Is there an ethical way to do religion? That’s one of the many topics we explore in the newest podcast episode with Ann Russo, LCSW, founder and clinical director of AMR Therapy. As a queer phycologist with a MA in Theology, Ann speaks to what religious trauma is, how it affects the body and brain, and how to navigate and heal from religious trauma. From growing up in a secret queer household in the 80’s and 90’s to entering religion herself, Ann shares personal stories that inform the way she’s able to help others today. Religious trauma can look differently for everyone, and today’s episode is a reminder that you’re not alone. Tune in for venerability, science-backed explanations, and a path forward.“Studies show that queer folks have higher rates of mental illness, suicide, and drug abuse. Some church folks like to say it’s because you’re queer. No — it’s because of the level of rejection.”SHOWNOTES- Connect with Ann: https://www.annrusso.org/- Join Patreon: patreon.com/unrulytravel

To celebrate queer joy, blossoming, and vibrant life I invite you to join us for a special Unruly Podcast episode. It weaves together the illuminating stories of 6 different people, now in their mid 20’s and 30’s, who grew up in rural spaces as queer youth. There they found refuge in nature, belonging in the outdoors, and community in the unlikeliest of places. You'll find yourself laughing and crying right along with us as we dive into bubbling river rapids, contemplate forbidden crushes in the heat of summer church camp, and explore all the spaces in-between in an episode that defies time and gender norms. This conversation is a glimpse into the tender coming-of-age moments for queer youth and the hilarity, struggle, and metamorphosis that brings us to adulthood.SHOWNOTES- Join the Unruly Podcast on Patreon: www.patreon.com/unrulytravel

Feeling angry in 2025? Join the club. (No, seriously, we have some important things to discuss!)In this episode we sit down with Kallie Klug to discuss all things anger: what it really is, what it does in the body, and what the hell to do with it once it’s here. So many of us shy away from anger and even couple it with shame. Why? Suppressed anger can express itself as stomach issues, jaw and shoulder pain, and irritating chronic symptoms. In this episode Kallie teaches us how to have conversation with tension in our body, process full body rage and interpersonal rage, and tune into safety in difficult times — necessary skills for improving physical and mental health. With studies showing that the prefrontal cortex shuts down during conflict, knowing how to take space and listen to your body is so important for effective communication and community building. This episode is for anyone who wants to improve their life by learning somatic exercises for anger, with specific tips for travelers and activists. - Email the new travel segment at hellounrulytravel@gmail.com- Episode #71 on people pleasing: https://wanderwoman.online/index.php/2024/08/09/how-to-stop-people-pleasing-somatics-kallie-klug/- KaliSomatics: https://kalisomatics.com- Unruly Travel & Living Blog: unrulytravel.com- Unruly email newsletter: buff.ly/4a1bPwT

An anti-diet dietitian sounds like an oxymoron, but when it comes to true health, nutrition, and healing it's exactly what the world needs. Enter: Taylor Wolfram. After becoming disenchanted with standard Western ways of helping clients, Taylor Wolfram set out to create her own weight neutral, anti-diet practice that considers how body politics affect us all, human or beyond. Though we usually connect food with just fullness and hunger, Taylor explains how food impacts our focus, mood stability, brain function, motivation, and nervous system regulation. In this episode we not only discuss the impacts of restricting food, but ways to heal your relationship with it and your body. We dive into the difference of subjectively vs objectively being with your body, unpack why an unnourished brain can't do the deeper healing work, and untangle veganism vs a plant-based, health-focused diet. “If you don’t currently feel connected to your body or like you can trust your body, know that you can get there. We are all born embodied, intuitive creatures — we’re just conditioned out of it.”- Unruly Italy guides: https://wanderwoman.online/index.php/tag/italy/- Unruly Tunisia guides: https://wanderwoman.online/index.php/tag/tunisia/- Taylor Wolfram's website: taylorwolfram.com - Befriending Your Body book: https://prf.hn/l/p3jnyZQ/- Befriending Your Body card deck: https://prf.hn/l/kVkz132/- Ginny Kisch Messina: theveganrd.com- veganhealth.org- Unruly Travel & Living Blog: unrulytravel.com- Unruly email newsletter: buff.ly/4a1bPwT

