Advent Devotional – Christmas DayToday is Christmas Day, and on behalf of the leadership here at Society Church, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!
We hope that as you have engaged in these scriptures, prayers, and prompts over this Advent season, you have sensed God’s present presence.
How to participate in this Christmas Devotional:
● Set aside some time today and throughout your week to re-read the scriptures & prayers. Include your family, spouse, children, housemates or friends.
● Allow yourself to ponder this scripture and reading slowly. Maybe even consider journaling your thoughts. Allow yourself the time to reflect and go deeper.
● Be drawn into this holy invitation of anticipation of what Jesus’ birth is meant to speak to us specifically during this season of Advent.
Reading:
Today our Advent reading is from the book of Luke and a few verses from the Christmas song “O Come all ye faithful”. Take note of any word or phrase that sticks out to you.
Luke 2:4-14
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will
cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
O Come All Ye Faithful
Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee, be glory given!
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing!
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
O come, all ye faithful, joyful, and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels:
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
Christmas Blessing
We come and behold you, almighty God!
We rejoice in your coming, such great news meant for all people.
May it spark joy in our hearts today as we celebrate your birth – your incredible love that extended from heaven to earth.
We embrace this gift of presence.
May it initiate something within us today that we might carry it forth, as a living expression of our most loving God.
Let it shape and form us deeply.
Hope, peace, joy, and unexplainable love birthed through your son, our Savior.
Amen.
Quiet:
We invite you to linger a little longer in this posture of reflection. After the podcast is done, set a timer for 2 minutes to sit in stillness & silence. Giving your mind and heart a moment to reflect on the prayer and scriptures you just read.
Advent Devotional – Week 4Today we celebrate the final week of Advent. Advent is a time set aside for us to turn toward reflective preparation, sacred anticipation, and a faith-stirring season rooted in the story of Jesus’ birth.
This week’s advent readings are:
Matthew 1:18-22 (ESV) // Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothedto Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Andher husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorceher quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in adream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which isconceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spokenby the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his nameemmanuel” (which means, God with us)
Romans 8:28 // And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have beencalled according to his purpose.
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 // All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the sourceof all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they aretroubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more wesuffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. Even when we areweighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves arecomforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things wesuffer. We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfortGod gives us.
Thoughts to consider this week:
Thinking back through the month of Advent, can you sense any invitations from God?
Has anything been initiated within you through God’s gift of His presence?
Is there something right now that feels chaotic? Take a moment now to write this out or offer it to God in prayer. Say a welcoming prayer, “God, I welcome you into this chaos. Increase my ability to see you through it all, and grant me peace as I walk it out with you.”
Take the last few moments in a time of gratitude. Thanking God for this gift of His presence this advent season.
The Gift of Presence: God in the ChaosAdvent is a time of waiting, anticipation, and hope. Advent marks the anniversary of God’s decision to enter the chaos of Earth and live among us. Jesus is our Emmanuel, God with us. God is with us even in the most unlikely places of life. This week we look more closely at God with us in the chaos. Enjoy the Sunday Replay from December 18th.
Advent Devotional – Week 3It’s the 3rd week of Advent. Advent is a time set aside for us to turn toward reflective preparation, sacred anticipation, and a faith-stirring season rooted in the story of Jesus’ birth. This week’s advent readings are:
Luke 2:10-11: But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
Luke 1:39-45: At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
John 14:27: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Thoughts to consider this week:
Checking in with myself, how am I coming into this time of advent reading and prayer? Is there anything specific that is surfacing for me?
