Therapy. It can be super helpful. If you get the right therapist for your kid. Because otherwise it can do more harm than good. In this episode I share the hard lesson we learned last time, why it went wrong and what could help you when looking for the right therapist for your kid.

Monday morning brain. With three health care appointments and a funeral in the coming days I really need to get out my planner and schedule in essential relax and recharge time.
It sounds so easy. Yet somehow it's suddenly 11:30 AM and I still have to get started. Ugh. Why is this so hard? 11:30 I wanted to be at the gym, yet here I am haven't done anything yet. Or have I...
Let me take you on a journey through a regular special needs supermom morning. You might recognize a thing or two (or ten or fifteen).
This podcast is to help you realize why it is so hard to schedule in that much needed relax and recharge time. And why you should do it nonetheless. Even if your agenda always, always changes throughout the day.

Special Needs and the Christmas season. Recipe for overwhelm and meltdowns. That's why in this episode I share my favorite grounding exercise to stop the overwhelm and find my inner calm. Even when you're in a crowded supermarket or at a big family gathering. Plus an extra exercise using the 5 senses that can also help snap out of the overwhelm. If your kid needs a little help to snap out of the overwhelm, this one is great to do together! And at the end I've got a few tips to help your kid at Christmas celebrations (or any family gathering for that matter).
I think I came across the snow globe exercise a couple of years ago in my favorite Christmas book: Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year by Beth Kempton. But upon rereading it I found out I gave it a little twist. Beth does the lovely Calm Christmas podcast series as well in the weeks before Christmas. It's my favorite podcast in the winter season to relax, calm down and savour the things that truly matter. I can't recommend it enough!

One more week to go before schools are out! And woman, am I tired pfffff. Those last few weeks are always packed with stress. But this year really took the cake. So, I took out an old tool once taught to wonderboy, which helped me see when it’s time to recharge and how long I really need. On hectic times it is also so easy to forget to invest in couple time. Last week we unexpectedly had an evening without kiddo’s – and it was so nice… It was a good reminder to take more quality time together, and not wait until there are no kids around. Last tip is how to make a fun summer break for everyone. Especially when you have a kiddo that needs time to adjust.

Hope you have a great summer!

I was off the grid for a few weeks. Again. That’s why this episode is all about – the need to – go off the grid every so often as a special needs mom and/or woman and why you should not have to say sorry for doing so. Or feel the need to say sorry for anything else for that matter, like your messy house, having sandwiches for dinner, cancel lunch with a friend for the 2nd time, the tantrum of your kid or dealing with depression or burnout still or again.
*
In this episode I talk about why it is totally understandable to shut off the outside world temporarily. What was the big game changer that helped me really relax and recharge in times like this. And how a King’s gala and Mel Robbins relighted that spark inside of me that helped me show up for myself and thus the outside world.

The hardest thing I find as special needs mom? Dealing with the relapses and depression of my kids. Meds that don't work any longer; being different; losing friends because you're no fun to play with; not getting that internship because of your condition; constantly tired because of your chronic illness or because your brain is wired differently than the outside world; not being able to do what you used to do (when even fun things are too exhausting) ...
Relapses and depression are often enough part of the special needs life. And that sucks. So, what can you do? For your kid and yourself? I share the struggles of wonderboy, supergirl and me and what they (and I) need most on darker times. I hope it helps you and your kiddo too.

Goal setting with your Special Needs Child. It’s a recipe for failure and low self-esteem:

Special Needs Mom - How to have an awesome start of the year, your goals or anything really. In episode 79 of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I talk about why I go into and love hibernating during the week between Christmas and New Year; how I don’t like to start the year with a bang; how I don’t come up with excuses to stay of the grid (and neither should you) and how I have an awesome start of the year thanks to my experience with burnout, ADHD therapy, peri-menopause and Long Covid. Getting older really helps with that! O and Mel Robbins podcast as well!

Top tips to truly enjoy the holidays and prevent overwhelm and meltdowns with your special needs child. December is one of the most challenging months for special needs children. And their mom. Stress, overwhelm, meltdowns… we had it all. Until a few years ago, we changed a few things. It made all the difference for especially wonderboy. And me.
*
Hope these tips will help you and your family relax and thus truly enjoy the holidays. Ask yourself what you truly want and need (and I don’t mean for a present) this holiday season. And what your kid truly needs.
*
Follow your heart. Remember it's not about a fully decorated house, a gazillion presents, a full agenda, and kids who are able to sit through a 5 course meal. It’s about love and connection. And you can only truly connect if you are able to be yourself and relax when needed.

Yay! It’s my one year ADHD anniversary!!!!
Why I celebrate this?
And why I think you should celebrate getting a diagnose or label?
Because it helps you move forward, understand and accept yourself or your kid, and find the help you or your kid need.
Did my diagnose, meds or therapy change me?
I still don’t finish sentences. Still happily dive into rabbit holes. Am still a very creative person with all.the.ideas.
But giiiirl, the diagnose, meds and therapy have been a game changer. I was totally happy with who I was, went to college, never a problem with keeping a job, starting my own biz, doing a gazzillion things. My mind though was never quiet. And it often wasn't really nice to me.
That all changed with my diagnose, the following research, meds and therapy. Am still me. But the diagnose and research gave so much clarity about why I do things a certain way and struggle with seemingly simple things. A diagnose is not an excuse. But it is a reason. And it can really help you and/or your kid move forward.
Stay sane stay happy.

