Mothers and fathers get this thumb injury from picking up their babies... Gamers from their controllers... Cell phone users from too much texting – And let's not forget percussionists, golfers and anglers!

You might think it's just a SIMPLE case of Tendonitis but it's actually a slightly more complicated tendon syndrome known as a 'Tenosynovitis.'

In the case of DeQuervain's, one that involves two thumb tendons and the special wrappers called 'Synovial Sheaths' around them where they cross the wrist.

  • TENO refers to the tendon – (Tendons are the "ropes" which connect muscles to bones)
  • SYNOV refers to the Synovial Sheaths – (which are special protective tendon sleeves) and
  • ITIS had to do with irritation, inflammation and pain – (although inflammation is not the primary issue and is often wrongly and unfairly blamed!)

Test yourself for it easily – If you have thumb pain but aren’t sure if it's actually De Quervain's Syndrome, try these three simple tests:

Three quick and easy tests you can do yourself for De Quervain's

When should you consider getting an MRI if you have a Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow injury?

Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom answers this question in this podcast episode.

Which also covers several key, related questions including:

  • Do I need an MRI to diagnose my Tennis or Golfer's Elbow?
  • When is the right time to get an MRI scan – If at all!?
  • What will the MRI tell me... what do the results actually mean?
  • And are there any good alternatives?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI for short) is considered the “gold standard” when it comes to imaging or “seeing” what’s wrong with soft tissues.

If there are any significant defects in your tendons the MRI will reveal these in the greatest detail now medically available.

This is the best objective measure (although not the only measure) you can get of how severe the damage to your tendons may be…

(Tendon damage being the essence of what Golfer’s and Tennis Elbow are.)

But there are several things to take into consideration about if and when you really need to go to the significant trouble involved in getting an MRI

Here's where you can go to read the accompanying article, with links to articles referenced in the episode:

Why is it that casting, reeling and other fishing motions can sometimes end up causing a lot of inner or outer elbow pain – and sometimes even debilitating tendon injuries?

In this episode Allen Willette, of Tennis Elbow Classroom, explains the underlying causes as well as how to treat these frustrating fishing-related elbow injuries.

Including how to avoid the common mistakes that can impede your recovery and prolong your misery.

"The pain sometimes begins with a whisper, like the gentle 'swish' of fly line through the misty, morning air…"

"You start to notice a minor ache or little 'pinch' at your elbow as you cast or reel, especially when you've hooked a feisty bass or rainbow…"

"And your arm may feel heavy and tired at night after a long day on the water, perhaps with a dull, burning throb at your inner or outer elbow."

"Is it anything to worry about? – Or just a minor nuisance? – Another sign you're getting older, perhaps? Or is this something more?"

Why Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow are so painful at night, and what you can do to help yourself sleep.

One of the worst things about Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow is that it can sometimes hurt so much at night that it keeps you from sleeping.

But even if your sleep isn't disrupted by pain, you may still be wondering why your elbow hurts so much first thing in the morning.

In this podcast episode, Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom covers these two questions, as well as:

  • What's the best position to sleep in when you have Golfer's or Tennis Elbow?
  • Are there topical preparations or other treatments that can help relieve the pain and help you sleep?
  • And should you wear a brace in bed at night around your wrist or elbow – or is it better not to?

Does Swimming Help Or HURT Tennis Elbow? Let's talk about swimmer's, Golfer's and Tennis Elbow.

Hi this is Allen Willette with the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast.

Whether you developed an injury swimming and think of it as “Swimmer's Elbow”…

OR you developed a Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow injury some other way – but happen to love to swim…

I'm guessing there are probably two or three key questions on your mind: First off:

  1. Is swimming bad for Tennis or Golfer's Elbow?Does it cause or aggravate it?
  2. Secondly: Could swimming possibly be a good rehab exercise for your Tennis or Golfer's Elbow? – (Especially if swimming wasn't what caused it in the first place)
  3. And, lastly: Should you STOP swimming until your injury heals? – (Especially if swimming IS what caused your injury in the first place)

So, let's dig right into the question of whether swimming causes or aggravates Tennis Elbow... (Listen to the podcast episode above or...)

Do Lotions, Creams And Sprays Help Your Tennis Elbow Heal? Lotions, sprays and medicated gels are often used to relieve the pain of Tennis and Golfer's Elbow...

But can these topical remedies actually help your injured tendons heal – or are they more likely to just rub you the wrong way?

This is Allen Willette with another episode of the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast…

And I certainly get it that when your Golfer's or Tennis Elbow is screaming bloody murder...

And you can barely lift your coffee mug without stabbing pain in your elbow, (much less your tennis racket, golf clubs or leaf blower)...

You may desperately need some relief, so you buy some cream, spray or gel and rub it in… Presto! Instant relief!

