This Week's Show Archives - Mind Body Spirit Living

At some point in the course of our careers, many of us contemplate or even fantasize about what it would be like to completely change the path that we have been following. Though we may have years of training and experience invested into a particular job, company or industry, we can begin to consider if we might be more fulfilled listening to a voice that is telling us to take a leap and pursue something seemingly unrelated. The fear and uncertainty that inevitably come with this kind of decision often hold us back, but this week, our guest will share how she pushed through her doubts and fears to make a complete career transition after decades as an accomplished attorney.

Anne Reed became CEO of the Wisconsin Humane Society in January of 2010, after almost three decades as a business litigator at the Milwaukee law firm of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren SC.

At the Wisconsin Humane Society, Anne stepped into the leadership of Wisconsin’s oldest and largest animal welfare organization. Since 1879, WHS has been saving the lives of animals in need, and carrying out its mission to build a community where people value animals and treat them with respect and kindness. WHS helped to pioneer the idea that every animal available for adoption in a shelter could be free of time limits, taking as long as needed to be adopted. WHS operates shelters in Milwaukee, Saukville and Racine, and a new spay/neuter clinic for the public in West Allis.

Anne serves on the board of directors of the Shelter Animals Count, a national database initiative. She was named to the Milwaukee Business Journal’s “Women of Influence” list in 2015. As a lawyer, she was named one of the Wisconsin Law Journal’s “Women In The Law;” was named to the list of “Wisconsin Superlawyers,” and authored a law blog which was twice named one of the 100 best in the country by the American Bar Association’s ABA Journal.

Anne received her Bachelor’s Degree in English from Northwestern University, and received her Law Degree from Cornell.

This Week's Show Archives - Mind Body Spirit Living

When faced with unexpected challenges in life, the way we respond and the choices we make can determine the impact is has on the rest of our life. When courage and determination are key parts of the solution, the outcomes can lead to inspiring resilience in those it touches. This week we speak with Inky Johnson, who chose to devote himself to conquering the obstacles put in his path after a career-ending injury in a college football game while at the University of Tennessee. Join us for his story, and by his ability to overcome a childhood of poverty and violence to be someone who inspires others.

Inky Johnson is a former University of Tennessee football player who grew up living in his grandparents’ two-bedroom house with 13 other family members. He slept on a pallet on the living room floor, in a neighborhood surrounded by drugs and violence in Kirkwood, Georgia. He and his family moved five times in nine years, all within Kirkwood. Stability was non-existent.

His success on the field led to the expectation that he would be drafted to the NFL in the first round, until he had a career-ending injury on a game tackle in the final minutes of a game on September 9, 2006. The hit caused nerve damage in Johnson’s right shoulder and ended his playing career. Dr. Russ Betcher, team doctor at the time, discovered on the field that Johnson’s eyelid was drooping, a sign of nerve damage called Horner’s syndrome. Spotting the symptom allowed doctors at UT Medical Center to stop internal bleeding and ultimately save Johnson’s life.

Since a routine tackle turned into a life-threatening injury, nothing has been normal for Inky. Not with a paralyzed right arm. Not with daily pain. Not with constant physical challenges. His dream had always been to play professional sports. You might think his injury would have destroyed his motivation and crushed his spirit. But instead Inky looks in the face of defeat and says, “Am I really failing, or is God prevailing?” You’ll be inspired by his relentless determination, which he loves to impart to others through his dramatic story. Through his walk and his talk, Inky embodies and imparts a truly inspirational message.

Inky has a master’s degree in sports psychology from the University of Tennessee. He devotes much of his time to mentoring athletes and underprivileged youth. He and his amazing wife Allison live in Atlanta, Georgia with their beautiful children, Jada and Inky Jr.

Inky lives in Atlanta, Georgia and is a devout Christian. He now works as an inspirational speaker. Learn more about Inky at http://www.inkyjohnson.com/

There are many dimensions to being “healthy”, and committing to prioritizing aspects of our health is often part of the beginning of a new year. Though each individual plan will differ, there are some universal habits that, when incorporated into a regular routine, can contribute to overall health. What are these habits that we should be claiming as part of our “habit refresh”? Our guest this week is a Chiropractor who takes a holistic view of the health of his patients, and focuses on all the ways to help them make small changes that can bring more focus to their health and wellness. Tune in as we get inspired to bring new habits into our lives in the new year!