Why you should have a dopamenu or happymenu for your special needs child and as special needs mom. A dopamenu or happymenu as I like to call it, is your instant guide to snap out of overwhelm, stress, when you’re stuck in your brain, when anxiety is taking over, can’t focus on your (home)work. It’s a really great life hack to rewire your brain. How it works? It’s kinda like a restaurant menu but instead of starters, main courses, and desserts it lists little things that help you snap out of your brain and relax and recharge. In this episode I tell you what's on my menu and when I use it.
Stay sane & stay happy.

If you’ve been wondering what I was up to with all the irregular podcasts and posts the last couple of months… well this is it. A nice combination of perimenopause & ADHD, everyday life as a special needs mom and long covid. Enter chronic fatigue...
When I got the long covid diagnose a couple of weeks ago I was like really??!! Another thing I can do without? Are you freaking kidding me???!!! It explained a lot though. I mean even my ADHD couldn’t get me moving. And that says a lot in my case.
The good news: since long covid I understand way better what supergirl is going through with the chronic fatigue due to her juvenile arthritis. And thanks to my physical therapist I now have way better understanding of how to combine my energy level and daily schedule. So, that even with limited energy I can make sure my endless to-do’s become daily tadaaas.
I hope this helps you too.
Stay sane & stay happy.

Let’s be honest mom, sometimes it just sucks! No need to sugar coat it. Sometimes the whole special needs life just sucks and there’s nothing that can change that. It’s totally understandable, totally fine and it is actually healthy to acknowledge that things sometimes suck. Days you cry. Days you grieve. Days you’re just lost. Days you are beyond tired. But how do you get through those awful days? How do you make it bearable? Don’t soldier on or focus on happy thoughts, forget gratitude lists on days like this or forcefully trying to do something fun. Try one of the tips in this podcast that bring comfort instead of denial.
Stay sane and stay happy mom

In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast, I share how to keep sane as a special needs mom during the start of the school year – or any day for that matter.
*
The start of the school year can cause a lot of stress. Besides your special needs kid being anxious about a new teacher and new (or old) classmates, as a special needs mom we have to deal with the meltdowns; inform new teachers, mentors; maybe have some info ready for new classmates as well, IEP meetings, getting a 504, school supplies, special needs transport and what not.
*
I make sure I do the 3 things I share in this podcast to make the transition as smooth as possible and not lose my mind during the chaos the new school year brings.
*
To be honest, I use these 3 things all year round. And it makes a ton of difference for my mental wellbeing.
*
Stay sane & stay happy.

Summer tips for Special Needs Parents to relax, recharge and have fun. Not going on a trip this summer or just don’t know what to do with your kids all these long summer days? With most of my family members being homebodies and uhm gamers, it is a bit easier for me these days. But like most kids they are tired at the end of an intensive school year, wonderboy still has a hard time with the transition at age 18 and boy do I remember those looooong days when the kids would wake up at 5 AM! So, in this episode, I tell you the four summer tips we have that make sure everybody can relax, recharge and have fun. And I share a ton of fun ideas to do with your young ones and teens.

Chronique fatigue in kids and teens is not about going to bed too late. It’s a long-term condition marked by extreme fatigue or tiredness that doesn’t go away with rest. Like Supergirl’s doctor explained: it’s like having a jetlag 24/7 and no matter how much you sleep or naps you take, it won’t go away. It effects school attendance, school results, physical health, and even worse: a kid’s social life and happiness. In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast: what can cause chronique fatigue, what are possible symptoms, why special needs kids have a higher risk and what can you do as a parent?
Disclosure: I am no doctor. So please don’t self-diagnose. If you think your kid is struggling with this, please contact a specialist. If the doctor doesn’t take it seriously? Go find one who does.

In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I talk about signs and symptoms of special needs children: real issue or talked into?
*
When you’re autistic you’re anti-social; when there’s a smog weather alarm you have to stay inside when asthmatic; all kids taking MTX-injections get ‘allergic’ to the color yellow, the smell of fresh cut grass is enough to trigger an asthmatic allergy attack. Or is it because society keeps telling us this?
*
Wonderboy is the most social sensitive kid out there, hence why people always question him being autistic. Yet he nowadays calls himself socially awkward. Supergirl never thought much about the yellow color of her juvenile arthritis injectable medicine until she heard other kids talk about being ‘allergic’ to the color yellow because of this med. She has a yellow wall in her bedroom… And for years I would start to breath difficulty the moment I smelled mowed grass. Until my breathing therapist asked if this was truly an allergic reaction or happened because I would tense up and breath shallow the moment I would smell it.
*
What raises the question: when it comes to signs and symptoms of our special needs children, but also our own, is it really true or talked into?
*
Stay sane & stay happy.

Report card grading for children with special needs. Or better: celebrating your C-Grade kid. Wrapping up the school year there is a lot of attention for the kids that excelled. The A-Grade, honor rol, 3.6 and higher GPAl students. But what if you really tried hard and just don’t get past that C? You do the best you can, but the only thing you hear and see is that you should just try harder, study more and if you don’t get straight A’s, you won’t be successful. And that is simply not true! Nor should it matter when you tried your best. Therefore, in this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I want to plead the case to celebrate your C-Grade kid just as much as you’re A-Grade kid. Including having a bumper sticker stating you've got a C-Grade student and you're just as proud!
Stay sane & stay happy.

In episode 67 of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast, I talk about what to do when your special needs kid refuses to eat. Years ago, when big wonderboy was still a little wonderboy dinnertime was the most stressful time of the day. One look at his plate and little wonderboy asked if he could be sent to the ‘naughty corner’. Nice and quiet and no yucky food. In this episode I share what we discovered and changed to make wonderboy eat again and have a fun family dinner time. I’ll give you some useful tips that might help you discover if there is more going on than just picky eating, and how you can change this.