Great idea, right? Well, maybe, maybe not!

At best, you may get some temporary relief from your symptoms with little or no downside…

But, here's the thing… although you could reasonably expect a cream or salve to help protect your skin as it heals from a cut or abrasion...

You can't realistically expect something you put on your skin to help your Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow injury heal faster… Okay, so, why not?

If you play Pickleball and are starting to experience pain in your elbow area, look out! You may be coming down with a case of “Pickleball Elbow!”**

Hi, this is Allen Willette with the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast, and I want to help you get off on the right track, understanding and treating your Pickleball injury whether it's your inner or outer elbow that's hurting – and whether it's Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow.

Because, if you have a tendon injury in your elbow area, it's most likely going to end up being classified as either Tennis or Golfer's Elbow.

And I'd like to help you avoid the myths, and misconceptions and all the mistakes based on them – mistakes which derail a lot of sufferers and cause them a great deal of unnecessary suffering.

It's no joke! One of my student/members who plays Pickleball in Arizona (where the sport is apparently VERY popular) recently told me that half the people he plays with are experiencing elbow pain!

Well, maybe not HALF – but a large percentage of Pickleball players are either among the walking wounded, all wrapped up in braces or bands – or they're dropping out of matches like flies.

Why are so many players getting injured?...

Dry Needling is a treatment for Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow and other conditions that involves repeatedly sticking a needle into tissues (usually muscles or tendons) which are not healing properly in the hopes of stimulating a healing response.

Or for the purpose of "deactivating" highly-irritable, pain-causing spots in muscles, known as a 'Trigger Points.'

The needle in question can be either a Medical Hypodermic needle – (which is used in this case to penetrate the tissues but without injecting anything)...

OR it can be an Acupuncture needle, which is often referred to as 'Trigger Point Dry Needling' or 'Intramuscular Stimulation' (IMS) and which is a much more common practice.

It seems unfortunate, though, that the term Dry Needling has come to refer to two very different treatments – utilizing two very different types of needles...

After all, there's a very big difference between a thin, filament Acupuncture needle and a Medical Hypodermic Syringe!

So, in this episode, I'm going to cover separately what I think should be considered two distinct treatments.

Are you looking for which exercises to do when you have Tennis Elbow – And which exercises are best?

You're in the right place – But let me ask you this, first: Are you sure it's the right time to begin those exercises?

Because, I have to tell you, there IS a right time and a wrong time to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab exercises!

And I'd to help you avoid the common mistake of starting them at the wrong time – Or in the wrong order, because it can make a huge difference to your healing and recovery!

So, let's talk about three key principles – that you won't likely hear anywhere else:

  • Why Tennis Elbow Rehab Exercises are NOT the top priority – in the beginning of your healing process,
  • How and why starting those Exercises right away often aggravates the injury,
  • WHAT the BEST Exercise to begin your Tennis Elbow rehab IS (when it is time to start)
  • (And why that exercise is NOT actually Wrist Extension)

So, put down those weights, bands or rubber bars for a minute – and let's reconsider this thing.

Because after 15 years of experience in treating Tennis Elbow and coaching people online, I've seen WAY too many people get these 3 things wrong…

(along with all the other treatment mistakes, like taking pills, icing, wearing a brace and getting Cortisone Shots)

Is Acupuncture an effective treatment when it comes to encouraging the healing process of Tennis Elbow?...

Or is it simply a way to temporarily relieve some of the pain and other symptoms of Tennis and Golfer's Elbow?

Allen Willette tackles this question in this episode of the Tennis Elbow Classroom podcast.

There does seem to be evidence that Acupuncture can reduce the pain of Tennis Elbow...

Acupuncture can generally alleviate many kinds of pain, after all.

And, in that sense, it's certainly a much safer, healthier choice than anti-inflammatory pills and Cortisone shots...

But the larger question is: Can Acupuncture actually help a Tennis Elbow injury heal?

Are there any supplements, including vitamins or herbal remedies for Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow that will help relieve your pain and support your healing process or are they a complete waste of time and money?

It's a question I'm often asked by my members in the forum – and in my practice treating Tennis Elbow sufferers directly.

Many people want to avoid toxic anti-inflammatory pills – for very good reasons, and they're looking for natural alternatives for both pain relief AND to support their healing process.

The problem is that desperate Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers tend to get a little carried away seeking remedy…

And there's no shortage of claims on the Internet (some bordering on the miraculous) about all kinds of vitamins, supplements or herbal concoctions – including:

  • Basic Vitamins: A, B, C and D
  • “Anti-Inflammatory” Herbs: Ginger, Turmeric, Bromelain
  • MSM, Chondrotin and Glucosamine
  • Fish Oil / Veg-based Omega-3 Oils
  • And Collagen Supplements

Sadly, the short answer is that most of these things, beyond basic vitamins, are pointless and a waste of money, for various reasons we explore in this episode...