Dr. Scott Sheriff was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin. After living for a time in Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Chicago, he returned to Racine to be closer to his family. On sunny afternoons, you might find him running the paths along the lakefront, walking his dog, local parks or hanging out with friends at almost any coffee shop.

Dr. Sheriff is an active member of the Racine community. He volunteers his time and serves on several committees at the HOPES Center, an organization that works diligently to help mentally ill and homeless people get back on their feet.

Dr. Sheriff studied biology and chemistry at UW-Parkside, graduating with a Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology in 1998. He then worked at UCLA studying prostate cancer and at the Medical College of Wisconsin studying the herpes virus.

In 2003, Dr. Sheriff witnessed the profound effect that chiropractic care had on the healing of a close friend after an automobile accident. He realized that his true calling was to work one-on-one with people – naturally and safely – to help their bodies heal from pain. So, he enrolled in the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, IL. He earned his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2007. Since that time, he has pursued further education in nutrition, functional rehabilitation, working with athletes and biomechanics of the foot.

We begin a new series of discussions this week, focusing on refreshing our perspective on some of the habits that are a part of our daily life that might be getting in the way of the overall health of our mind, body and spirit. Once we bring awareness to some of those habits, we have the opportunity to make a change and replace those habits with new ones that can lead us to more balance and joy.

Join us as we dig deep into 2017 as our guests highlight their recommendations for what habits we should look at rejecting in our lives, and what we should instead look to embrace in order to lead a happier, healthier life.

As we look closer at habits that might benefit from a refresh, our communication habits are a great place to start. Is your written communications style current, and will it represent you in a way that enhances your reputation? Or are there details you might have become less diligent about, that are worth adding to your refreshed habits? From spelling to punctuation, and finding your authentic voice, we can all benefit from a closer look at what we need to know now about keeping our communication habits current.

This week we are joined by a seasoned communications professional who will share her thoughts on the habits we should ditch, and those we should consider embracing to improve how our communications reflect us, as individuals and professionals.

Gina Huck Siegert is a marketing and communications professional with extensive experience in publishing, marketing, copywriting, and sales. Stories of War and Peace with David Sanchez - 1-21-17 - Mind Body Spirit Living

As we head into the new year of 2017, we face the challenge of a country divided by contentious elections on the local, state and national level. Though the United States has faced times of internal challenge throughout its history, each generation faces it with belief in the hope for unity. For guidance, we can look to other countries that have come through times of national conflict and even war, with a plan for resolution and peace that respects the voices of all those deeply invested in the conflict.

What can we learn from how other countries have come through times of war, to create an environment of peace and respect? This week we speak with a guest who has traveled the world speaking with some of the key voices of peacemaking in war-torn countries like Bosnia, Israel, and Africa. How can we have a mindset of cooperation and a perspective of peace as we work to heal the country for all?

David Sanchez graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2014 with a degree in Political Science. At Vanderbilt, David was an Ingram Scholar and was named a 2014 Michael B. Keegan Traveling Fellow. The goal of the fellowship is to develop future leaders through world travel and experiential learning. Graduating seniors awarded the fellowship have the opportunity to pursue an idea or an issue they are passionate about in the context of daily life in communities around the world. David developed an interest in conflict resolution while studying in Copenhagen, Denmark, and trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Germany. The focus of his fellowship year was to travel to 18 communities on six continents for a project, “The Peace-Conflict Continuum: Investigating the Origins of Conflict and Identifying Best Practices for Promoting Harmony.” His goal was to examine why some countries embrace multiculturalism while others see it as a source of conflict. He seeks to understand what factors are influential in inciting conflict, where the tipping point is and what mechanisms could be implemented to defuse ethnic and religious tensions. He is especially interested in the role of governments in adopting preventive measures to reduce clashes and foster harmony between groups.

David currently works at Google in Mountain View, California.