In episode 66 of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I explain why it is so important to find out the reason for your burnout in order to fix it. Why this is important? Because you can feel burned out or have a burn out for so many different reasons. Only when you know the real reason that led you to this burnout, you can find the solution that will help you get back on your feet.
Are you always available for instance? Or not able to say no? Do you feel guilty when you have a moment for yourself or have too much work? That are totally different reasons then being in and out of hospitals because your kid is not doing well. In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast, I’ll tell you what let to my special needs supermom burnout and what I did to get out of it. I talk about what reasons there can be for a special needs supermom burnout and what you can do against it.
Stay sane & stay happy.

In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I give you an insight in the day out of the life of a special needs mom. Why I struggle with my self-worth on days like this. And how I break that spell.
*
This week was just one of those weeks... come Thursday evening I felt worthless. I had two major things on my to-do for this week, yet here I was, exhausted, busy all day, and yet: none of the to-do's ticked off. Yay I've accomplished nothing. Or did I?
Lucky enough I learned a great trick from my therapist a few years ago that helps me get out of this dark state of mind, but also makes me feel good about myself again.
Stay sane & stay happy.

Depression in Special Needs Children: quite common, why, what to do and what NOT to. Let’s talk depression mom. I know it sucks. If I could I would bubble wrap my kids and safely store it away in a safe, nice and happy place to protect them from pain, the exclusion, the hurtful comments… But I can’t.
Our kids learn at an early age that they are different. That things won’t come easy, that they might not be able to pursue their dream. Have to give up their favorite sport. If they even can. Now throw in chronic pain and fatigue, frustrations because your classmates and even your family doesn’t get it. Oh and hello hormones. Yay. No, wonder teens with a chronic illness or brains wired differently have a higher chance to get a depression. As a parent it is the most awful experience to witness. Avoidable? No, not always. So, what can you do? What should you say? Let me share my and kids’ experience, insights, and tips.

In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I talk about the effect of ADHD medication. Unfortunately there is still a lot of controversy about ADHD medication. Whether it is really necessary, that it will turn you into a zombie, that all you need to do is take away the distractions and make it interesting. I got my ADHD diagnose at age 45. As part of my diagnoses and therapy I tried out medication. This is my story of the mind-blowing effect it had on me. And no, not because I turned into a zombie. I hope it will take some of the fear away if your kid is really struggling and your kids’ specialist suggests trying out meds.

Confessions of a confident ADHD Mind - tells the journey of parent Stephanie Anne D’Entremont, which started with a comment of her daughter’s dance teacher mentioning ADHD is hereditary. Stephanie talks about her discovery, what it brought her and how it helps her not only be her authentic self, but also how this helps her be a better parent of a child with ADHD. To quote Stephanie: “There are no problems, only solutions”.

Can you use ADHD as an excuse? Yes and no. Fact: I joke about my ADHD quirks and throw in the 'I'm sorry it's my ADHD card' all the time. But that doesn't mean I think this excuses everything. Yes, I find it hard to remember birthdays, no that doesn't mean I can just go and forget. There are hacks. Also, a lot of I'm sorry cards and flowers.... So, when can you get away with something, and when should you put on your big girl pants? I explain in this episode.

Why you should get a diagnose for ADHD and when you shouldn’t. Getting an ADHD diagnose can be extremely helpful. It can not only provide valuable insights in why and how you or your kid is struggling with certain things. It can also open up a whole can of useful tools like extra help at school, getting CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and of course meds. So, yay! Or not? In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast, I share all the pro’s of getting that diagnose. But also when you shouldn’t get yourself or your kid tested.

Too much to do fellow special needs supermom? Then this episode with a happiness hack for tired and overwhelmed special needs supermoms is for you.
A few days ago, I was exhausted. Again. Overwhelmed. Again. Because so much to do. And supergirl asked if I wanted to come take a break with her and if she could paint my nails. I did NOT have the time. But she asked (a grumpy 16-year-old) and I felt I had to oblige. Stressed and restless at the beginning something remarkable happened at the end… I still had way too much to do but instead of how I felt an hour earlier, I felt happy, energized, had a clear mind, and felt I could take on the world.
When I went over it in my head I realized why. Tune in to listen how I found out what your happiness hack is that can recharge you.

In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I share my reaction to becoming a millionaire with a learning disability. A TedX talk by Nicole Ambrose that was not at all what I was expecting when someone asked my opinion about it. Parents of a special needs child struggling in the school system: pay attention!
Spoiler: It's not about great habits, or getting the best tutor. Nicole really gives the key ingredient for any kid, but especially those with learning disabilities on how they could become anything they want, no matter the circumstances. Most importantly: how they become happy confident kids.

In episode 52 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I talk about the the 10 things every kid with autism wish you knew.
Surprisingly a lot of people don’t really know what autism is about. And with that have NO idea how to deal with someone with autism. Which can create a lot of problems on both sides. Problems that can be avoided.
Therefore wonderboy and I created this list of ten things every kid with autism wish you knew. 10 sneak peeks in their brains so to speak, to help you understand what’s going on in the mind of someone with autism.
We hope it helps you understand a person with autism better and with that support the wondergirl or wonderboy in your life the way they need to live life happy and to their fullest potential.
Wonderboy: ‘We don’t think outside the box. We think in a different shape.’
And there is nothing wrong with that.

