In 2017, I took a trip to a mysterious peninsula in northern Greece where the monks who live there in solitude, fast for many hours a day and are pescatarian/vegan show remarkable longevity. That peninsula is Mount Athos.
Here I speak to Dr Pete Patitsas - a Greek-American emergency doctor who has taken their methods and turned them into a weight-loss diet. It's a fascinating chat that delves into Covid, obesity and intermittent fasting and looks at how these 1,000-year-old habits may help us live longer.
How we recover from the stress of life or the stress of an intense exercise programme is super important when it comes to our long-term health. In this episode I welcome world-renowned conditioning specialist Joel Jamieson who talks us through how to cut through the vast amount of data given to us by our wearables to get some meaningful stats, why going 'balls to the wall' is not always the best strategy and how to ensure we live a long and fruitful life.

Our microbiome - the vital bacteria that live along and inside us - outnumbers our own cells by three to one, so it's vitally important we look after it.
In this episode we talk to Debbie Cotton of Invivo Healthcare about why it's so important, what DNA stool testing can reveal, what prebiotics are and which to take, and whether probiotics are really needed.
If you want to dig deep and find out how taking care of your microbiome can aid with all manner of illnesses from asthma to diabetes or how manipulating it can be a great biohacking tool, this is the episode for you.
Full disclosure Invivo Healthcare is a company that conducts stool tests and produces supplements - but Debbie also suggests real food alternatives in this fascinating podcast.

In this episode of the Nutrition Lab, James Ellis of Endure Nutrition, Health & Fitness welcomes back fellow clinical nutritionist Sarah Beecroft to talk about some basic biohacking for beginners. For those who don’t know, biohacking is the relatively new practice of trying to optimise your body’s functionality through using nutrition and lifestyle interventions.
While it’s normally associated with some high-tech monitoring devices such as the Oura Ring sleep monitor, there are many small interventions people can make to improve things such as energy levels, their immune response and relaxation. Here James and Sarah discuss some of their favourite simple hacks that anyone can employ easily and cheaply.

Two years ago at Spartathlon, the iconic 153-mile ultramarathon race that takes place in Greece every September, I met ultra legend Dean Karnazes, last year I presented him with a British Spartathlon Team shirt, this year he agreed to come on the podcast and talk about his nutrition strategies!
For those who don't know Dean, he is an ultramarathon running legend. Perhaps not the best runner ever, but certainly, outside running circles at least, the best-known ultra runner. His achievements include winning the 135-mile Badwater race, completing 11 finishes at the iconic 100-mile Western States race, running 50 marathons in 50 days in every state in the USA and transversing the US from west to east.
Dean is also an author who penned the NT Times best-seller Ultramarathon Man and, more recently The Road to Spartaabout his attempt to follow in the footsteps of Athenian messenger Pheidippides by running Spartathlon on a diet similar to what the hmerodromos (day runner) would have done 2,500 years ago when he was sent by Athens to ask for Spartan help in the Battle of Marathon.
Here Dean talks about how he fuels both his runs and his every day life and gives an insight into how he got into running and what his greatest challenge has been.
Dean's books are a great read for those who want to know more about ultra running and Spartathlon. You can pick them up at the following links:

Our guts and brain are inextricably linked through the vagus nerve that deals with parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system control of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. As research into the connection between the two increases and more is also understood about the microbiome, people are increasingly referring to the gut as the second brain.
In this episode of The Nutrition Lab, James speaks to Yasmina Cherquaoui of Ready, Steady Glow (www.readysteadyglow.uk) about meditation, mindfulness and the gut-brain connection. Yasmina is an experienced yoga and meditation teacher and qualified nutrition and health coach. She runs retreats and workshops in the UK and internationally, guiding clients to be happier and healthier versions of themselves. Yasmina runs weekly online yoga classes open, details can be found on her Instagram @iamyasminac
The discussion ends with a 15-minute guided meditation - so please do not listen to this section while engaging in driving, using heavy machinery or any other activity where you cannot give 100 percent of your attention to the podcast. For ease of use, the guided meditation is also available as a stand-alone mini podcast.
Yasmina and James' recommended mindfulness appsInsight Timer - Free resource with lots of guided meditations, but can also be used as a timer
Calm and Headspace - guided meditations with free trials. Both really great for those new to meditation
Cleveland Clinic Stress Free Now - great meditation app from respected US institution
If you would like to listen to the meditation only from Gentle On My Mind, it can be found in this bonus edition of The Nutrition Lab. Please bear in mind, this was recorded at the end of a discussion, hence some references are made to things previously said. This does not affect your ability to listen and use the meditation however.
