I’m really excited to share this episode with Dr. Lynda Loudon — an emergency veterinarian, end-of-life practitioner, and one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I know in veterinary medicine.
This conversation goes far beyond dog health. We explore the deep connection we share with our dogs, the fear of making the wrong decisions, and the pressure many of us feel to do everything perfectly for the animals we love.
Along the way, we’ll get into:
• Knowing when it’s time to say goodbye
• Why more time isn’t always better time
• Cancer, pesticides, and environmental toxins
• The emotional burden carried by dog guardians
• Hormone-sparing spays, vasectomies, and long-term health
• What dogs can teach us about presence, love, and letting go
There’s laughter, vulnerability, honesty, and so many moments in this episode that I think will stay with you long after you listen.

What starts as a playful card game quickly turns into a deep dive into dog health myths, grief, resilience, and what it really means to speak the truth in veterinary medicine.
We explore the “elephants in the room” and why it can be so hard (and sometimes risky) for vets to talk about them openly. This year, I had the privilege to meet some of you in Florida and Mallorca where I was presenting, and I also became friends with some of my colleagues vets and healers, I never met in person before.
Connecting with likeminded people is the reason I’m starting something new.
A new interview series I’m calling Get to Know Your Vet (GTKYV) 🐾
Each episode is a fun, relaxed, informal conversation between me and a fellow veterinarian.
But here is something different. Of course we talk dogs, but we also talk about our lives, feelings and what we do outside of work. We talk about life, our values, mistakes and lessons learned.
When you watch, I want you to feel like the three of us are sitting together, sharing stories and ideas, not being “taught” or sold anything.
Why does this matter?
Because I feel you deserve to know your vets! I thought it would be nice for your to know why we do what we do. What the question, and why we changed our mind about medicine, nutrition and healing in general.
My hope is that these conversations help you feel even more connected and supported on your dog’s health journey.
Not just because you’re getting information, but because you’re getting to know the humans beyond the vet talk.
That’s what Get to Know Your Vet is really about.
It feels especially meaningful to begin this series with someone I respect deeply and is also a great conference organizer and the community connector, Dr. Judy Morgan.
This episode goes far beyond veterinary medicine. It’s about values, marriage, grief, boundaries, leadership, and what happens when we slow down enough to truly listen.
I hope you enjoy it as much as we did ❤️

Dr. Michelle Kutzler's journey into understanding the impact of sterilization on dogs began with a personal experience that shook her professional beliefs.
After witnessing the devastating effects of cancer on her in-laws' Rottweilers, it sparked her curiosity about the potential link between sterilization and health issues. A pivotal lecture by Dr. David Waters opened her eyes to the crucial role of ovaries in canine longevity, challenging everything she had been taught in veterinary school.
Dr. Kutzler's research revealed that removing gonads leads to elevated luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, which can cause a myriad of health problems, including urinary incontinence, skin issues, and even cancer.
The good news is that there are hormone-sparing alternatives to traditional spaying and neutering, which can prevent reproduction while maintaining hormonal balance.
In this initial segment of our two-part discussion, we discuss these alternatives and the importance of educating both veterinarians and pet owners about the long-term health impacts of traditional sterilization methods.

I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact of hormones on our canine companions' health and behavior, and the recent update to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) guidelines on neutering is a game-changer.
Hormones aren't just about reproduction; they're crucial for overall well-being.
When we remove them through traditional spaying and neutering, we're inadvertently causing a cascade of health issues such as an increased risk of cancers and joint issues.
My own dog, Pax, experienced many of these issues after neutering. It wasn't until we started hormone replacement therapy that I saw a dramatic improvement in his health and vitality.
The good news is we have alternatives and solutions, which we discuss in this episode.

In this episode, I explain how toxic positivity leads to the perception that emotions are divided into two groups, the negative and the positive. Anger, frustration, fear, and feeling overwhelmed, are normal emotions just the same as joy, happiness, and excitement. They would not be able to exist without each other, and they are all part of being human.
I also share my thoughts on embracing your inner beauty while aging, not viewing wrinkles as a failure but as a sign of wisdom, grace, and a well-lived life.
Thank you for listening!

Awesome to see you here! I gather it’s because you care a little more.
Do you know a fearful or reactive dog? What if dog restrictions and leash laws are at the core of dog behaviour issues? I’ve spoken on this topic many times, and I won’t stop until countries like the USA and Canada recognize how important dogs are to our wellbeing and that marginalizing and restricting access does not work.
I have lived in three different countries, Canada, the USA and the Czech Republic. I have seen the difference freedom, trust, and socialization make in the quality of life for people, dogs, and society.
If you are interested in igniting a dog freedom movement in your area, email me at customercare@peterdobias.com, and together we will spread the word.