Yup, totally. In episode 51 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast I talk about how you could have an autistic kid and not even know. Why me and my hubby totally missed the signs with our special needs child.
I mean Wonderboy is fun, social, loves to hug, looks you in the eye… no way he could be autistic right? We also had no problems at home. Let me repeat that: No problem at home. And with the movie Rain Man as our only reference to autism we thought his teacher was bonkers when she even dared to suggest this.
So, how can you have an autistic kid without you realizing?
Forget about the movie Rain Man. For one autism comes in many forms and shapes. Like our Wonderboy they could be big huggers or behave in other ways that is not seen autistic.
Second, maybe your kid looks like you and therefore you know instinctively what your kid needs. Because you already have the systems in place for you. Like not much socializing in the weekend. A strict day-to-day routine..
I tell you some signs we did not perceive as a problem but were, come to think of it, a good indication there was something going on.
Some good news: we still to this day have very little problems at home. And that might be the case for you as well. Much has to do with how you handle the possible diagnosis. Hint: it has a lot to do with not seeing it as a problem (I know, that can be easier said than done).
Little did we know back then. How much we have learned since. And how proud we are today. I hope this podcast gives you some insights but will also take the fear away of a possible diagnosis and your kid’s future.
Stay sane & stay happy.

Ever wonder why your autistic child has a gigantic meltdown each and every Christmas? It might be that big pile of surprises underneath the Christmas tree! The lack of a normal routine, traveling, behaving (whatever that means), socializing… It’s already enough for any autistic kid to break down. Not to mention that creepy elf that suddenly pops up, moves every night (although you could swear it was a doll) and apparently watches your every move.
Now throw in a pile of gifts. Or as your kid sees them: surprises. Which he already can't handle in day to day situations... Surprises that turn out to be gifts you never asked for, you don’t like, you don’t know what to do with, yet you have to be grateful for. It’s simply just too much. Yay surprises. Not. It took me 14 years to realize this and have a meltdown free Christmas. I hope my insights help you and your autistic kid to have a wonderful - meltdown-free - Christmas.
In this episode I talk about:
Stay sane 🧘 Stay happy 💃 and have a wonderful Christmas

If you feel haunted by piles of laundry, have the feeling you wanna throw your kids and hubby in the recycling bin because they just never ever do anything, can only respond in a snappy way…. It is a big sign your true needs aren’t met. And as much as I’m all for being able to relax at home… If you’re a little bit like me, you won’t. Because you’re always turned ‘on’, there is always something that can be done. Then it's time to give yourself the gift of getting out of the house. In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I tell you why it is so important to leave the house sometimes and what you should do to truly recharge yourself, to truly fill your cup (hint: it's not sipping coffee and scrolling through your socials for an hour...).
It’s dark, there are literally monsters everywhere and you’re supposed to enjoy this? How? When it is one big overwhelming experience?! Whether your kid just hates dark, is easily afraid or quickly overwhelmed, you can make it into a bearable, heck maybe even fun experience for them with the tips I share in this episode.

My daily habitat as a special needs mom? My car. Always driving and picking up supergirl to school, doctors’ appointments, friends and more. And it drained me. Another minimal 1.5 hours a day 'lost'. I was exhausted. Me-time? What was that?
Needless to say, there was a serious special needs supermom burnout. I never relaxed. Even in the car I ‘had’ to listen to the news, when I enjoyed a song but supergirl wanted her favorite channel I immediately obliged because anything to make her feel better right? Thankfully I learned to let go. And because of that I was able to turn these ‘lost’ hours into little relaxing treasures just for me. And so can you!

What I do know is what a huge impact it has on her daily school life and results, and how important it is to get the right diagnoses and help. Did you know there could be more going on when your kid is struggling with reading, besides ‘just’ dyslexia? My guest Hilary Laxson knows all about the struggles. And took action. In this episode we talk about her and her daughter’s journey.

39. Taking care of yourself - easier said done as Supermom
This episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast is all about shutting off a supermom brain and why it is important our kids don’t dial or have access to the 24/7 supermom-to-the-rescue-hotline all the time.
I’m a firm believer of quality-me time. But to be honest that’s not the easiest thing for me as a special needs Supermom belonging to the house of Hufflepuff.
Let me explain why.
Taking care of others is who I am. I’ve always took care. First, I had to take care of my parents making them smile again after my young brother died unexpectedly after a medical procedure at the age of 1.5. I was 2.5 years old. Not my responsibility you might say, but seriously how could I not try to make them happy again?
And ever since.
I’ve always been highly sensitive and big believer of fighting injustice and standing up and fight for those that can. Am now 45. And as a special needs Supermom my heart only got bigger.
And I am proud of it. But it is always what can get us supermoms in trouble. Because the sight effect is that it’s hard to tune out. When my kids are in stress, I am in stress. When my kids are in pain, I’m in pain. When they are unhappy…. See the trap?
The funny thing is. I do have quality me-time. Went to a Bob Ross exhibit last week out of the blue. Had a 3-hour long bath. The problem? It doesn’t shut off my brain. Doesn’t numb my 24/7 availability mom radar.
The good thing is I do recognize the symptoms nowadays. I’ve listed a few red flags in this podcast episode. Recognize some of them? Then, maybe like me it is time you find something to switch off your brain. So you can truly recharge and stay that Special Needs Supermom.
We not only need to find something that shuts off our brain, we also must learn how to say no. Realize it is ok to say no. Even to your kids. Especially to your kids.
Hope this podcast helps you say it is ok to say no and realize what you need to recharge. Enjoy via your favorite platform like YouTube, Apple, Spotify, Google, Amazon and more.

