In this heartening episode of the Online Tutor Business Podcast, we sit down with Sharon Canaday, a former teacher whose journey through the education system led her to a profound career pivot. Sharon opens up about the pivotal moment that reshaped her path: the day her teaching contract wasn't renewed. This unexpected turn of events, while initially a source of deep pain, became the catalyst for a remarkable transformation.
Sharon shares the bittersweet transition of joining a tutoring company, a move that, in hindsight, she views with regret due to restrictive contracts that limited her ability to truly connect with her students. However, it's in these moments of reflection that Sharon's resilience shines brightest. Determined to forge a path that aligned with her values and vision, she embarked on the journey of developing her own tutoring business.
Within a year, Sharon began welcoming her own students, crafting a tutoring experience that prioritized personalized learning and one-on-one engagement. Tutors can tutor one on one or in groups. The beauty of tutoring in groups is that the tutor can make significantly more money. Not all tutors agree on this idea are charging the same amount when adding more students because they see their time as money and that is how much money they should make. This brings us to an interesting conversation with many viewpoints and perspectives. I enjoyed having the conversation to understand deeper what drives people to price their services the way that they when adding other students.
According to a study from Harvard University, 85% of the skills you need to be successful in any job include soft skills. Often times as we think about starting a tutoring business we focus on how to get students, take payment, and tutor. We rarely focus on the soft skills that will make us more desirable to work with. Today Michael Gibben and Joanne Kaminski discuss the top ten skills needed to run a successful business. Join the special training on June 13th here. https://www.onlinetutorcoach.com/leadership-skills-summit-for-tutors
With the recent changes in Zoom, many tutors have been looking for alternatives. Today you are going to hear from a tutor that is just getting started as a tutor and another tutor that has been tutoring on the side for years. Together we discuss the business mindset that is involved with running an online tutoring business and what makes sense. We dive into what a business mindset is and how to look at our tutoring business from that perspective.
The science of reading may be a familiar or unfamiliar term for you. Today I am going to dive deeper into what is the science of reading and how do we use it to inform our instruction. Louisa Moats said Teaching reading is rocket science. This means that it is complicated, but if we know what the main components are and the best strategies to teach those components, we gain clarity on what we need to do for all kids to get them reading. According to the NAEP, 65% of the students in the United States are below grade level. If the science of teaching reading and a student’s zone of proximal development are matched, we can easily close this gap and create more proficient readers regardless if they have dyslexia or not.
Over 268 people have gone through the Jumpstart Your Online Tutoring Business Masterclass, but only 10 have made it into the Tutorpreneur Hall of Fame. Today you get to hear how Letrice made it into the hall of fame. Letrice received the most points as she went through this program. She booked a homeschool student for 5 days a week for at least 3 hours each day and got 4 online tutoring students. Letrice didn’t start off in the world of teaching, but her heart today is being led where it was meant to be. Take a listen to hear Letrice’s story.
What leadership skills do you need to run an online tutoring business. Today our guest Michael Gibben, the coach for tutors will be these skills as you go on your journey with growing your business. He starts with the skills all tutors need to have and then he transitions into what skills you need as you scale your business. Keep listening as Michael dives deeper into these leadership skills.
Today you get to hear the script flipped. Typically I interview people, but today you are going to get to hear an interview where I share my tutoring journey and what that is like as an online reading tutor, and how I help other tutors. I was live on a radio show called the World of Work and the host of that show is Shep Cohen.
Do you love listening to other tutors' journeys to find out how they became successful? I know I do. Today I am joined by Justine Forelli, Natalie Morales, and Crystal Harrison who share their experience with teaching, how they decided to become online tutors, how their business is going today and what their future looks like in the industry.
Should you create a website. This is something that all tutors wonder in the beginning. Today you are going to hear how helpful having a website has been for tutors getting found without having to seek out students on their own. Over time, it is like people are googling and finding you. This is what we all dream of. This doesn’t happen overnight, but if you set up your website correctly, it can begin doing some work for you. Join Suzanne Davis and Beth Hansford as they share website secrets that will help you to get found over and over again.