Rethinking Family Stories with Barry Krost - 12-24-16 - Mind Body Spirit Living

We all grow up hearing and telling the stories of our family’s history and traditions. Those stories can carry on legacies that can be helpful to future generations, but also can perpetuate stories based in pain and misunderstanding. Often the stories leave out the deeper truths about what happened allowing old patterns to be repeated in each generation. Siblings raised in the same household can have very different experiences of the same events, creating confusion and distortion that can fuel challenging emotions as the stories get repeated over and over. Siblings often get entangled in their parent’s marriage, creating conflicts that do not belong to them. How do we live with and reconcile the stories we hear from and about our family, how do we find our proper place in the narrative, so that we can be rooted in the tradition in a healthy way?

Barry Krost has been exploring body, mind and spirit as a Bodywork & Energy Healing Practitioner since 1983. Barry has over 4000 hours of training in Massage, Bodywork, Energy Healing approaches. He is a Certified Family and Systemic Constellations Facilitator, and a Registered Instructor and Advanced Practitioner of Ortho-Bionomy®.

He began to study Family & Systemic Constellations in 2002. He integrates constellations into his hands-on-therapy, does individual and group constellation sessions and trains students interested in becoming facilitators. In all of his work he uses highly developed senses to come into deep contact with the client’s patterns of disorder to support their spontaneous movement towards resolution and truth.

Barry has a BA in Anthropology from Grinnell College and a MA in History from Northeastern Illinois University. He was also a certified Social Studies Teacher for grades 6-12 in the Chicago area. He is trained in Tai Chi Chuan (Wu and Yang), Chi Gong, improvisational theater, Transcendental Meditation, the Art of Living breathing techniques, Iyengar Yoga, transpersonal psychology and Hanna’s Somatics.

The relationships with those we are most intimately linked can have some of the powerful highs and lows of emotions. When we experience these strong feelings, it can lead us to create stories that we think can explain, justify, or rationalize another’s thoughts or behaviors. But these stories we tell ourselves can also exaggerate untruths about another, and only make challenging circumstances and mis-communications worse! How can we learn to be more aware of our tendency to create untrue or misleading stories that harm our relationships? Our guest this week shares her best advice from her many years as a licensed marriage and family therapist.

Mary Steege is a licensed marriage and family therapist, a certified Internal Family Systems therapist, and a pastor in the Presbyterian Church, USA. You Are Infinitely Creative with Denise Zingg – 11-12-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living

As human beings we are the essence of creativity, with each moment of each day holding the potential for a poem, a song, or a fascinating doodle to spring forth. Too often we misunderstand the true depth of our creativity, and tell ourselves a story that we are not capable of being creative, in our thinking or in any art form. This story can keep us from trying new forms of expression, and really exploring the unique thought patterns within us. We’ve limited ourselves and what we have to bring to the world by denying our creativity.

This week we speak with an artist and musician who teaches others how to embrace their creativity without fear, and to quiet that limiting story we tell ourselves. Tune in for her insights on how to find joy in our infinitely creative selves.

Our guest this week is artist Denise Zingg. In 1980 Denise founded the Spectrum Gallery in Racine, WI, and today serves as the director of the Spectrum School of the Arts and Community Gallery. Spectrum’s educational philosophy is to provide effective individualized instruction to students of all ages by understanding each person’s learning style, abilities and goals facilitated by small classes (between 4 and 10 students per class).

In addition to teaching art and music as a portal to individual consciousness and creativity, Denise also teaches Astrology, Tarot and Mandala workshops.

Many times we find ourselves affected by the behavior of people around us…they irritate or annoy us and we find it hard to ignore these feelings. In order to justify or rationalize our discomfort in these situations, we create stories about them and the individual’s motivations and intentions. These stories that we tell ourselves about others actually say more about us than them. By projecting these stories onto others, we avoid looking at the parts of ourselves that we might be trying to avoid.

This week we are joined by a Jungian psychoanalyst who will help us understand all the ways that we project parts of ourselves onto others through stories, and how this keeps us from owning our own feelings.