Two kids under 6. Homeschooling. Entrepreneur. Jennifer Peyton does it all. I was (and am) in awe! During Covid she pivoted her business from coaching mompreneurs to specifically help homeschooling mompreneurs. Was homeschooling on her wish list? Not at all. But when she got her eldest diagnosed and found out he wasn’t entitled to extra support, she decided homeschooling was the best thing she could do for her kid. It was a search for sure, and still can be challenging (as you might here later on), yet she makes it work.
How? By figuring out the natural cycle of her kid, having systems in place and relax. Time batching, knowing her limits (yay for not being on all.the.platforms) and snack baskets make life so much easier. Her advice to mompreneurs: don’t try to do.it.all, have boundaries and set a time to work on your biz every day.
Jennifer Peyton lives in Ohio with her husband and two kids. She homeschools her son who has ADHD and SPD while running two businesses. She helps other homeschooling entrepreneurs simplify their business so they can create a consistent income and spend guilt free time with their family. How is it to be the sibling of someone with special needs? In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast, I chat with no other than Michelle Rohr!!! A brilliant entrepreneur (like multi 6 figure brilliant) and sister of two brothers on the autistic spectrum.
Michelle and I met at a biz retreat in Florida February 2020 (a week later the world stopped) where this podcast was born. Her take on how to run a business had a major impact on how I view my business. ‘Life is hard enough, therefore your business should be fun, should feel like your personal playground.’ This statement really hit home, because as a special needs mom I so relate to the “life is hard”. So, yes, my business should feel like fun indeed! Hence, the birth of the Special Needs Supermom Planner the Spring of 2021!
In this episode Michelle and I talk about how it was for her to grow up with two brothers on the spectrum, and how as a sibling you can sometimes provide a new perspective because you are not so on top of the case as a parent. We discuss the challenges of not having facilities nearby, leaving college to support your family and the peace of mind when your adult sibling is able to live in a facility providing all the support they need.
*
We also talk about how growing up with two special needs siblings has affected the choices she made in life, how it inspired her to start her business and the power of passive income.
*
Michelle Rohr is a wife, mom of two, and lover of all things personal development. Everything started to change for her when she committed to take 100% responsibility for her life. Now, she runs a multi 6 figure business from her zone of genius and spends her day reveling in the experience of being able to do whatever the heck she wants to do - which, she finds, is exactly what makes a woman unstoppable. One of her favorite things is giving other women the space to discover that they can want what they want without apology. The magic, Michelle says, is YOU.

Yay Summer is almost here!!! With the weather getting warmer and summer approaching, a lot of military families are about to hit the road again. On the way to a new assignment, a new location, new adventures.
Moving can be extremely stressful. Especially for special needs kids. We as parents stress about finding a new house, finding new therapists, whether the current IEP will be accepted at the new school, items that get lost or broken during the move etc. But we know we’ll figure it out. For our kid however his or her world is upside down. Especially if you have a kid that is set in his or her way, thrives on routine, has a hard time making friends. Therefore episode 36 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast is packed with tips to make the next move as pleasant as possible for your special needs kid. From letting your kid pack a box by themselves to taking pictures of their current bedroom before it gets packed, so you can set their room up the exact same way in your new house.
Remember: if you stress, your kids stress. You can bet something will go wrong. Like not having a house ready for the following 6 weeks… or not finding a specialist nearby… fruit the movers packed which is now rotten, smelly and leaking on your favorite carpet… It sucks. But you’ll live. If you keep it cool, or treat it like an adventure, your kids will likely handle it the same way.
And yes, your kid is totally allowed to feel sad, or feel a bit scared. It is ok and totally normal to feel that way. Tell them that, and tell them you will miss your friends too, but are really happy that you are going on this new adventure together.
Good luck with your move and have your wine ready! You deserve it!
Ps. Have a great tip yourself that really helped your special needs kid with their move? Do share! Making (medical) decisions on your own because your partner is deployed - when school doesn’t see a problem or wants to provide the help your kid needs - working full time when having special needs kids - quality me-time - lockdown challenges. In this second episode of the military series my guest (and fellow redhead) Andrea Takash and I talk about daily life, the challenges we face being in the military while having special needs kids and how we stay sane.
Andrea has been married for 19 years. She and her husband have two daughters, ages 12 and 8; and a dog. Besides being a special needs supermom and military spouse, she is also the Director of Regulatory Communications at FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products! Before joining FDA, Andrea served as a Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for more than 12 years where she led the communication efforts for highly sensitive environmental clean-up projects, and managed media relations/public outreach during several natural disaster events, including Hurricane Ivan.
As if that was not enough, Andrea also served in several volunteer roles, including an Army FRG leader for two different units and Site Council president for her daughters’ elementary school. In her spare time, Andrea loves running, yoga and traveling.

Being in the military can come with a series of unique challenges when it comes to your special needs child. Moving probably being the biggest of them all. In this episode advocate Shelly Agostine is back to talk with me about the challenges you might face when relocating. We discuss transitioning to a new state, as it can be extremely stressful when suddenly faced with different state standards, requirements, re-evaluations and service delivery. When relocating it is good to be aware of possible challenges and know where to find the help and information you need to make sure your child receives the services (s)he requires. Military or not.
Below is a list of resources mentioned in this podcast (some public, some military only):
Shelly Agostine is the owner of Advocate 2 Educate, LLC based in Colorado. As a trained Special Education Advocate/Consultant (ISEA-trained and member of COPAA) she helps parents and students gain access to the services, supports and accommodations they need through an Individual Education Program (IEP). She assists parents and students in acquiring the appropriate accommodations through a 504 plan and assists families in coordinating community services. More info: https://www.advocatetwoeducate.com.
Having ADHD, what’s it like? We know it from the sideline as a supermom, but how is it when you actually have it? Today’s guest Jordan Rawlings got the diagnosis not until she was an adult. She was ‘just’ that energetic kid - ADHD is just for boys, right?
In this episode Jordan and I talk about how it was like to be that energetic kid, what problems she ran into, how it was to get the diagnosis relatively late in life and how it has helped her. She shares some useful insides in how it actually is to have ADHD and therefore can give us supermoms some really helpful tips & tricks that can help your kid thrive.
Jordan Rawlings has a bi-weekly comedy talk show / podcast where she talks about life with ADHD together with her friend Lex. Originally hailing from Washington State, Jordan earned her BFA in Theatre Performance from the University of Idaho moving to Chicago, where she is currently making waves as an actor/writer/theatre maker. The journey to get a diagnosis can be overwhelming, long and expensive. “I very clearly remember feeling like I was in over my head, even as a trained medical professional”, said Joya Van Der Laan. She is a family nurse practitioner, functional medicine specialist, business owner, wife and mother of 3 children of whom 2 have special needs. Feeling woefully unprepared, Joya started researching treatments including both traditional and integrative options and, together with her husband, created the online platform Your Autism Game Plan. The goal: help parents find their yellow brick road and provide a different perspective, including the integrative treatment options that are not generally discussed in the traditional medical and therapy settings. Listen to this episode to hear us talk about our frustrations, meds, vitamins, food sensitivity and how we found what worked best for our kid.

