She's everyones favorite, and she is 4 today. I love using the podcast as a time capsule of sorts, so here is a portion of a little birthday letter I wrote her last night.
Y'all. We are actually improving over here! This was my favorite episode to record with them by far. It's such a sweet gift to see them grow and change so much even in the two minutes of air time they get on these episodes. Praying this episode finds you well, whether you're totally over quarantine or finally settling into a rhythm that works for you. We are cheering for you!
Its Wednesday, and the gang is back! Its been a bit of a week, as you'll hear in the first 2 minutes, but recording these with my kids always reminds me there is so much good and ever present Light. Praying you find the same is true in your week.
We're back, and sadly our techniques have improved very little. And by very little, I mean none at all. I pray that these little voices encourage you to celebrate your good, acknowledge the hard, and be warmed by all the Light in your life.
Trust me, I'm as shocked as you are - we were able to record both parts within a week. Miracles never cease. This episode focuses heavily on the effects of adoption on our marriage, Foster, and we start our timeline with a video we recorded the night we met the girls. Like we said in the first episode, if there are questions we didn't answer or parts we didn't cover, PLEASE let one of us know and we'd be happy to address it. We're humbled you listen and care about their lives. Happy listening!!!
Well, we like to keep things interesting over here. Lighting Up My Week is getting a bit of a face lift in the form of 4 brown babes and I am pretty excited about it. Its selfish, on my part of course, because I really just want a way to remember their voices in their respective octaves and with their respective diction, forever. Every Wednesday, each of us will be answering the questions: 1) Whats good in your life right now? 2) Whats hard in your life right now? 3) Where are you finding the light? As always, my hope is that you'll answer or ponder these questions in your own life, and that it'll be a source of Light. Happy listening!
It only took 8 months to record!! I always knew that I wanted to sit down and record how Foster's sisters came to us, and I'm really thankful we waited this long to do it. This episode encompasses a lot of context, starting with how we even decided on foster care, when that process started, and a lot of other twists and turns along the way. If you make it all the way through, you'll get a 32 month old surprise at the end. You're welcome. Happy listening!!!
This is a woman I've wanted to share with y'all from the second I met her a year and a half ago. Each time we are together, I walk away either thinking about something differently, or feeling so thankful I have a friend who will go deep, and fast. She is grounded so deeply in scripture, hilarious, and has an awareness for those around her that is astounding. In this episode we talk anxiety, raising girls, working in a Christian School, and feeling the freedom to be who we are, right this second. I hope you feel like you're on the couch right there with us.
A shorter list this week, but it still packs plenty of punch. I hope some of these make it on y'alls lists this week, because they've brought me great joy. 6. Pioneer Woman's Pasta Primavera 5. Serenity Farm's Bread 4. Ghosted by Rosie Walsh 3. Bon Iver's "i,i" 2. The Only Necessary Thing by Henri Nouwen 1. Foster Care License
I don't need any special occasion to sing from the rooftops about this woman, but this episode contains the details behind two gigantic causes for celebration: 1) The Blair's are having a baby 2)The Blair's have moved back to Wichita. If you know Nan at all, you might know that their story to conceiving this baby wasn't what a lot of women experience. She humbly and willingly gives us the whole story, starting with the excitement that comes in the first few months of trying, to the doubt that plagued her mind and heart the very day her and Cole got the call that her blood test showed a positive IVF pregnancy result. Right in the middle of this, they picked up and moved to Minneapolis, MN, which we also cover in detail as well. Since February, Nan being pregnant has been my biggest Hallelujah, and I pray that this episode gives you one more reason to believe He is gracious, kind, and sovereign.
Y'all! It's been a long time, and I've missed you. I've got a list of twelve, as well as a few life updates (foster care, baby making, ya know, the usual). Hey Y'all! A long list this week - I guess I've just missed being with y'all so much that I had too much to tell you! I switched things up this week and started with #1 first, and if you listen, you'll understand why. Hope y'alls days and weeks are full of light! 1. Fossy's voice 2. My Pop Pop 3. Y'all, we did it. We managed to travel thousands of miles to another country to usher 24 kids into one of the greatest weeks of their lives. And I truly cannot imagine doing it with a more perfect group of people. We laughed, cried, prayed, danced, jumped into the ocean, listened, got pied in the face, ate dessert at every meal, and witnessed 24 kids catch a vision of Who He sees in them. In this episode we talk about how we got to Malibu, both as leaders and travel logistics, the structure of camp, our PHENOMENAL camp speaker, favorite parts, hardest parts, and why we're hanging out with our kids every day for a week after. I love these people deeply, and am reverently thankful He didn't design us to do this work alone.
Y'all. Y'ALL. This woman. Dynamic, brilliant, humble, talented, gracious. Her descriptors are a mile long. I've "known" Hanna for years, as our families have crossed paths in schools in Wichita for a long time, but it wasn't until Christmas Break in 2018 that I really got to sit down with her and have my brains blown out by her brilliance. Hanna attends UNC-Chapel Hill, but because she's a Robertson Scholar, she spends a little time at Duke as well. We spend the majority of this conversation unpacking the summer she spent interning at the Urban Doxology Songwriting Collaborative, where amazingly talented musicians write worship songs for people who can't hear their stories in the ones popular today. We talk about addressing our own implicit bias, injustice, being "too black" for white spaces, and "too white" for black spaces, how much the church has to grow, and whether or not God actually cares about people who live in the projects. We also touch on her talent for, and love of, and writing process for spoken word, and the moment she decided her life's goal wasn't to be President in 2036. Please listen to this, and then share it with anyone that will listen, because these are the conversations I hope we're having until Jesus calls us home. If you want any information on the internship, the organization that founded it, or how to support this ministry, go to www.arrabon.com or reach out to Hanna or myself for my info!