Amy Champeau, MSMFT, LMFT, is a Jungian psychoanalyst, licensed marriage and family therapist and somatic psychotherapist located in Tucson, Arizona. She is a graduate of Northwestern University, The Family Institute of Chicago, and the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Her work is informed by her life journey; her long-time meditation practice; the wisdom traditions of Zen and mystical Judaism; the creative arts; the Point Zero creativity process of Michelle Cassou; and her training in Integral Bodywork®. She is also a certified EMDR® practitioner; a certified TRE® provider, a certified practitioner in Integral Bodywork® and the founder of Moment-to-Moment Painting, a process of self-exploration and creative expression. Amy is the mother of two adult children and has 5 grandchildren. She has practiced Zen meditation for 30 years.

Amy has expertise in a wide range of practices which utilize the body as a gateway for personal growth and transformation. Amy’s personal experiences of these modalities and her witnessing of the changes in others who do this work have transformed her psychotherapeutic practice. Her work blends Jungian analysis with somatic psychotherapy, bodywork and creative expression to create a unique modality that moves beyond ‘talk therapy’. Amy’s work has been described as a ‘blend of practicality and spirituality’. In addition to bringing warmth, empathy and a non-judgmental attitude to her work, Amy is also an active participant in teaching her clients tools and practices that lead to real and lasting change in body/mind/spirit. Amy is a frequent presenter on the topic of the body as a gateway to transformation. She enjoys providing consultation to other mental health professionals who desire to incorporate more of a body-oriented approach into their work.

It’s OK to Not Be OK with Markus Kasunich – 10-29-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living

How many times have you asked someone “Are you OK?”. We’ve all done it. We want to know the person is doing well, and has life under control. Most of us respond to that question with an automatic “Yes, I’m OK”. We’ve told ourselves a story that our goal should be to be OK, comfortable, and satisfied in our life. But it’s not always possible to say that things are “OK”. Events and circumstances can put us in situations where we are not “OK”, and where we are challenged to navigate emotions and discomfort that is unfamiliar. There is growth available to us in these moments if we can learn to be “OK with not being OK”, and to avoid telling ourselves that this is not the way the story should look.

This week guest Markus Kasunich will share his perspective on the opportunities that arise in the moments when we are not OK, and when we are not comfortable. He will help us to see that “not being OK” is actually a normal and natural place to be, if we choose to embrace it.

Markus Kasunich is Holistic Life & Consciousness Coach, Spiritual teacher, Healer, and Professional Speaker whose key focus is helping clients reveal the unlimited potential of their True Self. He offers private sessions, online coaching, and facilitates retreats, events and classes all over the globe.

You DO Deserve a Wonderful Life with Sammy Rangel – 10-22-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living

When you were young, what did you imagine your life would be like when you grew older? You might have had images and expectations of a family, a home, a fulfilling career, or many of the other trappings of what most would consider a rich, wonderful life. But sometimes perceived wrongdoings in our past, or a low sense of self worth can make us believe a story that we don’t deserve to have a rich, wonderful life. Or maybe those around us have led us to believe that we are not qualified or worthy to fulfill our dreams. This story that we tell ourselves about what we “deserve” in life can be a roadblock to achieving our own potential and keep us from seeing our life unfold in ways that would fill us with joy and satisfaction. How can we change the story in our heads so that we truly believe we deserve to live a wonderful life?

Joining us this week is one of our most popular guests, who has overcome his own challenging past to help inspire and coach others to truly believe that they too deserve good things in their life, for themselves and their family.

Sammy Rangel was born into abuse, and spent most of his early years in mental institutions, foster homes, and detention homes. He embraced violence at the age of 11, joining the Maniac Latin Disciples gang and spending long periods in prison. It wasn’t until a drug abuse program helped him rehabilitate that Sammy began to further his education and start working for a Safe Streets Outreach Program in Wisconsin. Today, he serves on the board of the organization Life After Hate and consults with law enforcement on addressing and curtailing gang behavior. Sammy is the author of the autobiography FOURBEARS: The Myths of Forgiveness.

In 2004 Sammy graduated from Gateway Technical College-Racine and from Carthage College with a Bachelors of Social Work Degree with a minor in Psychology, Cum Laude. In 2009 Sammy graduated with a Master of Social Work Degree, Summa Cum Laude, with a mental health focus, from Loyola University-Chicago.