Motivating your teen. If that is not challenging enough, now throw in a chronic illness. This is the phase were you maybe want your teen to step it up when it comes to taking good care of themselves, doing what’s best for their body. While they might be done with it. Ready to throw in the towel because they are done taking meds, being different, having to constantly take their actions in consideration. It can be hard to be motivated, especially if teens realize the impact of their condition on their possible dreams, plans, future. Can you imagine having to give up on something you really want because your body doesn’t want to cooperate? What to do then? How to motivate your kid then? In this episode some tips on how you can motivate your teen. And take care of you as well.
I don’t know how long your to-do list is, but for me it seemed like a never ending list that just haunted me. Every time I crossed something off, I could add 3 new ones to my list. So, instead of feeling like I accomplished stuff, I felt like being stuck in the twilight zone. Never ever being done. And seriously, is our to-do list as special needs supermoms ever going to be done?
Fortunately, I came across a few great hacks that helped to seriously shorten my to-do list, that stopped making me feel like I was haunted by my never ending list of must-do’s and instead make me feel good at the end of the day. In this episode I’ll share my 3 tips to go from a to-do list to a ta-da list.
Busy minds don’t just calm down because it is dark outside or because it supposedly is bedtime. Bedtime? When your mind is still doing overtime? How can you relax if your head is still full of the impressions of the day? 🤯 When you feel wide awake? All the conventional sleep tips like turning off all screens well before bedtime, a warm bath 🛀, reading a bedtime story 📚(seriously I read for at least half an hour), none of them worked for wonderboy. We found out - years later - it had to do with the fact that he simply couldn’t turn off his mind. In this episode of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I share why playing with Legos was the solution for wonderboy 🧘♂️ and give you 7 tips that might help the mind of your overactive kid relax and 🛌🏾 get ready for bed. Happy dreams!

