.

President of Student Athletes Advocate Scott Laigo is my guest this week. Scott helps student-athletes and their parents navigate through the recruiting and NCAA eligibility process. Saadvocates.org is a non-profit organization that will help you navigate the system, scholarships, grades, and more.
Scott and I discuss this past season in college football, and especially how the playoff system needs to be fixed and why. February 3rd is decision day for HS seniors, but the transfer portal is a new wrinkle that student-athletes and coaches now have to take into account. Transferring may sound like an opportunity, but be aware of the pitfalls that lay ahead. Larry Scott is out, but who’s in? We discuss why it’s imperative to get someone in as President sooner than later before certain opportunities are lost to other conferences. This spring the FCS will be playing, and local schools will be trying to complete a season. Can fall, winter, and spring sports all coexist? What health concerns may lie ahead, and whom does that burden fall on?
It’s a great show with the former football coach. If you’re listening to a podcast we do this show live on YouTube and if you watched the show on YouTube be sure to check out other episodes on Apple, Spotify, iheart, and other podcast platforms.

The NFL is in playoff mode and as we enjoy the sport that so many of us love, we are reminded about the dangers of head injuries as two of the biggest stars in the league suffer arguably the most difficult injuries to endure. This past weekend, former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson, and Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes sustained concussions that saw them exit their games. A concussion is an injury that sometimes is not so clear to see, and at other times it is very obvious. Dr. Grant Garcia discusses the various levels of concussion injuries that can be sustained, and how all levels of head trauma are significant.
Concussion injuries happen at the highest and lowest level of sport, not just football, and although significant advances are being made it can still sometimes be difficult to catch, especially to the untrained eye, or someone that didn’t see the injury occur. We discuss the “signs” to look for. The importance of a player or parent coming forward when a player is exhibiting such signs is paramount and they should never be ignored. Dr. Garcia discusses these signs, the steps or “concussion protocol” that should be followed when returning to sport, and the importance of teams using data forms such as SCAT (Sports Concussion Assessment Tool.) This tool represents a standardized method of evaluating injured athletes for concussion and can be used in athletes aged from 10 years and older.
Another informative show that we hope you will enjoy and share.

A new year is upon us, and for many of us, a new year symbolizes new resolutions. Dr. Grant Garcia, orthopedic surgeon, and sports medicine specialist discusses the “Average Joe” resolutions and how we should safely, and smartly prepare ourselves for a healthy and fit 2021. New workouts can sometimes lead to new injuries. What are some things to consider when we’re starting new routines? The importance of being mindful, listening to our bodies, and progressing at a pace that is beneficial for sustainability.
As we say adieu to the 2020 NFL regular season, half of the league’s offseason has officially begun. We discuss why this is the most difficult time for team doctors, and what their process and protocol are when handling players before they leave the team's facilities. Don’t worry sports fans; we also had to get Dr. Garcia’s Super Bowl picks, and it will surprise some football fans out there. Happy New Year!

The college football regular season is in the books, and most bowl games have been decided, but who plays and who should play is still being debated. This 2020 season has been like none other unless you want to head back to games being played in 1918 this year was unconventional, to say the least. Dori Bennett and Scott Laigo just like every week this season voice their opinions on topics that matter the most.
This week the topics that we discuss are… the final CFB rankings, and who’s in and who’s out. Dabo Swinney believes that the games matter and a season full of attrition should be a part of the requirements to be weighed when it comes to teams being placed in the final four, and that’s why he made his decision to rank Ohio State number 11 in the coaches poll.
The commissioner of the AAC, Mike Aresco thinks that Group 5 teams will never have a chance to play in the BCS final four. The Power 5 bias and greed will never succumb to a deserving Group 5 team and he says “Why bother?” Is it time for the Group 5 teams to leave the BCS or should the Power 5 make enough noise to expand the playoffs to include them? We have football teams opting out of bowl games, and bowl games being canceled. The Pac-12 is the laughing stock of College Football and other fun conversations this week on NYSEA.

We discuss the difficult decision of playing for your home state and moving on. The future concerns of scholarships along with players entering the transfer portal and the residual effect down the road.
Azuza Pacific, the last NCAA DII school has ended its football program. With the lack of funding and concerns for such programs, other schools potentially will have to make similar decisions. Coach Dori Bennett and former Husky coach Scott Laigo join me to talk some College Football from this past weekend.
Scott and SAA (SAADVOCATES.ORG) help parents, and student-athletes through the process of eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid. The Pac-12 championship is going to be played minus the Huskies of Washington. Covid has left them without enough eligible players to compete. We reflect upon Jimmy Lake's first season and what might be next. The transfer portal is getting worn out with record players looking to move on. We discuss some of the concerns that teams and players are going to have next season with record numbers of scholarships and how that will affect ALL programs, not just football. The shoe (not Florida & LSU) is dropping for coaches as Kevin Sumlin, Gus Malzahn, and others have been dismissed. We discuss these firings and also the fact that in a year with so many cutbacks programs can swallow millions of dollars by firing coaches. Art Briles may be back on the college scene and not everyone is happy. Lots of conversations that we hope you enjoy. Thanks for listening to NYSEA.