Sammy currently serves as the Senior Director for Program Management and Development for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Wisconsin. He previously served as the Programs Director for the Re-Entry Division of Racine Vocational Ministry.

Sammy has also worked at the Racine County Jail as a Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor helping men and women with addictive and criminal lifestyles. Sammy contributes to the community by sitting on various committees that address race, homelessness, crime, gang activity or drug abuse issues among our youth and adults. He is also the founder of Formers Anonymous, an organization with a mission to help people move beyond their addiction to street life.

Sammy is an in-demand speaker and has spoken about his story to audiences around the world. In May 2015, he appeared on stage at the TedX Conference in Budapest speaking on “The Power of Forgiveness”. Sammy’s presentation is available on You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOzJO6HRIuA&feature=youtu.be.

Sammy has been a guest on our show before and we are honored to welcome him back to inspire our listeners.

New Perspectives on Pain with Rey Allen – 6-18-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living

At some point in our lives, we all have experienced some type of pain. Physical and emotional pain can create discomfort and distraction in our daily lives, and sometimes lead to us limit the activities in which we become involved. New research indicates that pain has many components, including our expectations, emotions and environment, and that all of it needs to be addressed when striving for the best outcomes in addressing acute and chronic pain. Whether you are someone you love is affected by pain, join us for our discussion to understand how this new thinking can affect your perspective on pain.

Our Guest, Rey Allen, graduated from The European Rolfing Association in Munich, Germany in 2002 and became a Certified Advanced Rolfer in 2009. For over 20 years, Rey has been dedicated to advancing his skills in areas of specialty like biomechanics, visceral manipulation, and nerve manipulation.

Over six years ago, Rey began to investigate the field of pain science and it dramatically changed his focus and perspective. Doing extensive reading and research on neuroscience and neurophysiology, Rey has come to better understand the cause of many common pain complaints, and that they cannot be solely explained by biomechanics, structure, and/or posture. A new, more plausible explanation has emerged from scientific evidence for how manual and movement therapies lessen chronic tension and pain, creating room for more individual expression.

Rey now works from the explanatory model known as DermoNeuroModulating (DNM). DNM incorporates the most up-to-date scientific evidence from numerous fields (neuroscience, pain science, biology, physiology, and more) and therapeutic observations to most accurately explain why and how tissue change occurs. These insights provide more options for providing greater treatment outcome. Rey also teaches the DNM model to fellow rolfing practitioners.

Rey’s work has been the focus of articles in the New York Times and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Rey will be joining us from his office in New York City.

You can learn more about Rey and rolfing at www.rolfingnewyork.com.

Re-Thinking Your Purpose with Sammy Rangel – 4-9-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living

The journey we embark on in the early part of our lives is heavily influenced by our family circumstances, environment, and cultural influences. The path that we initially take often must be re-considered when we enter a new stage of life, and realize that what we thought was working in our life is no longer working.

This is particularly true in situations defined by difficult circumstances such as a life of abuse, crime, or addiction. When the circumstances that created our path are no longer available, or no longer an option, how do we re-think what our purpose is, and find a new definition of our life’s calling? This week we are joined by a guest who has not only personally navigated his own journey of re-thinking his purpose, but now helps others re-think theirs as well.

Sammy Rangel was born into abuse, and spent most of his early years in mental institutions, foster homes, and detention homes. He embraced violence at the age of 11, joining the Maniac Latin Disciples gang and spending long periods in prison. It wasn’t until a drug abuse program helped him rehabilitate that Sammy began to further his education and start working for a Safe Streets Outreach Program in Wisconsin.Today, he writes articles for Life After Hate and consults with law enforcement on addressing and curtailing gang behavior.

Loving and Caring for Yourself and Your Body with Cydney Peterson – 1-23-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living

In a recent study on New Year’s resolutions by Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America, it was found that 44% of respondents said their top focus for 2016 would be on health and wellness. In the pursuit of these resolutions and goals, we sometimes can set unrealistic expectations, or become so single-minded that we don’t establish sustainable routines. What does it take to have a balanced approach to health and wellness? And how do we make sure we are kind to ourselves in the pursuit of our ideal health and wellness goals? This week we speak about the best way to make sure we love ourselves and our bodies as we set out to establish healthy routines.