Seven things this week, each unique, and each doing their part to light up my week. Whats on your list this week? 7. Social Animals (documentary on Netflix) 6. The Impossible Burger 5. God Is So Good (You Are Worthy) by Pat Barrett 4. That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs episode with Amanda Lindsey Cook (podcast) 3. Finishing the basement for Foster Care (thanks to my father-in-law) 2. Mike Choi's mama 1. Reconciling
What can I say y'all, the man wears many hats. With his recent return to Instagram, one of them now includes a (VERY) below average fitness influencer, where he shares tips and tricks to not even come close to any sort of fitness goal. All jokes aside, Tay does have a significant career update (hint: real estate) to share, and I couldn't be more proud. Something I love most about him is his drive, and it has served our family extremely well in the 4 years we've been married. We also talk briefly about Fortnite, the long journey to the Young Life camp we are taking kids to this summer, and the staff spouse retreat we went to a month ago. Happy listening!
A shorter list this time, but a longer episode! I guess I just missed telling y'all what was lighting me up so badly, that I had to go into extreme detail. Hope they resonate and spur on your own lists of light. 5. The Zoo 4. Not Going Anywhere by Amanda Lindsey Cook 3. Suffering 2. Sitting with my Pop Pop 1. The Young Life Staff Spouse Retreat
Happy Tuesday! Y'all are in for such a treat with this woman. I have technically known Olivia for 20 years, as she and her family lived across the street from my family for years, but was robbed of growing up with her after her family moved to Texas. As you can imagine, a lot has happened since I last saw her! She loves Jesus, her husband, her patients (she was about to start her nursing job the week after this interview happened!) her family, Texas A&M, and the potatoes au gratin she ate on her honeymoon that brought her to tears. She does NOT love pyramid schemes, especially those whose workers approach you in Target. I don't laugh harder at anyones instagram story, yet she can go from hilarity to humble and honest reflection with ease. It is a special thing to know someone as a 4 year old and be able to talk to them 20 years later. I hope y'all love listening to this conversation as much as I had recording it.
Well, this little podcast has been around for 2 years. I wanted to take a minute to thank you, yes YOU, for listening. Whether this is your first listen or you've heard every one, the words thank you don't suffice. I am extremely humbled that you take time to listen, and I continue to pray that it is Light. As I've always tried to do, I want to be honest with y'all and share where I have been. I wrote a letter to myself 3 days ago, not only to worship, but also to chronicle a time I know I will want to remember. I hope that some part of this resonates with you; I've found that in every season of my life, my heart finds something to yearn for and forgets where my contentment lies. I pray that when you listen to my letter, you can find parts of yourself in it, and be comforted by knowing you aren't alone.
Rob Scheer: where to begin? I thankfully picked up Rob's book "A Forever Family: Fostering Change One Child at a Time" at the library in January, and immediately messaged him upon finishing. Reading his story, as you'll hear today, was so impactful, especially since he chose to directly invest right back into a system that can cause devastating hurt. In this episode, we talk about both Rob's birth and foster families, why birth families are not the villains, adopting 4 children of color as a white male, and little things we can do to make change. Rob is passionate about changing the system, because the statistics around it are mind boggling. In response to seeing so many children (including himself) carry around their belongings in trash bags (think about the message that sends kids about their value and worth), Rob started a non-profit called Comfort Cases that gives kids a backpack filled with toiletries and other necessities to help kids in care maintain dignity. It was an honor to talk to Rob and I truly pray this conversation spurs you on to get involved in some way!
A great list of eight for y'all this week! A mix of books, podcasts, South Korean words, and an old man getting down in Turbo Kick. I hope these resonate with the light all around you. 8. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman 7. Turbo Kick 6. Creative baking 5. Front door happys 4. Basketball: A Love Story (Documentary) 3. The Teacher's Pet (podcast) 2. Teaching Fossy "nunchi" 1. Awakening by Amanda Lindsey Cook
My guest for today is a new friend, but if our conversation is any indicator, she's a good one. Ashley started her company, Love Everywhere, almost 10 years ago, and hearing her talk about its simple yet powerful mission was beautiful. I'm always extremely encouraged watching women give a simple yes of obedience towards the giftings He has given. Her goal is simple; leave notes of encouragement hidden in plain sight for peoples days to be altered. In this episode, we talk all things about her company, but we also talk about living in NYC, being a creative, motherhood, getting engaged after dating for 3 months, miscarriage, and working in the corporate world. Ashley was introduced by a mutual friend in the hopes of getting her message out before International Women's Day, where her company is partnering with Reebok. You could find a card in their shoeboxes! I am so proud of her, and am excited to see all that He continues to do through simple words.
I absolutely love when a podcast guest comes highly recommended (and when we have tons of mutual friends), and Hannah lived up to every hope and dream I had for this conversation. She is PRECIOUS; truly, I kept thinking that over and over when I was talking to you. The way she talks about her husband, family, and friends is how I hope I sound when describing the people I love most. Hannah and I chat marriage, being a working woman (she's a realtor!) cheerleading in college, and the moment she found out her mama was pregnant with her (MUCH) younger brother. Hannah is all things joy, and I know you'll walk away from this conversation with some! Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! 7 light filled things this week, and my prayer, as always, is that this list opens your eyes, ears, and hearts to the light around you. Thank you for being here with me this week! 7. Veggie Frittata's (from Costco) 6. Raise a Hallelujah by Bethel Music 5. Teaching Sunday School 4. Almond Butter stuffed Dates 3. Broken Harts podcast 2. Panera 1. Watching and cheering on someone as they thrive in an area you don't
Y'all. I don't remember how I found Molly, but it was one of the best discoveries of 2018. You all probably know her from her "Sunday Bakes" on instagram, which are one of the greatest things on the internet right now. I mean, she dresses up as Paula Dean, Julia Child, Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman) and Guy Fieri, ALL IN ONE DAY. ACCENTS INCLUDED! What you might not know about Molly, however, is that she has spent her life in the music industry, writing songs I bet all of you have heard on your radio or on TV. I was FLOORED when she told me one of the songs she wrote! She's a wife, mama, friend, daughter, but I was most in awe of her faith, constantly bringing every good and hard thing in her life back to Jesus. Molly exceeds all the hype - Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! A shorter list this time, and, as usual, I hope it inspires you to start you own lists of light. 8. Rainbow Carrots 7. Ear Hustle (podcast) 6. Back with my favorite person, doing one of my favorite things: reflecting on the year. I truly do love taking the time to look back on a month, year, or season and recount all the Lord has done. Bonus that it was with my person, taking each month of 2018 and breaking down some of the things that lit up our year. We talk trips, special visitors, new jobs, moving cities, and ways we've seen the Lord move. Listen all the way until the end to hear something we are especially excited for in 2019! Happy listening!
