Mark 2:1-12
1 When he entered Capernaum again after some days, it was reported that he was at
home. 2 So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the
doorway, and he was speaking the word to them. 3 They came to him bringing a paralytic,
carried by four of them. 4 Since they were not able to bring him to Jesus because of the
crowd, they removed the roof above him, and after digging through it, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying. 5 Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Son,
your sins are forgiven.” 6 But some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts: 7 “Why does he speak like this? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 Right away Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were thinking like this within
themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 9 Which
is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your
mat, and walk’? 10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to
forgive sins”—he told the paralytic— 11 “I tell you: get up, take your mat, and go home.”
12 Immediately he got up, took the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they
were all astounded and gave glory to God, saying, “We have never seen anything like
this!”

What time will services be?
9am and 11am
Who can attend?
Every week we will invite covenant members first and then we’ll have several spots reserved every service for attenders and guests.
When can I reserve my ticket(s)?
Covenant members: You will receive an invitation by email every Monday at 12pm for the upcoming worship gathering.
Attenders and guests: Every Wednesday by 12pm we’ll post a link on the app, Facebook, and our website for you to RSVP
For everyone: We do ask that if you’re unsure you can attend that you not RSVP a ticket. Let someone else attend instead.
Can I RSVP every week?
If you worshipped at the church building the prior week, please do not RSVP for the present week until Friday morning. Give other covenant members an opportunity to attend if they were unable to get a ticket the prior week.
What if I’m unable to attend the worship gathering at the building?
For the next several months we will be live streaming the 9am worship gathering. We’ve all experienced the last several months that online church misses a lot of what we understand church to be but for now we hope it’s a helpful accommodation.
When can I arrive at the church building?
You can arrive at any point prior to the service. You can sit in your car or you can stand in the parking lot and talk to others who want to do the same.
When can I enter the building?
You will be permitted to enter the building approximately 5 minutes before the worship gathering begins. A leader will clearly notify you when you can enter.
Will I be required to wear a mask?
Yes. In an abundance of caution for others and in accordance with the guidelines from the CDC we are requiring all people older than 2 years of age to wear a mask when inside the church building.
Will hugs, handshakes, fist bumps, etc. be permitted?
Before you enter the building we’ll have a table set up with green, yellow, and red bracelets. If you’re ok with physical contact, select a green bracelet. If you don’t want physical contact but you’re ok with talking at a safe distance, select a yellow bracelet. If you’d prefer no contact and you want to be talked to from a LONG distance away, select a red bracelet.
How will seating be arranged?
In order to meet the CDCs recommendation for social distancing the room will be set up with both rows of chairs in the middle of the auditorium and tables with chairs on the edges. The tables with chairs are reserved for those who have children.
What will be available for children?
For now there will be no children’s classes but we will have a station set up for the kids to stop by so they can pick up something specifically put together for their age group to help them and their parents ☺ engage the worship gathering.
Will we be able to hang out and talk after the worship gathering?
Outside the building, yes. Directly after the worship gathering we ask that every immediately exit the building. This is for several reason including to make sure we have adequate time to clean the building afterwards even after the 11am svc.

John 9 - God in the Gulag: How Anger and Self-Righteousness Blind Us to God's Work in Suffering

Well, its Christmas, and today I have a little Christmas surprise for you.
There is no introduction to this sermon!
Today, this text in John is showing us a couple of ways that people
commonly miss the whole point of who Jesus is and what he was born to do.
So, my hope is, that God will give you something from this text today that
you’ll keep thinking about as you move through the celebration of Jesus’
birth this week.