Instagram! Imagine making a few posts each week, and commenting on others people's posts. Doesn’t seem so hard. Right? It isn’t, but here is the thing. The things that are easy to do, are also easy not to do. Today you are going to hear from Esmy Lozano an online reading tutor and how she has been getting requests weekly for her tutoring services right from Instagram. The best part, is other tutors are doing it too. Learn how. If you are interested in learning more, you can join our course called Rock the Gram.
Ever wonder what other tutors’ experiences are like that are reaching 4 figures a month? Today you get to hear from the newest members that are being inducted into the 4 figure a month club. Justine Forelli just started her business in August and has reached numbers she never thought possible after 4 months of starting her business. In order to get into the 4 Figure a Month club, a tutor needs to be in the Insider Secrets Club and earn 4-figures for at least 3 months. Sharon Frazier-Verpooten has been in our community for a while is almost at that 5 figure a month club. She was able to leave her teaching job and be a homeschooling mom for her twins and 18 month old. Such an inspiration. Demitra Bryant has also been in our community for years and today she is getting recognized for her amazing triumph being inducted into the club.
You may have heard that blogging can be a great strategy for getting new online tutoring students, but you doubt that you can really do it. I mean, what do you write about? The number 1 reason tutors don't blog is writer's block. They get stuck on what to write about. Today you are going to Listen to tutors' stories of how they overcame writer's block and finally began writing on the blog they always dreamed of. The solution is easier than you think.
The holiday season can be a stressful time with your tutoring business. There are reschedules that need to be made, cancellations, new clients, along with you getting ready for the season. There are presents to buy, cards to send out, cookies to make and family gatherings to attend. Join me today as I chat with Michelle Willette, a life coach, about how to destress during the holiday season so that we can get back to the true joy you were meant to experience.
Scheduling during the holidays can be a nightmare. Some students are taking some time off, some are ending their services, and some want to continue. Allen Tsao is a high school and college Math Tutor, Esmy Lozano is an elementary reading tutor, and Beth Hansford is a Spanish tutor. Listen to how they will be scheduling during the holidays. They even gave me a few ideas.

Find out what it took to get this point and how they are able to sustain these results. Let’s welcome these amazing tutors to the club. 4A4xJ8ZyyNiQKQtPj0X2
What is dyslexia and can people still learn to read if they have it. Today you are going to hear an incredible story from Daniel Franklin the author of Helping Your Child with Language-Based Learning Disabilities. What I found most incredible about Daniel through this interview is that he himself has dyslexia. He shares what it was like, who helped him, and how kids can learn with it.
Tutors that are passionate about getting better at their craft are always seeking training that will take them to the next level. Adelle transitioned from the classroom to online reading tutoring. Ana Martin an online Latin tutor often experiences kids that struggle with reading and she was curious to know how to help her students better. Learn how both of these tutors benefitted from the Reading Interventionist Program and what their experiences were like.
Many tutors face adversity, but today’s guest has had his share and overcome each obstacle that has gotten in his way to create a multimillion-dollar tutoring company. Brian Tom started creating his business at the age of 20 with just $4,000 in his pocket. Over the next ten years, he suffered from glaucoma and quickly needed to transition from being able to see the world from within. As a blind CEO, he started doing business differently. If that wasn’t enough, in 2017 he suffered from a heart attack and was unsure if he would experience another day. Today Brian’s business is completely online and he has a new mission. Come join us to hear how Brian has walked through all of this and pivoted his business when he needed to at all the right times.
Today’s guest gets the most humble tutor award. He’s a dad, a husband, and an amazing online writing tutor. In the beginning, Dustin was like most tutors starting out. He was unsure what he wanted to tutor and thought that by tutoring many subjects that he would be able to get more students. Now he has niched down and is booked solid. Hear how Dustin got 12 students in 6 weeks in the Jumpstart Your Online Tutoring Business Masterclass.
Has your tutoring business begun to explode? You are now at a point where you have sold all of your tutoring hours and you are wondering what the next step is. Learn how Elaine Lindgard has taken her In person tutoring business completely online and hired other tutors to keep the momentum going and make more money. Today Elaine is such an inspiration from a solo tutor in a center to a full blown tutoring agency.