You have to be incredibly special to be invited on this podcast as a male, and Calvin exceeds the criteria. A new friend, I met Calvin early this fall when he joined one of my husbands Young Life Leader teams. Tay kept raving about him, and it didn't take me long to realize why! Calvin is a friend, mentor, star wars fanatic, podcaster, and former soccer star. In this episode we talk about Shepherds Way, the non-profit he works for, living with two special needs men, leading high school freshmen, soccer, and of course, he enlightens me on the best star wars movie. I'm thankful for this conversation, and I hope you'll understand why after listening!
Hey Hey! Ten things again for you this week - I'm beginning to think its my magic number. Hey y'all! There are so many words that come to mind when I think of Carson. Vibrant, faithful, deeply empathetic, and as buzz wordy as this adjective has become, intentional. I can't help but use the latter because of how perfectly it describes Carson. She does everything with purpose, especially friendship. I met Carson my sophomore year at Carolina, and it has been one of my most cherished friendships yet. We talk big city livin (specifically NYC), having sisters, how long finding a community takes, and comparison. I love this woman, and after listening, I think you'll want a "Carson" of your own!
I can't believe its been nearly 3 months since this rendition of the podcast! I've missed sharing these sources of light, so I hope most of what I share finds its way into your week, and lights you up, too. 10 things, counting down! 10. Magnolia Table Cookbook by Joanna Gaines 9. "Slow Burn" a podcast covering Watergate and Bill Clinton's impeachment 8. "Good to Me" by Audrey Assad 7. Honey-crisp Apple season 6. Creative baking 5. Basketball season 4. Forgiving myself 3. "Things Above" podcast with James Bryan Smith 2. Sheree, a cashier at our local grocery store 1. Saying "Yes" to interruption Happy listening :)
Recording this episode was incredibly surreal for several reasons. Firstly, I babysat Elley, and her brother Clark, for a handful of years when they were tiny. Secondly, the amount of wisdom and grace and honesty she packs into this episode is astounding. And, she's only 20!! I knew Elley would be something special, but she blew me away. In this episode, we talk comparison, when things don't go your way, college, and why mamas with Reese's save the day. I love this girl and the woman she is and is becoming. I know you will, too! P.s. If you want to check out Elley's blog, which I highly recommend, here's the link! https://standoutstandtall.com
Here it is - the continuation of part 1! Part 2 contains loads of goodness, including when I met Tay and how he's played a healing role, how it manifested in my first job, pregnancy, and an update on how everything is now. I've been so overwhelmed by yalls comments, both through social media, and in person. It is truly an answered prayer for it to mean something to some of yall. Like I say at the end, if any of this resonates, or if you are struggling in the dark, let someone know. Bring it to the light. I think a lot of the things I talk about are normal in our culture and easy to hide behind. It'll feel scary initially, but I promise you won't regret it (I would be happy to listen if you want someone to empathize). Some of my richest friendships to date are because of this shared struggle. Thank you again for listening and showing up every Tuesday. Every single download is a gift! Happy listening!!
Hey Hey! It was time. If you have known me closely for the past several years, you've probably heard me openly talk about it, but might not have ever heard the whole story. I've referenced it in enough episodes, and so many guests (Tay, Kate Strickler, Kathryn Archer, Shelton Current, Caitlin Ball, Haley Rhyne, my parents, Kylie Mitchel, and Robyn Nohling) have played a part in my freedom and recovery. Planning for this episode was surprisingly cathartic; allowing me to pinpoint things that had never cemented in my memory previously, and giving me hope that He will continue to set my feet on solid ground. I also realized that the journey has been longgggggg: hence the need for two parts! Like I share in the beginning, my prayer is that you'd hear His glory and light all over what I share. It isn't my story of triumph (because, lets be honest, I have not arrived!), but rather His of redemption. Even if you don't struggle with this specific sin, I hope me sharing will allow us to connect in some way. Maybe its just the simple fact that none of us have it all together, despite what outward appearances convey!! Happy listening!
Hey Y'all! I recorded this episode over a year ago with my dear friend Kate, and as I was thinking about past episodes I'd love to highlight, this was the first that came to mind. As I said in the first show description, no one has had a more profound spiritual impact on me, aside from my husband. She is all things wonderful; a precious wife, mama, friend, daughter, sister and mastermind in the kitchen. Kate is ALWAYS who she is, which I admire more than words can articulate. FYI - Towards the beginning, Kate's very lively dog goes a little crazy when an Amazon delivery man comes, so be prepared. I know you'll add this episode to your favorites list!
All I wanted for my birthday was to podcast with my people, and they made my dreams come true!! I rang in 27 years of life with my husband, brother, mama and daddy, talking all things fortnite, family, race, and honoring the memory of someone we all miss desperately. I love these people, and I am certain I wouldn't be who I am at 27 without their love. Happy listening!
