When we are taking the time to think about ourselves, and we start planning the trip of our lives, we tend to buy pocket guide books about the country or place we are visiting. We do an extensive research about the culture, the food, and the places we want to explore. We read reviews, blogs, and articles found in apps or traveling platforms. We ask people we know that have previously visited such places, so we feel safe, and the traveling anxiety can be reduced because we are going to a place we have never been.

Soon there will be another opportunity for us to venture out, and this same exercise will be repeated because this is what most people recommend us to do when traveling. We will order things online, buy things in specialized shops, and upgrade our gear feeling that we are getting better at being prepared.

In the long run, you will realize that this could be a never ending cycle and all of those things you need to get are not really what make a difference when traveling, because in life there is no such thing as a perfect list, neither a big change that comes from another place but from within. In reality, instead of things there is a set of skills that can make a huge difference and perhaps can lead to a life changing moment in your journey of life.

After living in three continents, traveled to 32 countries, and visited more than 200 cities throughout the world I would like to share 7 life skills that I consider important and can make a huge difference for you and any person you will encounter while traveling abroad. So, it is not about the things you buy, but the things you bring to your journey, and how you apply such skills that open doors of opportunity, take you to places you never planned, or meet people that will forever change your life.

  1. Be a Bag of Chocolates to the Flight Crew When you are traveling, expanding your wings and projecting your inner self for new beginnings, during your trip, or at the end of your journey, the people that can definitely make your experience pleasant is the flight crew.

Just like you do at work when making business, or when you are investing in the people at human resources, present yourself as a unique chocolate in a small little bag with a friendly smile, project it to all the people that you feel from your gut that will be there making sure you have all you need to be sound and safe while flying the friendly skies. In return people will wake you up when you are asleep and not miss the food when it is being served, extra kindness and find more room for your luggage, or even an upgrade to first class!

  1. Let People Know that They are Doing a Good Job Most of the times the people that are there to serve you never get to know if they did a good job, even if you take the time to leave a review, for the most part it is going to be in a website written for the business but it will never get to go to where it is meant to be delivered, the people.

It is very easy to give a big tip because it is an action that requires a signature or to look for change in your wallet, but it takes more out of you to find the right words to be kind and grateful. The smiles, hearts, and spirits of such great humans that have been placed in your journey will be forever delighted if you take a minute of your day and recognize the great things that they are doing, so they keep doing it, and perhaps go back home and tell a story about this unique soul that happened to be kind enough to be thankful and grateful, out of the all the hundreds of people they served throughout the day.

I dare you to do all this in the language of the country you are visiting, I will be delighted to hear back from you in the comments section, I am sure people with your broken sentences will melt with your great intentions but will smile for days, and speak about you for ages.

  1. Whenever you are Eating Alone, Join a Group of strangers or Another Person Eating Alone Your journey can take a huge change if you engage in quality of conversations with people that are eating alone, or perhaps are kind enough to accept you to join their party. Often times, locals embrace these moments of courage and stop their hectic lives and will tour you around like a local for free, after sharing universes when dinning in a restaurant, a cafeteria, at a park, or by the beach. It can become a moment of great connection and can lead to a good friendship because of all the good energy that flows in that moment of true empathy and bonding.

  2. Be Water and Keep Your Balance No matter how hard your day has been, how far have you been travelling, or what happens during your trip, bear in mind that you are the one that is not working and having the privilege to be traveling. In other words, of all the people around you, you are the only one that is not dealing with life and in addition they are also there to serve you. Be thoughtful about your word, be mindful about your actions, and be respectful about people’s reactions. It is very easy to lose control at certain times, but it takes more out of you to find balance when things are not working the way they should, breath in and breathe out, and flow like water, be water where ever you go. Learning how to control your emotions and your response to certain situations is one of the biggest lessons when being out of your comfort and traveling abroad.

  3. Reach out to Strangers that You Feel in Need of some Light When you are travelling, for most of the people that you will encounter you will be a strangers to their lives, so whenever you feel like someone needs a good word of advice that comes from a place of love, don’t hold your breath, reach out and say what you believe needs to be said. At times you will simply need listen to some one that you feel that needs a set of good ears just to vent, and finish your session of compassion with a good hug. With practice you will find yourself giving the best advice that you have given, people will often give you a hug in return, or even tell you that you have been that angel that they have asked all this time to God to be sent out their way to guide them and give them light in their journey of life.

  4. Be Present in the Moment You have been running a lot but you have not arrived. You have been going to places looking for answers, pursuing goals and dreams, but you never get to enjoy the blessings that are in front of you, it is time for you to be mindful about your day and stop trying to change things about your trip, so you can find who you really are and what you really want. Live in the present time, in the now.

The past is the present that has already passed, the future is the present that is about to happen. Live in the present, it is a gift granted for you to love, be happy, and grow.

At times you will feel so connected to the place, or to the people that are around you, so before you take out your phone or your camera to take a snap, pay more attention to your feelings in that moment, to the way that the moment is developing, making you truly connected and uniquely fulfilled. Take a diary with you and make mindful notes about such moments as If they were pictures, so whenever you go back you can replicate this moments by doing events with the people that you have been given, not your friends or your family, but that group of souls that you feel connected to the core of your spirit, and you can channel the energy of those moments, finding your true calling, your true colors and essence.

  1. Smile from Within Smiling is contagious. It is a simple but powerful gesture that can help you find the most unimaginable places, company, or even help when in need. It comes from within and without pronouncing a word, means that you are in balance and in peace. We all look for happiness and when we see someone happy with oneself, we all get curious and definitely want to spend more time with that person. How about being that person?

