We pull apart current AFL playing lists, analyse the key indicators, and determine who they should resign, delist, make a play for in trade/free agency, draft, and what moves they should make in the offseason.
We're back (again). We didn't get a lot of podcasts done in 2022, but we are keen to try and podcast whenever we get the chance in 2023.
This podcast is focused on the offseason changes for all clubs, and whether they start 2023 in a better position, a similar position, or a worse position.
Fantasy footy isn't for every fan, but it should be because it's so much fun! We talk about our love our keeper draft leagues, and reveal our classic teams line by line, with an analysis of where we have passed on a high ownership alternative.

We wanted to record an episode where we could take stock of what's unfolded in the past 3 weeks, as there has been a lot of change in AFL teams, but also in our lives. We start by reflecting on the Dee's GF victory, jump into a mental health minute, before moving into a free agency moves and trades review. At the end, we take a little look at what it may take to make progress on a few of the pending trades.
We hinted at a new format for the rest of the list reviews and here is the first rendition of what that new format could be. We have broken the sides up into different groups where we can compare them against like sides, and comment on their different approaches to the same task, rebuilding. Today we focus on the Adelaide Crows, North Melbourne Kangaroos, Collingwood Magpies, and Hawthorn Hawks.

The home and away season has come to an end, and there are still a bunch of lists we haven’t reviewed. This podcast should cover off some of the key timely features of those list reviews, with a look at your clubs key out of contract players coming into the offseason. Part 1 is ADE-GWS, Part 2 (coming) is HAW-WBD.
The Cats have been holding on for years and they continue down the path of topping up with older players to keep the window ajar. They finished on top in 2019 but failed to fire in finals, finished top 4 in 2020 and made the grand final, and are set for another top 2/4 finish in 2021. The Cats are still running out of time, but in this league you need to be lucky and/or do something different to everyone else to have a chance, and Geelong are certainly doing that.
Port Adelaide are well placed for a flag tilt. Currently top 4, top 4 last year, but they need to get some mid/forwards back on the park soon to balance out a midfield that can lack hurt factor. We have a pretty clear way forward for the Power, so let’s see how they approach this off-season.
One of the best sides over the last few seasons, the Brisbane Lions have been growing steadily, are well balanced all across the park, and have added some key pieces to a premiership assault over the past 2 seasons. They are as well placed as any side, but do they have what it takes to go all the way, or are they still a brick or two short?
We often start our list reviews with cellar dwellers, or clubs that could have a big say in the offseason, so it was a refreshing change of pace to review a club who is doing so much right. There are still some areas of improvement though as the Tigers hold for more success while preparing for life after some stars.
Well, Carlton’s incoming President Luke Sayers may not have sayered that he wanted Lystics to lead the external review, but we’ve taken it upon our selves to contribute. Always a fun list to review, we take a look at what the Blues need to address in the coming months to be set up for the next 1-4 years.
This is the first episode for 2021 in our list review series. We are starting by addressing the Saints, who we missed in 2020 after they shot up the ladder on the back of radical list changes. 2021 looks like a tougher prospect for the Saints though, who continued to make sweeping changes to their list. Have they gone a step too far, or do they still have time to recover.

- the perceived increase in injuries this year and what could the multitude of causes be
- why the MRO is struggling to convince the public with some rulings, and the way forward
- a few club list strategies that seem to be falling down, and why.

This is our first episode recorded during the offseason for the offseason. This episode focuses on trade and free agency. We take a look at every club, who may be leaving and who they have been linked to, and discuss what it may take for the deals to happen in 2020.
The Bulldogs of 2020 were well hyped and ultimately delivered a similar outcome to the 2019 model. They are a club who is never afraid to spin the magnets, but with the least rucks and key position players on their list of all clubs, the Dogs setups looked strange at times. They've always been a team to punch above their weight, but it's an issue requires attention this offseason.

The Swans have done exactly what the AFL has asked of them, and developed a strong academy pathway in the non-traditional football state of NSW. This has also given the Swans access to some discounted young talents that has accelerated their rebuild, but they need to start looking taller to take the next step.

The Hawks 2020 list is exactly what a list looks like when you do everything to compete for a flag every year, no matter how your list looks compared to others. That is certainly admirable, and I don't think Hawks fans begrudge the club for trying one last time, but I think we've reached the end of the road with that mentality. The Hawks need regeneration, and they need it now. Day is only the start, they need many more like him if the Hawks are to avoid a long night.

North Melbourne have a surprisingly good youth core developing and some great older players to teach them, but they are still shackled to too many stragglers. Is it time for North to cut free and speed up the regeneration?

We (mostly Sean) have been reflecting on the hit documentary "The Last Dance", where [SPOILER ALERT] then GM Jerry Krause decides that the 97/98 NBA Season will be the last for this legendary Chicago Bulls team, with the rebuilding to start with a new coach and new players.
We want to take a chance to reflect on whether you should ever break up a premiership winning team, particularly a dynasty team like the Cats of 07-11, or the Hawks of 13-15. We'll also look at current clubs with an experienced age profile and review moves they could make in the offseason.
Footy is back! Thanks everyone for understanding while we took a break, but we are now well and truly back as the restrictions have eased. Even after we finished recording this, we couldn't stop smiling as it felt like a return to normality, and footy returning will help that too.

