Welcome to another episode of I’ll Show You Mine! This time, James is back in the driver’s seat showing Elyse a video game, and it’s 2014’s next-gen imagining of the iconic Wolfenstein series, ‘Wolfenstein: The New Order’. Wolfenstein is a WWII game where you fight Nazis, and in this iteration, main character William “BJ” Blazkowicz must join the resistance in a world where the Nazis won WWII and have been in power for over a decade.
Join us as we talk about the cinematic quality of this game, the vibes of the alt-history setting and design, and how Elyse again struggled her way through a first-person shooter with high stakes and brutal violence.

Welcome to another episode of I’ll Show You Mine! It’s April again and that means it’s time for our topsy turvy switcharoo episodes! This year, James is showing Elyse ‘Streets of Fire’ from 1984. A “Rock and Roll Fable” directed and co-written by 48 Hrs and The Warriors director Walter Hill, ‘Streets of Fire’ tells the story of Tom Cody, a rough-and-tumble tough guy who heads back to his hometown when his ex-girlfriend, rockstar Ellen Aim, is kidnapped by bad guy biker Raven Shaddock and his gang, the Bombers. The movie is often cited as an inspiration for beat-em-up arcade games of the late 80s/early 90s, which is how it ended up on James’ radar.

Welcome to a new season of I’ll Show You Mine! To kick things off we’re returning to the Rocky franchise, Elyse is showing James ‘Rocky III’ from 1982. Continuing the saga of Rocky Balboa, ‘Rocky III’ depicts Rocky at the top of his game, having lost touch with his younger, hungrier self. A challenger, Clubber Lang, is gunning for the championship, and Rocky’s trainer Mickey worries that Rocky doesn’t have what it takes to stop him.

It’s the story you know from the traditional Christmas song about little reindeer with a shiny red nose, with a little patented Rankin/Bass fantasy thrown in for good measure.
Join us as we talk about the cute characters and voices, marvel at the big swings Rankin/Bass took with their re-molding of the Rudolph story, and notice that the animation team was definitely more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed making this movie than ‘Rudolph’s Shiny New Year’ more than 10 years later.

Welcome to another episode of I’ll Show You Mine! We’re taking a bit of a break from our normally scheduled season to highlight modern Black filmmakers and game developers. Over the past few weeks, as protests against police brutality, racism and violence have spread all over the world, people are doing what they can to direct attention to anti-racism efforts and funds for the victims of racism and violence across the country. We’re just a couple of small-time podcasting nerds but we figured, the least we could do would be to turn our gaze toward some recent releases by promising Black creators, show them some love, and remind you our dear listeners to do what you can to unlearn inherent biases, speak out against racist institutions, and support Black art and culture in your communities.
This episode was a bit awkward for us, we’re a very liberal pair and have always believed in equality but we sometimes struggle with feeling like we don’t want to speak and take up room. However all the people coming out over the last few weeks to add their voices to the chorus demanding change has inspired us to join in and at the very least make it clear where we stand. Maybe we come off a little corny, but that’s okay.
The movie we’re watching in this episode is Selah and the Spades, released in 2019 and directed by Tayarisha Poe and starring Lovie Simone, Celeste O’Connor, and Jharrel Jerome.
The game we’re playing is Treachery in Beatdown City, developed by NuChallenger and released for PC and Nintendo Switch in 2020.

A bittersweet love story told in stunning visuals, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a wall-to-wall singing musical which tells the tale of Geneviève and Guy, a pair of young lovers torn apart when Guy is drafted into the Algerian War.
Join us as we get swept away by the romance, music, and color of it all, and can’t stop talking about how pretty Catherine Deneuve is.
The truth is we plan episodes ahead of time and wondered, given the current state of the country and the media landscape, if we should not release this episode and do something else instead. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a candy-coated musical that Elyse chose to show to James as a bit of a pick-me-up in the middle of a pandemic, but given the news of rampant acts of racist violence, police brutality, and protests for justice happening all over the country, we didn’t want to be silent in the face of it. We’re releasing this episode as normal, but we’re also going to be dropping a bonus episode this month, to highlight Black creators and do our small part to honor Black lives and show solidarity with those fighting for a better future.

It's time for another episode of I'll Show You Mine! This week James is showing Elyse "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX" for the Game Boy Color, released in 1998. DX is essentially a color port of the original Link's Awakening, released for the Game Boy in 1993, but a good game doesn't really need too many changes.
Join us as we dive in to this odd duck in the Zelda franchise, a handheld Zelda game that doesn't take place in Hyrule, involves none of the main characters we've come to know, and might all... be a dream? We'll get into the inspiration for this game, the meta humor of it, and James says "obtuse" a lot, because it's a good word to describe this delightfully eerie chapter in the Zelda series. Obtuse.