Is foraging legal? Is it bad for the environment? Is foraging innate or learned? These are the top questions being asked on Google around foraging, a regulating activity that our ancestors depended on to sustain life. Here today to answer our questions and go beyond the technicalities of foraging is Alan Muskat, the founder of the largest foraging education company in the world. In this episode Alan touches on the essence of foraging: feeling safe, feeling provided for, and feeling at home in the world. (And you thought it was just about food!) We also discuss how artificial scarcity pushes us to pay for food rather than collect it for free ourselves, why societal boxes are deadly, and how cities are actually some of the best places to practice foraging. Ken Ilgunas, author of 3 books including “Walden On Wheels,” has been called many things: a wanderer, pro-hitchhiker, journalist, and Alaskan back country ranger among others. Now, he’s taken on new titles like “husband” and “dad.”What happens to the most adventurous of our society when we enter a phase that calls for settling down, growing roots, and re-entering institutions? It’s a life transition that can feel tricky and hard to navigate. Luckily, Ken candidly shares what he’s learned while walking down this uncertain road that comes with no playbook. In this episode he takes us into the company of strangers by telling stories made of hitchhike magic, ex-cons, and religious hallucinations while thumbing his way thousands of miles across the US. He then takes us behind the scenes of the writing process where he transforms these gritty life experiences into something worthy of being page-bound. Listen in as we ponder the sacredness of books; how writers risk damaging relationships in the name of creating good art; and how writing changes the narrative about our own lives. “I think to be a good artist, a small percentage of you has to be a sociopath. You have to be willing to sacrifice something in the name of the art.”Ken’s Substack: https://kenilgunas.substack.com/Second Gear / Podcast Sponsor: https://secondgearwnc.com*Let them know the Unruly Podcast sent you for 10% off!- Unruly Travel & Living Blog: wanderwoman.online

Have you ever looked at a villain and thought that they looked divine, that their words or actions were delectable, or that they were living deliciously? In today’s episode Kallie Klug explains how we’ve gotten villains all wrong, and what we can learn from them when it comes to our own people pleasing tendencies. In a time of so much material excesses, why do we feel so empty as a society? Why has it become so dang hard to simply take care of ourselves? And must one be wealthy to live sustainably?Welcome back Carly from Consciously Clueless to the podcast as she and Calen dissect these topics together. In the spirit of turning issue into action, they share epic ideas for alternative gift giving as the holidays move in upon us. They also share about their mental health journeys and what particular practices (such as therapy, mindfulness, and somatic movement) have helped them along the way. This episode was lovingly created for anyone who struggles around the holidays with mental health, wants to lessen their material overconsumption, or is ready to directly contribute to a greener future. “There is pressure on people during the holidays to spend money. Why spend it on shit that no one cares about? In today’s episode Jimena Suárez sits down with us to discuss the ‘pursuit of beauty’ and how that concept relates to fashion, leather, and social justice. Did you know that with just 3 mature cactus leaves you can create one linear meter of plant-based leather? Incredibly, cacti collect water from the air overnight and can be grown in their native space, organically, with no pesticides or herbicides. In addition to sharing epic facts, Jimena breaks down myths about leather production (like, “Isn’t it sustainable because it’s a byproduct of meat and dairy?”), speaks to what going vegan 14 years ago in Mexico was like, and shares her thoughts on superficiality, style, and sustainability.Join the Unruly Podcast on Patreon: www.patreon.com/unrulytravelThe Travel Blog: https://wanderwoman.online/Sentient website: https://sentientthebrand.comFashion/Justice education: Collectivejusticefashion.orgLearn about dairy: https://wanderwoman.online/index.php/2022/12/09/dairy-indsutry-facts/Podcast episode with ALL: https://soundcloud.com/unrulystories/all-veganismSign up for email alerts: buff.ly/3CUNL0D

In today’s episode we sit down with the mother and daughter duo who created the Trude Sojka museum in Quito, Ecuador. The house museum celebrates the life of Tude Sojka while educating and inspiring visitors from all over the world. Gabby says “We are nature” and shares with us how that sentiment, plus the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador, influenced her grandmother's art (as well as her own). She also lays out a timeline of Trude’s life, include the periods before and after the Holocaust. Through the preservation of hundreds of paintings, Anita explains how you can step back in time and see how Trude used her art to process her difficult experiences as well as her joyous ones.Watch the video interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaaNUPTl1CYJoin the Unruly Podcast on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/unrulytravelThe Travel Blog: https://wanderwoman.online/Sign up for email alerts: buff.ly/3CUNL0D