What can I bring to God in prayer with complete honesty and vulnerability today?
John 14:27 says, “peace I leave with you; my peace I give you…” Invite the peace of God to rest upon you. If you are experiencing any anxiety during this time, release it to God. Invite Him to carry it with you. Ask for the peace of God to reveal the beauty that exists around you.
We invite you to linger a little longer in this posture of reflection. We encourage you to set a timer for 2 minutes to sit in stillness & silence. Giving your mind and heart a moment to reflect on the prayer, questions, and scripture we just read.
This week’s Advent Prayer:God of peace and presence,
In whom or what shall we fear?
Your coming ushered in joy and the most excellent news, in the darkest of nights.
Remind us today of your nearness. There is nothing that can separate us from Your love.
Come, Holy Spirit.
May our song arise, be it lament or praise, you are in all things, with us.
And if our hearts feel heavy or our minds full of burden, be the lifter of our heads and the peace
that calms our souls.
Again we remind ourselves, whom or what shall we fear?
God of peace.
God of presence.
Come, Holy Spirit as we live in this time of Advent.
Amen
The Gift of Presence: Living in AdventAdvent is a time of waiting, anticipation, and hope. Living in Advent, in this time of waiting, we are given this beautiful gift of presence—a vital space and time. There is something meaningful happening while living in the waiting. This week we look more closely at living in Advent and that it is a place where we discover the irreplaceable necessity of togetherness, the holy spirit, sacred songs, and being with God. Enjoy the Sunday Replay from December 11th.
Advent Devotional – Week 2Today is the 2nd week of Advent. Advent is a time set aside for us to turn toward reflective preparation, sacred anticipation, and a faith-stirring season rooted in the story of Jesus’ birth. This week’s advent readings are Isaiah 9:2, Luke 1:31-33, and 2 Corinthians 8:9.
Thoughts to consider this week:
Jesus enters into the story of humanity as Emmanuel, “God is with us”. A sign of hope, light coming into the darkness. As you think back over this year, how has God been revealed to you in your own life and story as light shining into darkness? Recount or journal your experience.
How might God be inviting you to be a carrier of his light to those around you, especially right now?
Consider spending some time reflecting and praying about how you might want God to move more deeply in your life as a source of provision. Jot those ideas or longings down, and bring those to God in prayer with trusting faith.
We invite you to linger a little longer in this posture of reflection. We encourage you to set a timer for 2 minutes to sit in stillness & silence. Giving your mind and heart a moment to reflect on the prayer, questions, and scripture we just read.
The Gift of Presence: God’s Presence in our PovertyAdvent is a time of waiting, anticipation, and hope. It’s the space between the two comings of Jesus. One of these we celebrate at Christmas, and one as we await Jesus’ imminent return to make all things new.
The focus of this year’s Advent is “the gift of presence.” Our hope is to encourage people to be present, face to face, side by side with one another, as much as possible, through this time as we celebrate the gift of presence we have in Jesus our Emmanuel.
This week we are going to be looking at finding God’s presence in our poverty.
Listen to the Week 2 Advent Devotional
Advent Devotional – Week 1Yesterday marked the first week of Advent. A time set aside for us to turn toward reflective preparation, sacred anticipation, and a faith-stirring season rooted in the story of Jesus’ birth. This week’s advent readings are Isaiah 1:14, John 1:14, and Psalm 46:10.
Thoughts to consider this week:
What am I longing, hoping, or expecting in my life for this season of Advent? Am I open to inviting God into those things?
How can I embrace more intentional rhythms of silence and stillness in God’s Presence?
Is there a time I have experienced the distinct presence of God in my life? Consider taking a few minutes to offer prayers of gratitude for God’s attentive presence to you.
We invite you to linger a little longer in stillness and silence. Consider setting a timer for 2 minutes, giving your mind and heart a moment to reflect on the prayer, questions, and scripture we just read.
The Gift of PresenceAdvent is a time of waiting, anticipation, and hope. It’s the space between the two comings of Jesus. One of these we celebrate at Christmas, and one as we await Jesus’ imminent return to make all things new.
The focus this year is going to be on “the gift of presence.” We aren’t doing online or patio gatherings for this time through advent to encourage people to be present, face to face, side by side with one another as much as possible through this time as we celebrate the gift of presence we have in Jesus our Emmanuel which means God with us.
This week we are going to be looking at finding God’s presence in the silence.