Hey everyone, we are going on a temporary pause to avoid veering away from the stuff we are good at. Without much to analyse and assess at the moment, we are at risk of being just another news outlet speculating. Once we have a solid idea of the way forward and something to discuss, more episodes will come.
We are almost half way though what was announced as the minimum break in the AFL season, and we thought it would be a good time to access which clubs are most likely to benefit (comparative to other teams) from the break. We also take the chance to revisit the draft age conversation.
Caro certainly lit a fire under North Melbourne staff and fans last week when she mentioned the words "relocation" and "North Melbourne" in the same breath, and while both Sean and I are believers that North should stay where they are, we thought it was a good time to look into the concept of relocation as an alternative to league expansion.

As Cal Twomey penned earlier this week, there is genuine uncertainty around this year's draft format due to the coronavirus outbreak. New microphones are online. Let us know what you think. Live trading is something that we still don't feel is analysed of scrutinised heavily enough. If some of these trades were made during the trade period, a List Manager would have to explain to the Head of Football why they want to lose their job so badly. Alas, it's not always as simple as we make it, and there is a lot more information available at the time of the trade so that must be considered.
This makes up Part 2 of the 2 Part Trade Review where we look at all of the trading that's occurred and make an assessment on the period as a whole.

It's reached our favourite time of year. Teams are changing, they've already changed a lot during the trade and free agency period, but they're about to have their biggest change, and that happens when they go to the draft (maybe except the Saints who have made massive changes already).

N.B that this isn't a power rankings of simply the best players in order, but an assessment of which players may actually go to each of the 18 clubs. What a great start to the JLT. Unless you've missed it, and everything since the end of 2018, we have some new rules. We take a look at how each of the rules has effected play so far in 2019, and discuss some of the potential strategies that we can see forming. Something significant happened this offseason that may not have immediately felt that way, and that's the creation of the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP). If you've played for an AFL club in the past, or nominated for the draft in the past and went unselected, you can now choose the club you want to play for (assuming they want you) rather than entering the draft lottery. This rule changes the game for how list managers should view the bottom third of their list, with essentially free access to the next best group of players, some who are just waiting for their chance. In this shorter episode, we take a look at the ways that it'll effect the 2019 offseason, and what your club can do to take full advantage.
It's always a talking point at this time of year, which new players at your club are likely to get up for Round 1 of the AFL Season. We've taken an in-depth look at each club, and reviewed the two most likely to debut players, focusing on players that were taken in either the draft, rookie, or SSP period.

A liquid asset is cash on hand or an asset that can be readily converted to cash. An asset that can readily be converted into cash is similar to cash itself because the asset can be sold with little impact on its value. Why do we tell you this? Because we want to investigate whether the liquidity of trade assets are a factor in trade fairness.
In this episode we look at picks, which can be moved on at will, or parked for a later draft, are more or less valuable than players during trade negotiations. We also look at whether rule changes to cash exceptions could be the key to equality at the trade table.
Player ratings systems are useful way to assess and compare a player's performance in match. Even if I haven't seen a game, I can tell who was very involved in play, and get some indication of how they were involved.
In this episode we take a look at these player rating systems for indicators of success, the relationship to the other systems, and how these systems can be used to access real player performance.

The title really says it all. With only 2 days of trading left in 2018 AFL player exchange period, it is trade time. The hashtag #getitdone will be a theme throughout, as there are a few clubs that have trades that need to go through, and the really just need to stump up and get them done in the next 2 days. We've been keeping an eye on AFL Draft prospects all year, and we've finally gathered all the data about them that we can get. No more games, no more testing, so it's time to see where they all sit. This will be our final power rankings for 2018, and we've stretched ourselves out to the top 30. We'll also look at the results from the combine, and how these results can impact a draft prospects chances.
With 2018 AFL Grand Final over, that means it is time for the most exciting time of year. Christmas has come early, it's offseason time. We'll re-review the West Coast Eagles in depth, and take an in-depth look at what winning an AFL Grand Final really means. We'll also briefly re-review the Collingwood Magpies, Melbourne Demons, Richmond Tigers, GWS Giants, Hawthorn Hawks, Sydney Swans, and Geelong Cats, to see which delistings, re-signing, retirements, free agency, trades and drafting moves they've made and may make.
The Collingwood Magpies finished 13th in 2017, and were widely tipped to finish in the bottom half again in 2018, but were able to make the AFL grand final and only fell short at the final hurdle. There was a lot to like, but we could still find a lot of ways that the Pies could improve their list through the upcoming AFL free agency period, trade weeks, and national draft.
We like to keep everyone up to date on the draft happens, and with plenty of draftees playing in finals and performing there was a lot to update you on. We review this, and access the prospect draftees on their form from July onwards, and how that might affect their draft position.
The Melbourne Demons broke a 12 year hiatus from finals in 2018, winning through to a preliminary final, injecting their youthful list with much need confidence. The Dees will look to climb the mountain again in 2019, and with finals the new minimum standard, they May need to look at some trade targets.