Y'all. If you listen to podcasts, chances are, you've heard of "The Popcast," hosted by Knox McCoy and Jamie Golden. Who you might not know, is the master behind the scenes, Erin Hicks Moon (or, Erin "The Edge" Moon for Popcast loyalists). Elated was I when she agreed to chat all things crazy children, theater, conning our husbands into marrying us, how to love an Enneagram 3, the time suck and supreme delight that is instagram and what being President of the Zac Efron fan club really entails. This conversation was pure joy, and Erin is on my bucket list to meet in real life. It was an honor to chat with her for an hour - she's even better than her instagram stories make her out to be. (P.s. If you aren't watching her instagram stories, you aren't living.) Happy listening!
Hey y'all! 8 things for you this week, a shorter list. It's been almost a month since I've been with you, sharing whats been lighting me up, so I hope there are some that you take with you, and some that make you look at your week differently. 8. Knollas pizza 7. Nora's Kitchen food truck 6. Chefs Table (with Christina Tosi) 5. Support team generosity 4. Last Chance U 3. Writing and reading thank you's 2. Oprah's master class (podcast) 1. Its a lot of steps, but I am so thankful!!!
Well, we made it. Fossy celebrated his first year last Friday, so Tay and I sat down to recap the second 6 months of Fossy's life, and talk through expectations vs. reality of parenting. Some topics that came up? Sleep, discipline, our parents, travel, attachment, and being a dad vs. a mama in the first year. We also talk about our plans for fostering and adopting, and it wouldn't be a Tay and Kam podcast if I didn't throw him under the bus at least 3 times. Happy listening!
Hey Y'all! Episode 50 is sort of a milestone, so it is incredibly fitting to have the guest on that I do today. Lindsey's story will leave you speechless. It is one of tragedy, faith, friendship, and provision. Hailing from Charlotte NC, but now currently living in Wilmington, NC, Lindsey openly shares about her family, alcohol addiction, broken relationships, studying abroad, and His grace. At so many parts during the interview, I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor! I was introduced to Lindsey by a mutual friend, Shannon, who texted me a month ago and said, "Kam, you have got to have this girl on your podcast!" Which, by the way, if y'all have guests you want to hear, follow Shannon's lead! Anyways, Shannon was spot on, and I am so thankful Lindsey was willing to share her story. Its on my bucket list to hug her in person! Y'all are in for a treat with this one!
Hey Hey! Back atcha with another "Lighting Up My Week." I pray these are encouraging and make you look at the things in your week through a lens of thanksgiving. 10. Being Honest 1. Breaking out of routine
Happy Tuesday! I have been so excited to share this conversation with y'all, which makes sense considering the friend Tay has been to me since we've moved back to Wichita in the spring. Married to a resident, and hailing from Tennessee, this episode is full of transitions, (stories of her) tears, intentional investing, and seeing how He provides. In this episode, we talk about how Tay was NOT about Wichita when they first moved, what being married to someone in med school is really like, the temptation of not pressing in because you know your situation isn't permanent, and, of course, why she's so excited to get back to the South. You will love Tay's honesty, spirit and heart. I am so thankful for the way her and her husband live, everything having a purpose, because it reminds me how much power we really have in loving others around us. Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! I have a special one for y'all today, recorded with none other than my favorite person. Tay recently had a HUGE career shift (leaving his job in health care admin and accepting a position as Area Director for private schools for Wichita Young Life) and I wanted to not only pick his brain now that he's been in the job for over a month, but also share how it is impacting our family. Questions answered: What is Young Life? Why would you leave corporate America to make a fraction of what you once did? Why does everyone love Young Life camp so much? What does "raising support" mean? If y'all feel so inclined, you can join our financial or prayer support team. We would be honored by your partnership. To give, https://giving.younglife.org/taylorphillippi To join our prayer team, email me at kamriphox@gmail.com Hope y'all have a great rest of your week. As always, I am beyond humbled that you listen.
It's Tuesday! I was first introduced to Nafissa through her stunning debut short story collection, "Heads of the Colored People." I devoured it in a single day, and as soon as I parted ways with the final page, I wished I could start over. Refreshingly honest, remarkably hilarious, and incredibly representative of a marginalized group of black people living in this country, it is receiving high praise, and she deserves every bit of it. It was such a treat to sit down and pick her brain about the characters in her book, writing, living with a chronic illness, her husband, and whether they'll send their kids to private (like her experience) or public (like her husband's) school. Go and pick up her book as soon as humanly possible - even if you don't resonate, it will help broaden your perspective on how people (me!) exist around you.

Hey y'all! If you know Heidi, you're wondering why it's taken me so long to get her into your earbuds. She is light. Heidi and I went to middle and high school together, but it wasn't until college and post grad that it became something special. Heidi is my look to person for how to bring people in. She is a gold medalist at pursuing people, all the while running the risk of being rejected. In this episode we talk about the trauma conference she just got back from, working in public schools, why it's sometimes hard to be friends with people in seasons you desire for yourself one day. My favorite part of the episode is at the very end; Heidi honestly shares about when God taught her (EXTREMELY VIVIDLY, I might add) how much she needs Him. Its worth the listen just to get to that story! Hope y'all enjoy.

(Make it through the first 10 minutes and I promise the audio quality improves! Our wifi was having a special time connecting.) Y'all, This episode is incredibly special to me. As you'll hear in this episode, I fell in love with Hannah during rush when we overlapped at Carolina, and thankfully, our connection didnt end after she chose a different house! She has an unbelievably powerful story of grace and redemption as she walked through alcohol and substance addiction. In this episode we talk about who she was before we met, drugs and alcohol, rehab, the power of friendship, how choosing to following Jesus doesn't always mean everything gets fixed overnight, and her boo thang, of course. Because of who she is, she had no problem laying everything out on the table, so I know you'll be moved having listened. I've had a deep (and now growing) admiration for Hannah's honesty, and she is someone I constantly point to as a beacon of hope and testament to the Holy Spirit's power. I love this girl something fierce and I know y'all will too!