Biologic treatments. That's the discussion this week with Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Grant Garcia. We've heard of some of the top athletes in the world getting Platelet-rich plasma and Stem cell treatments for faster and more productive recovery when it comes to injuries and surgeries. These procedures are no longer being used just on these athletes, You and I can now get these treatments and that's exciting for many reasons.
Dr. Garcia discusses PRP & stem cell treatments and how they differentiate from one another. Picking one treatment over another comes down to many reasons and unfortunately costs play into that decision also.
I was surprised to learn that not every facility is the same, especially when it comes to using the proper equipment for getting your platelets ready. That alone can determine the success of using treatments such as PRP. We discuss these concerns and what to look for and ask when searching out proper treatment.
It's a very informative show recommended for everyone to learn more about biological treatments and the continuous push in medicine not only today but in the future. For more information check out grantgarciamd.com

Coaches Dori Bennett, and former Husky coach Scott Laigo join me to talk some College Football from this past weekend.
After an impressive comeback win versus Utah last week. Once again the Huskies we’re facing another 21-point deficit, but this time David Shaw and his displaced Stanford Cardinals held on for the win. We spend time discussing this game, and so far what we’ve seen this season from this Washington football team.
The best two games of the weekend came from the Sun Belt Conference.
The game that was deemed the “Mormons vs. Mullets”
As Coastal Carolina hands the BYU Cougars their first loss of the season in a highly entertaining game as Mateo Sudipo’s game-saving tackle at the 2-yard-line preserved the win for the Chanticleers.
In the other game, it was the Ragin’ Cajuns finally defeating their nemesis Appalachian State. Louisiana had lost the last two Sun Belt Championships to the Mountaineers, but the win now sets up a showdown on Dec. 19th for the Sun Belt title against Coastal. The Chanticleers are the only team to defeat the Cajuns this season in a 30-27 thriller.
Social media was taken by storm by the footage we saw last week when Edinburg H.S. senior Emmanuel Duron rushed the field and assaulted a referee. This situation allowed us to discuss the state of officiating, coaching, and penalties that were levied against the team.

A day like none other…Thanksgiving Day
It is quite a meaningful day especially for those who are lucky enough to be able to celebrate with their families and friends. This day usually symbolizes tradition. Perhaps it’s cooking the turkey or having your favorite fixings on the table. Maybe it’s sitting down and watching football or your favorite holiday movie. Maybe it’s planning the unthinkable in getting ready to get on line at your favorite store for Black Friday. No, that’s not it. Not if you’re a fan of High School football. Not if you’ve been involved in a steep tradition that dates back to 1943. On Thanksgiving morning nothing matters, except beating your rival. Except this year there is no game. There are no bragging rights. There are no crowds. A game that has become the unofficial alumni reunion year in and year out will have no winner…until next year.
Offensive Coordinator, Kyle Amann takes time to talk with me about not playing in the 78thannual Turkey Bowl this season. Although there wasn’t a fall season, Kyle is hopeful and excited to play football in the spring and what it means for his student-athletes. We discuss rivalries and the competitive nature of the Catholic High School Football League. I ask him about the evolution of offensive football, and how he sees a path for repeating as league champions. We sum it all up with Kyle’s favorite Thanksgiving dishes, and what he’s thankful for this holiday season.
No, we won’t have the annual Turkey Bowl this year, but Thanksgiving Day is still a day like none other.

The NBA draft is finally here, and who better to talk about these elite athletes than orthopedic surgeon Dr. Grant H. Garcia (grantgarciamd.com)
We discuss the concerns that an NBA team doctor can have when evaluating players. The size, strength, and freakish abilities of these high-level athletes are remarkable, but how do doctors use this information when evaluating a player’s health before being drafted to a franchise?
This year there was no player combine, and teams only had the opportunity to conduct in-person meetings with players from Oct.16 - Nov.16th. Also, teams were only allowed to bring in up to 10 prospects for these evaluations (workouts, medical, meetings.). What kind of effect does that have when team doctors have to evaluate more than the 10 players allowed?
What are some of the types of injuries that concern Dr. Garcia when it comes to basketball players? We discuss Michael Porter Jr. and Zion Williamson's past injuries and if there are concerns going forward. More importantly, we talk about must-haves on Dr. Garcia’s Thanksgiving dinner table.
Dr. Garcia was an assistant team physician for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox. During residency, he also cared for players on the New York Giants, New York Mets, US Tennis Team, New York Rangers, New York Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets as well as many collegiate athletes.