A Fox Animation Studios film directed by Don Bluth, "Anastasia" is a musical historical fiction about the Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov. In this version of the story, Anastasia survived the Russian Revolution and must remember who she is and find her way to Paris to reunite with the only family she has left.
Join us as we talk about "that Don Bluth feeling", the real history behind the fiction, and get a little real about how even though it is impressive in its own right, we get why Bluth animation wasn't quite as successful as Disney back in the day. Also, James discovers Boney M's "Rasputin."

Welcome to another episode of I'll Show You Mine! This week James is showing Elyse "Firewatch" for the PC, released in 2016. Probably the most recent game we've ever played, Firewatch is by developer Campo Santo and follows the story of Henry, a man trying to get away from it all by taking a summer job as a firewatch in Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming. Along the way Henry forms a relationship with fellow lookout Delilah who lives in the tower across the way, and strange things happen over the course of the summer.

This 2005 game takes place in a summer camp for psychic children and follows runaway Razputin as he tries to hone his psychic abilities and unravel the mystery of what is happening to all the campers at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp.

Welcome to a new season of I'll Show You Mine! We're kicking things off with a Disney classic, The Parent Trap from 1961. Written and directed by David Swift, this movie follows the story of two twin girls separated as babies who meet up at summer camp and scheme to trade places and get their estranged parents back together.
This movie has it all: secret twins, summer vibes, a beautiful California ranch house, shady ladies, and love triangle shenanigans. It was a movie that was embedded into Elyse's childhood and even though James has seen the 1998 Lindsay Lohan remake, it's not the same thing! Join us as we talk about this film's great one-liners, praise Maureen O'Hara's outfits, and Elyse momentarily, unforgivably, forgets Natasha Richardson's name.

This game was designed to feature the new Dual Shock controller for the PlayStation, so the controls are a little different than the typical 3-D platformers of the time. Also you're chasing time-traveling monkeys.
Join us as we talk about choosing between Nintendo and Sony back in the day, how the weirdness of this game is kind of what makes it fun, and the great Anime Wave of the late 90s and early 2000s that inspired a generation of young artists.

Darby O'Gill is a live action Disney movie about an old caretaker named Darby and his adventures with the various creatures of Irish folklore, particularly the King of the leprechauns, King Brian. Welcome to another episode of I'll Show You Mine! This week, Elyse shows James "Paris is Burning" the documentary about the gay ball scene of New York in the 1980s from 1990. This film has received a lot of praise as well as controversy over the years, but it remains a landmark of gay cinema and a historical record for the origins of drag culture and gay life for Black and Latinx youth in 80s New York.
Join us as Elyse runs absolutely buckwild talking about gender, sexuality, and identity while James is extremely straight and lost but still kind and appreciative. We talk about how the slang of ball culture has crossed over to the mainstream, the range of identities, personalities and opinions that we see on screen, and try desperately to do justice to all the layers of this movie and the community it represents.
Please be warned that the film covers the unfortunate death of one of the interviewees, Venus Xtravaganza, and we discuss it at the beginning of the second part of the show and at the end of the episode. It's very sad and may be triggering, some listeners may choose to skip it.

This week on I'll Show You Mine we're getting musical as Elyse shows James "State Fair" from 1945. The only Rodgers & Hammerstein musical written specifically for the screen, it's a good old fashioned story about the Frake family and one memorable trip to the Iowa State Fair. Join us as we talk about the movie's catchy tunes and uniquely 1940s flair, and James focuses purely on the scenes featuring Blue Boy, the Frakes' massive boar.

Welcome to I'll Show You Mine! This week, Elyse shows James the 1990 film, The Witches, based on the book by Roald Dahl. A movie burned into the brains of many a 90s youth, it's the story of a young boy and his grandmother and their unexpected quest to destroy all the witches in England while on holiday at a seaside hotel, and stop their plan to turn all the children in the country into mice.
We talk about the visceral transformations in this movie, "Cronenberg mice," the terrible changed ending, and nerd out over sweet mouse stunts. Join us, won't you?

In this episode, James recalls sleepovers past, Elyse sees an opportunity to flex her film studies muscles and takes it, and we both say "wild" a lot, because this game is very bad.

Though it didn't make big waves at the box office, the film has become something of a cult favorite within animation, and Elyse explains why she loved it so much as a kid. This week on I'll Show You Mine... Elyse shows James the South Korean crime drama, Memories of Murder. Directed by Bong Joon-ho in 2003, the movie follows the true story of Korea's first recorded serial killer in 1986. The film stars Song Kang-ho as Inspector Park Doo-man and Kim Sang-kyung as Inspector Seo Tae-yoon, two detectives with completely opposing views on how best to catch the killer. We'll talk about how this movie differs from its Hollywood counterparts by doing the unexpected, and dig into the rich visual narrative director Bong lays out for the viewer.
P.S. Just a warning, we don't get very graphic in our discussion of the film but this is a story about a series of rapes and murders which may be upsetting.

It's a funny and fun meta-journey through the creation of a film script, with a little romance thrown in for flavor.
