It may seem strange, but listening to sad music when you are sad can actually relieve sadness. With life lessons taken from Thomas Dorsey, often referred to as the father of gospel, this recording lists 7 benefits.
It's important to note that while music can be a powerful tool for healing emotional pain, it shouldn't replace supportive friends, hobbies, active healthy living, and professional help. If you're experiencing intense or prolonged emotional distress, it's recommended to seek assistance from a mental health professional.

Published in 1997, lessons from Gavin de Becker's The Gift of Fear have saved lives. This book is a must-read!
Here are some of the most well-known quotes and lessons from "The Gift of Fear":
“I encourage people to remember that "no" is acomplete sentence.”
“No” is a word that must never be negotiated, because theperson who chooses not to hear it is trying to control you.”
“Niceness is a decision, a strategy of social interaction;it is not a character trait.”
“It is understandable that the perspectives of men and women on safety are so different--men and women live in different worlds...at core, men are afraid women will laugh at them, while at core, women are afraid menwill kill them.”
“There’s a lesson in real-life stalking cases that youngwomen can benefit from learning: persistence only proves persistence—it does not prove love. The fact that a romantic pursuer is relentless doesn’t mean youare special—it means he is troubled.”
“Denial is a save now, pay later scheme.”
“If you tell someone ten times that you don’t want to talkto him, you are talking to them—nine more times than you wanted to.”
“The solution to violence in America is the acceptance ofreality”
“Believing that others will react as we would is the singlemost dangerous myth of intervention.”
“We must learn and then teach our children that nicenessdoes not equal goodness. Niceness is a decision, a strategy of social interaction; it is not a character trait. People seeking to control others almost always present the image of a nice person in the beginning. Like rapport-building, charm and the deceptive smile, unsolicited niceness often has a discoverable motive.”
“Only human beings can look directly at something, have all the information they need to make an accurate prediction, perhaps even momentarily make the accurate prediction, and then say that it isn't so.”

Maya Angelou's quote in Glamour Magazine 2012 got us thinking. Why do women sometimes find it challenging to put ourselves first. To prioritize our own needs. And to be on our own side, just for our own benefit. Without exception. Without apology.
MAYAAngelou once said:
“I'm interested in women's health because I'm a woman.
"I'm sorry to say that has been the problem with a number of women. They're not ontheir own side, nor do they advocate for their own benefit.
And so I think that every woman should be out there thumping the drum, first forherself.
And many might think that’s selfish but the truth is you can only help somebody else if you’re in a position to help yourself.”

Ruth Bermudez founded Afro-Warriors to help black women to come together and help embrace healing journey and self-development. Her company is inspired by her own experience with self-forgiveness and her journey towards self-worth and self-love.
Words from Ruth: "The thing is I didn't quite know how or what to do to heal. Since I've surrendered, I wrote a note apologizing to myself for mistreating her (me) and most importantly neglecting my soul for all these years. I cut my damaged hair symbolizing me Removing the damaged pieces I was holding onto in life. Then I planted a seed symbolizing my spiritual growth and personal development.
I want to be able to share my story and experience and reach out to millions of women, who are healing from domestic violence, Absent/hateful parents, betrayal from friends/family, and academic denial, who wants to find their self-worth...."

A call for the church to be vocal and supportive of Black women and Black girls who are frequent targets of violence and abuse.
Excerpt:
"I am hoping that there comes a day when all churches and houses of faith come back to ourselves and realize that we are to be symbolic of healing, wellness, and courage by confronting violence and abuse without flinching.
I am hoping that there comes a day when victims of violence and abuse are regularly told that they are beautiful, valuable, special, and should harbor no guilt, shame, or low opinion of themselves. That the church/house of faith is with them through their journey to healing.
I am hoping that there comes a day when victims of violence and abuse can look to the church and know instantly that every house of faith is a refuge for them because every house of faith stands for and with victims of violence and not against them. There is no call to be silent about abuse & violence in the church."

We're going back to Rap/HipHop history in the early years.
During the earlier days of Hip-Hop & Rap, civil rights activist C. Delores Tucker voiced her concerns about violence and misogyny in the music lyrics. She took her concerns to media, owners of record companies, community events, and even the United States Congress. In response, some of the top Rap/HipHop artists 'dissed' her in their songs.
We also look at an example of how women can and do publicly disagree without being disagreeable.

It's true. Black women are great warriors and strategists. We come from cultures that are filled with love, compassion, and resilience. People around the world have always had needs, but so do we.
"Mammyism" That's a term I am hearing more and more often. "Mammyism" is the demand for Black women and Black girls to do more while continuing to accept that they will get less. One of the major tenets of Mammyism is that Black women and Black girls labor for people who have no intention, and therefore no plan to labor for us in return.
When we say that I want everyone to be safe, healthy, and get all of their financial needs met, I mean Black women too.

Notes from this episode:
A child who grows up in a home having healthy limits will also learn to apply such boundaries in his own life.
What Does “Boundary” mean? A boundary signifies a limit that a person has. Can be physical or emotional.
Boundaries are like contracts, “I won’t do anything to harm you” and “I expect you not to do anything to harm me.
When you’re raising kids to have healthy boundaries, it’s important to allow the children to have and express their own feelings.
The best way to teach children healthy boundaries is for parents to have healthy boundaries themselves and to model them in the home.
Showing respect for each person in the house,
ensuring everyone has rights to their feelings and
appropriate expressions of them,
and talking openly and honestly about any challenging issues demonstrate healthy boundaries for children.

To keep the silence in place is to keep the shackles in place.- Tonya GJ Prince
This recording is about Black males and abuse. It's about the power of Black males to speak to the pain of other Black males dealing with the pain of abuse and violence.
About Black males who have been sexually abused...
Black males who have been physically abused by a parent or caretaker....
Black males who have witnessed physical violence in the home....
Black males carrying have memories of being tossed across rooms when they tried to intervene as children.....
Black males carrying the pain of being unable to prevent the death of a woman they loved. A mother, a mother of their child, a sister, a friend.
It is unwise to ignore this pain.
It is destructive to ignore this pain
To keep the silence in place is to keep the shackles in place.
WE Survive Abuse encourages Black males to use the mighty power of their voices to speak about the pain, injustice, and healing of abuse and violence.

Trigger Warning (nongraphic discussion of child abuse)
"If we women and girls were better protected, there would be no ugliness to speak of."
Women & girls who speak about the violence and abuse that they experienced are often accused of being "vile" even hateful. This is wrong and unacceptable.
Women and girls are only telling true stories about violence inflicted upon them. If we women and girls were better protected, there would be no ugliness to speak of.
Tonya GJ Prince tells a short story about how language is important to Survivors of sexual violence. She talks about how a television movie finally gave her language to break the silence around years of child abuse.