Cydney Peterson grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and graduated with honors from high school and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. After earning a BA in both Biology and Studio Art, Cydney worked professionally as a Zookeeper at the Houston Zoo in Houston, Texas and subsequently as an Animal Care Specialist and Animal Behavior Management Coordinator for the Racine Zoo in Racine, Wisconsin.

Although she loved her work with animals, Cydney was privately struggling with a troubled relationship to food, weight, and body image. She had always felt intense pressure to succeed and navigated the challenges of life through the eyes of having to “do it right.” To maintain control when life felt out of control, Cydney learned to use food and exercise as a way to manipulate her surroundings and appearance.

In what seemed to be a last ditch attempt to lose weight through an online vegan diet and exercise program, Cydney experienced a sudden shift in awareness, and found the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. She is current immersed in learning techniques, philosophies, and strategies with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating to achieve the designation of Eating Psychology Coach in May, 2016.

This week we begin a new series of shows called “Learn From The Experts”. We’ll hear from guests who have a specific skill that they have mastered, and they’ll be here to give us their insights and make us all just a little smarter….a little more well-rounded, a little more well-prepared.

We’ll start with a topic that most of us would admit we’d like to know just enough about to be dangerous, and that is wine. For those of you who like to have an occasional glass of wine with a special dinner, or who are looking to buy wine to take as a hostess gift at the holidays, a little bit of knowledge can go a long way. We’re fortunate today to have as our guest a sommelier who is here to tell us how we can be just a little more wise about wines.

Cory Sebastian has not only grown up in the restaurant business, but has over 15 years of fine dining experience. In addition to her time in restaurants, she spent four years studying and preparing for the exam that in September of 2011 entered Cory into the Guild Of Sommeliers by the Master Court of Sommeliers. Since then, she has had the opportunity to write, teach and train others about wine in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Just in the last 10 years, Cory has had the opportunity to taste over 1,000 wines from all over the world, and estimates that in total she has tasted close to 2000 wines. She has been managing Sebastians Restaurant in Caledonia, WI for nearly six years. During this time she has been working on continually evolving the Sebastians wine program, which consists of over 150 wine selections.

What We Can Learn from Animals with Cydney Peterson – 9-26-15 | Mind Body Spirit Living

As we explore the ways that we can learn about ourselves from others, we also must consider the non-human energies that are present in our life that can also teach us. Pets in our home help us learn about patience and compassion, but what else can our pets and other animals teach us about life and ourselves? This week we speak with a person who has devoted her life to understanding and connecting with animals, and she’ll share with us how we too can learn more for the animals in our life.

Cydney Peterson was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and has spent a lifetime building relationships with animals. She has always felt a special connection with them. She views the human-animal relationship as a gift and that it is humanity’s responsibility to care for Mother Nature’s creatures with kindness and love.

During her studies in biology and studio art at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, Cydney began exploring animal care and behavior. She completed a general internship at Irvine Park in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, then a specialized internship in primate care at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, IL. In 2003, she began working as a zookeeper at the Houston Zoo in Houston, TX. In 2005 she then moved to Racine, Wisconsin where she worked as the Primary Rhino Care Specialist and Behavior Management Coordinator.

Cydney believes in positive reinforcement training to shape animal behavior and has attained exceptional results using this technique among a broad-spectrum of species. She has successfully built trusting relationships with dogs, zebras, capybaras, giraffes, tapirs, orangutans, wolves, fennec fox, bears, large cats, and rhinoceros, among many other species. Most notably, Cydney taught the black rhinos at the Racine Zoo to participate in unrestrained, non-sedated blood draws, a wide variety of husbandry behaviors, and painting with their prehensile lip.

Through her studies with the Karen Pryor Academy of Animal Training and Behavior, Cydney has developed additional insight into shaping animal behavior and clarified her understanding of canine communication. This has enhanced her relationship with her own dogs and helped her to communicate these techniques with pet owners. She believes that a clear understanding of animal body language and communication is essential for a successful training program with any species; and that building trust with the animal promotes a harmonious human-animal relationship.

