In this episode, Beth tells us the story of Gayle Newland of Manchester, UK. Without giving too much away, Gayle held an intimate relationship with someone while pretending to be someone else, and it all blew up (and resulted in her having charges brought against her). In this episode, we talk about all the moving parts in this story and some other interesting topics come to the surface around transgender rights and relationships.

In this episode, we talk about the harmful effects of Purity Culture. Whatever the intentions were/ are, the movement has failed to recognize the harmful rhetoric it created and how it has hurt many people who grew up in this environment. And, they’re speaking out about it… in MASSES!
Maybe you grew up in an evangelical environment that taught purity culture or maybe this entire topic sounds foreign to you. Either way, you are going to have thoughts and feelings on this episode. You’ll either be screaming, “yes… that was me too!!” or “what the heck do people actually teach their kids??” The important thing is that we are having these conversations to create an approach to sexual education that doesn’t leave kids and grown adults with a lifetime of shame and fear.

Would you believe me if I told you that the placement of the United States major highways was constructed to perpetuate racism and segregation? This week we talked about the racist nature of the interstate highway system in the United States, and how most all major cities used roads and highways to segregate our communities and disadvantage minorities. This was a truly mind-blowing podcast.

In this episode, Adam and Beth talk through the painful reality of where America is today in race relations. Daunte Wright's tragic death and the continual harassment being perpetrated against the AAPI community can’t go unnoticed.
Although these subjects are difficult and discouraging, it’s important we keep a spotlight on these issues and advocate for social justice for these marginalized communities.
Our hope is that you are motivated to do your part as an ally. And if you are a person who is part of a marginalized community that is being targeted by harassment, know that you are seen, loved, and believed by us.

Of the roughly 41 Million Evangelicals in America, 45% (per a Pew Research Poll) said they would not get the Covid19 Vaccine. As people raised by Evangelicals, this is confusing as both Beth and Adam were vaccinated as children and were taught vaccines are safe and effective. What's changed? This week, we discussed why we believe so many Evangelicals aren't getting the Covid19 Vaccine. Take a listen and let us know what you think.

Welp, we finally went there.
This week, our esteemed colleague and "Alec Baldwin of SNL" of the Podcast David Podhaskie joined the podcast to discuss his latest Medium article Donald Trump, Qanon, and the Rapture.While we do get into how the Evangelical idea of a Rapture can easily pave the roadway for a conspiracy theory like Qanon, we spend a majority of the podcast talking about the Rapture, the effect it has had on our lives based on how we were raised. This was an awesome conversation but also we felt the gravity and weight of it on our shoulders from our upbringing. It goes without saying that we want to hear from you on this one.

This week, our topic of conversation centered around a Facebook Post by a friend of the podcast Danny Leiva. Danny wrote a really thoughtful post on Cancel Culture and Kirk Franklin. Recently, an audio recording between Christian Gospel Icon Kirk Franklin and his son was leaked. In the audio, Franklin can be heard cursing out his son and saying pretty awful things to him.

This week we continued our coverage of the Academy Award Nominated Netflix Documentary, 13th.
13th is a 2016 American documentary film by director Ava DuVernay. The film explores the "intersection of race, justice, and mass incarceration in the United States;" it is titled after the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, adopted in 1865, which abolished slavery throughout the United States and ended involuntary servitude except as a punishment for conviction of a crime.
DuVernay contends that slavery has been perpetuated since the end of the American Civil War through criminalizing behavior and enabling police to arrest poor freedmen and force them to work for the state under convict leasing; suppression of African Americans by disenfranchisement, lynchings, and Jim Crow; politicians declaring a war on drugs that weighs more heavily on minority communities and, by the late 20th century, mass incarceration of people of color in the United States. She examines the prison-industrial complex and the emerging detention-industrial complex, discussing how much money is being made by corporations from such incarcerations.
13th garnered acclaim from a number of film critics. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards, and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards.

We talked specifically about how women are treated in Hasidic Jewish communities as chronicled in the story, as well as how women are treated and viewed in a majority of main religions.
We also talked about how nuts are technically a fruit.

This week was a doozy! We discussed the concept of life in prison without any option for parole. Beth tells the story of Susan Lawrence (a doctor AND a lawyer) who worked tirelessly to help a man in prison for life get parole, and then he turned on her. We're launching this episode a few days early as we've started the isolation process and wanted to get this out. This week, we discussed the current thing everybody in the world is thinking and talking about: Covid19. We've made a decision to isolate for the good of our community and talk through what that looks like for us. In addition, we discuss how some people are taking this pandemic lightly, and why we think that's a bad idea. We make the argument that it's the ethical thing to do to self-isolate, prevent the spread, and put everyone in the best position to make it through this.

Adoption Isn’t Pretty
This week on the podcast we had guest, Melanie Chung Sherman, on to help us navigate the misunderstood and many times unidentified negative effects of adoption. It was fascinating and at the end of an hour, we were left wanting more information.
It wasn’t an easy topic because many of us don’t realize the total devastation that happens in many adoptee's lives due to varying circumstances in the way we communicate what it means to be adopted. It’s a community of people who have been overlooked and we can’t ignore the data that shows that there are emotional needs being neglected that are specific to adoptees.

What's inconceivably worse is how his parents won a lawsuit but were unable to collect 80% of it due to a state-mandated cap. This is otherwise known as Tort Reform. This week we talk about the death of Harry Dunn, a 19-year-old teenager. Harry, an English citizen, was riding his motorcycle in Northhamptonshire, England when a vehicle crossed into the wrong lane, struck him and killed him. The woman who hit him was a US Citizen named Anne Sacoolas, who happened to be the wife of a CIA agent stationed in the UK. Sacoolas fled the UK and came back to the US with her husband, and is now claiming diplomatic immunity, escaping charges in the UK. We dive deep in this one and have a great conversation.

This week we interviewed Hillary Scholten who is eyeing to become the first Democratic Congresswoman in West Michigan's history (and first congresswoman since the mid-50s). Hillary shared many elements of her platform, but more than that, she described why she believes what she does. We also talked about the challenges she faces in this election because she's a woman and the uniqueness of a three-party race. It was a fascinating and inspiring conversation.

This week we discussed the tragic murder of Botham Jean, a 26-year-old man who was shot and killed in his own apartment, by a police officer who confused it for her own. We talk through the murder, the trial, Botham's brother's forgiveness, and dive deep into this notion of forgiveness specifically when it comes to forgiving crimes around racial bias and hate.

Beth tells Adam about a discovery David Dunning, a Cornell professor, and his colleague, Justin Kruger, made when they decided to investigate people's lack of ability in correlation to an abundance of confidence. For our inaugural episode, we thought of an easy light-hearted topic: Policing and Racial Bias! In this episode, Adam tells the story of Grand Rapids Police Captain Curt Vanderkooi, who after hearing about an incident on the news, instructed ICE to detain Jilmar Ramos-Gomez. Turns out, Ramos-Gomez was not only a US Citizen, but a US Marine and Veteran who served in Afghanistan. The conversation heats up from there as we discuss racial bias within the police force.
The wine we drank during this episode was a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo by Nevio. It's a medium bodied wine that is fruit forward. Slight oaky notes with a moderate cherry taste coupled with a hint of vanilla. We loved it and would highly recommend. You can find it here.