Happy Tuesday! I've got seven things for ya this week, each of which have gave me a glimpse of glory since I've talked to ya last. On this week's list: 7. Nan Blair 6. Hiding behind doors (playing peek-a-boo with Fossy) 5. College Young Life 4. Sails by Pat Barrett ft. Steffany Gretzinger and Amanda Cook 3. The Cuckoo's Calling by Peter Galbraith (aka JK Rowling) 2. Middle Schoolers 1. Having margin
Hey Y'all! Starting a new series that God stirred me about in the shower. Not kidding. He typically talks to me there. I've been wanting to share more things with y'all, so I am elated about this new facet of the podcast where I'll be sharing a list of things that have been lighting up my week. I'll still interview guests, but on the off Tuesday, you'll get one of these! On this weeks list: 10. The Nose Frida 9. Nanaimo Bars 8. Christy Nockels "Be Held: Lullabies for the Beloved" album 7. Walks after dinner 6. Wagon rides with Fossy 5. How to Be Married by Jo Piazza 4. Smartest Person In the Room Podcast 3. Tays wrist brace 2. Slowing down 1. Writing in my bible
Happy Tuesday, (and almost summer) Y'all! Haley (or Wee, as you'll hear me call her) has been on my list of guests since the genesis of this podcast, but I never dreamt we'd be able to do it sitting face to face. As you'll hear in the beginning, we recorded this in my bedroom in Wichita, KS, after she surprised me in my living room the night before. That is just like Haley, though. She has the most adventurous and passionate spirit of any friend I have. It's hard to find the words to describe what this friend has meant to me over the course of the last 6 years. Initially meeting at Carolina, Haley was my lifeline my senior year of college. Of the 24 hours in a day, we probably spent 7 with each other almost every day that year, and with His grace, our friendship hasn't wavered being hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of miles apart. We all have friends we think we can talk about everything with, and then we have friends we actually talk about everything with. That is Wee for me. In this conversation, we catch up on her New Zealand and Australian travels, her new job working for the Olympic Committee, dating, fulfillment in jobs, and of course, flying to Chapel Hill last minute to see Carolina win the National Championship (and surprise her sister in a fraternity house). She is one of my absolute favorites. Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! Today I am delighted to introduce you to Lincee Ray - the gem behind the "I Hate Green Beans" blog. I stumbled upon Lincee's blog when her bachelor recaps became a weekly highlight as my husband and I laughed and "deer in the headlight" eyed our way through Arie's season of the bachelor. As a writer for Entertainment Weekly, Lincee is quite the expert in pop culture. In this episode we talk Bachelor (of course), writing for a living, her first book titled "Why I Hate Green Beans," what not to do when writing books, the importance of friendship, and why Christians can love pop culture, too. You'll laugh your way through this one, just like I did! Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday! Ever been a huge fan of someone from afar and secretly wish you could sit down and talk with them and experience for yourself how incredible they are? Enter my conversation with Brittany. Church planter, wife, mama, comedian (ok, not totally, but she could be), sister and friend; Brittany wears many hats and does them with extreme humility and grace. Brittany and I went really deep, really quickly. We talked about loss, sin struggles, how God speaks to us tenderly and personally, facing Jesus when you are mad and hurt, and how each of her siblings could have a spot on SNL. We even talk about Joanna Gaines! I had chills on my body throughout the episode, as it felt like she was speaking directly to what my heart needed to hear. Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday Y'all! What an honor to share this friend. Jessica and I originally connected via a connect group for women pursuing creative careers, but our friendship has turned into so much more! In this episode, we talk about being in the interracial marriage club, her and her husband's walk through trying to conceive a child, foster care, writing books, and why your only community can't be on social media. This episode is so special to me because of the courage it took for Jessica to share. Also, she's got a book releasing in a month!! After listening, I know you'll want to add it to your list. Find her work at jessicanmathisen.com Happy listening!
How has it already been an entire year?! When I started this a year ago, I could never have fathomed what a year with this podcast would hold. So many huge life events (a baby, TWO moves) yes, but I have learned so much through hosting this humble project as well. In this episode, a surprise guest puts me behind the microphone. Yes, I was interviewed, and it was really fun. We talk about our most recent move (2 weeks ago), celebrations and unexpected gifts from this podcast, and what you can expect from Letting the Light In over the next year! I've said it a hundred times and I'll say it once more here - THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! It always amazes me that people are willing to give an hours of their life to listen to this.
Hey Y'all! I am beyond thrilled to share my friend Catherine and her incredible story with y'all today. CatCat has been a joy in my life since meeting her my sophomore year, and our conversation is such evidence of the steadfastness, loyalty, and compassion that she has blessed me with. In this episode, we talk about her time in DC teaching at an inner city school, her now husband, Ben, who is in the Navy and the seasons of dating across thousands of miles, including when Ben was underseas for multiple months without the ability to communicate. Catherine and Ben moved to Italy in November, and she talks gracefully about the challenges of adjusting, trying to find a job, and navigating a lifestyle unfamiliar to her. I know that you will be encouraged listening to Catherine, where it is so clear in her life that sacrificing for the people you love is always worth it.
My favorite person is back behind the mic again. This time, we are discussing the tornado that has encompassed every fiber of our being, otherwise known as our mixed mocha babe, Foster. Tay recaps the birth situation, (which I recap in Episode 21)and we jointly discuss essentially anything you can think of: Moving with a 3 week old, how I thought him coming home 3 minutes later than he said he'd be was the end of the world (sleep deprivation makes everything worse), Fossy's (lack of) sleep, and our favorite parts about him. Heck, we even talk about sex. Sorry Grandma. Hope our honesty sheds some light for some of y'all prospective parents, and for all of y'all wise enough to not have kids, here's to a few laughs.