In this dynamic episode with Alexandra Paul, we traverse a few different (but interconnected) topics about the body and finding freedom. On the topic of animal rights, Alexandra tells us what "open rescue" is and why it is so important, encourages us to plan actions with others and feel invigorated, and tells us about her many arrests over the years. On the topic of human bodies, she explains why she was in therapy from age 16 to 28 struggling with disordered eating, and what she's learned on her path to feeling more at peace with herself and food. Now she helps others battling body issues in an unconventional way, and shares bright hope for the future that our culture so desperately needs. “I used to thing that being nice was the most important thing. Today we sit down the with creative, compassionate, and talented Robbie Lockie to discuss the parallels of queerness and veganism, explore why language is so important, and contemplate how gender is more of a galaxy, rather than a spectrum.

We take a walk back in time to learn about what Robbie's childhood was like growing up in Zimbabwe with their beloved rat named Mushroom, discuss the moment that Robbie got fired from their job for practicing individuality, and hear why Plant Based News was such a needed source of information in today's world.

Robbie also shares with us their profound experience that they had while using psilocybin, and what that intense and beautiful moment taught them about climate grief. Robbie offers up a remedy and way for dealing with grief that is important of us all: finding, building, and passing on courage whenever possible.

“Grief and sorrow are natural parts of life. Whether the beauty and majesty of this world lasts another day or another six centuries, the fact that it has existed at all is a gift. No matter how long we have, no matter long the animals have, no matter how long the biosphere has, every single day counts.”

If you’ve watched films, read books, or even experienced riding horses yourself, you may have felt or heard that the feeling of flying through the air on the back of a magnificent animal is one of “true freedom”.

But what does “freedom” really mean when the power dynamic in a relationship allows us to exploit someone through captive dependency?

Today we sit down with Ren Hurst who spent almost 20 years as a professional in the horse industry specializing in hoof car, holistic management, and horse training. She brings us along for her journey of going from riding horses and profiting off of their bodies to advocating for their autonomy. She talks to us about what trauma really is and its relationship to capitalism, why using horses for therapy doesn’t make sense, and how to set non-verbal boundaries with horses, dogs, and other animals. But don’t be fooled - this epode isn’t just about horses.

It is a powerful examination of why we feel the need to dominate other animals in the first places, the insidious effects of emotional exploitation, and how, through Ren’s inescapable hunger for truth, Sanctuary 13 is holding humans radically accountable for their own healing.

Is veganism just a "white thing"? Is veganism anti-indigenous? Is there still hope to rewild our future? Are vegan lime milkshakes delicious and worth trying?

Listen in to today's episode to learn the answer to these important questions and more. Samah and Chris from the Aotearoa Liberation League discuss their justice project with us that focuses on liberation for animals, humans, and the environment through a decolonial lens.

If you've been wondering why consuming the breastmilk from other species is problematic and anti-motherhood(drinking animal-based milk, consuming cheese, etc), or what role animal agriculture has/currently does play in violence and colonization, this conversation is for you.

“At the core of it, veganism is about peace and nonviolence. And when we look at indigenous cultures, those who are really connected with the land, they exude peace more than any other culture or civilization.” - Chris Huriwai

Join us for a new episode with Mo Seyam, and learn how he took bold steps to transform his life into his ideal vision, instead of letting society transform him to their idea of what he should be.

Two practices have chiseled and changed Mo into the incredible activist and organizer that he is today: Veganism and Kung Fu. After diving deeply into both and coming to terms with the fact that his day job didn't ethically match his deep-rooted values, Mo knew it was time to make a change. So, he brought his activism to the work place before quitting and going full-speed after his dream of teaching Kung Fu and doing activism full-time.

In this episode we talk about how to bring activism to your workplace, what giving up a steady income can look like, what exactly the Peace Advocacy Network is, how Kung Fu and veganism are related, and why you should visit China.