Cydney’s current endeavors include dog training, dog walking, and pet sitting. She enjoys continuously cultivating her knowledge of behavior and motivation and will be adding to that knowledge base by exploring the world of human psychology and behavior; studying people’s relationships with food, body image and self fulfillment through the Institute for the Psychology of Eating.

Cydney currently lives in Mount Pleasant with her husband, Adam, and two dogs, Cooper and Roscoe.

We continue our discussion about what we can learn from others, but this week on the other end of the life stage scale…..we explore what we can learn from senior citizens. Our senior citizens hold so much information, wisdom and stories from their own life experiences, but it can sometimes require extra compassion and patience to receive those insights. This week we speak with someone who has spent her career following her life calling serving senior citizens, and she will share her thoughts on how we can explore these rich insights and what awaits us if we are open to learning from the elderly people in our lives.

Wendy Putzi was born in Milwaukee and raised as a country girl on a hobby farm, embracing the calm, serene beauty of nature and animals. Her first job was as a nursing assistant in a skilled nursing home and she found deep connecting in caring for others, especially senior citizens. After much consideration, she felt a calling to be a nurse. She attended Columbia School of Nursing, in a program that included lots of opportunity for hands-on training and now has over 30 years of geriatric nursing experience.

Wendy’s life work has been centered around working with senior citizens, from working as a floor nurse, nursing supervisor, medicare nurse, MDS coordinator, and assistant director of nursing, all in a skilled nursing facility. She was a leader in opening a Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF), an assisted living facility from the ground up, and now is Director of Nursing at Hart Park Square, a residential care apartment complex and assisted living facility in Wauwatosa, WI. Here, Wendy has found her niche.

Wendy has extended her studies into Healing Touch and Reiki energy work, as well as being a holistic health practitioner, and incorporates this into her work when caring for residents.

“I am filled with deep gratitude for the residents that have been brought into my life to serve, and the amazingly beautiful gifts that they ultimately provided me.” – Wendy Putzi

We talk often on the Mind Body Spirit Living show about how we can get to know ourselves better.  This week we begin a series of shows that explore how we can learn more about ourselves…….from others.  We start by speaking with someone who does what many people would find to be nearly impossible, but that she learns and grows from it every day.

As the Head of the Middle School at The Prairie School, Bonnie Benes does what many people would find incredibly challenging, spending her days with teenagers in grades 5-8.  Each day she negotiates teen hormones, angst and drama, and all the while finds herself energized and even learning about herself in a way that no other job could.  Join us to hear Bonnie’s thoughts on what we can learn about ourselves….from teenagers.

Bonnie Benes was born in the small town of Berlin, Wisconsin and was raised by parents who were educators.  She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received her B.S. in Physical Education with a concentration in athletic training.  After a relocation to Racine, WI, she landed at The Prairie School.  Five years later, she returned to school to receive her M.S. in Educational Administrative Leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1998, she became Head of the Middle School at Prairie.

While fully immersed in her teaching career, she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in 1993.  She completed  her treatment regimen while continuing to work full time.  In the Spring of 2000, her breast cancer returned and Bonnie balanced her treatment schedule and work schedule to insure a smooth continuation of the school year, and returned full time to school for the beginning of the school year in the Fall of 2000.

Bonnie is an avid Wisconsin Badger fan and a mentor and inspiration to generations of parents and students.

Change is challenging for anyone, but relocating from one side of the country to another is a lot of change, and to move from the traditional culture of India to America is especially significant.  As we wrap up our series of shows on journeys, we have a discussion with someone who made this physical and emotional journey, and find out what lessons came along with this significant life shift.

Sharadha Natraj was born in Calcutta, India. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in German from Bombay University, with the intention of becoming a translator for technical documents in German and Japanese. Her plans abruptly changed when she moved to the Midwestern US in 1985, shortly after her wedding.  Once in the US, Shardha received a graduate degree in Library Studies from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

She has been a librarian since 1988, and has worked in research and public libraries, notably the Holocaust Memorial Center Library in West Bloomfield, Michigan and the Wauwatosa Public Library. She currently works at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning, where she is the Director of the Resource Center, provides guidance to students with research and job searches, and is the Executive Assistant to the Dean.

Sharadha loves to cook, bake, read, connect with her two adult sons, and spend time with friends.