Happy Tuesday! Often times, the word "budget" is a giant buzz kill. I am convinced that KK will make you think otherwise. I have always looked up to KK for the way she stewards and views money, and our conversation only further confirmed that. Some people in our lives are just tremendously gifted at several things, and KK is one of them! Med student, faithful friend, treasured daughter and sister, humble follower of Jesus, and devoted lover of ALL living things, namely her 3 animals. In this conversation, we discuss when and where to grocery shop, getting over the image of shopping certain places, what to buy in bulk, and how budgeting actually produces greater generosity in our hearts. I say this in the episode, but KK nurtures the people and things in her life in a way like no one else - listen and you'll be so thankful you did!
Happy 2018 Y'all!!! I can't think of a better way to start this new year than by sharing my precious Meg wit y'all. As a senior, Megan sought me out as a freshman at Carolina, and made it her personal mission to drown me in grace and love. Either her or Kate (Episode 12!) drove me to church nearly every Sunday, and for a car-less freshman, re-discovering my identity, it meant the world. In this episode we talk about those days at Carolina, her decision to leave the classroom to be at home with their toddler Ford, her husband, David, and how to make meaning of days where the fear of monotony settles in far too often. I wouldn't be who I am without Megan, so I am extremely thankful to share her with y'all. Happy listening!
Happy Tuesday Ya'll! Ever been around someone that is incredibly refreshing? Whose perspective and grace for themselves spills over onto you? Robyn Nohling is all of those things and more. As both an RD (registered dietician) and NP (nurse practitioner), she is both helping women heal from hormonal issues AND find peace with food and their body size. I found Robyn through Kylie (episode 25!) and her blog (thereallife-rd.com) has been such a source of joy. In this episode we talk about her recent move from NYC to Boston, marriage, how she ended up in nursing school, and how God puts you right where He wants you even before knowing Him. I know the holidays have us moving at a faster pace, so my prayer for this episode is that you'd give yourself a moment to slow down while listening. I know Robyn's wisdom will leave you filled with hope - happy listening!
Happy Tuesday, Ya'll! Beyond thrilled to share this dear friend on today's episode. Warning: we talk about when she called off her engagement, unmet expectations, and why teaching the marginalized is just about the greatest thing ever. I met Teresa nearly 4 years ago when I was in my first year of teaching at a charter school in KC. By God's grace, she immediately became a confidant, cheerleader, and someone I would grow to cherish more even years after working alongside of her. In this episode, we talk about running before, during and after college, special education, Teach for America, how to make friends in a new city, living away from your family, and, of course, she plugs her brother's kombucha that you can buy in Target. It's a long episode, and it's because it is so packed full of goodness. So worth your listen. Enjoy!!
Hey Y'all! Today I have the deep joy of introducing y'all to Kristen Wilkerson. She is a force to be reckoned with - full of wisdom, courage and kindness. Wife, mama, church planter, and lover of Jesus, Kristen and her husband, Taylor, planted a church in Harlem, and haven't stopped running in grace since. In this episode, we talk marriage, moving to Harlem a week after her honeymoon, why choosing to be brave in opting for community over comfort is always the best choice, continuing to run your race even when kiddos come, her sweet baby Nora, and what candy to get at CVS before the movies. Kristen is the type of woman who immediately makes you feel like a dear friend: listen, and you'll see exactly what I mean!
I'm still pinching myself at the thought of today's guest as I release our conversation 3 weeks later. Kylie Mitchell of immaeatthat spends her life shedding light on the darkness of disordered eating and she does it with tremendous grace and compassion. Regardless of your history with food,I know you'll adore all the wisdom she sheds in our conversation. We talk about how her career as a registered dietician started, the importance of accountability in disordered eating, her favorite and least favorite parts of carrying little raspberry (what they're calling their baby girl until she arrives)her husband Andrew, and how there's no such thing as a good or bad food. I left this conversation with so much hope for my own perspective on food, so I know you'll be equally heartened. Enjoy!!
Hey Y'all! Staying home with Fossy is my favorite thing. As you can probably tell, the pace of life over here has slowed way down, and the number of hours each day I have both hands free are few. I want every baby cuddle I can get, and I also want to continue to give the podcast the adequate preparation and prayer it deserves, so I'm moving to releasing one every other week! In this quick episode, I share how our new city is, a few highlights from his 2 months on earth, and give you a preview as to who you have coming on the podcast in 2017! Thank you for your grace as I figure out this new mama hat. I'm still so humbled that God has given me this creative outlet and I couldn't be more excited for what's to come on the podcast.
Hey Ya'll! Today's guest is my darling friend Tori Schaulis. When I caught wind of what Tori was studying for her Master's (Intercultural Studies, focusing on Race, Culture, and Reconciliation) and her latest project (a work guide designed to help people enter into conversations and relationships with those different than them), I knew I had to have her on. Talk about timing; what Tori shares in the episode was exactly what I needed to hear, right where I am at. Tori has one of the most adventurous spirits I know. In this episode, we talk about that love of travel, where it has taken her (Peru, Greece, and currently LA), her brief stint of working with Chip and Jo, breakups, and LA life. She even shares her experience of being a minority, working at at a majority black summer camp. This is easily one of my favorite conversations to date, and is so timely for anyone, anywhere.