(At least when it comes to healing tendon injuries like Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow. Not necessarily for other problems.)

REFERENCE – Quoted in the video:

“Vitamin D plays a significant role in the tendon-to-bone healing process by increasing the bone mineral density and strengthening the skeletal muscles.”

Vitamin D And The Immunomodulation Of Rotator Cuff Injury

This study has to do with the Rotator Cuff tendons of the shoulder, and how they need to heal and form strong attachments to the bone after surgery…

But the same principle may apply to Tennis or Golfer's Elbow, because we're dealing with a similar 'tendon attachment' at our elbows.

Learn about the most powerful self-massage methods to use from a professional Neuromuscular Therapist, who treats these injuries every day.

Here's a quote from the episode:

I truly believe Advanced Massage Therapy Techniques are the “Missing Link” when it comes to treating the true, underlying causes of Tennis Elbow…

And reversing that stubborn, vicious injury cycle that few things can touch. (Literally, few things TOUCH at ALL, except, possibly in the most superficial way.)

Because nothing else physically “get's into” the muscle and tendon “issues in the tissues,” at the root of the injury better...

Nothing else releases the tension and restrictions in your muscles and stimulates tendon healing like the right Massage Therapy methods can...

(Again, in my opinion, but based on a lot of experience.)

If you have Tennis Elbow and go to see your Doctor for diagnosis and treatment, it's very likely that you'll be given a prescription for Physical Therapy treatments.

But, the question is: How likely are those treatment to help you fully recover?

(Or to at least to put you well on your way to healing and recovery in a reasonable period of time.)

And what if you've already been through a series of visits and it didn't help you – What do you do NOW?

There's no doubt that Physical or 'Physiotherapy' treatments help some Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers recover…

However, in my experience, working directly with hundreds of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers for about 15 years…

And from what I've gathered from talking with my Tennis Elbow Classroom program members, Physical Therapy also seems to let a lot of people down...

And in many cases, that's after dozens of visits, MONTHS of hard work and precious wasted time and energy – that's gone forever.

NOT to disparage hard-working and well-meaning Physical Therapists.

Tennis Elbow is a stubborn, difficult to treat injury – and my skepticism and criticism has to do with the overall Medical System and how it looks at and treats these kinds of injuries.

And since Physical Therapy is under the umbrella of the Allopathic Medicine and its symptom-obsessed Model, there's quite a lot to criticize. Including how that system, in a way, ties the hands of its practitioners.

So, let's begin with a look at HOW Tennis Elbow is typically treated…

This podcast episode covers:

  • How is Tennis Elbow / Lateral Epicondylitis typically treated in Physical Therapy?
  • What are the techniques or 'Modalities' often used?
  • Is anything missing from this typical treatment protocol?
  • And are there Tennis Elbow rehab exercises you can do at home?

What causes Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow?

What's the insidious process by which repetitive motions, (whether related to work, tennis, golf or gardening) end up injuring you and causing you so much pain?

In this episode we talk about the central role muscles play in causing the injury. (It's no small part!)

First of all, Golfer's Elbow and Tennis Elbow are muscle AND tendon injuries…

And although the tendon is where the most serious part of the injury is – (And what essentially defines the injury) let's make sure we understand what the difference is between a muscle and a tendon.

Why does that matter? Because, although muscles and tendons are two parts of the same unit, they are made of different materials – and they have difference purposes.

Another big difference between them is that they heal at different rates. Tendons, unfortunately, heal much more slowly than muscles...

Do you have a Tennis Elbow treatment plan? A consistent strategy based on how to – And just as importantly – How NOT to treat it?

Here's one based on straight-forward principles of healing and my decade-plus experience successfully treating Golfer's and Tennis Elbow sufferers.

Unfortunately, the typical Tennis Elbow treatment protocol tends to be overly focused on alleviating symptoms – Not on healing.

(And we always have to remember they are not the same thing – Sometimes they are mutually exclusive.)

If you completely heal your injury there should be no more pain – but there are a lot of things you can do to relieve pain (by suppressing it, usually) that have no positive effect on healing your injury, and which, can impede healing – or even worsen your injury.

So, it’s not surprising that so many Tennis and Golfer's Elbow sufferers find themselves scrambling from treatment to treatment and from cure to so-called “cure” – without a real strategy or a deeper understanding of the injury, in desperate search of relief…

This is especially true in the beginning – Before you understand how serious your Tennis Elbow injury really is…

Before you realize it's not going to just get better permanently with a little rest, a few pills and some ice…

And before you suddenly get it!... You're trapped in a terrible, vicious cycle!

