Reflecting on 2022 and looking forward to 2023, our CEO and Deputy CEO – Joe Moynihan and Amy Bryant – describe key moments from 2022 and our range of exciting plans for the year ahead.
Hear their reflections on what was achieved in 2022 including our 60th Anniversary Dinner, where together we celebrated with those who have made a significant contribution to Jersey’s finance industry, and we raised more than £60,000 for the Jersey Association of Charities.
2022 was also a big year for events, as it saw us return to some sort of normality. We had the highest numbers yet at our London and Dubai, live, Private Wealth Conferences. The team also went across the pond on our US Roadshow, which saw us host events in Chicago, San Francisco, and Miami. We also hosted several events for our South Africa Roadshow, which focussed on private wealth, funds, and sustainable finance.
In the podcast, Amy and Joe also point out a few exciting initiatives planned for 2023, including the launch of our Singapore presence, the release of our Jersey Finance app, preparation for our new Four-Year plan, MONEYVAL and a shake-up of our FinTech demo day. They also go into more detail about the work the team will be doing as a part of the World Alliance of International Finance Centres.

Mercy reflects on the challenges faced by East Africa in 2022, discussing how family-owned businesses can attract foreign investors through good corporate governance and business continuity planning. Looking forward, Mercy identifies East Africa’s priority sectors as agriculture, real estate and climate-sensitive investments. As the Government incentivises international capital through policies seeking transparency, Mercy hopes this, alongside a strengthened judiciary, will help East Africa attract sustainable long-term foreign investment and aid the reform of the economy in 2023.

Looking back on 2022 as a year of rebuilding, Frank discusses how Africa has been impacted by COVID-19, the fallout of Ukraine / Russia war, the sweeping inflation rates and issues with foreign currency. In this episode, Esiri explains how the rise in debt levels across Africa was exacerbated by COVID-19 and how Africa’s macro-economic issues resulted in migration to other jurisdictions. For West Africa specifically, the war between Ukraine and Russia exposed the huge dependency of imports from these countries, resulting in inflation and food insecurity. For 2023, Esiri foresees capitalisation in the digital space and how this can be incentivised with preferential allocation of foreign exchange to investors. With the adoption of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), a positive indicator for African businesses looking to invest in green projects, Esiri envisages that sustainability will evolve beyond traditional investments, such as agriculture, in 2023.