Mandatory homeschooling during a pandemic. How do you keep sane and not let a total educational year go to waste? In episode 27 of the Special Needs Supermom Podcast I give you 5 tips on how to keep mandatory homeschooling doable. With a bonus tip on how to combine working from home with homeschooling. These tips will help you not only navigate true the minefield of homeschooling, it will keep you sane and every member in the house happy. You might even motivate your kids to finish their tasks! Happy mandatory homeschooling!
Beginning of the year you can burst with ideas. And sometimes dare to even dream about a future where things look brighter: with your kids doing well and you finally having time for yourself. And then your kid has a flare up - or another severe epileptic episode and - poof - that was it for dreaming. But especially when times are tough it is essential to keep on dreaming and take even the smallest steps to make those dreams come true. Whether it is to pick up your hobby or build a career. In this podcast some tips on how to turn dreams into reality. One minute at the time.
Setting goals. It seems to be the thing to do when a new year starts. And indeed, they can be really helpful on what you want to focus your energy on. Is there a special skill you want to help your kid conquer? Is it something for yourself? It really can be anything: from developing a new skill to saving money for a treatment. But when setting the goal… 1. make sure they are your goals - your dreams. Not goals based on the expectations from the outer world. 2. Focus on the journey. 3. And while we’re at it: don’t forget to schedule in some fun!
What a year it has been! As if we don’t have enough challenges without lockdown, mandatory homeschooling, a totally new set of social rules etc. But we made it. One way or the other. Covid 19 brought some unexpected blessings for this family with distanced learning available for supergirl and no - much dreaded - social week at the start of college for wonderboy. Great, but with everybody at home, it was also exhausting for this supermom who is always ‘on’. I really needed to learn to take a step back and implement quality-me time. Thankfully we as supermoms can learn from each other. So, in this compilation episode you’ll hear all the tips from all the guests who were on the show this year. I learned to ask for help. Looking forward to hearing what you learned and implemented to make it easier for yourself.
Upfront warning: this episode isn’t about following a medical diet because your kid is actually allergic to something or is diabetic. I’m no doctor, so when you go down this road - check with your GP.
The amount of people that told me they saw a documentary of a kid ‘cured’ from autism because he stopped eating gluten. Or the people that keep on telling me if my supergirl would not drink any dairy it would stop her juvenile arthritis. If only it would be that simple. Can a diet help? Yes. Veggies are of course better than cupcakes, so a healthy diet can definitely help with overall wellbeing. But will it ‘cure’ a disease? Highly unlikely (again I’m not talking high blood pressure and stop eating salty and fatty food). This episode is about why a diet works. And why it doesn’t.
Yay, holidays… the thought alone is enough to stress out many. When you have a special needs loved one it can even be more challenging. Therefore, this episode is how to make family holiday gatherings a fun experience for your special needs kid, and the rest of the family, including you. It will help prevent getting ‘the look’ from your sister when your kid stops playing with her kids and grabs his iPad. It can help making your mom understand why all her grandkids can show up in matching outfits and sit at the decked dinner table eating for 2 hours everything they’re served, while your kid could only show up wearing her superman costume, only eats hotdogs and leaves after she is finished. It can even help reduce the amount and severity of tantrums your kid throws. And last but not least it will help you not having that constant feeling of being a failure because everyone seems to have such a well behaved family, expect you. This year you’ll finally be able to enjoy the holidays, tantrums and annoying family members and all. By managing expectations.
I don’t know about you, but as a Special Needs Supermom I’m always ‘on’. You don’t get to be called a supermom just like that, right? It involves 24/7 action, ready to come to the rescue and take on the world while doing so. Always ‘on’ is one of our biggest supermom strengths but can also be one of our biggest downfalls. Because if you are always wired, how can you unwind and recharge? To be honest I find it hard to turn off. The only times I can really, really unwind is when I am not at home. Preferably abroad, so I am not in shouting distance or jump in the car to come to the rescue. This of course is NOT healthy and a recipe to burnout. In this podcast tips to prevent falling in the supermom trap.
Those moments that your kid goes completely bezerk. In isle 9 of Walmart. Because of who knows what. Or is about to freak out in his favorite Lego store because you surprised him with a gift. Or because the party is too loud. Or out of sheer frustration because she can’t make herself understand. It is heartbreaking too watch your kid being completely overwhelmed and not being able to snap out of it. And when older it can sometimes even become scary and dangerous. So, next time your kid is completely overwhelmed, here are 5 tips that can help your kid to calm down and get out of overwhelm mode. Helps mommies too by the way ;).
Imagine you are an anxious kid, set in his or her ways. Now combine that with the festive season. First there is Halloween, one parade of darkness filled with creepy masks. Then comes Thanksgiving, long travels in a cramped place - lots of family that says you need to interact (because it’s fun!) and ‘that you just have to act normal (what’s that?)’. After which that creepy elf suddenly appears at your house watching everything you do. Have I mentioned Christmas is literally one big pile of surprises? While you hate surprises?! As supermom you can be torn between wanting to hang onto old traditions, the feelings of your kid, and adjusting to family expectations. This episode is how to make the last months of the year as pleasant as possible. For everyone.
Homework. As a kid I was easily distracted and had a hard time focusing. But that was nothing compared to the challenges I saw with my autistic wonderboy and my dyslexic supergirl. Having to do homework for half an hour is impossible if you can’t grasp the concept of time. And there is no chance you can solve a math problem if reading the instructions is a challenge all by itself. But Thank God there are hacks. Together with time, homework becomes doable and bearable. For both kids and their parents! Hereby my best hacks.
You often hear people say they knew something was wrong from the early stages. And how they had to fight the system and often family too, to get a diagnosis and help. Listener Melody asked how this was for us. Well, in our case it was the opposite. We saw a wonderboy that looked just like his parents. Having a lot of fantasy and only interested in playing with one thing we didn’t see the problem (hey, how many hobbies do you have?). And we had a very feisty, stubborn and active little supergirl who was so eager to conquer the world, she skipped the crawling and went straight to walking. This is the story of wonderboy and supergirl, how we found out, acceptance, guidance, cultural differences, making choices and where we are now. Don’t feel bad if you don’t see the signs. And if you do have a diagnosis remember to tailor the possible resources to you and your kid. There is no one size fits all therapy or help. Listen to YOURSELF. As a parent you are the one who knows what is best for you and your kid.
Have a kid that doesn’t grasp time? Has no sense of which month it is, or which one follows after the other? Doesn’t get that if he sleeps in until noon breakfast = lunch? During summer holidays is completely lost and freaks out if you mention school will start in 4 weeks, or 2 days? This episode is about how your dreamer can go from lost in space to master of the universe. And how that will set him or her up for success.
Have you gone loco yet during your staycation? Or were you lucky enough to be able to escape for a while? If not, here are some great tips to make the end of this weird summer a fun adventure! At home. Start with everybody’s expectations - see what is doable and what and how to bring those vacation adventures and vibes to your house - and pencil them into a calendar! Have a great staycation!
Summer holidays can be a challenge. This year maybe even more than before. Whether you have special needs kids or not. Whether you’re staying at home or are able to go on a trip. This episode is about how to keep sane and not become your kids’ personal holiday entertainment planner. How everybody can have quality fun time, including you as a mom!
Part 2 of the Grieving Series. As special needs parents, we are constantly confronted with the limitations the special need brings, the uncertain future and more. It can be a relief when there is finally a diagnosis. But at the same time, it is sad as well. In this episode I talk to grief coach, Tammy Faulds from www.innertravelcoaching.com, about how personal and individual grief is, how to recognize it and how to deal with it so you can see the light again instead of feeling isolated, scared and overwhelmed.
Did you ever think about getting help for you? And I don’t mean like therapy, but support for your everyday activities? This podcast is actually inspired by my interview with Laura Hernandez of Mamasystems. When she talked about having a babysitter drive her special needs kids to therapy, because her time is more valuable spent at home with the other kids… my mind was blown. And it started me thinking about what kind of help or support can free some of our valuable time so we can spend it better: on our other kids, on ourselves so we can recharge our batteries, on work or whatever. There is more help to ease up our lives than we think. Let’s dive in.
Feeling overwhelmed with all that's on your plate? Get inspired by Laura Hernandez, a supermom of 10 kids, of whom 3 are adopted and have prenatal alcohol syndrome. She homeschools 5 of her kids and has her own business! Did I mention she still has a weekly date night and has time for herself? Get inspired and uplifted by hearing Laura’s story, how systems brought calm and order to her home, how it inspired her to start her own business www.mamasystems.net, and how she is now helping other mama’s to thrive.
Jessica Temple is a neuro psychologist and a young mom of two special needs boys, 4-year old Benji who is on the autistic spectrum and almost 2-year old Alex who had a prenatal stroke causing all kinds of developmental challenges. In this episode, Jessica talks about the frustration of not being heard when you know there is something wrong. Her journey since. How friendships change. Skeptical reactions of family. Dealing with the effects when therapy and more stopped because of Covid-19 and how they restarted. And we talk about why she and her husband, Lewis, started their podcast Thriving in the Midst of Chaos (and a very useful hands-on blog!), check it out here: https://midstofchaospod.com/
Special Need or not: there is something seriously going on that needs to be talked about. The death of George Floyd and what is happening now. Why? Because the news is everywhere. Racism is everywhere. No matter where you live. And in some countries being of color can be downright dangerous. So, talk. Especially if you have an autistic kid that just doesn’t get it that some remarks or behavior is just plain wrong. South Park jokes are really funny. In South Park. But if your kid doesn’t get that he can’t repeat Cartman’s jokes in public, or just doesn’t get that rappers use the N-word in their songs and as a white person he can NEVER say it or sing along - NOW if not ever is the time to educate your kid. This is the time to not excuse it, not to let it go by and maybe even to get angry because it is the only way to get through to your kid. In this episode I’ll give you examples on how to talk to your kid and have some resources to help you.

