What if the very fitness activities you love are subtly promoting a harmful mindset about food? What if the jokes you hear about 'earning' meals and 'burning off' indulgences aren't as harmless as they seem? Join me, Christine, in this solo episode where we talk about the intertwined issues of food, fitness, and body image.

This episode isn't about pointing fingers, instead, it’s about fostering understanding and promoting change. We'll explore how seemingly innocent jokes can trigger feelings of guilt, shame, and judgment in those battling with body image and weight struggles. We'll also delve into how we can break this harmful connection and cultivate healthier and more positive mindsets in our fitness routines and daily lives. This is an essential listen for fitness instructors, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to foster a healthier relationship with food and their body. Pack your preconceived notions at the door; it's time to break body bias.

Imagine the emotions stirred when a simple Barbie movie touches the core issues of body biases and societal expectations. That's what happened to me, your host, Christine DeFilippis, as I immersed myself in the film's brilliant marketing, powerful performances, and resonant themes. We're exploring how this movie brought to light the struggle against diet culture and the patriarchal standards that women grapple with daily. From toe-tapping dance sequences to America Ferrera's heart-piercing monologue, prepare to dive into a discussion that extends beyond the screen.

Barbie's world is not just about pink convertibles and dream houses; it's a reflection of our struggle and resilience. The movie's portrayal of the maddening standards we're subject to is a poignant reminder of the empowerment and beauty that lies in challenging these norms. We're going to dissect the movie's impactful moments: America's impassioned speech, the dance sequences, and more. Join me as I share my reflections on the movie and how it resonates with the overarching challenge of navigating life in its varied aspects.

As we wrap up our journey through the Barbie universe, we ponder the film's subtle yet profound messages. The celebration of aging, the beauty of adaptability, and the necessity to dismantle patriarchal norms and diet culture take center stage. In our quest for a more equitable world, these conversations matter. Together, let's be part of this change. So, get ready to challenge, reflect, and inspire as we delve into the impact of the Barbie movie.

Weight bias is negative attitudes, beliefs, judgments, stereotypes, and discriminatory acts aimed at individuals simply because of their weight. It can be overt or subtle and occur in any setting, including employment, healthcare, education, mass media, and relationships with family and friends. It also takes many forms – verbal, written, media, online and more. Weight bias is dehumanizing and damaging: it can cause adverse physical and psychological health outcomes and promotes a social norm that marginalizes people.

In this episode, Christine shares her thoughts on how weight bias can negatively affect people and cause harm and some things that can help shift the industry.

This week is Body Acceptance Week, a new initiative promoting body positivity, body neutrality, and body liberation for all bodies. We know through research that body dissatisfaction is the leading risk factor in the development in an eating disorder

So body acceptable week goes beyond body positivity to be more inclusive.

Three types of body acceptance

🔥 Body Positivity
🔥 Body Neutrality
🔥 Body Liberation

So what can you do

  • Block out negative influences and negative images that make you feel bad about yourself
  • Follow powerful, inspiring people
  • Stop criticizing your body
  • Instead - thank your body for all that it provides for you
  • Give yourself permission to take up space
  • Give yourself kindness and respect - you don’t have to earn it - you deserve it just for existing
  • Remember that your worth is not defined by the size of your body or the shape of your body

Have you ever heard of Enneagrams?

The Enneagram is a system of personality typing that describes patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. The Enneagram describes 9 personality types and maps each of these types on a nine-pointed diagram which helps to illustrate how the types relate to one another.

In this week's episode, we learn about Enneagrams from Professional Speaker and certified Enneagram expert Jenn Whitmer.

Learn how you are motivated and how that could be helpful or harmful.

Jenn Whitmer helps teams and leaders solve conflict and personality clashes. She speaks, writes, and coaches about hard topics with infectious joy. Through working with Jenn, people improve communication, work through conflict, and build self-awareness with the Enneagram. She asks big questions that lead to big dreams and big ideas and big living. Usually, that means laughing.

Specializing in interpersonal conflict resolution, leadership, and the Enneagram, Jenn helps others communicate through difficulty so they can do powerful and connected work.

Jenn has graduate certificates in music education, theology, and leadership along with a Master of Arts in communication and culture from Webster University and certification as an Enneagram coach. Jenn lives in St. Louis, Missouri, with her husband, Michael, their four kids, and a cat that puts up with them all.

She is a yoga instructor, choreographer, dance educator and fitness trainer, working with students of all ages and backgrounds throughout the GTA. Her background in dance (growing up as a competitive dancer then going on to work as a professional in the field) has inspired her to explore and stay curious about all types of movement, the body, anatomy and how they are all linked to breath, well-being and mental health.

In this episode Charlene shares her journey as a dancer growing up and continuing on in the professional dance world and how she strives to create a better body image for her students and cultivate more inclusive classes for both her dance and yoga students. Welcome RD Sammy Previte to the podcast. Sammy is a non-diet dietitian and owner of Find Food Freedom and co-host of What The Actual Fork Podcast!

We talk about intuitive eating. misconceptions about intuitive eating, thin privilege and so much more.

“I have gone through stages in my life where I felt like food controlled me. I had tried every diet and NOTHING worked. I thought I was “being good” Monday through Friday by eating less and working out more. I would give myself a “get out of jail free” card on the weekends by indulging in foods I would restrict during the week. I would cut out specific food groups (cough cough…carbs) thinking that if I just ate less of something then the scale would go down and all my problems would go away…until Monday came again. It was not until I started looking at food as a fuel source and learning how to nourish my body that I was able to feel comfortable in my own skin, improve digestion, and live a life of food freedom.”

Sammy graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences and a minor in Kinesiology. Sammy worked in the Sports Nutrition department at Penn State with all 31-varsity teams. In addition to working in athletics, she served as a Retail Registered Dietitian for ShopRite Supermarkets in New Jersey. She specializes in individual nutritional coaching as well as grocery store tours, corporate wellness, and keynote speaking. She is a Certified Personal Trainer through National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as well as a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor.

Sammy enjoys working with all different populations. Her favorite part about being a dietitian is helping others create peace with food. Many people believe that dietitians are the food police–this is simply untrue. Sammy believes that food was made to provide our bodies with nourishment and pleasure. Sammy treats each client with individualized care based on their specific needs. Sammy and the entire team at Find Food Freedom are proud to say that they do not support the $72 billion diet industry. Find Food Freedom is rooted in Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size (HAES). Find Food Freedom believes that all humans deserve fair, unbiased health care regardless of the size of their body.