The online tutoring business can be lonely. You work a lot from and with Covid aren’t really to get out a lot. But what if there was a community that not only allowed you to feel less alone, but also gave you perks to the business. See getting to know other tutors is an incredible way to grow your online tutoring business. Not only do you get to keep learning, but you also get to network. Listen to hear other tutors experiences with networking and community.
Wouldn't life be great if you could fast forward to just getting results in our tutoring business? Sometimes it feels like we are not getting students fast enough, but today you are going to learn the power of persevering even when you are not getting the results you want and as fast as you want them.
There are 3 stages of how people feel about their tutoring that will guide you in where you are at in your journey with pricing your tutoring services. Keep listening to learn what they are.
Have you ever wondered why people are saying that they can’t afford your tutoring services? When I have personally worked with tutors I have noticed that the ones that struggle with this all struggle with the same thing. Confidence. In this episode you are going to learn how to be more confident so that people want to work with you and pay you what you charge.
Every other month Joanne Kaminski awards a new tutor the Tutorpreneur Hero Award and these tutors always go on to do great things. Check out what some of the past tutors are up to and where their business is at today. Audrey Codner Gibson is just 4 months into the business and already making $5,000 a month and Allen Tsao was able to have his wife stay home while he worked his tutoring business 25 hours a week allowing him to be more present in his 3 little ones lives. Then we have our perky Rachel Berntsen who is completely booked solid. Keep listening to the little tips they share and how you can apply their advice to your tutoring business.
For years people have told us what a path to success looks like. You go to school, get good grades, go to college, and get a job. But very rarely do people ask you what you want to have when you grow up. Young kids can get really creative with this. They picture themselves in a mansion, with lots of cars, and the amount of money in which they never have to worry about anything ever. But then we the adults in our lives try to right-size us. They tell us that that is wishful thinking. They say things like you will never get that or they say, good luck with that, let me know how that works for you. And then what happens. We let life take control of us, vs. controlling our life. So today, Terri Grigsby and I will be sharing how to think big so that you can create the tutoring business of your dreams and your dreams can buy you your dream life.
It is really easy to come up with excuses for why I can’t accomplish things. The market is too saturated, my husband doesn’t support me, I am a single mom, or a host of other things. But, when we make excuses we are transferring the owner of responsibility. It is outside of me, therefore I have no control over it. That couldn’t be further from the truth. When we take a look at what we can control and decide to not make excuses, then we can see our tutoring business soar. So join me today as Max Pavlovsky, an online math tutor and I chat about the cure for excuses. The ability to make excuses and never take responsibility for my actions.
Last week we started chatting about the book The Magic of Thinking Big. This week I have invited Suzanne Davis to join me to chat about the failure disease. One thing we uncovered was that we often underestimate our own brainpower while overestimating the other tutor’s brainpower. When we compare ourselves to others, we naturally think it is easier for them and that they are better at this than we are. But what if that other person is just as nervous as you? It doesn’t do us any good to compare so tune in as Suzanne and I share our thoughts.
Over the next 13 weeks we are going to be discussing the Magic of Thinking Big so that as a tutor you can develop the right thoughts that take you to the right actions. To be part of a career that is fulfilling and meaningful. She hit the nail on the head. Later in the podcast we shared the 3 steps to develop the power of belief so you can fire Mr. Defeat and hire Mr. Triumph.
Creating a tutoring business with strong systems that help you run your business more efficiently is extremely important and that is why our guest today Eric Branner has created a system to handle things that used to take hours out of his busy day. What I love about Eric is his deep-down understanding of how our businesses are really relationship businesses and the more time we can put into building those relationships with empathy and care, the more your tutoring business will profit.

Connecting with schools and building relationships with them is a great way to get teachers referring your tutoring services. Not all schools are open to this idea, but some are. There are tutors who have been able to get enough schools referring them, that they do not need to focus on adding to many more actions into their funnel because of these referrals, so it is definitely a good strategy to try.
Listen to the advice here, try it, and see if you can get found because you were added to tutoring lists.