Snag the #buildbridgesnotwalls work guide when it comes out on her website torischaulis.com
Hey y'all! It feels so good to be back, although this episode was recorded way back in May! It does without saying that I am ELATED to share Heather Avis with you. She has been such an instrumental voice graciously and lovingly speaking about the goodness of difference. Heather is a follower of Jesus, wife, mama, speaker, author and friend. She and her husband have adopted all of their kiddos, Macyn, Truly and August. Macyn and August have Down Syndrome, which Heather has dedicated her life to shedding light on the misconceptions that pervade our culture. If you haven't read her book, "The Lucky Few," stop this podcast now and march yourself to Target. Sadly, our power went out (and you'll hear it lol), and the interview was cut way short. However, I know these 30 minutes will bless you like they've done me! Happy listening.
Hey Ya'll! One of the things I benefitted the most from and helped me feel the most prepared before going into labor was reading a birth story and meeting with another woman who had been induced several times the day before I went to the hospital! I hope that this podcast episode is exactly that for some of you, regardless of if you're having a baby tomorrow or in 10 years! I kept a pretty detailed note on my phone throughout the process because I knew I wanted to share with ya'll. In this episode, I talk about the days leading up to, the actual labor, and how things have been going since Fossy man has been home with us. Warning: the word cervix is used several times :) Even if you aren't anywhere near this stage of life, I pray its encouraging!
*Letting the Light In will be taking a brief break - look for the next episode on Tuesday, October 3rd! In the mean time, I would be so thankful if you left a review or rating on iTunes! I'll miss ya'll and am already looking forward to sharing the first guest - hint: she has 3 kiddos, champions down syndrome, and has one of the greatest insta accounts EVER (@macymakesmyday).
Hey Ya'll! There is nothing like showing off the goodness of your very best friend, and today I am elated to give you that. Kat has walked with me through the darkest seasons of my life, and rejoiced in the richest. In this episode we talk about accepting differences in other people, her time in Nepal fighting sex and human trafficking, and her new ballin bagel making hobby. She's a deep treasure to me that I'm overjoyed to shine light on today. Link to listen in profile. *due to some Skype hiccups, the episode is 2 parts!

Hey Ya'll! It was such a gift to sit down with Blair and Syd, two of the mamas I admire most. As my due date has approached, I have closely watched them love their daughters, husbands, and friends with tremendous power and grace. In this episode, we talk all things pain-free labor, how your demeanor affects your child, the changes a baby brought in their marriages, doula or no doula, and working while mama-ing. As you'll hear me say in the episode, Blair and Syd have been precious lifelines to me in the past year. Anything they say to do, I run with it! Minus the no epidural part :) I'm elated to share them with you.
Happy August! My parents - what an honor to talk to and share them with ya'll. Interviewing them was even more fun than I could have ever anticipated! In this episode, we talk about navigating an interracial relationship, how obsessed our family is with sports, the challenges and joys of parenting, their tremendous influence on my life, AND whether or not they freaked out when I first brought Tay home ;) warning: there are a few tears in this episode, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Happy listening!
Hey Ya'll! Ever had a million questions you were afraid to ask? Thanks to a precious and brave friend who just flat out asked me, Tay and I got to sit down with our BFF couple friends (and baby's god parents, if I might add) and talk all things marriage/relationship. I couldn't imagine doing this episode without them, since their marriage is one I admire. Topics we cover: conflict, how to remain an individual while being committed to your spouse, marriages we admire, how we do not complete each other, and biggest misconceptions about marriage. This was the most fun - so much fun, that our laughs often affect the sound quality! Happy listening :)
p.s. if you haven't hopped over to iTunes to leave a rating or review, I would be SO thankful. p.s.2 stay tuned until the very end to hear about the new mini-series and next 2 podcasts coming up!
Happy Tuesday, Ya'll! Today's episode contains JOY herself, my cherished friend, Catherine Klunder. Catherine is a teacher, daughter, sister, friend, worship leader, lover of Jesus and justice. In this episode, we talk about teaching the marginalized, public vs. private schools, tremendous suffering, and what she wants to tell every person about her precious students. Catherine continues to push me to be a greater advocate for those that don't have a voice, and her life is a living testament of responding to the Lord's faithfulness, even when extreme sadness surrounds you. I know you'll be encouraged. Happy listening!
Hey Ya'll! If you've been around me in the past 4 months, you've heard me hoot and holler about the latest personality test: The Enneagram! I am so dang excited to share an expert on today's episode, Enneagram Coach Beth McCord! Beth and I connected via social media, where she provides extremely insightful posts about each Enneagram type. If you're new to all of this, and feel as if I am speaking Chinese, listen to todays show! In the episode, we talk briefly about each type, what led to her career as a coach, the types of services and resources she provides, and her family, of course! I absolutely adored talking to Beth. She is extremely gracious, insightful, and kind. After hearing her talk about the joy of truly knowing your strengths and weaknesses, you'll be as hooked on the Enneagram as I am!

First Step suggestions for audience:
Happy Tuesday, Ya'll! Caitlin Ball - I will never forget finding out a Carolina soccer player (hello, winningest NCAA program in the history of ALL mens and women's sports) would be in my bible study senior year. What I didnt know was how much her friendship and wisdom would open up doors of freedom and healing in my own life. Caitlin and I talk about her FIVE concussions, how being valedictorian of her high school was a barrier to believing in God, how she tried to reconcile homosexuality and Christianity, and what her life is like now as a staff member of a multi-cultural ministry. Of all of the episodes I have recorded with my friends thus far, this one stands out as far as how present the Spirit was, and how much Cait was preaching to ME (you'll hear me express this several times :)) Unbelievably thankful for her honesty and that I get to share her with you! Enjoy!!
Hey Ya'll! Switching up the game for today's episode, and I am really excited about it. If you've paid much attention for the past several months, I haven't shared a ton about both our journey to become pregnant and what its actually been like pregnant. Over the past month, I've felt pretty convicted to share, so here is my honest and raw story! In this episode, I sat down and talked about whether or not I wanted to be a mama, how long it took to conceive, and what that waiting was like, how each trimester has been, and the carseat we found on the side of the road :) Like every episode, I am praying this lets some light in to your day, even if you aren't pregnant or anywhere close to that.
