Before Jesus’ ministry, we have a limited view of the Spirit of God and His work. But the prophet Ezekiel gives us a window into what will happen when the Spirit comes in power. Jesus tells us what the Spirit will accomplish upon His coming. Paul tells the Corinthians about the gifts that the Spirit brings, the Galatians about the fruit that comes as a result of His presence, and the Ephesians about the sealing that He will complete in His work. By the Spirit of God, we can be people that keep giving because of the gifts God has given to us.

Abram and Sarai make a plan to accomplish God’s promises on their own because His promises seemed too impossible. Things didn’t go well. In fact, they began mocking God’s promises. Though Job was a man of integrity, he seemed to hide behind self-righteousness during the conversations with his friends. He became accusatory of God and demanded a trial. He worships the Almighty God and will carefully correct what is wrong about what is being declared about God.

And there may be a good impulse in this. Love, after all, seeks the good of others - an inclusive pursuit!
But is there a kind of loving exclusivism?
The Biblical picture of love may surprise us. There we see that the God who is love is at once both more exclusive than us and more inclusive than us, in different ways - and this has huge implications on what being the church looks like.
In what ways is God more inclusive than we are? In what ways is he more exclusive than we are? And how inclusive and exclusive does he call us to be?

Jesus continues to speak to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3. This time he addresses the church at Thyatira. This church was growing - but was also willing to tolerate false teaching. The false teaching being proposed to the church is something that Jesus says is a huge problem that will ultimately lead people to death. He is calling the church to turn from what is false and back to what is true - Him.

Though the church had not denied Jesus, there were two great dangers: sex & idols. Though sex can be an idol in itself, idols are meant to draw away from worshiping Jesus. This is what Satan desires for all people - is that we turn to worship anything but Jesus, and hold teaching that says it's OK to compromise. Yet Jesus has purchased repentance for His people. Even where Satan dwells, we can turn to Christ.

Jesus writes letters to seven local churches in the first century. The second letter was addressed to the church in Smyrna. In this city, it was impossible to be follower of Jesus and an intricate part of the society as the emperor worship was built into everything that happened in the city. The followers of Jesus were all experiencing incredible hardship, with some leading to imprisonment and death. Jesus writes them a message that does not promise immediate deliverance, but one of everlasting hope - a confident expectation that can not be removed.

How are we supposed to understand it if one of the authors says that it’s hard? There are some hermeneutical and exegetical principles that you can use to understand almost all of Scripture.