Pick and choose what you feel will make the most impact for your group. If you are not sure where to start, just ask your group what stuck out to them about the message most and start with that.)
Read this scripture together:
John 20:24-30 (NIV)
24 Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Observation & Reflection Questions to Discuss:
STEP 3- Living- Planning, Accountability, Action * Tim talked about some different steps in dealing with doubt (1. Admit it to God and others, 2. Talk through it with God and others, 3. Find answers, stop doubting and believe). Which tends to be the hardest step for you? * What does it mean to you that God chose to live through and experience human suffering, humiliation, injustice and death? * What might it mean for you to be present with a God who suffers and is present in our sufferings? (Hebrews 12:1-4) * How have you experienced “life in his name” or the “abundant & fulfilling” life Jesus said we would have in him? (John 10:10)
STEP 4- Prayer And/Or Meditation Please don’t skip prayer!! Cut the discussion short if needed to pray for one another 🙂 Try one of these options, don’t be afraid to mix it up.

John 21:15-22
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
Observation & Reflection Questions to Discuss:
STEP 3- Living- Planning, Accountability, Action * Vanessa talked about “Facing our past with God”. Although a challenging path for some, a worth while one. Can you share an experience where God has brought some healing from your past or is working on in you now? Or is there a past experience that is surfacing for you that you’d like to find some healing admits. Can you relate to feeling stuck? * Secondly, she talked about “Living in the present with God”. She said “we can either get stuck focused on our past or so fixated with our future that we miss living in the present”, is this something you can relate to? What present moments might we/you be more aware to in this season? Do you think God wants to meet you with grace, mercy and love? * Third she talked about “Following God into our future”. Are you able to put to words a future hope for your life? Do believe God is speaking into that? When it comes to the “future” is that a space you tend to include God to speak into? * Out of these three areas we discovered in this conversation between Peter and Jesus, is there one you’d like to be more actively aware of in your journey of discipleship/faith?
STEP 4- Prayer And/Or Meditation Please don’t skip prayer!! Cut the discussion short if needed to pray for one another 🙂 Try one of these options, don’t be afraid to mix it up.
Eastertide: Week 4 This week our Leadership Team joins us for a Q + A panel. We centered discussion around a passage in John 20!
Learn more about Spiritual Practices we discussed in our panel, and discover more about creating a rhythm during this shelter in place here -> http://societychurch.com/rhythm/
It’s hard to stay connected during this time. Community Groups meet all through the week to discuss the teaching from Sunday, pray together + to stay connected. If you haven’t had a chance yet, we want to encourage you to join a Community Group -> Here
Community Group Discussion Guide: STEP 1- Ice Breaker Help people to loosen up and share. It will be helpful if someone is new to go around and do names and have each person share about a question and share a bit about themselves. CLICK HERE for ice breaker questions ideas.
(Group Leader Note: Use the Learning/Living Circle to guide your discussion and application of the content. Try your best to keep the “learning” and “living” focus balanced. You use this model moving clockwise around the circle. The goal is working towards practical and personal life application.)
Step 2- Learning- Observe, Reflect, Discuss (Group Leader Note: Don’t feel the need to go through every scripture, point or question. Pick and choose what you feel will make the most impact for your group. If you are not sure where to start, just ask your group what stuck out to them about the message most and start with that.)

John 20:19-22- “On the evening of that day, *the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”***

John 21:1-19 (NIV)
“Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.[a] It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you caught any fish?” “No,” they answered. 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.”
7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Observation & Reflection Questions to Discuss:
STEP 3- Living- Planning, Accountability, Action * How might you be able to hear the voice of God calling out to you from the shore during this season? * What might progress or a next step forward look like for you in your spiritual journey of faith? * What might be some things in your past that God wants to extend forgiveness and restoration towards? * What present moment circumstances might God be wanting to meet with you amidst? * What future might God be wanting to prophetically speak over your life?
STEP 4- Prayer And/Or Meditation Please don’t skip prayer!! Cut the discussion short if needed to pray for one another 🙂 Try one of these options, don’t be afraid to mix it up.

Read these scriptures together:
1 Corinthians 12:18
(NIV) But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.
(NLT) But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.
1 Corinthians 12:27-31
“27 Now you all are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues (different languages). 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues (different languages)? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.”
1 Corinthians 13:1-3
“And yet I will show you the most excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal . 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”
Observation & Reflection Questions to Discuss:
STEP 3- Living- Planning, Accountability, Action * How might you be able to “be the church” during this season without being able to “go to church” and be physically present with one another? * What are some helpful practices that help you to reflect on and identify motivations? * How might motivations in life be purified through this singular focus of love? * What are some intentional ways to love God, love others & do self care?