“What do I do with this information that I have now, working at a place that doesn’t align with my values anymore? I needed to balance my time and energy. So I brought my activism to the work place until I could make bigger changes.” - Mo Seyam

Today we welcome Dez to the show, an 8 year nomad, queer vegan, healer, story teller, single parent, activist, and so much more.

In this episode we weave together important issues such as racism, raising a nonbinary child, taking your healing into your own hands, and creating a life that you thrive in to create a beautiful basket that holds space for diversity, creative inquiry, and alternative living methods.

You'll learn why Dez unshakable when it comes to their faith in other people, and why they took the word "can't" out of their vocabulary. You'll also learn practical ways to make your nomadic lifestyle vision into a reality that you can afford.

“You hear that when you heal yourself, it heals future generations. But it also heals past generations. I see the healing growing around me and it is so beautiful. Sometimes we have to focus less on changing our family, and focus more on being our true authentic selves. People are going to see us glowing and want a piece of that. Eventually there will be change.”

In this episode we have the pleasure of having a fun, real, and honest conversation with Nat and Lil, the couple behind the van building company Moving Oasis.

While they live in a "traditional" home part-time and in their van part-time, their commitment to strong and clear communication is a full-time thing. In this show Nat and Lil talk about what it is like working working so closely with a partner, why couple's therapy is a good idea for every couple, how their van building company started, how they met, and more.

In the theme of 'making time for fun', we discuss why it was so important for Lil to be able to dance in their van, and how you can now rent it out to have your own traveling dance party as well.

“We’re trying to balance the building business, plus us wanting to travel in the van, and still make sure that we are having fun. Fun is really important to us.”

Although she scoffed at the idea for herself initially, she couldn't get that little beckoning voice out of her head. Over a period of time she transitioned her in-person job to online, sold her home and most of her belongings, and moved into a van with her two dogs.

Her story is a unique one - filled with talk of religion and witches, forests and finances - and we get to hear about how being a queer lesbian intersects with living the van life. In addition, Kristin shares her expert advice with Calen on financial questions.

"On top of wanting to travel, I felt this calling into the wilderness. Into a place where I could be at peace." - Kristin Holden

Join Calen, Darya, and Gio (Jorge) for an enlightening conversation on vibrant life, walking with death, and even falling in love on a volcano. Calen met today's guests while climbing the volcano Acatenago to watch Fuego explode and had no idea that they were so involved in the tour company, Wicho & Charlie's, who Calen and Tim were doing the hike with. After bonding over a warming fire while the sun sunk down behind the surrounding volcanos at basecamp, Calen knew that they had to have these two special people on the podcast.

Join us today to learn about Guatemala tourism, hiking volcanoes, getting familiar with death, companies with strong ethics, how to get volunteer tourism right, and moving to another country and uprooting your life to pursue love.

Have you ever built a house straight from the earth with your own hands, or had an ecstatic experience after after being stung by a scorpion? Our guest today has. Immerse yourself in this life-giving conversation about earth magic, earth whispering, natural building, and oh so much more with Atulya Bingham.

“Who we are is nature. Who we are is creativity. Who we are is power. The only reason that we don’t know that is because we’ve been sucked into a false narrative, and we’ve bought into it hook line and sinker. We’ve allowed ourselves to be completely and utterly polluted. As soon as you pull that pollution away, wow, there you are: a powerful creative being who, with the planet, can create miracles.”

This episode is a unique one. While recording this week's episode, Calen was interrupted. This friendly interruption quickly turned into an impromptu jam session where Calen sings, accompanied by the banjo and shakers, and turns the famous "I'm Sensitive" Jewel song into a song about the new Unruly Travel Guide that is soon to be published.

In addition to this random concert, Calen reads 3 sections of the book that readers voted for. They read a section about a travel moment gone really right, a travel moment gone extremely wrong, and the section on how to find work while traveling.

Welcome to part three of this weird, quirky, and raw series! Today, Calen and Tim continue their drive back home across the USA after spending 9 weeks (The podcast says 9 months, but it is 9 weeks!) traveling in the van. They venture into normal territory for Calen, that may be not-so-normal for the average person or traveller. They talk about how Calen ended up relaxing in a private pool for free, what happens when you are forced off of they Greyhound bus due to unexpected delays, dumpster diving for Chipotle chips & guac before sleeping under the street light behind their restaurant, taking TOO MANY edibles in CO (OMG), and getting showed up on the TransAmerica biking trail by a group of loving retired folks. Let’s go!

