I had the honor to sit down and speak with Filmmaker Augusta Palmer to discuss her film "The Blues Society", her journey in film and history, and her being a legacy to Blues preservation! The Blues Society is a documentary work-in-progress about the Memphis Country Blues Festivals held from 1966-1969. It's an exciting story about people from the North and South coming together to celebrate artists like Furry Lewis, Bukka White, Nathan Beauregard, Mississippi Fred McDowell, the Reverend Robert Wilkins and more!Augusta Palmer is the daughter of Memphis Country Blues Society Member Bob Palmer. She is best known for The Hand of Fatima (2009), a feature documentary about music, mysticism, and family history. Her award-winning documentary and experimental video work has screened in national and international festivals, as well as theatrical runs at venues like New York’s Anthology Film Archives. A is for Aye-Aye: An Abecedarian Adventure (2015), her fiction short has screened at film festivals from New Zealand to New York, recently receiving an award for Best Animation at the New Jersey International Film Festival. She is also an Assistant Professor of Communication Arts at St. Francis College.

Due to Friday's technical issues, this is the recording of my Facebook Live Broadcast of Gumbo Friday's with Brother Omar Brown. We discuss th eBlues People, Blues in the Bible, the current conditions of African American's and and how misconceptions of the Bible not only lead people astray, but distances African Americans from the fact that we are the descendants of the Sons and Daughters of Israel.

On my journey researching and studying my heritage, it’s connection to Blues Music and the traditions of christianity the generations of both sides of my family lived by, I’ve began to draw a conclusion tracing all the way back, that the Blues, work/prison songs and the Spirituals all stems from the Hebrew Tribes of Israel, and we (descendants of Prisoners of war known as ‘ Black Slaves” or “African Americans”) are the children of the tribes. I’d even be as specific to say The Tribe of Judah and/or Levi, the Igbo and Songhai Empire.