Hey Ya'll! Kate Stickler - aside from my husband, no one has had a more profound spiritual impact on my life. I can recall several instances throughout college where time with Kate remedied all. You might know her as the precious face and voice behind Naptime Kitchen, (if you aren't following her on insta, DO IT!). We met over 7 years ago, but didnt grow close until she graduated from Carolina and started discipling me. In this episode, we talk about balancing momming and cooking, how her husband, Nate, does the simple things, where her love of cooking originated, and her upcoming move from Durham, NC to Charleston, SC. I cannot ever get enough of Kate, and I am so darn thrilled to share her with ya'll. Happy Listening!
**My deepest apology for the quality of sound this week. Maddie and I sat on the couch in my sun room where I've recorded a few times, and for some reason, the fuzz is crazy! If you can get past that, I know you'll be happy you listened!
Maddie Ritchie - Ultimate girl crush, faithful friend, and the best conversation when she's in Wichita. All of these things describe Maddie, and I am ecstatic that you get to hear from her today. I have known Maddie for 18 years, and our friendship just keeps getting sweeter! She is beautifully honest, full of hope and joy, and someone I always want to be around. In this episode, we talk about her job as Women's Staff Director at Pine Cove Camp, her trip to Israel, things she's reading, and the truth about Whole 30 :) Maddie is incredible, and I know you'll leave this conversation equally convinced. Enjoy :)
Happy Tuesday Ya'll! I am so thrilled to introduce ya'll to my new friend, Katie Bulmer. We stumbled across each other on social media, and I was intrigued by her platform centered around the Greek System in college. Having found Christ through the Greek System, I'm always interested in people's experiences. In this episode, Katie is extremely transparent in talking about her redemption after brokenness in relationship, how her husband's chivalry painted a beautiful picture of Christ's love, the bond that her daughters share, and of course, her book, "Sorority Girls Can Change the World." Even if you weren't in a sorority, I think you'll enjoy hearing about the impact it had on her life. Happy listening!
Hey Ya'll! In this episode, I get to chat with Bailey Hurley, an old friend, who has recently become a precious resource and encourager in my life. I grew up knowing and admiring as Bailey Taylor in the grade below her, and was always baffled my her consistent joy. After talking to her in this episode, it is no surprise as to what the source of that joy is, and how she has built a life around encouraging other women to find the same treasure. A wife, super-mama, and phenomenal writer, I am so thankful to be able to share her with ya'll--ENJOY :)
Hey Ya'll! Shelton Current - affectionately referred to as "Shelton" or "Tron" - is one of those friends that you are immediately yourself with. I believe it's a combination of her humility, realness, humor, and just how flat out fun she is. We met on a Spring Break mission trip at Carolina, and have been best friends since. In this episode, we talk about planning her upcoming wedding, the all-star she is marrying, how they want to build their family, her decision to walk away from her ministry job and that required a complete change of city and occupation, and good books, of course! I adore everything about this friend, and I know you'll get a few laughs from listening :) Enjoy!
Ya'll, Nan Blair. I can't think of any person I would rather have on this podcast! She is the definition of a faithful friend. In this episode, we talk about her conquest of 50/50 states by the time she is 25, getting married at 20, good books, and her and her husbands dreams of fostering and adopting. Her and her husband are affectionately known as our "couple BFF's," and it's even been rumored that they'll be on the show together in the future. I know you'll love my conversation with Nan!
Hey Ya'll! Ashley Coltrane is a Young Life Wichita celeb, who just so happens to be a treasured friend. In this episode, she shares her heart regarding working in ministry, her husband, the unique need for multi-cultural representation in Wichita Young Life, and her love of country music. She is FULL of wisdom and contagious joy, and I'm thankful I can share her with you! Enjoy!
Hey ya'll! I could talk to Tara for DAYS, clearly evidenced by the fact that we talked for an hour and a half before I even pressed record. She is an incredible mama, wife, and friend. She leads and spurs on women in her community so well, It was a joy to get to talk to her about her marriage, 5 kids, adoption, and her extremely convincing argument towards any unbeliever of the TV show, "This is Us." I know you'll adore her, just like me!
Hey Ya'll! Katie Brown - the definition of letting the light into my life. My freshman year of college bible study leader, she exudes leadership, selflessness and is one of the most loyal and fun people I know. We talk about friendship, forgiveness, good books, and her favorite potato chip. She's an incredible friend, and has so much goodness to share. Enjoy :)
Hey Ya'll! Such a joy to sit down and talk with my friend Morgan - we have been friends for a long time, but have just recently become close as moves back to our hometown of Wichita, KS coincided. We talk about her entrepreneurial spirit, doing things you aren't good at, the challenges of being in a relationship, and her amazing perspective on difference. I know ya'll will love her, just like I do! Happy listening :)
Hey Ya'll! In this episode, I get the honor of sitting down with my friend Elaheh, whom I've known since I was in the 3rd grade. A 3rd year law student at Belmont Law in Nashville, her story is truly incredible. We talk about faith, college, her acapella group and whether it's really like Pitch Perfect, and her hopes and dreams of what actually being a lawyer will be like. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did talking to her!
Hi Friends! I finally did it. Thank you for joining me, Kamri Phillippi, on the Letting the Light In Podcast. It is my sincere prayer that these conversations let a little light into your world, today.
In this inaugural episode, I sit down with my favorite person in the entire world, my husband, Tay! We cover an array of topics, including remodeling homes, his grace when it comes to my cleanliness, becoming parents in August, and travels to Africa. Enjoy!