There are a handful of ways that we can support Glen that are not limited to in-person volunteering. It costs him about $200 each day to feed the cats, so donations are greatly appreciated and highly valuable. Money can be sent to Glen at https://paypal.me/glencats or can be transferred into PetSmart e-gift cards to be used for wet and dry cat food. Glen can be contacted at eachlifeischarmed@gmail.com. Glen also does TNR with the cats and will be able to do more with a boost of steady donations.

“It’s a night and day commitment to the cats and what I am doing.”

“I continue because I know that the cats are waiting for me everyday. They depend on me and what I bring to them.”

Meet the man who takes a hard stance on some of the most important issues in the world while having “no favorites.” Dash, in his 20's, has created and shaped an organization in Uganda that is dedicated to improving the lives of and pushing for the liberation of humans and nonhumans in his community alike.

In this episode, he explains why folks in his community are dying more from hunger and less from the actual virus. He tells us why and how he helps to support 150+ children & 50+ women, as well as how we can help be a support system. (Excuse our podcast quality! We had a hard time finding perfect internet connection but this story is still SO worth sharing.)

Last summer I spent a month budget traveling & backpacking Thailand with one of my closest friends, Anne, whom I met during my year living in South America. Having no idea the amount of adventure, friendship, education, and pure beauty that we would find in Thailand, we set off with hardly any plans in mind besides spending a week at Elephant Nature Park. That week was filled with scooping the largest poop that I've ever seen in my life, creating a run-club with our new backpacker friends and local ENP guides despite the scorching heat, and watching humans and elephants interacting in such trusting and magnificent ways.

That week was one of the most incredible and shocking of my life. Learn why it was so memorable & learn about hot spots to visit while backpacking Thailand in this new Will Work For Food Episode!

This episode comes to you raw, from a solo budget backpacker, just days after landing back in the US. You may remember Dianni Hall, a previous guest talking about "feeling fear and doing it anyway" when it comes to life and travels.

Dianni's plans to travel South America changed drastically, taking her all over Asia on an adventurous and spontaneous backpacking experience. From living on an Ashram and shaving her head to boating through dark caves, this episode will motivate you to get up and go when the time is right. But in the theme of "messing up and posting it anyway," our guest this week gets real about the difficult parts of travel and those post-travel blues.

So, it’s that time again. You know — THE time — where some of us meet with our extended families, celebrate the holidays and reflect on the parts of 2019 that stand out to us most!

Just as we navigate change and reintegrate when returning home from big travels, meeting with relatives and reuniting with folks that we haven’t seen in ages can be intimidating and challenging at times. Let's face it: just being an active participant in society is challenging at times. While I'm excited to see my family, I often experience social anxiety. So, how do we fit into the picture when we’ve changed so much? What the heck is the picture even supposed to look like? Do we even have to be in the picture?!

Let’s discuss all of this, and then some. You’ve been an epic whirlwind, 2019.

One of Yoga Girl's most recent podcasts inspired me to create this episode & I totally shared her original ideas on healing & reflection around the holiday season and how I hope to apply them in my own life: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yoga-girl-conversations-from-the-heart/id1219728105?i=1000460280256

It's been a while. I've been working, road tripping, and wandering my way around. Thanks for hanging in there!

Join us this week as Calen and their guest, Divina, talk about sexual harassment. Divina shares her recent experiences as a solo traveler; facing these issues as a queer, femme, POC.

Do people validate relationships, based on the gender(or lack of) of our partners? Can I wear what I want, when I want, in this body.... and feel safe? Is traveling solo, as a femme, safe? How many times do you experience being instantly sexualized (in the form of cat-calling) in a 30 minute time period?

Find answers to these questions, and more, as Divinia shares her stories in detail. She also gives us some tips as to how we can stay safe in our travels. And, as equally important, how we can support others' in feeling safe as well.

This is the first (ever) podcast episode of the new WanderWoman Podcast, Will Work for Food. On this week's episode, Calen gives you a summary of what you can expect to hear... and explains how they really can't predict what that will be.

They interview an incredible activist who rescued dogs from China, straight out of a slaughterhouse, and who was arrested and held in China for these actions.
