Kristen Batsel is one of only 50 leaders in the united states that serve as a director of an American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. Leaders in each state, like Kristen, volunteer months and months each year with no pay or financial support, yet they gather volunteers from their respective American Legion Auxiliary units and provide for a select group of young citizens (usually several hundred per state) who have completed their junior year in high school, a deep dive into understanding how our government works, how laws come to be and distinctions in the three branches of government. Kristen offered a week-long immersion experience where students lived and learned about the love and the sacrifice that gave freedoms to us. The goal is to build strong citizens for the future, encourage involvement and support young people by offering scholarships to encourage further education. Recent research puts coding at the forefront of future careers. What is Coding? Why is it important to learn in the early years? In this episode, we welcome Coach Newton Antoniuk from Panucation, a non-profit organization that uses playful and creative thinking tools to engage learning experiences for youth families and educators. Coach Newton has partnered with Stride to offer a free "Playful Introduction to Coding" class for no cost to any family with students grades 3-7. School counselors fulfill many roles within the sphere of a student’s education, in this episode we meet with a counselor and talk about reasons to reach out for help with career and college planning, academic support, and social and emotional development.
In this episode, we visit with Dr. Jennalyn Crapuchettes, a K12 grad, about her decision to become a pharmacist. STRIDE Career Prep, a K12 learning option, focuses on getting a jumpstart into careers or college by including health care courses while still in high school.
Many American schools were forced to hastily transition to online learning in late March 2020. Dr. Ian Kingsbury, of the Empire Center for Public Policy, saw this rush to educate online as an opportunity to study how the online learning experience of students enrolled in brick and mortar schools that transitioned to online learning in Spring 2020 compared to the experience of students who were already enrolled in virtual schools with K12 when the pandemic began.

Heidi and her daughter, Holly, look back on their experience of learning online from home. They share insights into what worked for them and Holly shares how it is affecting her life as an adult. Holly Loos will graduate in April from Brigham Young University, having achieved 8 semesters on the Dean's List. After high school, she volunteered with Humanitarian Especially For Youth and built cement block homes in Cape Verde, Africa. After her first semester of college, Holly served an 18-month church mission to the Adriatic North Mission where she mastered the Slovene, Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian languages. She and her husband, of one year, are headed to Physician's Assistant school.

Dr. Larsen DO, specializes in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He earned his medical degree from Des Moines University and completed his General Psychiatry Residency in Reno, Nevada in 2013. He enjoyed working with adults, but he really thrived working with teenagers, so he stayed in Reno another two years to complete a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Larsen has a strong interest in suicide prevention, and in two types of therapy: ACT and DBT. He finds these most useful in helping teens who are chronically suicidal or self-harming. During his training, he even once spent a day as a patient in a Residential Treatment Center so he could see how it felt to be a patient. Dr. Larsen enjoys teaching and writing has won numerous awards for his poster presentations and medical lectures. He currently has three medical publications and three novels available on Kindle.