How about being the soul that gives light, smiles, and help people shine? How about being that unique soul that instead of feeling that the world is coming to an end, you become the one that is making a difference? How about planting seeds of love and compassion where ever you go, one soul at a time. How about becoming a gift to whoever gets to find you in their day and you have shown them that there is still hope of finding genuine souls that care, even though you were in another country and all you had to give was yourself.

Remember that the 7 skills not things when traveling abroad Are 1. Be a bag of chocolates to the flight crue 2. Let the people know they are doing a great job 3. When ever you are eating alone, join a group of strangers, or another person like yourself 4. Be water and keep your balance 5. Reach out to strangers that you feel in need of some light 6. Be present in the moment 7. Smile from within

Welcome to Light2yourjourney My name is Felipe and I bring light to people's lives. A mountaineer, world traveler, and educator turned into light coach entrepreneur and in each episode I bring you an inspiring message to help you discover your inner self, purpose, and your true calling in life.

Here is my story I have lived in three continents, traveled to 32 countries, visited more than 200 cities throughout the world. I was born and raised in Colombia, lived in Egypt, and now living in the US. I come from a family of parents that came to Bogota to settle and find a stable life, coming from their cities of origin, Socorro Santander( the city of freedom fighters from Spanish settlers) and Moniquira(the city of sweets Bocadillos made from guava) in Boyaca located in the high hills of the Andes.

I am a survivor of war. I served my military service in the nineties in the times of deep conflict between Pablo Escobar, the Drug cartels, a corrupt government, and the Army Forces in Colombia. I was deployed to the Sinai Peninsula with the Multinational Force and Observers, to serve the Camp Davis peace treaty signed by Israel and Egypt, and experience the atrocities of a religious and political oriented war. I quite understood the never-ending pattern of the families that lose their loved ones, the souls that are trapped between pulling triggers, and the endless trauma caused to little kids with no parents to follow for guidance, the growing anger and images printed in peoples hearts changing realities and destinies.

I went to the university to study economics, so that we could create models that could find outcomes where everybody wins, but instead I found that all the models work with second bests and you can never really plan a model without excluding or affecting the same communities that are under privileged. The only true variable that could make a change in a model was education. Therefore, I chose to invest my days in elementary schools, inside the classrooms, following my family's legacy through education. In the history of our family there have been educators, principals, and deans all across my genes in both sides my mom and my dad. I kept working hard creating one of a kind systems to nurture a culture of excellence, supporting curriculum through rigorous instruction, high expectations, integrating technology, finding innovative ways to motivate scholars of underprivileged communities in title-1 elementary schools here in Houston Texas, particularly to those kids that cross the border without a say, following their immigrant parents looking for a better life to this country. I was Nominated and Awarded Teacher of the year 2014- 2015 in a title I school in an independent school district, Bilingual Teacher of the Year finalist by HAABE in the same year.

I made dancing, one of my passions, a habit of teaching people Colombian folklore and created the Colombian Orchid Ballet, a folkloric dancing crew full of passion dancing for social causes for 2 years and saw the power of the arts doing its magic through culture, philanthropy, and charity fundraising, like raising funds for education in Colombia in the Minuto de Dios, Houston.

After 15 years in education, I have learned more than I have been able to teach through my kids, my real teachers. My success and growth happened when I left the fear of not feeling respected and setting a line not to be crossed, instead I made it a circle of word, just like the native Indians do it in the Amazons, connecting and listening to their stories, putting myself at their level. Showing them that it is not difficult to say I am sorry, and it all begins with the adults that are in their circle of influence. Telling them stories of change and defining the odds by listening to the gut. Establishing not rules but principles, like being honey instead of vinegar, or rooting yourself strong to your truth, being an Oak tree, protecting the ones that are weak giving shade when in need. Every day starting from zero, because we were all about forgetting and forgiving. Motivating them to find their true colors and essence as key elements of our culture of excellence. Every time that I was traveling in all the countries no matter the circumstances or the type of background that people had around me, I felt that they will always listen to the messages that I genuinely felt like sharing, the moments of true connection through powerful conversations, and the way I lived with passion my life adding meaning to their journey’s while travelling. After coming back from a 27 day trip with no plan to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore and Tokyo. I chose to be the gypsy soul that I always been and found very comfortable flowing and growing while I traveling, but now I do it locally.

I engage with people, go to places full of colors and culture, and find myself surrounded with great souls that give meaning to my days by the way that we flow, following the gut, letting the universe be the guide. Now I don’t feel the need to travel to look for such souls, I feel I am on a non-stop mission, following my calling in life, and the Universe makes the magic of magnetizing souls looking for light to my journey of life.

So what do I do? I give sessions of light coaching to individuals looking for purpose and happiness.I can’t tell you how to live your life, but I can definitely help you find insights and light in your path.

I ordained myself recently with the universal life church. I am officiating wedding ceremonies for souls that are looking for love and new beginnings, planting seeds of love, unity, and compassion. Growing a forest of tall and strong trees, and bringing fruit out of that one of a kind love.

I am also taking people to go on a journey of change, traveling abroad or to the mountains to walk their walk and connect with mother earth, getting in tune with their roots, colors, and essence.

So my message for you today is to get in tuned with your inner self, find your element, find your true colors, your calling in life, make it a gift by becoming a soul of service, find happiness from within, today.