All I wanted to do is play baseball…
Luisa Gauci is one of the few female baseball players playing in college. Her love of the game is profound, and her commitment to elevating baseball for women is her goal. Luisa’s journey has taken her from Australia to America; She currently plays for West L.A.’s college baseball team, and she is constantly looking to get better at her craft. That search has landed Luisa as an instructor with Driveline baseball. Where she focuses on analytics and data to get better and also teach other girls to excel at the game of baseball.
Analytics and data have been readily available for men playing baseball, but not women. This lack of information has led Luisa to her creating the 20-80 scouting for women (https://bit.ly/36Ey2Cp)
A data-driven analysis of how women hit baseballs. At just 19 years old she has already spoken in front of all MLB teams about women playing baseball. Luisa has met with people such as new Miami Marlins General Manager Kim NG, MLB hitting instructors, and others. Her goal is to be a “skipper” one day in MLB, and perhaps owner in baseball.
Luisa Gauci has a remarkable story already, and there’s so much more to come. Take a listen, as Luisa Guida joins me on NYSEA.

Clemson vs Notre Dame was everything and more than a college football fan could want. The Irish outrushed the Tigers 217-48, Game was interrupted by the President-elect, took 2 OTs to determine the outcome and fans rush the field like it was 1993. Can't wait for Dec. 19th ACC Championship game.
Herm Edwards and his Sun Devils with an incredibly difficult loss vs USC, as the Pac-12 conference finally kick off their season.
How big was Indiana's win? It's only their 2nd win vs Michigan in 53 years. Tom Allen has his Hoosiers team as can't miss TV.

Weekend Warriors, that’s the term that we use for adults wanting to have some playtime.
Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Garcia discusses how to minimize injuries, so we can spend more time doing the things that we enjoy, and less time recovering from them.
What are some common injuries that he sees as an Orthopedic Surgeon and why? How should we prepare for activities? How should we listen to our bodies? What are signs that it’s time to see a doctor?
Winter is coming, and more people are going to want to hit the slopes this year. Great news, especially after spending so much time indoors during quarantine, but there is some hesitation. Dr. Garcia is concerned that this year there might be more injuries on the way, but they can be avoidable. Take a listen, enjoy, get your body ready, and get out and play.

Little Johnny wants to become a pro baseball player, but it all starts with little league. Dr. Grant H. Garcia shares his expertise on baseball injuries starting at the little league level and above. Dr. Garcia has authored over 70 publications in prominent peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Dr. Garcia was named a Seattle Met Top Doctor in 2019 & 2020.
We discuss common baseball injuries, such as shoulder and elbow injuries, specifically UCL tears (Tommy John), pitching, the importance of proper rest days, and adhering to the pitching guidelines laid out by littleleague.org. Is there an increased risk of injury when a player only plays a specialized sport all year long? Are there adverse effects of teaching kids how to throw breaking balls at an early age? We cover many topics and address concerns that parents and coaches may have. It's a great show and extremely thankful for Dr. Garcia's time with this important topic.
Dr. Grant H. Garcia has published over a dozen papers on this topic and his work has been featured widely including ESPN.com, Orthopedics Today, and AAOS Now.

NYSEA guest this week is Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Wayne Weil. Dr. Weil is specialized in many areas including hand surgeries and hand ailments, but also has published several scientific papers and presented his research in the field of trauma injuries at national meetings. That was the focus of our conversation. Traumatic injuries. How do people deal with the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of sustaining a traumatic injury?
This past week we saw Dak Prescott suffer a traumatic injury when he was tackled on a routine football play that led to a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle. On the same day that Dak sustained his injury, Alex Smith returned to the playing field almost 2 years after suffering a well-documented compound fracture of his tibia and fibula.
As Dr. Weil mentions in the show, the easy part is the surgery. The emotional and mental aspect of healing begins after surgery. Fascinating show. Educational and Insightful. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Check out Dr. Wayne Weil at orthopedicspecialistsofseattle.com and at seattlehandsurgeon.com

We look back at a crazy week 6 in college football starting with the Red River Rivalry. What do you want in a rivalry? Over 900 total yards, 88 points, 4 OTs, 8 TOs, blocked punt, blocked FG, and a pear tree. Wow. The SEC has another Saban coaching disciple in Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss vs Alabama did not disappoint. Want defense? Not this week. These two teams combined for almost 1,400 yards and 111 points. If Alabama doesn't fix their defense next week Georgia will exploit their weakness they way they did to Tennessee this weekend in a 44-21 win. LSU struggling this season. Who's fault is it? The Carolina Panthers that's who! What?! I'll explain it. . Take a listen to the show and enjoy it as another college football week is in the books.

Orthopedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Grant H. Garcia (GrantGarciaMD.com) discusses the growing concern over the last few weeks in the NFL of knee injuries, specifically ACL tears, what they are, and what rehab consists of. Could the lack of preseason games and shorten camps have led to more injuries? Dr. Garcia shares his advice from strength training and how to keep your knees strong, turf vs. grass fields, to the ideal versus budget realities in implementing best practices for school athletes. It’s a very informative show that we hope you enjoy.
NFLPA president JC Tretter, who is also the starting center on the Cleveland Browns, wrote, "The unforgiving nature of artificial turf compounds the grind on the body we already bear from playing a contact sport. "NFL clubs should proactively change all field surfaces to natural grass."
Data collected from 2012 to 2018 that found that players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf compared with grass. Also, non-contact injuries, players have a 32% higher rate of non-contact knee injuries on turf and a 69% higher rate of non-contact foot and ankle injuries on turf compared to grass.
Dr. Grant Garcia has advanced accredited fellowship training in sports medicine. He has published over a dozen papers on this topic and his work has been featured widely including ESPN.com, Orthopedics Today, and AAOS Now.
He has authored over 70 publications in prominent peer-review journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has presented more than 60 academic sports papers worldwide, in addition to authoring book chapters on advanced techniques in Sports Medicine. He currently serves as an Assistant Editor for Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine and is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and American Journal of Sports Medicine.

NBA Sports TV producer Jules Jacques talks NBA with NYSEA. Living in Brooklyn, NYC, and a fan of the Nets. We discuss the hiring of Steve Nash and the effect it could have on the Nets team next season. The Thunder go down to the Rockets, but it's the Rockets whos fuse is running short if they don't win an NBA title this season. Not only would D'Antoni get fired, but would the Rockets consider trading Harden? Without adequate help could this be Giannis last season with the Bucks? The Knicks stink and Jules lets me know it. Lots of NBA talk from a few sports fans.

NYC sports producer, editor & director Jules Jacques joins NYSEA to discuss the NBA. Jules a staple at the NBA, discusses his thoughts on this historic day in sports as NBA playoff games get postponed, and the future of the season has now become in jeopardy. Jules shares his thoughts, concerns, and fears as a black man and parent in America. The importance of defunding the police, and how other much-needed programs can benefit from that money. NBA has captured America's attention, but it is the WNBA who has been leading the way in societal issues for years. Kyrie Irving was ridiculed when he stated that the players shouldn't be playing basketball during these times. Now that those sentiments are shared by other players should we view Kyrie's statements differently? It's a great show, and thankful for Jules to share his thoughts and opinions on many matters. Time is now for change. as Lebron James tweeted..."F--- THIS MAN. WE DEMAND CHANGE. SICK OF IT."

Our special guest this week is Bob Scanlan. The former MLB pitcher, San Diego Padres and Fox Sports reporter joined us for a really fun and informative show. We get into the impact and importance of the Manny Machado signing with the Padres. All of the due diligence that went into signing a player like Manny and how this team believes that they are heading in an exciting direction for a franchise that has never won a World Series, but is ready to start building to a future that sees this team as a team to beat in the NL West for years to come.
We discuss San Diego's tremendous talent upside, starting with the fact that they are ranked with the #1 minor league prospect talent in all of baseball. Why Machado decided to move back to 3rd base in order to free up the SS position for Fernando Tatis jr. We discuss that. Along with talking about the art of pitching, calling a game and the bond between pitcher and catcher. We share thoughts on pace of play, should the NL have a DH, and interleague play. Conversations on Free agency, best mascot in baseball and so much more.
We start off our show with "Wow" from Post Malone and end it with a little Rage against the machine, a few of Bob Scanlan's music he likes to listen to. The most important conversation that we had with Bob? How to safely remove ice off his windshield. Great show, great guest and lots of fun.

The show was so good with so many topics that we thought we should cut it down and focus on the conversation specifically with Derek Sparks. Go to our full length of the show to hear about the Mariners and the allegations against them that they've said that "Latinos are dumb, stupid and lazy." Fun talk from a patron from the Backyard and his love of Arizona sports and more, more, more....
We are live from the Backyard in South Seattle! We have Coach/Mentor/Motivator/Author/Founder and former football player Derek Sparks with us tonight. We talk about football and coaching. The underbelly of HS sports, along with his first hand experience of that growing up and playing football in California. We discuss with him his controversy as a player and how and why colleges shied away from him. The author of "Lessons of the Game" gets into the untold story of HS football and how the student athlete is exploited.
More importantly we discuss the fight that his 18 year old daughter Ze’lee Sparks has gone through and how she has handled her battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Her great, positive outlook on life and how she will overcome her bout with Cancer.
We have a riveting discussion about Private vs Public when it comes to HS football. A senior HS Football showcase to raise awareness about Cancer and other topics. Just so much fun on NYSEA.
