Going to the Cannes Film Festival – Today’s Advanced French Part of Theme Courses| Le Festival de Cannes
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about movies in French.
France has to go to the Cannes movie Festival, in the South of France to interview a movie director. She is taking advantage of a long weekend. Elle fait le pont “She makes the bridge”. She uses a lot of colloquial expressions in French that you can use later.
France veut aller au Festival de Cannes, dans le sud de la France, pour interviewer un réalisateur. Elle profite du long week-end. Elle fait le pont. Elle parle français avec de nombreuses expressions idiomatiques dont vous pourrez vous servir plus tard.
Texte – Aller au Festival de Cannes
Ouais, c’est chouette ! On fait le pont pour la troisième fois ce mois-ci. Le mois de mai est [n’est] pas trop dégueu. On se tire dans le sud. Les gamins, on les laisse chez Papy et Mamie en banlieue. J’ai fait leurs valises hier soir. J’ai pu [je n’ai plus] qu’à faire les nôtres.
On roule pendant 7 heures sur l’autoroute du soleil, et on est à Aix-en-Provence. Ensuite, on roule encore une petite heure et on est à Cannes, à l’aube, juste à temps pour le p’tit déje. J’ai rencard avec un jeune réalisateur sur La Croisette. Il vient de faire un docu gastronomique sur les crêpes à travers le monde. T’imagines ! Lui, il cherche à le distribuer et moi, je vais lui écrire un article pour le canard Ouest-France. Après l’entretien, on est invité à la grande soirée bling-bling. Y’aura des paillettes et du glamour.

–Les clochettes sont déjà là, une semaine avant le premier mai.
Cette année, le muguet a fleuri en avance, à cause d’un hiver doux. Il faut donc le cueillir 5 jours plus tôt que d’habitude. Mais cette exploitation nantaise fait son maximum pour que la fleur soit parfaite le jour J.
–Il faut le cueillir dans des bonnes conditions de fraicheur. On le ramasse à 3 ou 4 clochettes ouvertes, pour que après chez les fleuristes et chez les particuliers, il peut… il puisse fleurir un petit peu plus.
–Les producteurs ont surtout trouvé la solution : avant d’expédier le muguet chez les fleuristes, ils le conservent dans cette pièce, très fraiche.
–Nous l’avons mis en…. en chambre froide. Maintenant, on le conditionne dans les cartons qui, eux-mêmes, vont partir. Donc il va être protégé jusqu’au premier mai.
–L’exploitation a tout de même recruté 200 travailleurs supplémentaires cette année pour que le muguet soit fin prêt. En revanche, ceux qui comptaient le cueillir dans leur jardin ou en forêt risquent d’être déçus et devront fêter le travail avant l’heure. Cette année, plus de 60 millions de brins seront offerts pour le premier mai.

– The bell-shaped flowers are already there, a week before May 1.
This year, the lily of the valley bloomed early, due to a mild winter. Therefore, it must be picked five days earlier than usual. But this Nantes nursery makes every effort to have perfect flowers on D-day.
– It must be really fresh when we pick it. We pick it when 3 or 4 bell-shaped flowers are opened, so that it … blooms a little more at the florist’s and in peoples’ homes.
-The producers have found the solution: before shipping the lily of the valley to florists, they keep it chilled in this room, very cool room.
– We put it in… in a cooler. Now, it is packaged in cardboard boxes which themselves will leave. So it’s safe until May 1.
– The nursery still recruited 200 additional workers this year so that the lily of the valley is good and ready. On the other hand, those who were planning on picking it in their garden or in the woods may be disappointed and will have to celebrate labor day early. This year, more than 60 million sprigs will be given as a present on May 1.

- Mais il n’est pas interdit ?
- Non, je ne crois pas qu’il soit interdit. [De] Toutes façons, ça fait un peu trop presse-people. Les éditeurs suivent le mouvement pour répondre à l’attente des lecteurs. Et t’as lu [N’as-tu pas lu] le bouquin « Une vie » édité chez Stock ?
- Les mémoires de Simone Veil ?
- Ouais, il est en tête de gondole. Il fait un carton.
- Les mémoires, c’est pas trop mon truc.
- Ah oui, t’aimes (tu aimes) bien les intrigues riches, les personnages pas [qui ne sont pas] trop parfaits, les ouvrages modernes quoi.
- Oui. Je vais prendre un Beigbeder.
- Ah ben ouais, il met pas mal la zone dans le milieu littéraire. Tu vas être comblé.

Pépin de Caisse – Advanced French – Learn French with Anne’s AUDIO. Aujourd’hui, nous partons en voyage avec cette leçon qui s’appelle « Pépin de Caisse ». Un pépin est une graine, et une caisse est souvent une caisse en bois. What's 'une partie de petanque'? How is it played? What are the terms used? Listen to Anne's AUDIO L’été arrive en France. Il est temps que je sorte mes boules de pétanque. France aussi, joue à la pétanque. La pétanque est similaire au jeu de boules que les familles françaises jouent dans leurs jardins quand il fait beau. C’est le seul sport – avec les boules – que je connaisse que l’on peut jouer n’importe où – sur la pelouse si on n’a pas de terrain spécial – à tout âge, avec un verre de vin à la main.
Mais ne partez pas si vous n’aimez pas la pétanque car France parle avec beaucoup d’expressions idiomatiques en français dont vous pourrez vous servir dans d’autres contextes.
Summer time is just around the corner in France. I just took out my petanque boules. France too is playing pétanque. Pétanque, a boule game similar to Bocce ball, is played by French families in their garden when it’s nice out. It’s the only sport I know – with les boules – that you can play anywhere – on the lawn if you don’t have a specific court – at all ages and with a glass of wine in your hand.
But don’t tune out if you’re not into pétanque because France uses a lot of idiomatic expressions in French that you too can use in other contexts.