If there is one interview you should listen to, this is it. I had the privilege of speaking with Lana Niland, a Canadian who has been living in Ukraine since 2003. We discuss the brave work she is doing to help the people and animals of Ukraine, and how we can all contribute to her efforts.
This interview has not been edited or sugarcoated - so there is some upsetting content for animal lovers - but it will give you a balanced view of what is happening in Ukraine. If we want to change the world, we need to understand what is wrong and the media doesn't always report things accurately.
Thank you for listening, sharing, and possibly donating if you are able to through the links below. ❤️🐶✌️🇺🇦

Has your doctor ever suggested that you eat a diet made up only of processed foods? Of course not!
For some reason, humans are capable of feeding their families a wholesome diet, but when it comes to feeding our dogs, things can get very complicated.
In this episode, Dr. Dobias discusses nutrition for puppies and adult dogs, and why simply following nature can help you avoid health issues in your dog, including painful bone growth and joint problems.
Listen as Dr. Dobias dives deep into how to achieve the correct ratio of Calcium and Phosphorus in our dogs’ food; how to balance a raw diet for dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages (even puppies!); why supplements are necessary and why good food is no longer enough; if there is healthy kibble for dogs; and how to prepare nutritious, natural food for your dog at home.

It may surprise you, but 25 years ago, Dr. Peter Dobias was once a top-selling processed food veterinarian in his province of British Columbia. So, why did this once award-winning “kibble seller” ditch the processed food in favour of a natural, species-appropriate diet for our canine friends? And what were the major health problems and warning signs Dr. Dobias noticed in puppies and dogs that made him question the kibble status quo?
In this episode, discover 15 common myths about puppy nutrition that have lifelong health consequences for dogs. Learn how these myths came to be and why they still persist today. You will also learn about all the free tools and information available on Dr. Dobias’ website that will help give puppies the best and healthiest start to life.

Awesome to see you here! I gather it's because you care a little more.
In this first episode of a three-part series on raising healthy puppies, Dr. Dobias uncovers the first common, yet harmful, myth about how to rear a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted puppy.
Many well-meaning dog parents have been told by their veterinarian that it is dangerous to socialize their pup before they get all their “puppy shots.” In reality, this approach is harmful for puppy socialization and is based on decades of misinformation, the greed of vaccine manufacturers, and a general complacency with the status quo.
Dr. Dobias also discusses how to harness the power of a puppy’s natural immunity, and outlines a vaccination protocol that reduces the number of vaccines needed, while allowing them to safely socialize with other pups and gentle adult dogs.
Discover this and much more in an informative three-part puppy series.

Do you think you and your dog are alike? What do you most enjoy about your dog? Does your dog ever make you feel embarrassed, frustrated, or angry because they’ve been acting naughty? I cover these questions and more in this episode.
I also discuss why some dogs become aggressive, and why punishment and negative training can backfire. I provide an overview of a gentle and respectful approach that can help even the most misbehaved and/or misunderstood dogs.
I round out the episode with some insight into what we can learn from our dogs, and why it’s so important to take a close look at their health and behaviours, because they are often a reflection of our own lives.

Nature is the perfect architect. Every bone, blood vessel, nerve, muscle, and organ is placed in an intricate and deliberate design. But what happens when something in the design becomes out of place or misaligned?
Dogs love to play, chase, and be active, which often leads to spinal twists, misalignments, and injuries. Many well-meaning dog lovers use collars and retractable leashes that can also cause damage to a dog’s alignment.
These subtle injuries are most often undetected and untreated, because most veterinarians are not trained to recognize these invisible changes in the spine and muscles.
Spinal misalignment can present in surprising ways, such as scratching, skin rashes, muscle spams, diarrhea, incontinence, stomach bloat, paw licking, and even organ failure.
Learn more about the “pinched hose” principle and what you can do if you suspect your dog has an undetected misalignment or injury.

Can you believe that everything in this universe, from your dog to a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, are made out of the same building blocks? But what happens when those building blocks are missing, or are in short supply?
In an ideal world (and the African Savanna), all of our building blocks would be perfectly supplied through the food we eat. However, our modern world has created one of the most disturbing imbalances: nutrient deficiencies in our soil.
This is a big “uh-oh” for people, dogs, and other animals, as disease often begins with depleted nutrients - such as minerals.
Listen to this podcast to find out how to solve this serious problem.