As special needs parents we are constantly confronted with the limitations the special need brings, the uncertain future and more. It can be a relief when there is finally a diagnosis. But at the same time, it is sad as well. Because sometimes this means saying goodbye to dreams you might have - for your kid, but also for yourself. And after accepting (what else can you do) whatever diagnosis, the grief, of course, doesn’t stop. Because the diagnosis is just the beginning. This episode therefore is about grief - I will tell you a bit about my story. The grieving I had and have. How I deal with it. After this episode I hope you have the feeling you are not alone in this. That it is ok to grieve and what you can do to make the sad days bearable.
Shelly started a parent group in Fort Bliss years ago, supported by MG (Ret.) Dana J.H. Pittard and Garrison Commander Col. (Ret.) Joe Simonelli, to connect to other people going through the same experiences but also to find people she could learn from. Today Shelly is a trained advocate for special needs kids and their parents (ISEA-trained and member of COPAA). She believes in “Bridging the Gap” for exceptional children. As an advocate she assists parents and students in acquiring the services, accommodations and access they need to make progress and be prepared for post-secondary education/life. She does this by helping parents and students create an appropriate Individual Education Program (IEP), 504 and to coordinate community services. Check out her website www.advocate2educate.com!
Rant time! The so-called advice or comments you get as a special needs parent can be annoying to say at least. Yes, people often mean well, but truth is there are things you should never ever say to a parent of a special needs kid. It is almost never helpful and can be quite dumb or even hurtful. Here’s my list of the things that really get to me and how I deal with it. Truth be honest: that dealing part is part experience and part the mood I’m in.
Jennifer Chamberlin is a successful bilingual virtual assistant and founder of My Bilingual VA based near Paris, with her own team. On top of that she is also a mentor for aspiring French VA's. She is also a supermom of a 12-year-old boy who has type 1 diabetes. How do you manage if you have a kid who needs to be monitored 24/7? Who can’t just have a sleep-over or go on a fieldtrip? How do you handle the feeling you always have to be ‘on’? Jennifer talks about how she and her husband found out, deal with the daily challenges, and make life as much fun as possible for their son.
Do you also get constant so-called advice from the outside world? Do your parents, siblings, friends and even total strangers you walk past in the grocery store know exactly what you should do? Did any of these comments ever made you feel better? Are they ever really helpful? No matter how good their attentions are, it is not OK. And after 16 years of practice, I found THE solution to handle these so-called advices. I’ve got a friendly version and straight-forward solution for you. That will stop people from talking and you from feeling crappy and wanting to go for that bottle of wine afterwards. Your kid, your situation. The end.
Joan Hale is an inspiring businesswoman I’ve met on a business event in Florida! Side detail: she is 73-years old! I can only hope I will have her thrive and energy at that age. Besides being her awesome self, Joan is also a special needs supermom of a 45-year-old son. How was it for her to raise her son in a time where autism still really wasn’t talked about much, where special needs wasn’t even a term, and where support systems for kids like ours didn’t exist. What are the challenges she faced back then, how did she help him grow, and what are the challenges she facing now, with her son living with her? Learn and listen.
Monica Delgado is an entrepreneur extraordinaire with several successful businesses and is the stepmom of a fantastic teenager with autism - son of famous UFC & Pride fighter, Jiu Jitsu world Champion and MMA coach Ricardo Almeida. How is it to be a stepmom, dealing with ‘the other parent’ who might see things differently? What can you do, how far do you go in guiding your kid the best possible way, so he fully grows to his potential? How do you grow into a boy that needed help ‘just’ washing his hair to become the homecoming king?! Monica shares her amazing and inspiring story.
Why is it so important to talk to your special needs kid about special situations like Covid 19? Because no matter their IQ, their age, their special need: kids notice. They notice that something has changed and more importantly: how you’re handling it. This episode is about how to talk (and listen) to your kid and find a way to deal with whatever new situation you are in. This might be different depending on whether the special need is mental or physical. But the outcome will be the same: less anxious kids, that feel heard, understand and contribute to the solution.