So if you need a plan for escaping that vicious cycle – What I call, “The Tennis Elbow Triple Trap” this podcast episode is for you.

And if you'd like to learn more about the Tennis Elbow Classroom treatment strategy, please follow this for more detail

In this podcast Allen Willette from Tennis Elbow Classroom discusses the pros and cons of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy in the treatment of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow. Including:

  • Whether there's any evidence PRP is an effective treatment, (based on medical studies)
  • Whether it's worth the price – and the pain afterward (also sometimes during the procedure)
  • And whether there are any better alternatives (other approaches to achieving the same goals.)

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy? PRP (and its less-sophisticated relative, Autologous Blood Injection) are in-office, minimally-invasive “non-surgical” procedures that begin by having a small amount of your blood drawn.

In the PRP procedure your blood is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, by separating them from your red blood cells and your plasma, which is mostly water and Electrolytes.

Then your platelets (along with some of your plasma) is injected into the injured area that's not healing (usually a tendon or ligament.)

Platelets are cells in your blood that are mostly responsible for blood clotting, and they also secrete growth factors that are involved in tissue healing.

(The procedure with ABI is the same, except they skip the spinning and separating step, and simply inject you with the whole blood.)

For a deeper look at PRP and ABI, including medical study cites, links to mainstream news articles and more, read my post here:

Treating Tennis And Golfer's Elbow With PRP Therapy

What exactly are the goals of Tennis Elbow rehab exercises?

There are three key things you’re trying to accomplish with resistance exercise when recovering from a Tennis Elbow tendon injury, whether it’s Tendinosis, Tendonitis or a tendon tear:

  • Muscle strengthening
  • Tendon remodeling
  • And tendon healing

In this podcast we look at each of these important Tennis Elbow exercise goals in detail. And for the article please visit:

The exercises you need for Tennis Elbow rehab are easy enough to learn – The hard part is knowing when to do them.

When done at the right time, exercises should help your recovery – But, done at the wrong time, they can make your injury worse, unfortunately!

Is the right approach to:

  • Rest for some weeks before starting exercises?
  • Do you need to wait for inflammation to go down first?
  • Or is it best to just jump right in and start them anytime?

When it comes to Tennis Elbow treatment advice, you almost always hear how important it is to “Rest it as much as possible while it heals!”

But, unfortunately, the idea that healing will “just happen” while you’re resting, hoping and waiting is a major misconception when it comes to tendon injuries.

Learn why “You should rest it!” is not very useful advice when treating tendon problems like Tennis Elbow (especially if it’s Tendinosis, which it often is)…

Hopefully, before you waste several months resting only to find the pain just as bad when you resume your activities – and realize you’re no better off!

Corticosteroid Injections: Powerful Medicine - But At What cost?

In the treatment of Tennis Elbow, the Cortisone shot is the go-to quick fix, often instantly erasing pain, almost like magic – But at what cost?

Do Corticosteroid injections offer any tangible, lasting benefits to the healing process of your Tennis Elbow?

Or is Cortisone a damaging mistake – little more than a deceptive mirage lulling you into a false sense of well being – until the illusion dissolves with your next relapse?

Here are the key points you need to know if you’re considering getting an injection or if you’ve already had one or more:

  • Cortisone shots are NOT an effective treatment for Tennis Elbow: They certainly don’t help your tendons heal (they only mask your symptoms),
  • Not only are they ineffective they can have the opposite effect; actually damaging your tendons – delaying your recovery by months or even years, (among other serious risks),
  • Medical researchers have known about the damaging effects of Corticosteriods for decades, yet despite this fact, Doctors continue to give these damaging shots – often without informing you of the full risk involved.

Does your elbow hurt from taking too many selfie pics? (And texting or using your ipad?) You may have a "new" type of Tech Injury, many are starting to call "Selfie Elbow" – But, is this Selfie Elbow really a new medical condition, or is it just the repetitive actions causing it that are new? (Hint: It's actually Tennis Elbow – So, let's treat that!)

Although it may be recommended by your Doctor, there are several key reasons why a support, brace or splint may NOT be a sensible treatment for your Tennis Elbow after all.

Unless pain relief in the short term is a higher priority for you than healing and recovery in the long term.

This is an important question we often neglect to consider in the rush of doing something to ease the pain: Will it actually help our injury heal? - Or is it just going to help it feel better temporarily?

Yes, like so much of the "common wisdom" around Tennis and Golfer's Elbow - it's counter-intuitive!

Here in this podcast and in the comprehensive article with video linked below:

  • How Braces Can Lead To Scar Tissue

Should you use ice, "Cryotherapy" or the RICE Protocol to treat your Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow?

Actually, no – Despite what many experts and authorities claim – Learn why icing does NOT help your tendon injury heal and how this treatment can actually slow your recovery instead of aiding it.