John 4:43-54
Mahalia Jackson is one of the greatest gospel music singers of all time.
She also changed American History.
Without Mahalia Jackson, you wouldn’t know anything about an “I Have a Dream” speech. Instead, our kids would have learned about Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Bad Check” speech.
Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, does it?
Jackson was the primary force in bringing gospel music out of the church and into the popular culture. She was the first gospel singer to win a Grammy and was instrumental to the civil rights movement. She was also one of Dr. King’s best friends.
She sang at many of his rallies, her voice was the soundtrack of the civil rights movement. When Dr. King was discouraged, he would call Mahalia Jackson and ask her to sing a gospel song to him over the phone.
Dr. King had struggled to put together his speech for the March on Washington, because of time constraints. (AMEN!!!!). He was supposed to keep it to 5 minutes.
But he had 2 metaphors that he really loved that wanted to use (AMEN!!!!)…one about a bad check that had been stamped “insufficient funds” and another about having a dream.
He decided to cut the dream part and stick with the “bad check” metaphor.
Of course…he ended up using both.
Now, I just want y’all all to recognize this. One of the most enduring speeches of American History…delivered by one of the greatest preachers in American History… only exists because that preacher decided to use 2 METAPHORS and DELIBERATELY GO OVER HIS TIME by TRIPLE.
As King delivered the speech, he was following his written notes to the tee. He had mostly, to that point, called African Americans to endure suffering. To not give up…but he hadn’t yet, given a description of hope. He had named the problem. He had named how to address the problem…but He was nearing the end of what he had written down and he simply hadn’t talked about what America would be like at the end of all the suffering.
That’s when Mahalia Jackson yelled out, “Tell them about the Dream, Martin! Tell them about the Dream!”
Dr. King paused…then slid his notes over to the side of the lectern and said, “I say to you today, my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow I still have a dream!”
That’s when Clarence Jones, one of Dr. King's advisers, turned to the person next to him and said, "These people out there, they don’t know it, but they’re about ready to go to church."
And the rest was history. Literally.

This past Mother’s Day, Scott Amos, a 40-year-old husband and father of 2, was visiting his mother in California at his childhood home. While he was there, his mom asked him to go up into the attic to get a few boxes of his things that had long been packed up and put away.
As he sorted through the dusty boxes, he came across and old JCPenney bag. Inside the bag he found an unopened Nintendo Game, complete with JCPenney receipt for $38.45. It was a copy of the Greek Mythological classic- “Kid Icarus”.
Coincidentally, the date on the receipt was exactly 31 years ago today- December 8th, 1988.
Apparently, Scott’s Mom had hidden one of his 1988 Christmas presents a bit too well.
Scott tossed the game back in the box and headed home to Reno, Nevada with his family. Thinking that he might be able to sell the game online for couple of hundred bucks to a collector, he pulled it out and set it on the kitchen counter...until he had a chance to check its value.
Later that day at work, he emailed a couple of experts, one of them replied immediately, “You have an Easter Egg on your hands.” In other words, a very rare find that was going to be worth more than $200. A lot more.
He immediately called his wife and told her to get the game out of the reach of his 2 small children and into a safe location.
Turns out there are fewer than 10 sealed copies of this game in the world. And, since the game had a receipt that showed it hadn’t changed hands, it boosted the value even more.
Scott put the game up for auction, and then invited his family and friends over to his house for a viewing party on the night of the auction, where they could watch online.
The game sold for $9,000.
Scott split the money with his older sister and they took their families to Disney world.
So, parents, if you hide a Christmas gift in the attic this season and forget about it, you just might accidentally give your children a much bigger gift 30 years later.
What’s funny is, I bet back in 1988, Scott’s Mom probably got that gift for him because he asked for it. And I bet, on Christmas morning, when he opened his gifts and it wasn’t there…like all kids…he was a little bit disappointed.
You know, if Scott’s Mom suddenly remembered later that evening…or the next day…or sometime in the middle of January… “Wait a second, that game! I hid that game away and forgot to give it to you…” I bet Scott would have jumped at the chance to just crack it open right then and play it.
Because he or his Mom, or his sister, simply could not have known or predicted that what they thought was worth $38.45, could one day send the whole family to Disney World.
For the last couple of chapters in John’s Gospel, Jesus has been showing up at these sacred Jewish religious institutions and doing something that confuses people.
He went into the temple and turned over tables and then said, “Tear down the temple and I’ll raise it up in 3 days”
He talked to a Jewish Rabbi who thought Israel just needed a new teacher, and Jesus said he needed a new birth.
Today, we come to another person who is going to appeal to religious institutional beliefs…and Jesus is going to say something confusing...again.
But this person is different than those first two groups made up of society’s elites. The person Jesus will talk to in this story is on the other end of the spectrum. She embodies everything that John’s culture despised, ignored, and de-valued.
Yet, Jesus knows she is worth much more than the receipt in the bag says. And this woman is going to figure out…that she’s just found an unopened copy of “Kid Icarus” in the attic…and she’s going to Disney World.
