Brian Campbell won for the second time this season on the PGA TOUR, and in both instances had to work overtime for it. On Sunday at the John Deere Classic, he held off Emiliano Grillo with a two-putt par on the first sudden death playoff hole..
Campbell’s performance this week is proof of several things. His maiden victory was no fluke; he’s a master at winning in sudden-death, and magic continues to happen when the pros compete on TPC Deere Run
Each would finish regulation play at 18-under, and on the first extra hole, a two-putt par putt was all the former University of Illinois standout would need. Grillo hit his approach over the green, his chip from the rough came up short, and he two-putted for bogey.
“I played well. That's all I can do,” Grillo said. “Yeah, it is what it is. I got myself there. I gave myself a chance. You know, I made some good putts. Hit a good putt on the 72nd and that's all I can do,” Grillo said.
Five months ago, Campbell captured the Mexico Open in a playoff over long-hitting Aldrich Potgieter, a winner last week in Detroit. Campbell is the shortest driver on TOUR, averaging 276 yards from the tee box.
“It just goes to show that there’s so many different games out here and so many different ways to play the game,” Campbell said. “There is not one way to get it done, and that was something that I proved to myself earlier this season, and it's paid off.”
Campbell’s ten-year career began with a sponsor exemption in this event and has been a testament to perseverance. He lost his playing status in 2017, regaining his card in 2023, and battled injuries and illness along the way.
“It means everything. This is what we -- I've worked my entire life to be in this position, and unfortunately, we had a couple years there where it wasn't looking so good,” said Campbell, who graduated from the Korn Ferry Tour. “You have to start thinking about am I going do something else. Maybe pro golf or this route is not going to work out.”
He becomes the sixth multiple winner on TOUR this season joining Rory McIlroy, who has won three times, while Scottie Scheffler, Ryan Fox, Ben Griffin, and 2023 John Deere champion Sepp Straka have each won twice.
Campbell’s performance this week is proof of several things. His maiden victory was no fluke; he’s a master at winning in sudden-death, and magic continues to happen when the pros compete on TPC Deere Run. A premise Campbell fully agreed with.
“Magic does happen at the John Deere. Man, I just can't think of all the shots. I mean, Spieth's hole-out from the bunker (2013), Stricker's impossible 4-iron from the bunker to win for his third time (2009-2011). I played with Zach Johnson Thursday and Friday, and it was awesome to talk about some of his shots he's had here. What a great guy,” Campbell said. “So thrilled to be here. They put on such an amazing tournament.”
With the victory, the California native and South Carolina resident moved up from 59th to 28th in the FedEx Cup standings and is a lock for the playoffs, which begin in five weeks. He also cashes a first-place check of $1.5 million.

The sounds from Miami and Super Bowl XXiX, January 29th, 1995 with NBC's George McNeilly
Watching Deion Sanders coach football has been a treat, and to an entirely new generation, his playing days might seem like ancient history. As someone who covered him in college and in his Super Bowl appearances for both San Francisco and Dallas, it's been amazing to see his evolution. I later worked closely with him when he hosted The New American Sportsman on ESPN and he was always a pro's pro.
Recently, I came across a gem of a show featuring the marvelous play-by-play game calling of one of my mentors, Tony Roberts, who recently passed away. We worked together for Mutual and later Westwood One Networks. The show also includes some 'Prime Time' comments from an interview I did with Deion from Miami before the Big Game. It's incredible how much life has changed since then, but it's always great to look back and remember the legends.

Most people these days know my firm and I for strategic alliances and integrated marketing communications. I also get to teach business at a great university after a corporate executive career with TWDC/ESPN. Fact is, it all began in a local radio studio while still in high school and a decade as a network broadcaster covering Olympics, Super Bowls, Major Golf, Heavyweight Championship Boxing, World Series and Major College Football and Basketball. I recently came across a few digitally remastered NCAA highlights including a one-on-one interview with the legendary John Chaney, then head coach of the Temple University Owls. I’ve been told some of my students have appreciated when I shared these memories, so here goes.
Cowboys and Niners win Super Bowls, and I got to tell their stories to a nationwide radio audience. In all, I've been to 17 Super Bowls, 11 as a network broadcaster and 6 as an ESPN executive.

In a year where it seemed that more news came from off the court, field and ice, we take listen to the sounds that made 1994 a most memorable year in sports.
A look back on all the excitement that was 1996, The Year in Sports. Am still searching for an interview we did with Tom Seaver upon his induction into Cooperstown and came across a sales demo we produced during my time with Westwood One. Here's some background for those who don’t follow media closely. In the late 80’s, then a mostly music driven programming distributor, WW1 acquired the venerable Mutual Radio Network, longtime home of Notre Dame Football as well as radio talk shows hosted by Larry King and Jim Bohannon. Soon after being signed by NBC to broadcast from my first Summer Olympics, WW1 would acquire the iconic NBC Radio Network, relocate it from New York to the suburbs of Washington, DC and in doing so create the world’s leading radio sports portfolio of platforms. I really enjoyed starting my career there and thought I’d take you behind the scenes to hear how great it was. If you listen closely, you will hear me doing some live coverage from the Olympics, Super Bowl and Daytona 500 among others before moving on to an executive role with ESPN.

Today on Sports Business Update we discuss partnership activation in sports. With so much emphasis on our new normal with the pandemic including no fans at events, teams and players working in a so-called bubble and revenues lost, we thought it would be interesting to speak to a leader in minor league baseball. Our guest is Sarah Leo, Director of Partnership Activation for the Macon Bacon on the Coastal Plain League.
The following is taken directly from www.MaconBaconBaseball.com:
When a star baseball player graduates from high school, they have two choices in pursuing their baseball career:
1. Get drafted to play pro baseball. If they’re drafted, and sign a minor league contract, they generally play in a Short-Season A-League team for a couple of years. Then they either advance to Single-A baseball or poof, they are sent home to start a different career.
2. Play college baseball. If a player commits to play college baseball, then he cannot be drafted until after his third college season. If he is then drafted, he’ll play in Single-A or Double-A baseball. Major League Baseball scouts typically recommended to CPL teams college players they want to see more of.
In the Coastal Plain League’s 20 year history, more than 1400 players have been drafted by Major League Baseball teams. That’s about 70 players per year. The quality of play is generally regarded at Single-A level.
The much-anticipated resumption of the NBA season is set for July 30. We have not had a game since March 11 when the league went on hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Early last month, the NBA's Board of Governors approved a competitive format with no fans on site to be entirely hosted at Walt Disney World where a bubble has been created for each of the 22 teams who made the cut based on their records. The NBA is not referring to it as a bubble, but rather a campus where each team’s players are part of a 37-person entourage of essential personnel.
